White House demands Pence apologize for 'homophobic joke' aimed at Buttigieg

The White House on Monday asked former Vice President Mike Pence to apologize for what it called a "homophobic joke" he made over the weekend geared at Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

"The former vice president's homophobic joke about Secretary Buttigieg was offensive and inappropriate, all the more so because he treated women suffering from postpartum depression as a punchline," White House press secretary Karine-Jean Pierre said in a statement. "He should apologize to women and LGBTQ people, who are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect."

Pence, headlining at the annual Gridiron Club dinner in Washington for journalists and politicians, mocked Buttigieg for taking parental leave after the birth of his adopted twins while he said Americans faced issues with air travel.

"He took two months 'maternity' leave whereupon thousands of travelers were stranded in airports, the air traffic system shut down, and airplanes nearly collided on our runways. Pete is the only person in human history to have a child and everyone else gets postpartum depression," Pence said, according to reporters present.

Notably, Buttigieg's twins were born prematurely, developed Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection (RSV) and one was hospitalized and put on a ventilator, a point his husband, Chasten, called out in a tweet directed at the rumored 2024 presidential hopeful.

"An honest question for you, @Mike_Pence, after your attempted joke this weekend. If your grandchild was born prematurely and placed on a ventilator at two months old - their tiny fingers wrapped around yours as the monitors beep in the background - where would you be?" he said.

Marc Short, Pence's former chief of staff, called the response from the White House "faux outrage."

"The White House would be wise to focus less on placating the woke police and focus more on bank failures, planes nearly colliding in mid-air, train derailments, and the continued supply chain crisis," Short said in a tweet. It's far from the first time that Buttigieg has faced criticism from those on the right for taking paid parental leave, with Pence's language echoing lines repeatedly espoused by Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

"Pete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child. Paternity leave, they call it. Trying to figure out how to breastfeed, no word on how that went," Carlson said on his prime-time show two months after the twins were born.

ABC News' Gio Benitez asked Buttigieg on Monday if he thinks Pence owes him an apology, to which he responded, "You know, I'll I'll let others speak to that. You know, it's it's a strange thing to me because last time I saw him, he asked me about my kids like a normal person would. I guess, you know, at a political event in white tie, it's a little different. But again, there's not a lot of time for me to focus on the Washington game because we have real work to do."

Buttigieg has spun the criticism before to say that "maybe some good came out of" the attacks he's faced.

"It's helped us have a conversation about parental leave," he told co-hosts of "The View" in Oct. 2021. "Every American ought to be able to get paid parental leave. That's something that the president believes in and has proposed. It's something I believe."

But, he continued, "When parents take that parental leave, they need to be supported in making that choice."

Pence notably broke with Carlson's recent whitewashing of Jan. 6 in his speech Saturday and offered his strongest rebuke of former President Donald Trump yet.

"History will hold Donald Trump accountable for Jan. 6," Pence said at the dinner. "Make no mistake about it: What happened that day was a disgrace, and it mocks decency to portray it in any other way. President Trump was wrong. His reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day."

"Tourists don't injure 140 police officers by simply sightseeing," he added. "Tourists don't break down doors to get to the Speaker of the House. Tourists don't threaten public officials."

Only a nasty queen could come up with a line like that.

Which makes Mike Pence even more suspect.

by Anonymousreply 5March 14, 2023 1:36 AM

You can be sure it was a boy-toy “aide” who came up with the line, R4. She ain’t that clever.

by Anonymousreply 6March 14, 2023 1:38 AM

I despise Pence, but there is a a double standard here.

No one was demanding apologies to Pence for the inbred, fundie nutbag jokes made about him and his mother, er, wife, no matter how close to home they hit.

by Anonymousreply 7March 14, 2023 1:43 AM

Paternity leave is stupid, in general. Instead of making efforts to increase the length and benefits for the person who actually pushes the child out of her body (the mother), they added leave for the father whose sole contribution to the entire existence of the child was busting a nut and then taking a damn nappy nap.

Don't you think it would be helpful to have another adult around the house doing things like cooking and cleaning to assist the person who actually pushed the child out of her body? Perhaps, not having to go to work might allow them to take turns getting up a night?

by Anonymousreply 10March 14, 2023 1:50 AM

Pete had to hold Chasten's hand while he experienced post-partum depression for a few months after giving birth to twins from his gaping mangina.

by Anonymousreply 11March 14, 2023 1:53 AM

r10 The father can do that when he gets home from work, just like most mothers are expected to do anyway when that maternity leave exhausts in like...4 months. The extra resources they spent to come up with paternity leave could've been made to improve maternity leave.

