Salt Cod Cakes

Despite it being Saint Patrick's Day, I will be making salt cod cakes for dinner tonight.

Does anyone have a recipe for these that you love? I've never made them before and I am looking at a recipe by Jasper White.

Thanks!

^^^Is this what my Nonna called "baccala"?

by Anonymousreply 1March 17, 2023 9:00 PM

salted cod is particularly Irish?

by Anonymousreply 2March 17, 2023 9:03 PM

Baccala is dried salt cod. You have to soak it, sometimes in milk, to remove the salt.

I wonder if Greg flakes it or uses it in chunk form?

by Anonymousreply 3March 17, 2023 9:05 PM

I think it's too late to start them, the cod has to soak a while.
salted cod is particularly Irish?

Let's start at the very beginning ...

I said, "Despite it being Saint Patrick's Day ..."

So no, R2, salted cod is NOT particularly Irish.
I think it's too late to start them, the cod has to soak a while.

Yes, it has been soaking for nearly 24-hours. Which reminds me that I need to change the water again.

Hi, Greg.

R5 The greatest St. Patrick's Day tradition of all is asking retarded questions about St. Patrick's Day.

by Anonymousreply 8March 17, 2023 9:09 PM

Ooops, I read too fast. My apologies.

Lidia Bastianich has some great recipes with salted cod.

by Anonymousreply 9March 17, 2023 9:09 PM
I wonder if Greg flakes it or uses it in chunk form?

Jasper says to break it into flakes after it is cooked, R3.

by Anonymousreply 10March 17, 2023 9:10 PM

Making something out of salted snake would be far more idiosyncratic.

by Anonymousreply 11March 17, 2023 9:10 PM

Hi, R7!

How are you today?

Are you keeping up with all the drama surrounding Team Greg?

by Anonymousreply 12March 17, 2023 9:11 PM

WTF, R11?

Are you quite well?

by Anonymousreply 13March 17, 2023 9:12 PM

G@R10, flakes after it is cooked? You make the fishcakes with cooked flaked fish?

by Anonymousreply 14March 17, 2023 9:12 PM
The greatest St. Patrick's Day tradition of all is asking retarded questions about St. Patrick's Day.

R8, who asked a foolish question about Saint Patrick's Day?

by Anonymousreply 15March 17, 2023 9:14 PM

Doing well. I am not keeping up with the drama (What’s the drama?) and didn’t even realize there is a Team Greg. If there is a Team Greg I’m on it.

Greg team (I’m a Gays and Tennis poster.)
G@[R10], flakes after it is cooked? You make the fishcakes with cooked flaked fish?

Jasper instructs one to boil the fish for 5 minutes, drain it, then break it into flakes.

by Anonymousreply 17March 17, 2023 9:15 PM

Do you drain your cod?

by Anonymousreply 18March 17, 2023 9:16 PM
And THIS IS good old Boston, The home of the bean and the cod, Where the Lowells talk to the Cabots, And the Cabots talk only to God.

Decreased reading comprehension must be a symptom of long COVID.

I'll say it again, so I don't have to say it again:
Jasper instructs one to boil the fish for 5 minutes, [bold] drain it, [/bold] then break it into flakes.

A famous Boston toast, R19.

Here's one for New Haven:

Here’s to the Town of New Haven

The Home of the truth and the light

Where God talks to Jones

In the very same tones

That He uses with Hadley and Wright.

+++

And another one on Boston:

Here’s to old Massachusetts,

The home of the sacred cod,

Where the Adamses vote for Douglas,

And the Cabots walk with God.

My mom makes these to perfection. Takes forever to soak the lye out of the product.

by Anonymousreply 24March 17, 2023 9:49 PM

G2r17, I can deal with a parboil.
