Brendan Fraser's acceptance speech was embarassing!

I like Brendan and good for him that he made a huge comeback. But that speech made me cringe!

by Anonymousreply 183March 17, 2023 11:49 PM

Things didn't come easily for him?

by Anonymousreply 1March 13, 2023 4:07 AM

Thrilled that Butler lost but God don't let him anywhere near a stage.

by Anonymousreply 2March 13, 2023 4:08 AM

R2: Don't let Fraser anywhere near a stage! Lol

by Anonymousreply 3March 13, 2023 4:08 AM

A pre-speech slap would’ve helped immensely.

by Anonymousreply 4March 13, 2023 4:10 AM

I thought it was worse than JLC's speech.

by Anonymousreply 5March 13, 2023 4:10 AM

Let me guess, the theme was “I’m a victim!”?

by Anonymousreply 6March 13, 2023 4:11 AM

Anxiety is real though, and it can definitely spiral over the years. I agree it’s cringey, but I can’t say whether it’s an act or not.

by Anonymousreply 7March 13, 2023 4:16 AM

I'm diabetic so had to turn him off.

by Anonymousreply 8March 13, 2023 4:17 AM

What do you expect? He's been going on like this for years in interviews.

by Anonymousreply 9March 13, 2023 4:19 AM

Diabeetus intensifies

by Anonymousreply 10March 13, 2023 4:19 AM

Butler was great as Elvis.

by Anonymousreply 11March 13, 2023 4:19 AM

No one will remember Austin Butler 5 years from now. Before elvis he was best known for dating Vanessa Hudgens

by Anonymousreply 12March 13, 2023 4:21 AM

Was the big blowsy blonde who kissed him his ex-wife? If so, he must be very forgiving, because she tried to take him for every cent he had.

by Anonymousreply 13March 13, 2023 4:21 AM

It was fine. He was happy to win - so what? He graciously acknowledged the other guys nominated against him as well

by Anonymousreply 14March 13, 2023 4:21 AM

What was the guy's name who gave the Best Picture speech for EEAAO?

by Anonymousreply 15March 13, 2023 4:24 AM

Xi Jinping, R15

by Anonymousreply 16March 13, 2023 4:25 AM

R15 Jonathan Wang.

by Anonymousreply 17March 13, 2023 4:25 AM

What a comeback, from a career ruined by loss of looks, dreadful career decisions and a nasty, money draining divorce to winning an Oscar. Quite incredible. But will winning an Oscar really do a lot for his career? That remains to be seen.

by Anonymousreply 18March 13, 2023 4:32 AM

The next Bruce Willis

by Anonymousreply 19March 13, 2023 4:34 AM

I didn't see the whale. Was it really that good?

Or did they give it to him because they felt sorry for him

by Anonymousreply 20March 13, 2023 4:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 21March 13, 2023 4:40 AM

I had a man's hand on my taint too.

WHERES MY FUCKING OSCAR???!?!?!?!?!

by Anonymousreply 22March 13, 2023 4:41 AM

Fraser came across as pathetic. And he’s not aging well. It’s not like this Oscar is going to lead to a career renaissance for him

by Anonymousreply 23March 13, 2023 4:42 AM

Came across like he had borderline schizophrenia and was being heavily medicated

by Anonymousreply 24March 13, 2023 4:44 AM

Was that James Hong?

[quote] What a comeback, from a career ruined by loss of looks, dreadful career decisions and a nasty, money draining divorce to winning an Oscar. Quite incredible. But will winning an Oscar really do a lot for his career? That remains to be seen.

My prediction is that he will probably do TV dramas with a couple of movies a year.

