He was a babe. Way better as a model than an actor.

He was insanely and terrifyingly good in [italic]Platoon.[/italic] That Oscar nomination was deserved.
I'm assuming he had an alcohol problem because he aged so poorly. Last time I saw him was as Mary McDonnell's estranged husband on [italic]Major Crimes.[/italic] Still charismatic, but oh, that face looked like bloated lunchmeat.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 17, 2023 10:25 PM |
R6 was he in that movie ? apart from Tuesday Well's performance, I only remember Keaton showing her pussy and Gere prancing around in a jockstrap. I thought Gere was the culprit

R8 Really? How can one tell? Are you a Photographer, or a Graphic Designer by chance? Genuinely curious.
He still has plenty of other charms though, if he's been artificially enhanced. Please don't tell me his thick curly hair is fake next!

I’m pretty sure that is indeed Jerry Hall in OP’s post.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 17, 2023 10:33 PM |
Well back then they didn’t have photoshop. Back then they would use makeup to draw on abs if the model didn’t have them OR if they had then but they weren’t deeply defined.

R9, I've told my Tom Berenger story on here many times. I won't bore you with it again (gist: I was 20 working at a very fancy hotel, he stayed there all the time when shooting in LA 0- he lived in South Carolina at the time, we became odd friends for about a year, I visited him on set many times, had his home phone number, etc.), but Tom was a great guy and the biggest drinker I've ever seen. Ever.
The man would drink an entire bottle of Tanqueray before dinner, two bottles of wine at dinner, then half a bottle of Sambuca after dinner. I have no idea who he managed or lived. He would do this every single night he stayed there too.

He showed them off in In Praise of Older Women.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 18, 2023 12:02 AM |
R33 I said this upthread, he did have great abs. However, they did draw on them to make them stand out more for the photo.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 18, 2023 12:26 AM |
He always had rough-looking skin, like Tommy Lee Jones. Still attractive and sexy, though.
Sounds like he's an alcoholic, based on what R26 said.
Here are some photos from a 2017 article. He looks like Robert Redford (another guy with rough skin) with a wig plopped on his head (like Redford).
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 18, 2023 12:34 AM |
What r26 said was fan fiction.

R42 these celebs see a shit ton of people everyday. Especially when traveling. But you were the one person he happened to befriend out of all the filming locations and traveling he’d done in the world by that point?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 18, 2023 1:07 AM |
Tanqueray gin used to be 100 proof. I see it's now 94.6 proof. Back in my drinking days, I could feel a difference drinking Tanqueray vs. other hard liquors, which are usually 80 proof.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 18, 2023 1:10 AM |
R44 I have no idea if he made other friends while traveling. I never asked. I assume he had friends all over the place. Maybe?
When he was shooting in LA, he'd stay at the Fairmont (where I worked) for a month or so. I was the lounge server. So I'd serve him every night. He liked sitting alone in the small patio near the koi pond. This was usually around 3-6pm. So it was quiet. He was often the only one there. So he and I would shoot the shit as he drank his gin and tonics.
Over time, we became sorta friends. It actually happens between a regular and server from time to time. I was a young wannabe actor and he invited me to set many times. Gave me a ton of advice - including a piece a took to heart: Don't do it unless you really love it.
I also got to know his wife and young toddler son. She was super nice, if a bit high strung.
I know this is hard to believe for you, but sometimes? People talk and get to know each other and then a strange thing sometimes happens: They like each other. Even stranger? They might even become something that resembles friends.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 18, 2023 1:25 AM |
That photo is old. Is older now and his hair is all white. This is a trailer that came out 4 months for a straight to dvd movie he did with Cam Gigandet.

