Isn't it his decision? I'm a straight woman who doesn't care if an actor is gay or straight, just if he's convincing in the role and Heughan was great in Outlander. (I haven't seen the last season because of a change of cable provider.) I read years ago that he basically had been out but that the increased exposure created by the show made him more circumspect. I think it's pathetic that he apparently feels he has to conceal his sexual orientation, but there are audience members who reject gay people in romantic leading roles. There are gay actors, Rupert Everett is one, who have regretted coming out. Who am I to judge someone who is trying to protect his livelihood? He's the one who put years into his career, not me. It's very easy to judge someone else when one has nothing at stake.

Many of us can identify with this scenario. Back in the days when I was mostly in the closet, I used to get similarly uncomfortable when this kind of conversation was raised. I didn't want to lie and pretend to be straight, but I didn't want to come out either - so it involved choosing words carefully which required a lot of concentration and made me feel anxious. When the subject changed I'd breathe an internal sigh of relief and could move on.

I think it's even more awkward when you're with a group of people who don't know you're gay and at least one person who does. This is mostly a ridiculous thread with all of the back and forth, repetitive bickering (and yes, of course Sam is GAY from outer space).

That said, the article above was eye-opening. That two actors involved in the same 'harrowing' episode could come away with such drastically differing experiences was rather shocking.

Heughan's reaction is his reaction, but it's unfortunate that Menzies only learned that Sam was traumatized by the scenes through an interview.