It’s not an act. The man has intense social anxiety. It’s obvious. And I think his awkward behavior would have been hot when he was still hot for some reason. It’s funny I don’t ever remember him being like this but I don’t remember much of his public persona at all.

by Anonymousreply 30March 13, 2023 4:52 AM

Something in me rebels against the idea of giving actors therapeutic Oscars. Fraser’s (and Curtis’s and Kuan’s and Yeoh’s) neediness came across as creepy to me, it seemed to be about their narratives not their acting.

by Anonymousreply 31March 13, 2023 4:57 AM

He was very emotional, but he seems to have been through a lot. He seems very sensitive, to be in that industry. Congratulations to him.

by Anonymousreply 32March 13, 2023 5:16 AM

A few years ago he had a big part in the 4th season? Of Showtime’s “Affair.” Dominic West’s ( Noah) ex wife Maura Tierney got drunk and hit a guy with her car and killed him. Dominic West took the wrap and went to prison. Brendan Fraser played a creepy punitive loser prison guard who was obsessed with Noah. He tormented him for most of the season.

by Anonymousreply 33March 13, 2023 5:18 AM

Of course the ex-wife is back now that his career is on the upswing.

by Anonymousreply 34March 13, 2023 5:29 AM

R18 No, Oscars don’t do much anymore. It will possibly lead you to George Clooney casting you in some bullshit all star Hollywood ass kissing movie no one wants to watch.

by Anonymousreply 35March 13, 2023 5:35 AM

R34 That's not his ex-wife, it's his girlfriend. But for sure dude has a type.

by Anonymousreply 36March 13, 2023 5:37 AM

Boy, Roxanne Gay is going to be pissed about this! She wrote an editorial for the New York Times lambasting "The Whale": "the onscreen portrayal of fatness bears little resemblance to the lived experiences of fat people. It is a gratuitous, self-aggrandizing fiction at best." Is she of the belief that morbidly obese people lead happy, fulfilling, productive lives despite their food addiction? I guess she's offended because she's a hugely overweight person she considers "The Whale" a personal insult. Anyway, she ought to watch a few episodes of "My 600 lb Life" and see how wonderful the lives of the 600 or 700 lb people on that show are. A lot of them lead lives even more dismal than Charlie in "The Whale."

{quote] That's not his ex-wife, it's his girlfriend. But for sure dude has a type.

His "type" seems to be the stereotypical Hollywood bimbo with long bleached blonde hair and huge breasts. But here's a question: Is he gay? A very closeted gay? The gay rumors were going around way back in his "George of the Jungle" days. I know he's whined and cried to high heaven about being "assaulted" by the guy who grabbed his "taint" but is that a concerted attempt by him to deflect gay rumors? Big blonde girlfriend with big boobs, horror at being touched on his private parts by a man....is that all designed to scream "I am a heterosexual man!" Anyway, I've always gotten a weird vibe from Brendan Fraser. It's like he puts on an act in an attempt to hide something.

by Anonymousreply 40March 13, 2023 6:21 AM

Reminds me of Mickey Rourke’s resurgence from doing The Wrestler. Agree that we’ll have to see where the Oscar takes him.

[quote] AMPAS doesn't go for pills and booze and lil mick carpet munchers.

I saw Colin Farrell's sex tape. It's very funny and totally unerotic, as celebrity sex tapes tend to be. The woman whose pussy he's licking looked like a tranny. And my well have been.

by Anonymousreply 42March 13, 2023 6:24 AM

What was funny about the sex tape?

Good for him. He does look like he's been through a lot.

But I cannot stop thinking about a DL's post in another thread that Brendan should play Rodney Dangerfield in a movie because that was who he reminded me of when giving his speed.

by Anonymousreply 50March 13, 2023 7:19 AM

What a con job he pulled on the academy and all the stupid voters.

This guy is acting like a toddler and getting praise for it. It’s outrageous.

What a gas bag. And the people were lapping it up.

I'm sad Colin didn't win - porn tape or not. He campaigned hard with every ounce of the old "ourish" charm he had & he still came up short. Still, I guess, I'm glad they didn't give it to Butler who may go on to have a great career like Farrell's - or not.

