But it's true -- had I not been stationed in (at the time) West Germany, I would never have known how much better the Germans had it than we did. They got off work at noon on Fridays. They had 30 days paid vacation a year. They had public transit to virtually everywhere. They could drive as fast as they wanted on the Autobahn. And their country was beautiful -- it was sooooo old; it looked like it had been meticulously manicured for centuries, and didn't have a twig out of place. I fell in love with it. The only thing was, it was so fucking cold! But not so much now, with climate change and all.

So yes -- travel to any Western European country makes it patently obvious that the US doesn't give a fuck about us, and this was evident to me even back in1977 before I had a context into which to put my experience there.

The US spent between $220M and $330M EVERY FREAKING DAY during the 20-FREAKING YEAR Afghanistan war. For what benefit? For what reasons? For what results? For what ROI? Can anyone articulate any benefits or blessings from this venture? Sure, Haliburton and Bechtel probably made coin, but how were our national interests advanced via this cesspool known as Afghanistan? This amount of money and continuous spending is massive and boggles the mind. A similar story is told with US involvement in Vietnam. We never learn. This country has never faced up to building the nation's foundation on kidnapping and enslaving Africans, taking them halfway across the world, using worse than beasts, working them from "see" to "caint' see", raping African women in order to increase their ownership of more slaves (this point is especially egregious; if slaves were perceived as subhuman, why would good Christian men fuck them? This is the same as fucking a pig or a horse, but I digress.) For the 100 years after 1863 "Jim Crow" laws and social customs effectively replaced slavery and perpetuated the second-class status of the former slaves.

This country's foundation is built on capitalism: having an initial investment and making it grow. The enslaved Africans were the initial investment during the agricultural era from the years 1619 to 1863. The newly emancipated citizens were only given good wishes and fairy dust as their stake in the entrenched and well-established system of capitalism. No, OP, this country (the government, monied class, masters of the Universe, big business, political parties, politicians, power elite, and social systems) does not care about black, poor, young people, women, Appalachian, rural, working-class, or middle-class people. No. Absolutely not.

The United States is invested in advancing and supporting monied interests, and everyone and everything else be damned. Only lip service to higher ideals is offered. A caring America is PR fiction.
