Aren't there stats showing that drinking - at least drinking to the point of alcoholism or it just generally being problematic (even if not an alcoholic) - is diminishing generally.
If it's doing more harm than good, then I get it. Americans in particular aren't good at moderation, so even if someone is just a problem drinker - they don't drink all the time, but when they do it's too much with bad results - the reaction is to cut it off completely or to massively reduce consumption so they're only having one drink at selected "special" occasions.
