The Gays and Tennis - Part 142: 2023 Sunshine Double
I thought I'd post a new thread since Part 141 is closed to subscribers yet again. If someone could post this in Part 141 to let them know there is a new thread, it would be much appreciated.
Who do we like on finals day? I'm rooting for Alcaraz. Good men's matches yesterday. Carlos just had a bit too much for Sinner. Tiafoe kept getting behind too much, although I appreciated his efforts to try and stretch the match out. Tiafoe kept fighting. He just needs to tighten up his game and not fall off pace so much. Medvedev was hitting some crazy winners from all over the place. Very impressive. I'll be curious to see how he plays Alcaraz.
I kind of don't care who wins Rybakina vs. Sabalenka. Sabalenka can really blast the cover off the ball. If she's gotten it mentally together, look out rest of the WTA.

I can envision James Bond struggling for his life as Aryna Sabalenka - playing a sexy masseuse in some posh Alpine ski resort - is choking him with her thighs.

Ha, good one, R3! I can totally picture that.
I wonder if Sabalenka, Rybakina and Swiatek are going to be a three-way rivalry fighting for Slams and bigger titles? It would be nice if women's tennis had an Alcaraz equivalent. It could use an exciting player to burst on the scene. I can't see Coco Gauff challenging these three, although she had been a thorn in Sabalenka's She-Hulk side. I'm not sure if there is anyone else moving up the ranks who could challenge these three.

R4 those three have definitely separated themselves from the pack so far this year. When they are focused and their games are on they can beat anyone. Krejcikova is also someone that can challenge anyone most of the time. Everyone else looks average compared to them.

Anyone who expected Ons to be a consistent top player let alone a slam winner has not been paying attention. She’s a terrible match player and her shot selection is questionable on the best of days.

#1: don't think Coco will ever win a grand slam much less be number #1 in the world until she fixes that forehand...
#2: Up until a couple of years ago, I thought the next great legendary rivalry on the women's side was going to be osaka vs andreescu
#3: Carlos looks alot better now with his hair grown a bit, parted to the side and colored? He will be very handsome in a few years at this rate. Just needs to get those teeth blinding white and his acne cleared up..
#4: i'm just picturing Tiafoe all wet from a shower and seeing that glorious upturned gravity defying bubble butt of his strutting around the locker room... best ass in men's tennis?

Saying Coco will never win a GS is one of the most stupid things i've heard.
Coco is a teenager and she already played a GS final and she is a top 10 player for quite some time.
A good bunch of less talented players than her won GS in the past years.
The problem with Coco is that she was so hyped back in the day that everything she does seems under the expectations but she is doing pretty well

Not understanding all the bashing of Coco lately. She just won another singles title at the start of the year. She had a decent Indian Wells too. Is she at her full potential yet? I don't think so. It's absurd to act like she's peaked and will never become 1 of the best of this generation. She still has things to work on but she's quite solid already Did people forget her RG run last year?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 19, 2023 7:46 PM

R31 And even that it's quite risky.
Stosur was older, a notorious choker and she missed her big opportunity on RG and even with that she was able to win her GS against one of the best players of all time

it's cool we're getting an AO final rematch already. Rybakina has really improved her consistency over the last year but Sabalenka has just become a new animal. It's really incredible that Sabalenka was able to so quickly reverse her serving woes. It was 1 of the biggest strengths of her game but then last year she inexplicably started double faulting in double digits almost every match. Most players who get the serving yips never recover (see Ivanovic).
I's say based on form and the h2h Sabalenka is the favorite but Rybakina was quite impressive against Swiatek
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 19, 2023 7:49 PM

I'm thrilled Tiafoe is getting better. He has become more consistent but he still needs to be more consistent and improve his midpoint tactics. He still sometimes plays a loose point and you can't give away a lot to the top 5. I'm glad he took out annoying, overrated Norrie though and reached his first Masters SF to back up his USO SF last year. Looking forward to what he does in Miami

my favorite match so far this tournament was without a doubt Sinner def. Fritz. They are so similar with their gangly, unsexy body types and playing style. Fritz has a better serve but Sinner has more power on his groundstrokes. I think most matches they play will be close if both are in good form. Some of the points they were just pounding the shit out of the ball and it was fun to see

I'm bummed...not confirmed yet but I saw it looks like Mmoh is also out of Miami. That means he'll miss the Sunshine Double and a great opportunity to have gotten more wins and points. He hasn't played since sustaining some leg injury in the match against Tommy Paul. It seemed like it may have been near his groin but not sure. He had to retire there after 1 close set. He just can't seem to stay healthy. This year he's finally been playing some of his best tennis with wins over Zverev, Shapovalov and Giron. Hopefully he can be back during the clay season if he is indeed out of Miami f also jealous that his fiancée gets to comfort him