A lot of fathers who take paternity leave end up getting on the new mother's nerves because now she has two damn babies to take care of 24/7. If anything, his going to work is a break.

Mike Pence is a dedicated Christian and as such is uncomfortable with sexuality, particularly same sex. Homophobic jokes will land well with the Republican base, who are overwhelmingly Christian. It’s a brilliant move that may get him a few more Christian supporters. He’s got a long way to go and we shouldn’t laugh, he could win this thing.

by Anonymousreply 14March 14, 2023 2:02 AM

I don’t really get how the joke was homophobic.

Because he used the word maternity?

by Anonymousreply 15March 14, 2023 2:15 AM

Hypocrisy. Anything Pence said datalounge had already found hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 16March 14, 2023 2:21 AM

Buttigieg is a grifter. There is no way in hell he deserved paternity leave for adopting when most women who give birth still don't get maternity leave, and he took this generous vacation at a time when the country most relied on him to do a job he either could not or would not do. This demand for an apology is not a good look and will only remind the public of the real harm that was done by Buttigieg being such a spoiled little rich piggie unwilling to do any real work.

by Anonymousreply 23March 14, 2023 4:05 AM

I'm NOT a troll--just someone who dares to voice unpopular opinions on DL and refuses to ignore certain truths. Fact the facts-- Pete BOUGHT those babies. He is a rich man who paid and used a human female to be impregnated and to "labor" to birth those babies. Then, he wanted weeks off work with pay to "care" for the babies he bought when he certainly could afford and did have help to care for the babies--unlike most parents in the country he pretends to serve.

by Anonymousreply 24March 14, 2023 5:48 AM

R14, Pence has virtually no chance at the Republican Nomination. He's polling in single digits.

by Anonymousreply 25March 14, 2023 8:44 AM

It is important for Buttigieg and the White House to respond to Pence's homophobic remark in a clear and firm manner. Here are a few possible ways to respond:

Condemn the remark: Buttigieg and the White House can publicly condemn Pence's remark and express that such comments are unacceptable and harmful to the LGBTQ+ community.

Educate on LGBTQ+ issues: This could be an opportunity to educate the public about the importance of inclusivity and diversity in the workplace, and highlight the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals.

Promote acceptance and diversity: The White House can reinforce its commitment to promoting acceptance and diversity by highlighting policies and initiatives that support the LGBTQ+ community.

Encourage dialogue: This could be an opportunity to start a dialogue about LGBTQ+ issues and to promote understanding and acceptance of diverse perspectives.

Ultimately, the response should be respectful, professional, and focused on promoting inclusivity and acceptance, while also clearly stating that homophobic remarks have no place in society.

by Anonymousreply 35March 14, 2023 10:46 AM

Perhaps Pete should have waited before buying twins at a critical juncture in his highest profile position: at the shipping crisis during the pandemic when the head of the DOT was in the spotlight.

Let’s face it, taking months off for PAID (VIA TAXPAYER)“paternity leave” was not great given that women (who actually labor and deliver babies) cannot even get paid Maternity Leave in the US.

Loathe Pence, but Pete’s actions with his whole “months off work” at the beginning of job as Sec. of DOT screams entitlement and poor professional judgment.

Pete Buttigieg is such an opportunistic grifter. He was a nobody, who decided to run for president even though he knew he didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning. Yet because he was the gay guy, he knew he would get an enormous amount of attention. He lost, of course, because most Americans outside of the coastal cities don’t want to think of their president having butt sex with another dude in the Lincoln bedroom. However, because he got so much attention, Joe Biden now has no choice but to show to his base that he is not homophobic and give the gay guy a cabinet position even though he is not qualified. So now Pete has a cushy job making $221,400 a year plus all kinds of benefits, including paid paternity leave, and yet he does basically nothing. And when someone calls him out on his grift, he plays the gay card.

He’s really not much different than these gay hustlers who get drunk and total their cars and then go on GoFundMe, asking gullible gay men to buy them a new car. By the way, I heard a rumor that Pete Buttigieg is thinking about doing gay porn, and his chosen porn name will be Collin Simpson.

