Everyone and anyone who has not given it a watch should! It is Irish Goth at its best. Emily Watson gives a tremendous performance, and Paul is always top tier.
“Gods Creatures”- starring Emily Watson & Paul Mescal is an amazing film

Is someone's PR team working overtime here?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 19, 2023 7:27 PM |
R1 no. It’s just a great film. You should watch.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 19, 2023 7:35 PM |
This film was not pushed for awards consideration at all, likely because A24 put all their force behind Aftersun. They didn't even make it available as a screener on the AMPAS channel.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 19, 2023 7:36 PM |
R3 Aftersun wasn’t even on the long list for most categories. They put little behind Aftersun. Mescal getting the nomination was a shock to everyone.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 19, 2023 7:39 PM |
Charlotte Wells wasn’t even on the ballot to be nominated.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 19, 2023 7:41 PM |
R3 incorrect. Aftersun wasn’t an A24 original film. Aftersun was produced and made by BBC Films. It’s a British made film. A24 purchased the distribution rights for the states. But it’s produced by BBC Film Studios in the UK.
A24 put little to no money in Aftersun. It’s a tiny micro film. They didn’t even put Charlotte Wells as an option on the ballot. Paul Mescal’s performance gained enough attention to give him the momentum it’s created. From that he went to all events and luncheons etc. and earned that Oscar nomination.

Thanks, Paul Mescal troll. Good job. Now go to your corner and masturbate.

Based on the trailer, it looks well-shot and atmospheric, but story-wise, seems like a pretty generic "MeToo" movie about sexual assault—the only defining element here appears to be that it's from a mother's perspective as she deals with her son being accused of being a rapist. I've had sufficient of this narrative That being said, Emily Watson can do no wrong in my eyes, so I'm sure it's worth watching for her alone.

R11 you shouldn’t jump ahead so far without seeing it.

I have nothing against the actor, but the poster is going on my banned list, at least for a while. The infatuation makes him sound like he’s twelve and this is his first love.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 20, 2023 10:29 PM |
R14 oh who really cares? It’s at least endearing. Unlike your posts acting like a 12 year old who just saw a penis for the first time.

I just finished watching it, and it’s good, not great. The performances and writing are great, the cinematography dark and dreary, which works beautifully here, but the ending ruined it for me. It wasn’t bad, but it all felt rushed.
It’s a slow burn film and a quiet film, so if you like those types of indie films this is for you, but the final 15-20 minutes just felt rushed. That’s the issue for me. They took their time getting to the accusation and then took their time with the mother slowly realizing her son was most likely guilty, but then after they rush. Smh.
Emily Watson gives a beautiful performance, as usual. She deserves an Oscar nod for this.

SPOILER!
I just didn’t care for Brian’s fate, with the tide rising and him getting eaten by the water. Of course I expected this to happen to him, as we see how irresponsible he is despite being told many times that he can not be in the water due to the weather and tides, that will end up killing him. He still kept on until he did die. I liked that nature took care of his ass when the law wouldn’t, but still. He never once admitted he did it before death either.
Mescal and Watson were terrific throughout, I just wish he at least admitted it before his mother pretty much allowed him to just die. But I guess him never admitting it is truer of reality.
I have the movie on my tablet. Here is the scene.

Thanks R17, you just saved us all about 2 hours. But even without the spoiler, it's the kind of movie that you can figure out just from the trailer, but I do love Emily Watson

Photography? Actors? Stories?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 26, 2023 11:35 PM |
R28 all of the above. They still tell stories. Dramas. Etc. We have been making very little good dramas here in the states recently. Hollywood only cares about profits. America is barely even making indie films these days. Most of them are foreign produced now.

Is there any other kind of Irish drama, other than dark, gritty and atmospheric?
Obligatory coast shots.
Obligatory pub shots.
Obligatory dimly lit stone cottage shots.
Obligatory small village.
All under gloomy skies.
In film, do the Oirish ever have fun that doesn't end in a funeral?
