“Gods Creatures”- starring Emily Watson & Paul Mescal is an amazing film

Everyone and anyone who has not given it a watch should! It is Irish Goth at its best. Emily Watson gives a tremendous performance, and Paul is always top tier.

Is someone's PR team working overtime here?

by Anonymousreply 1March 19, 2023 7:27 PM

R1 no. It’s just a great film. You should watch.

by Anonymousreply 2March 19, 2023 7:35 PM

This film was not pushed for awards consideration at all, likely because A24 put all their force behind Aftersun. They didn't even make it available as a screener on the AMPAS channel.

by Anonymousreply 3March 19, 2023 7:36 PM

R3 Aftersun wasn’t even on the long list for most categories. They put little behind Aftersun. Mescal getting the nomination was a shock to everyone.

by Anonymousreply 4March 19, 2023 7:39 PM

Charlotte Wells wasn’t even on the ballot to be nominated.

by Anonymousreply 5March 19, 2023 7:41 PM

R3 incorrect. Aftersun wasn’t an A24 original film. Aftersun was produced and made by BBC Films. It’s a British made film. A24 purchased the distribution rights for the states. But it’s produced by BBC Film Studios in the UK.

A24 put little to no money in Aftersun. It’s a tiny micro film. They didn’t even put Charlotte Wells as an option on the ballot. Paul Mescal’s performance gained enough attention to give him the momentum it’s created. From that he went to all events and luncheons etc. and earned that Oscar nomination.

by Anonymousreply 6March 19, 2023 7:47 PM

Thanks, Paul Mescal troll. Good job. Now go to your corner and masturbate.

by Anonymousreply 7March 19, 2023 7:53 PM

If you didn't sign as PaulMescalLover I'd take you seriously but the name plus the neverending trolling about this non-entity makes me skeptical.

by Anonymousreply 8March 19, 2023 8:09 PM

So, where’s it streaming?

by Anonymousreply 9March 19, 2023 8:39 PM

Oh my god Katie Benedetto is in this!

by Anonymousreply 10March 19, 2023 9:02 PM

Based on the trailer, it looks well-shot and atmospheric, but story-wise, seems like a pretty generic "MeToo" movie about sexual assault—the only defining element here appears to be that it's from a mother's perspective as she deals with her son being accused of being a rapist. I've had sufficient of this narrative That being said, Emily Watson can do no wrong in my eyes, so I'm sure it's worth watching for her alone.

by Anonymousreply 11March 19, 2023 9:24 PM

R11 you shouldn’t jump ahead so far without seeing it.

by Anonymousreply 12March 19, 2023 9:27 PM

Will be renting it tonight

by Anonymousreply 13March 20, 2023 6:37 PM

I have nothing against the actor, but the poster is going on my banned list, at least for a while. The infatuation makes him sound like he’s twelve and this is his first love.

by Anonymousreply 14March 20, 2023 10:29 PM

R14 oh who really cares? It’s at least endearing. Unlike your posts acting like a 12 year old who just saw a penis for the first time.

by Anonymousreply 15March 20, 2023 10:31 PM

I just finished watching it, and it’s good, not great. The performances and writing are great, the cinematography dark and dreary, which works beautifully here, but the ending ruined it for me. It wasn’t bad, but it all felt rushed.

It’s a slow burn film and a quiet film, so if you like those types of indie films this is for you, but the final 15-20 minutes just felt rushed. That’s the issue for me. They took their time getting to the accusation and then took their time with the mother slowly realizing her son was most likely guilty, but then after they rush. Smh.

Emily Watson gives a beautiful performance, as usual. She deserves an Oscar nod for this.

by Anonymousreply 16March 25, 2023 7:34 PM

SPOILER!

I just didn’t care for Brian’s fate, with the tide rising and him getting eaten by the water. Of course I expected this to happen to him, as we see how irresponsible he is despite being told many times that he can not be in the water due to the weather and tides, that will end up killing him. He still kept on until he did die. I liked that nature took care of his ass when the law wouldn’t, but still. He never once admitted he did it before death either.

Mescal and Watson were terrific throughout, I just wish he at least admitted it before his mother pretty much allowed him to just die. But I guess him never admitting it is truer of reality.

I have the movie on my tablet. Here is the scene.

R18 ha! Luckily the film is not like that.

by Anonymousreply 19March 25, 2023 8:47 PM

Thanks R17, you just saved us all about 2 hours. But even without the spoiler, it's the kind of movie that you can figure out just from the trailer, but I do love Emily Watson

by Anonymousreply 20March 25, 2023 10:12 PM

R20 no. It’s still worth the watch.

by Anonymousreply 21March 25, 2023 10:16 PM

fuck u hateful bully

by Anonymousreply 22March 25, 2023 10:49 PM

R22 you’re desperate to make that a thing.

by Anonymousreply 23March 25, 2023 11:25 PM

R20 that isn’t the final scene. Just the end of Brian.

by Anonymousreply 24March 26, 2023 12:33 AM

It came out in Ireland this weekend.

Irish films are pretty great.

by Anonymousreply 27March 26, 2023 11:32 PM

OK, R27, what makes them great?

Photography? Actors? Stories?

by Anonymousreply 28March 26, 2023 11:35 PM

R28 all of the above. They still tell stories. Dramas. Etc. We have been making very little good dramas here in the states recently. Hollywood only cares about profits. America is barely even making indie films these days. Most of them are foreign produced now.

by Anonymousreply 29March 27, 2023 12:19 AM

Are Emily Watson and Samantha Morton the same person?

by Anonymousreply 30March 27, 2023 2:57 AM

Are Emily Watson and Samantha Morton granddaughters to Sarah Miles?

by Anonymousreply 31March 27, 2023 3:13 AM

Why the name “Gods Creatures”?

I thought this wracked island had thrown off the shackles of religion.

by Anonymousreply 32March 27, 2023 3:15 AM

What? Lmao. There are tons of religious people everywhere. Ireland is still very Catholic.

Emily Watson is a national treasure, she's just waiting for Judi Dench and Maggie Smith to clear out and make room for Emily Watson, national treasure.

Rolling Stone agreed with the user upthread, that the film is very strong until it’s final moments, but it’s still a very good movie.

Is there any other kind of Irish drama, other than dark, gritty and atmospheric?

Obligatory coast shots.

Obligatory pub shots.

Obligatory dimly lit stone cottage shots.

Obligatory small village.

All under gloomy skies.

In film, do the Oirish ever have fun that doesn't end in a funeral?

by Anonymousreply 42March 31, 2023 5:02 PM

R1, it's better than copied and pasted recipes from reGergitation. Though not much.

Empire didn’t love the film as a whole but loved Watson and Mescal.

Someone on Datalounge pondered a while back why the Irish were starving to death during the potato famine- when they were surrounded by fish.

by Anonymousreply 49April 2, 2023 4:34 PM

R49 You shouldn't blame the Irish for being passive and lacking in initiative.

They had bee 'infantilised' for a millennium

by Anonymousreply 50April 2, 2023 9:58 PM

I love the Irish. Please be kind.

by Anonymousreply 51April 25, 2023 10:44 PM

Why do you love the Irish?

Are you a childless, middle-aged woman?

Are you a meddling priest?
