What I don't understand is the selling point. Every kitchen I know already has an oven and cooking plates. Now I'm being asked to buy an extra kitchen gadget and ignore the utilities I've already paid for and been in my kitchen forever? For ... convenience? How many people can afford that right now (abandon still functioning kitchen utilities in favor of a new, shiny toy)?
|by Anonymous||reply 27||March 18, 2023 2:13 PM|
R27. If you're not willing to abandon something for convenience, what are you willing to abandon it for?
I get the price issue but convenience will always win out for me.

Most professional chefs never buy single-use items like this one. You don't need it.
|by Anonymous||reply 29||March 18, 2023 2:18 PM|

|by Anonymous||reply 37||March 18, 2023 5:22 PM|
Some of us can't just give up our gas stoves, because our houses are not wired for electric stoves (regular or induction.) It would be quite expensive to install the appropriate outlet for an electric stove.
Same goes for houses that are wired for gas dryers -- we can't just magically replace it with an electric one. And that also makes it more difficult to install a charger for an electric vehicle.
|by Anonymous||reply 38||March 18, 2023 5:23 PM|
I'm assuming there's a US version of this appliance that doesn't have a setting for "Hob." And someone needs to tell Emma or her proofreader/editor that we don't use the pound sign to designate US dollars.

This is my new best friend. A microwave/convection all in one. As long as whatever I am backing can get on a 12" round pizza pan, I am good to go. Since it is only my partner and I, we haven't turn on the huge gas over, except for crowds. I love it!!!

A gas stove used to prepare a family lunch in the summer in the South heats up a kitchen something terrible.
Yeah, you may have AC but it's working extra hard just to cool down your kitchen. Your wouldn't have that energy waste if you had an induction stove.
|by Anonymous||reply 41||March 18, 2023 5:39 PM|
Why don't you all explain it all for all of us, Experts?
And I mean everyone, everywhere!!!

[quote] A gas stove used to prepare a family lunch in the summer in the South heats up a kitchen something terrible.
Which is interesting because electric tea kettles have never really caught on in the US. I bought one simply because it doesn't heat up the kitchen.

Perhaps some of you freaking out over gas stoves might want to browse the numerous videos on Youtube of peoples entire houses being completely decimated due to gas leaks. Non-gas ovens/stoves are simply safer imo. The recent concern over gas stoves primarily stemmed from the fact that many homes with them aren't properly ventilated for them. At best, they simply have a fan over the stove which does nothing but just blow the air (and leaking gas) around in your kitchen.
That said, I've put off getting an air fryer because I simply don't have the counter space for one. I live in a condo with a smaller galley style kitchen - there's just nowhere for me to put it. I do however frequently use my toaster oven as opposed to my main oven. It's simply faster for me to broil stuff than waiting for my main oven to heat up properly. It also has a convection setting, though it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as intense as an air fryer.

I was recently given an induction hot plate, and it is incredible. It is easy to clean, uses way less power than my electric stove burners, heats quickly and evenly, and doesn't scorch the bottoms of my pans. I used to wish that I could go back to gas, but I am all in for induction now.
|by Anonymous||reply 75||March 19, 2023 8:30 PM|

Big hood vents are just smoke-eaters pulling air through filters. An electric oven doesn’t throw leaks and vapor into an unventilated kitchen.

I think this combi oven is a nice appliance but really unattractive. The SortedFood guys tested an Anova combi oven this week, which is huge and costs well over a grand. The chef on the team kept disparaging it but it won him over in the end. Gadgetry of this sort isn't made for chefs but for ordinary cooks who want easier and better results.
The most heinous cooking task is continuous stirring and I've not heard of a device that can reliably replace that function. Nothing on Amazon that does that gets great ratings.

You said exactly what I’ve been needing to hear, R82. I’ve been on the fence about buying an air fryer for weeks and usually conclude that the size of the basket is the deal breaker, but the memories that really haunt me are the juicer, panini press, and slow cooker. Each used fewer than 5 times.
Not to mention that I’ve never made chicken wings or French fries in my life, so how much do I really need a device that’s most highly praised for quickly producing those exact things?
|by Anonymous||reply 118||March 25, 2023 2:08 AM|
R118, thanks. Fries are maybe 10 minutes faster- but I'm never in that big of a hurry.

|by Anonymous||reply 119||March 25, 2023 5:48 AM|

Frozen French fries have been perfected. They cook in any old oven. Start the oven and begin roast some vegetables. Bake a frozen fish entree at the same time. Add the fries at the appropriate time. Hey, get fancy and use the BROILER to finish the fish and vegetables. Imagine that. And it will all taste delicious. French fries are delicious garbage food so don't eat them all that much, anyway. Serve with fattening dipping sauces and something piquant such as spoonful of mango pickle. Demi-sec bubbly.

no one mentioned the nonstick coating of those new food devices (instapot, air fryers...) something tells me none of them are actually safe regardless of what they claimed, no this chemical or no that coating, but they just use a slightly different chemical currently not listed as health hazard but that can change in the future, just like Telfon/PFOA, not that long ago they were ultra safe now completely banned!

I never made frozen egg rolls, samosas or onion rings in my life, but the air fryer really makes them delicious. We do frozen fried cod and butterflied shrimps once a month. Whole Foods and Trader Joes have delicious entrees. There are ceramic coated baskets so no need to use Teflon. If you're a serious cook, buy an oven with a convection setting or get a toaster oven with an air fryer settling. It's nice for crisping things.
The Speedi thing is about getting dinner on the table quick. I don't need to do that anymore because I work remotely but I certainly see why someone would find it useful. Reddit has a group devoted to steam combi ovens so if you're tempted, hang out there and check the pros and cons.

Why does it have to be so ugly? And have such a stupid name?

R30 - and why is it the general public that has to make all the sacrifices to stop contributing to global warming? What about the huge, rich mega-corporations that get billions in tax breaks every year? When do we see their contributions?
Such a scam, all these ad and political campaigns directed at the public, shaming them into participating in essentially useless austerity bullshit. It's a brainwashing tactic, manipulating the public so they move through life in a fear-based manner, motivated by scarcity and lack programming.

Did Nicki Minaj really come up with that thing all by herself, or is she just landing her name?

I’ve been using the Speedi for a few months and really love it. I’m by means a cook, but there are so many videos on YouTube that are easy.
The clean up is very easy. Yes, it’s huge — but, for me, so much more efficient than using my oven.

I'd be very happy never to have to clean my oven ever again.
