I always thought a "dry drunk" was someone who stopped drinking, but never dealt with the underlying issues that caused them to drink. Hence, technically sober but with a shitty personality. This linked article supports that definition & goes further to say that dry drunk syndrome can mean you're close to relapsing.

R28 Interesting take. I always thought a dry drunk referred to an addict who quit taking the substance but never got serious intense therapy, went through the 12 steps, or did major work to examine and change their behaviors.

There's a lot of shitty behavior that goes on with addicts. And people don't come with instruction manuals as to how to deal with other humans or how to minimize conflict. For those who have ideas about 12 step programs but have never been in one, a LOT of the focus is on your own behavior and how to gracefully handle conflict and disagreement.