R37 That’s a great example. Another one is Kerber. I’m pretty sure nobody thought she was going to win three majors and for the men Stan is another one that nobody would have predicted 3 majors. It just takes time for some players to get there.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 19, 2023 8:08 PM
|
yeah you really can't always predict when a player will peak. Some do it right away like Hingis and Austin . Others do it after years of being singles journeyman like Wawrinka and Kerber.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 19, 2023 8:11 PM

Kerber was pretty good on grass.
She must be one of the most inconsistent number one (with multiple GS) ever (Muguruza is her main competence)

Could it really be said that Stan and Kerber were journeymen?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 19, 2023 8:14 PM

Thought it ridiculous when people were slamming Coco a couple years ago. The hype isn’t her fault. And she comes across as quite lovely so don’t think bashing is right at all.
But it’s now fair to discuss her ceiling. It appears not nearly as high as projected. And she’s plateaued and, arguably, fallen off a bit.
Going into a matchup with a top talent, I don’t give her a chance if her competitor has a good day.
The night 12-18 months in her career will be telling.

R48 they did not do much at all until their mid-late 20s. There was never a sign they'd consistently challenge the best players. They struggled to win titles for years

Wawrinka has 16 titles. He won 12 of them from age 28 to 32. His first slam QF was at age 25. He was most definitely a journeyman

R54 there are dozens of players on tour who can challenge the best players on a good day. Most of them will never become top players. Wawrinka for the first half of his career was considered a lesser version of Gasquet. Beautiful and glorious backhand but wonky, flawed forehand with poor fitness. Then in 2013 he got much fitter, leading to better decision making in rallies and also made his forehand much steadier. That gave him more belief and he became a 3-time slam winner. There was never an indication he'd make those changes until he actually did it.

Rybakina was hitting the ball much more cleanly in the first set. Most of her misses were when she was unable to get in proper position to strike. Sabalenka's superior movement and athleticism were almost enough to make up for her multiple double faults

I can't stand him due to his constant Djokovic-ass kissing, overall entitled, whiny personality and I'm glad his singles career is a flop but Pospisil is an example of a big underachiever who can challenge anyone on a good day. He's got a good serve, hits hard on both groundstrokes, good volleyer and decent mover but he's just not consistent. He's too impatient in rallies and a lot of points end on his unforced error. With his talent he should have been a consistent top 15 player who occasionally had deep runs in big events but mentally isn't there. He's someone the top players do not want for an opening round but they're happy if they play him in the third round because he'll choke.

On live-tennis.eu you can filter the players under 18, 19, 20, etc. so I used a filter to only show the players under 20 and then checked their profiles on the ATP website: of the fifty I've profiled ONLY ONE player has a OHBH, an atypical 6'7" player with a trilingual name Giovanni (IT) Mpetshi (Congo) Perricard (FR), all the others came back with a THBH. Guys, this is it, when the petulant Tsitsipas and the flashy but cognitively-challenged Shapo are retired, the OHBH will be Finnished!

Yeah Novak is infuriating. I'll agree he's probably the GOAT but personality-wise he's just horrible. He's really fucked up his legacy with his anti-vac shit. He's probably more famous for that than his considerable tennis achievements.

Carlos put on a spectacular display yesterday. Medvedev looked completely at a loss and couldn't figure out how to counter the variety Alcaraz displayed. Even though it went quick, it was fun to watch Alcaraz in god mode. I hope he grabs a Slam or two this year. And I hope one of the Slams is the French. Anything but another Nadal or Djokovic win there.

I don't like Mpetshi Perricard's one hand backhand.
There are several young players with one hand backhand (i remember a german kid who was pretty good).
Anyway, i think the one to watch from juniors right now is Thijs Boogaard. He is dutch 14 years old and he is already in the top 40 of the junior ranking (he won a lot of matches in a row at the end of last year an the beginning of this one)

There a german junior Shoenhaus who has a very good one hand backhand. It's too soon to know if he is going to be a pro. He was one of the top players from U14 two years ago and he is doing quite well on juniors (nothing spectacular but good).
Anyway most juniors don't win GS till they are in their last two years (17-18), of course there are exceptions, Rune won at 16 (and Mochizuki, and last years US Open champion and Rafa Nadal academy alum, Martin Landaluce)

Does anyone think Carlos Alcaraz can complete the Sunshine Double? His performances in the last three rounds of Indian Wells were impressive, taking out Auger-Allliasime, Sinner, and Medvedev in straights. I hope he continues on and takes Miami as well. He's the most exciting player we've seen in a long, long time, who can actually grab these big titles.

