The best Beatles song is "I Am the Walrus."
In terms of Lennon's attempts at "something more."
Why is it better than "A Day in the Life"?
Because it is raucous, sharper in its observations, less pompous in its humor, more "fun" in being engaging and surprising, and plays the same theme as "Day in the Life" with a more-developed view. If you want an existential void don't pretend-sing "I'd love to turn you on," as if YOU have any answers. "I Am the Walrus" is braver in making it clear that in the raucous activity of life there are no "answers."
Also, "Dear Prudence" is better than "Strawberry Fields" for the same reason.
McCartney's approaches are very different - he wanted to entertain (usually), likes his themes to be overt and more conventionally clever than Lennon's, remained connected to older song stylings, and had less murky depths.