[quote] Um, isn't acknowledging racial disparities in the construction of airports, train stations, highways, exactly his job?

Not the poster you are replying to, R59.

Believe you are correct. Yet Buttigieg made these comments when larger issues were on deck for the Secretary of Transportation. So he elevated the topic of diversity whilst downplaying a major crisis in East Palestine, Ohio. Again, not a good look.

If this were the only misstep, then, one could seemingly look past this. However, he’s made multiple mistakes: bragging that airline travel would be smooth last December when State AGs and members of Congress (including those of his own party) warned him of impending airline issues, the months-long “paternity leave” (with resulting indignant partner responding on social media) endless junkets, private planes while promoting climate issues, FAA/DOT failures with the 5G rollout, holidaying while critical railroad negotiations were at hand, desires for expensive cameras on roadways versus improvements of said roads, etc, etc…

The above history suggests he’s inept.

Seems Buttigieg would be better served as a SM star who goes on television to “sass” others and walk red carpets.

by Anonymousreply 60March 14, 2023 9:51 PM

There is no way a Secretary should have taken a 2 month long leave. A week to be with the kids, and then maybe a few half days. But, it is not fair to the American people who have someone so high up in politics totally disregard his duty for so long. If a female Secretary just gave birth, I would have more sympathy.

Also, how is it homophobic? Are they implying that men cannot give birth? Transphobic!

[quote] Chasten Buttigieg, who said he doesn’t expect to hear from Pence, called the remarks “part of a much bigger trend attacking families.”

[quote] “I spoke up because we all have an obligation to hold people accountable for when they say something wrong, especially when it’s misogynistic, especially when it’s homophobic, and I just don’t take that when it’s towards my family, and I don’t think anyone else would, especially when you bring a very small, medically fragile child into it,” he said.

[...]

[quote] Pence defended his comments Thursday night after speaking at a Republican Party dinner in New Hampshire.

[quote] “The Gridiron Dinner is a roast. I had a lot of jokes directed to me, and I directed a lot of jokes to Republicans and Democrats,” he told reporters. “The only thing I can figure is Pete Buttigieg not only can’t do his job, but he can’t take a joke.”

r108 Fathers really shouldn't get paternity leave in the first place. Only the mother. And if they do, it shouldn't be 2 months. That's ridiculous. I'd find 2 weeks more reasonable than 2 months. Fathers don't carry, birth, or breastfeed the baby. Their bodies aren't healing. While mom is in labor, he has the luxury of chilling in the waiting room and stuffing his face at the vending machine.

They should be making sure the income stream is kept stable, the house is in order, and the meals are prepared. That doesn't require extended time off work to accomplish. Period.

Hell, if we were dogs, fathers wouldn't even be allowed near the newborn without the mother snapping. Fathers don't help whelp the puppies; which is just hilarious to witness in person.

r120 Nothing I said was false. Fathers, indeed, play an intricate and important role in their children's lives. This role does not require months off of work post-partum to accomplish. It's the exact opposite considering mothers don't get paid maternity leave. The family leave system in this country is backwards.

by Anonymousreply 122March 17, 2023 8:45 PM

Women also bleed constantly for WEEKS after giving birth and have to practically wear a diaper for a month due to that blood that doesn't stop flowing. They also have stitches from incisions. And they have lactating breasts. It's laughable that Pete took all that time off when most women don't get anything like that time off for giving birth and yet women have a biological need for the time off. Pete is a spoiled clown.

by Anonymousreply 123March 17, 2023 8:53 PM

Pete ordered and paid for some surrogate to carry twins so that he and Chasten could cosplay Ozzie and Harriet. He did this while accepting a new job and while Chasten was bitching on Twitter about his college debt. And then he took paternity leave when most women in the US don't get any maternity leave.

by Anonymousreply 124March 17, 2023 8:59 PM

So? Do you think the Dept’s 60,000 employees sit around twiddling their thumbs if the boss is out? Would your workplace completely fall apart if your boss left for two months? Plus, he had his computer. I’m sure he was checking in all the time.