For those that didn't watch The Whale and wonder about the nautical references in his speech. In the movie, he was an online English/writing teacher and seemed to be obsessed with an essay his daughter wrote in 8th grade about Mobi Dick. The reference to the Whale was about Mobi Dick not referring to Fraser's character. He keeps rereading the essay. I skipped through the movie because it was so grim so I missed a lot of it.

The Academy Awards is something you're supposed to watch like Saturday Night Live even though it no longer serves a purpose.

Even before Covid movie theater attendance was dropping as people preferred staying home and streaming movies on their 60 inch flat screen tv in surround sound- more comfortable and far cheaper.

Once Covid started movie theater attendance PLUMMETED and still hasn't recovered.

Even baby gaylings know that.

by Anonymousreply 134March 14, 2023 4:30 AM

His involvement in Gods & Monsters must have fueled the gay rumors. And i think he lived in the heart of West Hollywood in the late 90s, not far from Silver Spoons Coffee Shop. There was a funny blog at the time called Driveways of the Rich and Famous and his was featured.

by Anonymousreply 135March 14, 2023 6:31 AM

It would be unfair and disrespectful to label his speech as "embarrassing" without knowing its content or context. An Oscar acceptance speech is a momentous occasion in an actor's career and an opportunity to express gratitude, share personal experiences, and raise awareness about important issues. It is important to approach any public speech with respect and an open mind, and to judge its content based on its substance and impact, rather than on preconceived biases or assumptions.

R136 Weird. I thought it was an opportunity to spout drivel and make yourself seem far more important and interesting than everyone knows you’ll ever be.

by Anonymousreply 137March 14, 2023 9:24 AM

This was how Dustin Hoffman won for Tootsie as well.

When John Lithgow won for The World According To Garp it was a complete body transformation.

R137 I love talking to robots too

by Anonymousreply 140March 14, 2023 10:26 AM

R135- Hugh Grant played a gay character recently And there aren’t any gay rumors about him.

by Anonymousreply 141March 14, 2023 12:43 PM

Wonder why the story of his winning was on the gay news section of nbcnews.com:

NBC OUT CULTURE MATTERS TikTok creator Zach Willmore is vlogging his life living with HIV

NBC OUT & PROUD When parents are the activists: PFLAG celebrates 50 years of LGBTQ advocacy

by Anonymousreply 142March 14, 2023 2:03 PM

Yeah that was so funny.

Every line turns into something about a whale or deep sea or something nautical.

SNL should parody that. It's like a dad pun speech.

by Anonymousreply 143March 14, 2023 5:45 PM

Does anyone remember what he was saying?? Something about the abyss of deep sea looking up and seeing the sun or the whale or something

by Anonymousreply 144March 14, 2023 5:45 PM

R144 He was on a dive deep beneath the ocean....there was an oxygen line going up to the surface...there were people on a boat monitoring his....zzzzzzzzz

More body mod and/or gender swap Oscar winners:

by Anonymousreply 146March 15, 2023 5:08 AM

Charlize Theron in Monster.

by Anonymousreply 147March 15, 2023 3:00 PM

R145 thank you.

Yeah whoever said he had way too much time to insert as many whale metaphors in there as possible was spot on. Seriously hope it gets parodied by Eddie Murphy or something.

by Anonymousreply 148March 15, 2023 8:26 PM

He can get parodied by Eddie Murphy, but which actor is holding an Oscar?

by Anonymousreply 149March 15, 2023 10:47 PM

I think Brendan is a sociable Asperger person. That shit probably manifested differently when he was young and good looking. But then that’s what just makes me think autism is not even a real thing. It’s just a western invention for weirdos or people who do not want to be sociable and brains don’t crave it. Eastern philosophy, and even some minority cultures in the west will tell you everyone is different. Personalities can be varied. Autism diagnosis came about because of hyper vigilance of social conformity.

by Anonymousreply 150March 15, 2023 10:57 PM

Charlize may have uglied it up. The woman she was portraying was fugly but she acted the living shit out of the role. She became Eileen Wurnos.

by Anonymousreply 151March 15, 2023 10:59 PM

{quote] I think Brendan is a sociable Asperger person.