His volleying ability wasn't realized at Wimbledon last year, losing to Sinner. This year he'll def be Novak's main threat.

I agree, R171, he's the main threat to Djokovic. I worry, too, R172, about him being injury prone. But despite his injuries last year and this year, he's still winning big titles. Nadal was someone who frequently bothered with injuries throughout his career, yet he's tied for most Slams of all time. Hopefully Carlos and his team can manage his health. The modern game is brutal on the body.
I also agree, R172, that Nadal and Djokovic need to go. Djokovic will be the last holdout. Nadal is fading physically, and I think that in turn is taking a mental toll on Nadal. Federer was relatively injury-free throughout most of his career, although I suspect he bothered with injuries more than he let on. He just didn't call them out as frequently as Nadal, who often seemed to say he had something wrong with him if he lost. Cue, "My foot hurt so mush!"
I'd rather see the young guys vie for Slams this year, meaning the 22 and under club. Tsitsipas was a huge disappointment in the Australian final this year. I just think that generation doesn't have the belief that Alcaraz, Sinner, Rune, and others who are younger do. They believe they can beat the best and they believe they belong in the winner's circle. The generation just before them and not much older than them are still blinded by the Big 3 mystique.

I don't think Swiatek's problem is Rybakina. Her problem is that she is lethal when she dominates the score but she tends to take very bad decissions when she is behind.
Rybakina has a great serve, which is a big problem when you are losing because it's difficult to break her which puts more pressure.
I don't think Swiatek will have any problem on clay, when she is clearly the best player, but matching her last year's results is going to be difficult

I like the Sunshine Double because we get to see right away how players will adjust in another big tournament. And even though IW and Miami are both hard courts, the conditions are way different. The court in Miami is faster, obviously it's way more humid, often warmer, less difference between night and day than in the desert. Should be interesting. Alacaraz, Fritz, Rune, and Sinner are all on the same half of the draw again - the top half (lol). The bottom half is a great opportunity for any number of players. If Med can put the IW thrashing behind him, he could make the final in Miami. Tsitsipas could get on track. Shelton could have another breakthrough in his home state. Tiafoe could follow up his best ever Masters performance with another SF or better. Will be interested to see if players can learn something from Alacaraz if they have to play Med - and if Med will actually stand anywhere near the court if opponents start to utilize the Alacaraz playbook.

Lindsey Davenport was saying during the Stephens/Rogers match tonight that the court is so fast that there haven't been many (or any) long rallies (9 shots or more). Or something like that. Seems like that would be an advantage to players like Med and Rybakina.

"Lindsey Davenport was saying during the Stephens/Rogers match tonight that the court is so fast that there haven't been many (or any) long rallies (9 shots or more). Or something like that. Seems like that would be an advantage to players like Med and Rybakina."
It is, but for different reasons. Rybakina is a power player - she can overpower people on any court, including slow courts. A fast court just makes her shots even more deadly and gives her opponents even less time to react. The only thing she has to worry about on a faster court is her defense - will it be so fast that more players will bother her with their power and rob her of time.
Med, comparatively to most other top men, is not a power player at all (not that he NEVER hits a powerful shot) - rather he's a counterpuncher and grinder who works points to draw an error from his opponent or eventually draw a weak reply so he can get to the forecourt and have a put away shot. He likes faster courts because it assists him with producing a faster ball that will make it possible for him to get his opportunities earlier in a point. And since he's good at redirecting his opponents' pace, when his opponents are hitting faster due to the court, he has more pace to redirect. Basically, he hits harder/faster when his opponents hit harder/faster. [How hard they hit is fairly static, but how fast the ball comes depends on how hard they hit AND the court speed.] He doesn't like to create his own pace because he's not really good at it. His serve - which his one affirmative weapon - is also more potent on a faster court.
BUT, Med can sometimes be overpowered, and on a faster court even more so if his opponent is clicking. His very deep court positioning - which makes it very tough to get a ball past the thoroughly mobile Med, can also be his downfall as players can drop shot, serve and volley, and hit short angles to throw off his rhythm and get him out of position - which Alacaraz did a ton of in the IW final.

