NCAA FINALS 2023
I didn't see a thread so I thought I would start one.
Things are moving right ahead and the boys are working hard to entertain us.
My favorite game so far was last night's Iowa Loss! I cannot believe there is NO criticism of Iowa coach giving his son Connor a scholarship for SIX years - he offered him his first one while Connor was still in High School. And the Covid portal has kept him on two MORE YEARS.
He is a middling player at best. Of course we still have scholarship son Patrick for another season....and two more McCaffrey sons coming up (one in high school who will no doubt be offered a scholarship during his senior year....and a boy in Jr. High.......).
None of them are really outstanding players. Last night at the end of the game Connor was bawling and moaning because his college career is finally over. My guess is he'll be back next year on his father's coaching staff.
Rant over.
Tonight: Purdue!

Glad I switched over from the Kentucky game to watch fdu/Purdue. Purdue couldn't do anything right. How do you the big 10 player of the year only take one in the last 12 minutes of a one and done game. Last year I was on reddit and there was a comment by a Purdue fan who hated Matt painter. I pointed out they kept Gene keady around for decades and he never got them to the final four. Looks like painter may be another keady. He has underperformed in March.

I love my bruins but that was like an epic choke job. They have had a few of the same choke jobs in the second half this season. Which were infuriating but they were swept under the rug as ucla ended the regular season strong. But the inexplicable scoring droughts eventually bit them in the ass. How the fuck does a team not score a bucket in 10 minutes? They could have had 5 blind guys out there and one bucket would have gone in out of pure chance. And yet the bruins managed to go without a field goal for 50% of the second half. When that happens in multiple games, I blame it on the coach. There's something about Cronin's offense that is so timid.
Fuck drew timme.

UCLA were without two of their starters... Jaylen Clark and Adem Bona. And they were players with exactly the skills needed to match up against Gonzaga. That they were even in the game was a surprise.
Not scoring a basket for 11 minutes, being completely out-rebounded, and still the Bruins were ahead with 12 seconds, and it took another 34' shot to beat them.
R85 Did you pay attention this season? UCLA won the PAC 12 regular season championship by four games. The BIG 10 totally shit the bed in the tournament. No worries about Bruin basketball there - Bruin football? That's another story.

UConn is looking the best by far of all remaining teams. But they have to keep it up.
Andre Jackson is special. In his meeting with Coach Hurley after last season, all he wanted to discuss, according to Hurley, was what the team needed from him this season. He’s a real leader and sets the tone. As one writer noted, last night “he was everything everywhere all at once.”

Incredibly, I have FAU in the Final Four in my office bracket. It is the only team of mine left, but there is just one other who correctly picked a Final Four team. She has UConn in the championship game; I have FAU in it. If they both win Saturday, it will come down to the final game. If both lose next Saturday, we split the pot 75/25 in my favor because FAU is the lower seed. While it might not be a lot to most of you, the pot is $4000, and that is a lot to me.

R136 I went to his dad's summer basketball camp for six years in elementary and junior high school and Bobby was there for all but my last year. He was a basketball star at Indian Valley South high school. The Huggins family ran the whole thing, Charlie (father) was in charge, Bobby's brothers participated in the camp, and his mother and sisters ran the mess hall.
This was in the 70s, so before AAU took over secondary school basketball. I just looked it up and it's now an AAU feeder. I see the Huggins family is still running it, probably Linda (Bobby's sister).

DeSantis will blame the Fla losses on drag queens. Too bad, Ron, there goes your photo op.

I’ll root for the Puppies.
They have a guy from my hometown there.

I'm kind of surprised SDSU still has the Aztec name.

It’s a bad ass name, why not?

UConn feels inevitable. Throughout the tourney they’ve calmly taken care of business.
Every player is showing up.
Best shooter has a stomach bug all weekend? No problem.
Jackson, who is central to their offense, picks up two quick fails and has to sit? No problem.
It’s great to live in Connecticut.

As if you had anything to do with the win.

UConn should be a huge favorite. They've dominated in every game they've played in the tournament. But the Aztecs (a team name that was challenged in 2017 and was pretty much embraced by the SDSU community) is a group of big, strong, football-like players... it's going to be a rough and tumble game and if the refs continue to "let them play" I predict you'll see an upset.

I'm behind the Aztecs all the way - but it will be a great game to watch.....
Unless UCONN pulls away in the first few minutes and leads all the way......

Go Huskies! While my team is out, I'm an ACC loyalist above all else.

Huskies are no ACC… But we are happy to have you rooting for our guys.

I have the Huskies winning the whole thing on my chart -- in fact, I might actually win money this year.

Jordan Hawkins of UConn just declared for the draft. He was charmingly shy. And effusively thankful to people like Dan Hurley and his teammates.
Seems worth rooting for.