And what makes you think that, you silly twat?

[quote] One of my most incandescent Oscar memories (which I wish I could find a still photo of online) was of him, Ian McKellen, and Lynn Redgrave in 1999, leaning forward together in their seats, smiling radiantly and unguardedly (Gods & Monsters was up in three categories). Brendan was sitting behind with his arms draped over Ian (or vice versa?). Pure happiness.

I have the "Gods And Monsters" DVD signed by Ian McKellen and Lynn Redgrave who I met at The Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS Annual Flea Market. When I told Ian he was robbed of The Oscar (he lost to Roberto Benigni) he grabbed my hands and said "Oh thank you!" Now that Brendan has started to do conventions, I hope to meet him too. He should have been nominated along with McKellen and Redgrave.

[quote]When Farrah Fawcett and Cher made themselves ugly for a role (The Burning Bed" and "Silkwood", respectively) I don't think they won any awards but they were praised to the skies for doing so

Cher won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture and was nominated for the Oscar and BAFTA

Fawcett was nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe.

IMBD is your friend.

by Anonymousreply 154March 16, 2023 11:30 AM

R152 Cunt I will give you the most vicious tongue lashing this side of the Mississippi. People will be in stitches and you in tears. Come on, it’s early and I got time today.

by Anonymousreply 155March 16, 2023 1:15 PM

Didn’t watch the speech but am just relieved he won. People can quit pretending they care about him now.

by Anonymousreply 156March 16, 2023 1:30 PM

R142 I thought it was because the whale he was playing was gay.

I couldn't be bothered. Obviously celebrity awards are a matter of importance to you.

by Anonymousreply 158March 17, 2023 12:49 AM

Frasers wins fat.

by Anonymousreply 159March 17, 2023 12:53 AM

R158 manages to be insufferable about the fact that he's not very well informed.

by Anonymousreply 160March 17, 2023 12:53 AM

Fraser should star in a Jackie Gleason biopic.

by Anonymousreply 161March 17, 2023 12:54 AM

R160 thinks knowing Cher won a Golden Globe for "Silkwood" is being "well informed." The poor thing.

by Anonymousreply 162March 17, 2023 1:55 AM

Fraser should slim down and be hot again. I think he’s really upset that no man will touch that taint again.

by Anonymousreply 163March 17, 2023 1:57 AM

I’m surprised that winners seldom simply thank the Acadamy and those involved with film- why do they turn it into a life-related dramatic event. Job well done is how I see it. Yes yes, actors and film stars are touchy self centered folks. But I sure prefer the class thank you’s, short, simple with a touch or humor and/or humility.

by Anonymousreply 164March 17, 2023 2:05 AM

If he does any comedian's biopic, it needs to be Rodney Dangerfield, not Jackie Gleason.

I always liked the fella (Fraser), but starting a few years ago around the publicity for this movie and his Oscar win, I'm seeing a lot of mental instability. I feel bad for him.

And I agree that the speech was embarrassing. I couldn't actually understand most of what he said. This Oscar season was absolutely dreary and glamour-free overall, and most of the people who were nominated seemed dumb and maladjusted.

by Anonymousreply 165March 17, 2023 2:09 AM

People say his career was dead for a while because he was groped, he stood up for himself, and then powerful people black balled him. He doesn't just have a screw loose, which is true of many actors. He seems to be even a bit more "off" than average. (From someone who interacted with him and no longer has a career in Hollywood) So why would they continue to make him the face of big picture films if he even seems to have the proclivity to go nuts? They still work with Tom Cruise, so how bad off is Fraser? Shia Lebouf is similar to Fraser in that they are both nutty has-been blockbuster draws, it's just Shia was smart enough to make the switch to indie and art films sooner.

by Anonymousreply 166March 17, 2023 2:30 AM

Let him have his moment. A lot of the people who've won acting Oscars in the last few years will never (have never) been seen again. This is it for them.

by Anonymousreply 167March 17, 2023 2:32 AM

R167 You seem upset.

by Anonymousreply 168March 17, 2023 2:36 AM

I got through Brendan Fraser and I'm here!

by Anonymousreply 169March 17, 2023 2:37 AM

Brendan's speech was fine. I'm very happy for him. He deserved it.

by Anonymousreply 170March 17, 2023 2:47 AM

[quote] Everybody was so thirsty for their awards this year it was like the hunger games. I don’t remember it being like this.