[quote] Gave me a ton of advice - including a piece a took to heart: Don't do it unless you really love it.
R46, I've enjoyed your Tom Berenger stories. But I think this is an iffy piece of advice. Sounds like advice that only nepo babies (sorry), casting couch players or extremely lucky people can give.
Kathy Griffin said that her mom met Jill St. John (I think it was JSJ) and asked her: "Can you give me some advice for my daughter, who's starting out in the business?" JSJ said: "Say yes to everything [work offers]."
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 18, 2023 1:36 AM |
I think he meant don't go into acting at all unless you really love it.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 18, 2023 2:05 AM |
No mention yet of Butch & Sundance The Early Days, where he played the earlier version of Paul Newman? I always found this stance supercharged sexually, weirdly in both a dominant and submissive way.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 18, 2023 2:11 AM |
Thanks, OP.
I was going to start a Tom Berenger thread but you beat me to it.
Tonight I'm going to watch Shattered from 1991, starting Berenger, Great Scacchi, Joanne Whalley-Kilmer and Bob Hoskins. Berenger and Scacchi were gorgeous together. They don't make movies like this anymore with stars who look gorgeous and had sex appeal.
For awhile there, Berenger was A-list (Big Chill, Platoon, Shoot to Kll, Someone to Watch Over Me, Major League but then it moved to B and C list for him, with straight-to-DVD and streaming movies.
He was perfectly cast in Goodbar, both seductive and scary.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 18, 2023 2:14 AM |
Back then it was common for actors to fall from A-List. Sometimes they had comebacks that shot them back to the top but sometimes they never did.
I remember when John Travolta was no longer considered A-List until Pulp Fiction came out and shot him back to the top. Jamie Lee Curtis is another who had many ups and down.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 18, 2023 2:17 AM |
In the early days he seemed to be honing in on Ben Murphy’s career, and then he surpassed it and Ben basically disappeared.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 18, 2023 2:18 AM |
And then you had those stars who had enough notoriety and long period of hits that even if they had bomb after bomb they were still A-List. Those permanent A-Listers. Julia, Brad, Tom Cruise, Sandra, Denzel etc. are actors who are permanent A-List.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 18, 2023 2:19 AM |
I jerked off to him a lot watching At Play in the Fields of the Lord on VHS back in the day. Same with Bruce Willis in The Color of Night
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 18, 2023 2:19 AM |
R55 they literally had nothing to do with one another.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 18, 2023 2:19 AM |
R57 I’m younger than you (I think) but I was born in 1986. When I was a teen around 1999/2000 I would watch Cruel Intentions and jerk off to Ryan’s ass. And there was a brief full frontal shot from Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction I would pause and jerk off to lmao.
I guess teens today don’t have to do the shit we did, even in the late 90s and early 00s. But I also don’t like how accessible hardcore porn is for them.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 18, 2023 2:22 AM |
R32 I think Looking for Mr. Goodbar is excellent but I was once obsessed with the Roseann Quinn murder so I’m a bit biased. Many great performances, art direction, music…but dark as fuck and sordid…as was the real story. I have an old VHS tape of it but it may never be released on DVD (or streamed) because it has severe music clearance legal problems. My friend works at Paramount and checks every so often for me but nothing has changed. You can catch it on YouTube sometimes in foreign market versions (German subtitles, etc.) but it gets pulled.
The character that Berenger played was based on John Wayne Wilson.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 18, 2023 2:33 AM |
I believe r26. I think Tom seems like a nice guy, and I totally believe he drinks like a fish. It's a shame he let himself go and yet he's still likable and handsome.
He was also really funny in his guest stint on Cheers. I didn't make the connection until years later that he and Kirstie Alley had already starred together in Shoot to Kill a few years earlier.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 18, 2023 2:37 AM |
Did you ask Tom to pity fuck you when you got him drunk serving him drinks? Or offer to blow him at least

by Anonymous | reply 68 | March 18, 2023 2:56 AM |
R54 Richard Gere’s career looked over pre Internal Affairs/Pretty Woman. Even Al Pacino pre Sea of Love.
What’s funny about people like that is once they did come back, even if they had some flops, they still remained pretty much perma A list. I think just the nature of the business had changed starting in the 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | March 18, 2023 3:28 AM |
So, is Marisa Tomei a permanent A-lister?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | March 18, 2023 3:33 AM |
R70 I think she’s considered A-List in todays world and is respected now. A lot of people look back on her Oscar win now and don’t hate it like they used to, especially younger people who love films. She is also Holland’s version of Spider-Man’s Aunt May, given her worldwide exposure in modern day to young people. They all know her as Aunt May now.

by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 18, 2023 4:46 AM |
R50, it wasn't like that at all. He told me it wasn't the great life it's cracked up to be and that unless I loved the art and craft of it, to find something else. And he was totally right. Still, he let me figure that out on my own. Sent my headshot to his agent. And, like I said, invited me to set.
He was a really great guy, as I said. Tortured for sure. I think he hated fame. But hated the fact it had waned even more. Thus the drinking.
R65, he was straight. Not gonna lie, I was a very, very good looking man. I also liked older guys. Many a straight, older guy suddenly "turned" gay with me over the years. Especially after drinking!
But not Tom. He clearly liked playing the mentor role, but there was nothing sexual between us.

He played the repulsive hunk in “Betrayed” with Debra Winger. Over the top view of America from Costa-Bravas. Tom was the racist, white supremacist in tight denim. He made hate look sexy!

He used to remind me a bit of Paul Newman, but, unlike Newman, he didn't have much range as an actor and didn't age well.

Newman only had a career after James Dean died.

Newman benefitted from giving strong performances in his later years (Absence of Malice, The Verdict, The Color of Money, Nobody's Fool, The Road to Perdition) which referenced his aging. He embraced it and he was showered with great reviews and accolades.
