R10 He's the patron saint. My understanding is that people in Ireland actually prefer St. Bridget, but I'm American so I don't actually know.
The reason the feast of St. Patrick was historically such a huge party was that it falls in the middle of Lent and is a special day of dispensation- you're allowed to drink and eat whatever you want, basically. For instance, American Catholics can eat meat today even though it's Friday.

To the *handful of us*?
[quote] 34.7 million Americans identify as Irish to some degree, and the population of the entire island of Ireland is 6.6 million (Republic of Ireland has 4.75 million and Northern Ireland has 1.85 million).
Irish people and Jewish people have done an extraordinary job of exporting themselves globally!
It's amazing how specific the DNA-based genealogy is, too.
I am 33% Irish, according to Ancestry, and the only specific 'genetic communities' from Europe that have been identified are Irish: Connacht, North Mayo, South Mayo, North West Mayo. It's incredible when you look at a map how specific it is.
Meanwhile, somehow, 15% is just loosely "England and Northwestern Europe." I find it so interesting that the e genetics can pinpoint what are basically neighborhoods in one case and then in the other just broad geographic regions.
The Irish are a much more interesting culture and nationality than I think we in the US tend to view them, probably because so many Americans have some ancestry from there.
Happy St. Patrick's day! Sláinte!

The significance of St. Patrick's Day in Ireland is that St. Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. Which, today, seems like a dubious credit to his record—but given that Ireland has been traditionally hyperreligious, it makes sense that this was a touchstone remembrance day.
The Irish people were ahead of the US with same-sex marriage and electing a gay head of state, and they finally came along with respect to abortion rights even as the US is going backward in that direction thanks in great part to the Catholic domination of the US Supreme Court.
I'm absolutely anti-Christian in the American sense of Christianity equaling a self-assigned right to hate and harm others. However, my father has pointed out to me and it's difficult to argue that in the long course of history, Christianity has been an equalizing force despite all the harm it has caused, since it promoted literacy, schooling, it was the foundation of research universities, and life is much easier for the majority of people than it was in pre-Christian times. So I can appreciate how if people see St. Patrick as a positive figure based on his bringing Christianity to Ireland, that can be argued given how Irish people live today as compared with pre-Christian pagan times. But I also think the Catholic church is an abusive organization that perpetrated horrors in Ireland, and we're now at the point at which we should all be phasing out religious organizations and reconsidering what we can glean about ancient pagan spiritual beliefs. We can base future progress on a closer harmonious relationship with the natural world, keep symbolic celebrations we derive joy from and disempower abusive global church organizations.

R33 Brits dehumanized the Irish as apes in exactly the way they dehumanized African people. No difference at all. Many Irish people also now consider the potato famine to have been an attempted genocide of the Irish by the British; during the famine, while millions starved to death, British newspapers published cartoons of Irish people as apes and prominent British politicians gave speeches stating that Irish people were dying of their own stupidity because if they wanted to survive, they'd eat grass and seaweed.

R41, "the Irish" did not support Germany.
Perhaps you're thinking of Éamon de Valera's "courtesy" visit of condolence to the German Ambassador after Hitler's death, which came right at the end of the war and which was ill-advised but meaningless as far as the war itself goes.
When it came down to it, Ireland gave tacit support to Britain, some of it important.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 17, 2023 12:16 PM |
The Irish prefer St Bridget because, unlike St. Patrick, she was never enslaved. It had nothing to do with Lent.
The Irish gave up things like "linen" and "coal" for Lent, as a half joke. The poor gave up things like 'meat" (when there was so little around that people were dying left and right) for Lent.