This

by Anonymousreply 171March 17, 2023 2:48 AM

He’s a big loser. That’s what I thought the whole time you were standing there blubbering. Good Lord, or as more commonly sit on here, Mary!

by Anonymousreply 172March 17, 2023 2:50 AM

Lithium and hair plugs.

by Anonymousreply 173March 17, 2023 2:57 AM

[quote] I’m surprised that winners seldom simply thank the Acadamy and those involved with film- why do they turn it into a life-related dramatic event.

Hollywood really does seem like high school with money. For this crowd, winning an award is like being voted Prom King or Prom Queen. Because they're all "actors," then they have to create a scene. They've all probably been practicing this scene (on stage, winning an award) for years, if not decades.

by Anonymousreply 174March 17, 2023 4:39 AM

Two of his sons came with him to the awards. They both looked odd. Neither was dressed appropriated for the occasion. One was wearing a pale blue jacket that was too small and a black bow tie; they both looked like they came from a thrift store. His other son, who had red hair down to his shoulders like a girl, was clothed entirely in black. It was hard to tell exactly what he wearing because he was uniformly in black, but whatever it was it had a high neck. Neither of them resembled his father. One of his sons (he has three) did not attend; I hear he has mental problems and obesity. I guess Fraser has some crosses to bear when it comes to his boys.

by Anonymousreply 175March 17, 2023 5:33 AM

R59 I think it's because of the aftermath of the pandemic. I can't really articulate how, but it's absolutely playing a role.

by Anonymousreply 176March 17, 2023 6:34 PM

R59 The Academy used to make actors really "earn" their awards. Leo DiCaprio comes to mind there, and he finally got one with The Revenant. The last 10 years or so, things have gone off the rails and *anyone* can get a gong if they play their PR right. So they all go ape with the PR campaigns and are totally shameless about it. A lot of the winners we've had over the last five years will never be in anything notable ever again.

by Anonymousreply 177March 17, 2023 6:57 PM

Were his sons adopted? I mean no harm.

He has emotional problems obviously but seems to have a good support system in place. His speech was bananas but his speaking voice is very deep and resonate so that made up for it somewhat.

I hope the best for him. He's harmless if you really stop and think about it.

by Anonymousreply 178March 17, 2023 7:50 PM

I’m so sick of everyone acting like the Oscars is some super secret all powerful organization and that it’s mad corrupt. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood do not have Oscars. It’s a complicated system, obviously not just based on merit. But that goes true to all awards. It’s not only popularity contest. If that were true then Monique would not have an Oscar. Sean Penn would not have an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 179March 17, 2023 8:19 PM

I actually appreciate that this year all the winners seem to be all around good people.

by Anonymousreply 180March 17, 2023 8:21 PM

R177 None of the winners this year are newcomers to the industry. And that is bullshit. You’re doing selective memory. Marissa Tomei wasn’t in anything notable until 20 yrs later. Cuba Good Jr proved not only that he could not pick good scripts, but also that he couldn’t lead a film. There are othet indie type winners whose names I can’t remember who fizzled into obscurity. Selective memory is ruining the culture.

by Anonymousreply 181March 17, 2023 8:26 PM

R54 God, this trans jokes whenever a guy has long hair.

The boy is only 16. He is still a young kid, he has delicate skin and long hair, but his facial features, particularly jawline is masculine.

by Anonymousreply 182March 17, 2023 11:18 PM

The red haired is not fem at all. He has deep voice and masculine face, is rather big and his mannerism are not effeminate. He is just very young, he is an underage boy and has long hair and porcelain skin.