And yes you’re being stupidly crude. But Russians aren’t known to care about their kids much

by Anonymousreply 129March 17, 2023 9:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 130March 17, 2023 9:33 PM

If Pete had any decency, he would cancel himself immediately.

by Anonymousreply 131March 17, 2023 9:36 PM

Pete had to make a choice between two sets of performative gestures. One was the older patriarchal one of suck it up and do your job, make a sacrifice even though you are a new father and one child may be sick. Think 1950s dad. The other was anti-patriarchical sensitive equalitarian dad. He choose the second. People who think he should have chosen the first criticize him cause it represents a new order of things. Pete always chooses the second type of performative gesture. For instance talking about racial discrimination in construction instead of the nitty gritty nor a train disaster. I don’t know what this means but I suspect vast numbers of Americans don’t like it. And not just Magyars and Southern rednecks. Middle America in the Jersey suburbs. It makes them uncomfortable on some level like Admiral Levine and the suitcase stealer. Biden’s administration in their eyes is full of this and it will only hurt in the next election. Not one thing, but the cumulative effect of all these weird non-masculine things combined with perceived incompetence.

But hey, just keep supporting it!

by Anonymousreply 132March 17, 2023 9:45 PM

As the only time I ever personally encountered a vagina was when I was exiting my mother's, I rely on my sister for information about childbirth. She says women take maternity leave because they're physically exhausted after the pregnancy and giving birth, frequently need to heal from episiotomies or Caesarians. Can have complications after the birth (note the high incidence of maternal mortality in the US). They also need to feed the kid constantly and don't get any sleep. Fathers take paternity leave mainly because they lose sleep with an infant in the house screaming at all hours of the night.

Infants don't give a fuck who is looking after them and can't even focus their eyes for the first 2 months so have no fucking idea who's looking after them.

My sister maintains there should be parental leave but when the kid gets to 18 months and starts being a total pain in the ass. Babies do nothing but eat, sleep, scream, piss and shit. 2 year olds are terrors who need constant supervision.

by Anonymousreply 133March 17, 2023 9:45 PM

Magats not Magyars^

by Anonymousreply 134March 17, 2023 9:46 PM

I believe both parents, no matter the gender, and their newborn should have that time to bond together. I feel it is very beneficial to the baby and parents. It also allows the mother to rest and recover physically if both parents are there to help and support each other. The importance of the father is not being acknowledged, R133.

by Anonymousreply 135March 17, 2023 9:55 PM

r128 My father is dead, asshole. Way to make this personal instead of actually comprehending what the fuck I said. I specifically stated the father's role, while necessary, is different. That difference does not necessitate extended post-partum leave. He can and should do other shit to help. Most of that help involves going to work. Maternity leave is unpaid in this country. It shouldn't be but it is.

Pete took paid paternity leave for two months while mothers (who actually give birth) don't get that long and it's not paid. I don't know why you're making this personal. Are you a disgruntled father? Do you have kids? No? Then shut the hell up with you funky-ass attitude.

The GOP is however afraid of Buttigieg and so they’re trying to Hillary him. They pick apart everything he does and it’s always bad. They event criticized him for not appearing at that train crash soon enough—when no Secretary of Transportation goes to train crashes because it’s in the realm of the NTSB, not Dept of Transportation.

If Buttagieg did show up, the GOP criticism would have been why is he even showing up when it’s a NTSB problem?!

by Anonymousreply 151March 18, 2023 2:02 AM

Parents need leave for a long while to bind with their kids. The fact that traditionally, fathers have not have paternity leave may be part of the problem that children had with their fathers.

My neighbors are a gay couple that adopted two kids. They told me that when they adopted the first, one stayed home for a month; when they adopted the second, the other one did. I don’t think it’s coincidence that the one that stayed home is closest to that child

by Anonymousreply 152March 18, 2023 2:05 AM

Pete took paternity leave because he wanted head pats from the media. “Fathers need leave too!” and “adopted parents need leave too”. He wanted to have his Tammy Duckworth moment.

The issue is, he has a high level job. You can say “The Secretary doesn’t do anything”, but I can assure you he will point to his work as a Secretary when campaigning for President. He can’t have his cake and eat it too.

Why is this so hard to comprehend? He can literally work in any other job. But it is distasteful when he took 2 months leave when 1. He didn’t give birth, 2. His husband doesn’t work, and 3, he can literally just work half days, work a few days a week, or find another solution.

He put his would be viral moment ahead of the country and is mad it backfired.