A grain of salt. His coach said it and then it was boosted by his PR team. He's impressive, no doubt, but, he's only number 1 because Wimbledon didn't award points to Djokovic. Remember, Del Potro was going to be the next big thing. Let's see how his body holds up.
BTW. I forget, how did not awarding points punish the tournament, help Ukraine, punish Russia? I see how it clearly punished the 2 most hated players and a few others and helped the most beloved players but no one else suffered. Did they? Bad Wimbledon! Bad! No points for you.

I'm an Alcaraz fan, but I agree with what everyone is saying. His playing style is aggressive and very fun to watch (unlike Djokovic' boring pushing), however that will cause a toll on his body. He is only 19 and has already been injured a lot. Djokovic plays boring tennis imo, but it's smart tennis. He is hardly ever injured. He is almost 40 and still #1 (well, from next week again anyway), that says it all. Alcaraz is also short, so he will always work ovetime to compensate for it when serving. It's good Alcaraz had an early breakthrough because who knows how long he'll last. Maybe he'll retire at 25. That is why it's important to win as many titles as possible now when he's young and healthy.

It's possible, R209, but people said the same thing about Nadal when he was in his teens and early 20s. I was waiting forever for Nadal to finally fade, but he kept on until the second half of last year. He frequently dealt with injury, more than Federer and Djokovic, but he's tied for the all-time men's Slam count.
Alcaraz could wind up like Nadal, dealing with injuries but always coming back and getting quality points. In fact, Tennis.com had an article about that this morning as to how Nadal was in the Top Ten for a record 18 straight years. Link to that article provided.
I do think we haven't seen Alcaraz at his peak yet. He is streaky and has a tendency to over-hit at the worst times, often losing leads and complicating matches. I was encouraged at his performance against Medvedev. He had a few consecutive points where he was a bit streaky, but overall he managed that match better than I've seen him do by staying mostly steady, working the point with patience, which you absolutely need against Medvedev, and waiting for his chances rather than forcing it. That's what made that bead-down all the more impressive.

To echo others, it will be interesting to see how Alcaraz's body holds up. He better have a great conditioning and fitness team around him, as well as a physio, and anybody else. "Modern" tennis is so physical. And the way Alcaraz plays - like Djokovic - with constant hard plant on the ground and cutting the ball off while stretched, often in an open stance split - that takes its toll. Plus, he's not quite as light on his feet as Djokovic, and his ground strokes are somewhat more belabored.

R248, I’m not aware of Thiem having any injury. I do know he’s said to be experiencing a phenomenon that afflicts lots of folks following wrist surgery. While the docs tell them the wrist is fine to return to full activity, the brain often tells the player that making sharp contact with a ball coming at you at high speed is going to destroy your wrist. And he has a bad case of it that he may never shake. All mental.
I hope he’s looking into things like hypnosis. I had hypnosis for my extreme fear of public speaking and quickly emerged as a really comfortable public speaker.
When your brain is fucking with you, you need to fuck with your mindset… whatever it takes.

Just saw a clip of match point (Zverev) and the announcer said he was dealing with "some external factors" - is he injured? Happy for the little Japanese guy though - wait he's 6'3" - he just looked small next to 6'6" Zverev.

I'm newly back to tennis and was googling around - WTF? Anyway, he's a Type 1 diabetic who was told he couldn't play tennis because of that (as a kid, I guess) So good on him - glad he's become open about it to inspire other juvenile diabetes, which is a whole different and much worse condition than old/fat people's type 2.
Two hours after the match the ATP announced Zverev had been defaulted from his singles match and withdrawn from the tournament. “Due to unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of his doubles match Alexander Zverev has been withdrawn from the tournament in Acapulco,” a tournament statement said. Yea, Zverev is lucky he wasn’t arrested after that incident last year, R286, when he nearly assaulted the chair umpire with his racquet. He also beats his girlfriends. (Allegedly!)

R282 Taro Daniel is another spanish product. He played in Spain since very young, in fact his sister Kana (who was more promising than him but vanished pretty soon) even represented Spain in some tournaments
And i'm torn about Rune, he is such a brat with bad sportsmanship but on the other hand he is really focused on tennis (unlike most youngsters) and he really wants to win (and put the effort to do it)

Was just watching Sabalenka and there's something about her jawline that looks so masculine. She's sailing through - maybe Rybakina can stop her. She's prettier and has great legs.
Today - American pretty boy Taylor Fritz has to face Spanish phenom Alcaraz. Oh well, he did well to reach the QFs.
Italian ginger Sinner vs some Finn with the weird last name of Ruusuvuori, who by contrast to Sabs, has a rather feminine jawline.
