What I don't understand is the selling point. Every kitchen I know already has an oven and cooking plates. Now I'm being asked to buy an extra kitchen gadget and ignore the utilities I've already paid for and been in my kitchen forever? For ... convenience? How many people can afford that right now (abandon still functioning kitchen utilities in favor of a new, shiny toy)?

by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 18, 2023 5:22 PM |
Some of us can't just give up our gas stoves, because our houses are not wired for electric stoves (regular or induction.) It would be quite expensive to install the appropriate outlet for an electric stove.
Same goes for houses that are wired for gas dryers -- we can't just magically replace it with an electric one. And that also makes it more difficult to install a charger for an electric vehicle.

Perhaps some of you freaking out over gas stoves might want to browse the numerous videos on Youtube of peoples entire houses being completely decimated due to gas leaks. Non-gas ovens/stoves are simply safer imo. The recent concern over gas stoves primarily stemmed from the fact that many homes with them aren't properly ventilated for them. At best, they simply have a fan over the stove which does nothing but just blow the air (and leaking gas) around in your kitchen.
That said, I've put off getting an air fryer because I simply don't have the counter space for one. I live in a condo with a smaller galley style kitchen - there's just nowhere for me to put it. I do however frequently use my toaster oven as opposed to my main oven. It's simply faster for me to broil stuff than waiting for my main oven to heat up properly. It also has a convection setting, though it doesn't seem to be anywhere near as intense as an air fryer.

The chef on the team kept disparaging it but it won him over in the end. Gadgetry of this sort isn't made for chefs but for ordinary cooks who want easier and better results.
The most heinous cooking task is continuous stirring and I've not heard of a device that can reliably replace that function. Nothing on Amazon that does that gets great ratings.

Frozen French fries have been perfected. They cook in any old oven. Start the oven and begin roast some vegetables. Bake a frozen fish entree at the same time. Add the fries at the appropriate time. Hey, get fancy and use the BROILER to finish the fish and vegetables. Imagine that. And it will all taste delicious. French fries are delicious garbage food so don't eat them all that much, anyway. Serve with fattening dipping sauces and something piquant such as spoonful of mango pickle. Demi-sec bubbly.

I never made frozen egg rolls, samosas or onion rings in my life, but the air fryer really makes them delicious. We do frozen fried cod and butterflied shrimps once a month. Whole Foods and Trader Joes have delicious entrees. There are ceramic coated baskets so no need to use Teflon. If you're a serious cook, buy an oven with a convection setting or get a toaster oven with an air fryer settling. It's nice for crisping things.
The Speedi thing is about getting dinner on the table quick. I don't need to do that anymore because I work remotely but I certainly see why someone would find it useful. Reddit has a group devoted to steam combi ovens so if you're tempted, hang out there and check the pros and cons.
