Jody Watley

I've never seen a singer so emulated in my high school years like Jody was, other than Madonna, of course.

My junior and senior years 1987 to 1988, it was almost overnight, all of a sudden, every Italian girl had long perms, big hoop earrings and trying their hardest to look just like her.

I remember her from Shalamar since my older aunt was a huge fan. I hope she's still making music and will check in a few minutes.

I really like her.

The look is called Banji.

by Anonymousreply 1March 11, 2023 2:08 AM

Is she a lezzy?

by Anonymousreply 2March 11, 2023 2:20 AM

Jody Watley follows me on Instagram.

Troll. No one gives a fuck about this one hit wonder/nobody from the 80s. Get stuffed, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5March 11, 2023 2:32 AM

Such a great song, R4

by Anonymousreply 6March 11, 2023 2:35 AM

OP It's like you've read my mind, I've been banging "Still a Thrill" non-stop for the past two weeks. It's a recent obsession as I remember being underwhelmed by it when it first came out. It's really something, though -- funky with pop hooks in just the right places. Do we know who the male dancer in the video is?

Jody deserved more time in the spotlight. Those first two albums still sound fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 7March 11, 2023 2:38 AM

Wrong R5 troll... As I said, I can't remember any other female pop star from back then that was so greatly emulated like Jody was other than Madonna. Jody is exceptionally beautiful and natural, so I can understand why girls wanted to look like her.

I accidentally bought the dance remix from BMG music club ("8 albums for 1 penny!") and thought something was wrong with my cassette the first time I played it.

R9 it broke my babygay heart when I found out that Shalamar were not really friends, and broke up acrimoniously.

by Anonymousreply 11March 11, 2023 2:42 AM

Check out the dancing!

Her vocals on this track are like delicious froth.

I used to play this album over and over when I was in junior high.

She was much better as a solo act.

R3 I LOVE YOUUUUUUUUU.

by Anonymousreply 14March 11, 2023 2:48 AM

R5 You need serious help. Your post history screams "desperate for attention" - wow

by Anonymousreply 15March 11, 2023 2:48 AM

She did one GREAT song that still holds up today which was on a fairly decent album (Jody Watley 1987) - but that was it. She was virtually unknown after that album. Seems like a nice lady and she looks fantastic too. Image at link from September 2022.

But nobody ever emulated her OP. What a very tall story you tell!

Sorry but it's the truth. Other than Madonna I can't think of any other pop singer that half the girls dressed like. Jody was absolutely stunning and girls wanted to look like her.

by Anonymousreply 17March 11, 2023 3:24 AM

You're out of your mind R17.

Watley was stunning yes and still is stunning - but nobody dressed like her.

The way she dressed was a popular style at the time. She didn't invent it as a personal "brand". She just wore the current fashion. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

by Anonymousreply 18March 11, 2023 3:29 AM

R7 - his name is Tyrone Proctor

by Anonymousreply 19March 11, 2023 3:35 AM

I love how people on here tell you something you know as a fact. Half the girls in my school immediately started dressing like her. Perm, skirts, hoops and all. Are you that far up your own fucking ass you can't see past your own view. Whether it was popular at the time, these girls in my school purposely took their influence from her. I am actually flipping through my yearbook. her influence mass massive in the Boston area at that time. Not only in the schools but the clubs.

by Anonymousreply 20March 11, 2023 3:35 AM

R20 = 😂...

by Anonymousreply 21March 11, 2023 3:37 AM

R19 thank you!

R20 More than a few girls in my high school had their "Jody Watley hoops" -- and they called them just that.

by Anonymousreply 22March 11, 2023 3:43 AM

I found out on a podcast that her “Hasta la vista, baby” in “looking for a new love” came before Terminator. The move copied her line, same cadence and all.

by Anonymousreply 23March 11, 2023 3:44 AM

She and Bananarama were the only women on Band Aid's "Do They Know it's Christmas".

by Anonymousreply 24March 11, 2023 3:48 AM

R23 also = 😂...

This thread is hilarious!

Did Back to the Future or Aliens take anything from Jody R23? I'll bet they did!

Jody Watley sold more records than Janet Jackson AND Madonna combined.

by Anonymousreply 27March 11, 2023 3:50 AM

I thought Jody Watley was going for Sade's look in the "Real Love" video, specifically the black and white sequences where she's sporting the long ponytail. She even seems to be channeling her mannerisms, like when she's looking down and to the side, all sad and mournful. She really looks very similar to her.

When it first came out, I had the TV on with the sound off, because I was doing something else. I looked up at the screen for a couple of seconds and thought "oh, new Sade. Cool." It wasn't until I paid closer attention that I realized it wasn't a new Sade video, but a new one by Jody.

So much prettier than Janet, even before the mutilated nose disaster. If that's where you want to take my thread, I'll go there.

by Anonymousreply 31March 11, 2023 3:55 AM

And nobody was dressing like Pineapple Jackson.

by Anonymousreply 32March 11, 2023 3:56 AM

R31 I think she’s prettier too because she just looks natural. And her skin doesn’t look bleached either, another common household product of the Jacksons. Janet did have a beautiful smile though. I won’t front. She is Whitney Houston pretty, with a more exotic look. Is she West Indian?

by Anonymousreply 33March 11, 2023 3:58 AM

[quote] Is she West Indian?

Nope. African American from Chicago. She kinda looks like Thelma from Good Times in this picture from 1977.

Jody’s fade away years lasted a few albums. One of my friends really liked her. I don’t remember any of it but didn’t dislike it. Maybe Toni Braxton replaced her?

by Anonymousreply 35March 11, 2023 4:04 AM

David Fincher directed the real love video. She had 6 top 10 hits in the late 80s and number ones on the r&b and dance charts not too bad.

For years she wanted nothing to do with shalimar and hates/hated Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewitt with a passion. She bought the shalimar name in 2014 and can’t help but think that was a huge fuck you to them.

by Anonymousreply 36March 11, 2023 4:04 AM

R35 Haha it’s funny how popular artists who never moved past their eras, are viewed. Two very different r&b artists. Jody did dance pop, Toni did ballads midtempo and slow jams hugely popular in the 90s. Jody also had supermodel looks. Toni became a sex kitten after the plastic surgery.

by Anonymousreply 37March 11, 2023 4:07 AM

WTF???

"Looking for a New Love"

"Don't You Want Me"

"Some Kind of Lover"

"Most of All"

"Real Love"

"Friends" (featuring Eric B. & Rakim)

"Everything"

"I Want You"

"I'm the One You Need"

"Your Love Keeps Working on Me"

"When a Man Loves a Woman"

by Anonymousreply 38March 11, 2023 4:09 AM

I interviewed Jody in the late '90s and her people were emphatic that there were to be "NO questions about Shalimar!"

by Anonymousreply 39March 11, 2023 4:12 AM

People only remember "Looking for a New Love" R38.

by Anonymousreply 40March 11, 2023 4:12 AM

Don't mention Shalamar on her Facebook page - she will go OFF!

by Anonymousreply 41March 11, 2023 4:14 AM

Jody invented hoop earrings and hair.

by Anonymousreply 42March 11, 2023 4:21 AM

She and Sade had a similar look and style. I do remember girls emulating the look with the hoop earrings and jeans / pants bunched up at the waist. It was a nice, clean look (hair pulled back).

by Anonymousreply 43March 11, 2023 4:22 AM

Jody invented hair R43.

by Anonymousreply 44March 11, 2023 4:24 AM

Beautiful but didn’t have much of a voice. Definitely similar to Janet in that “talk through a song” way.

by Anonymousreply 45March 11, 2023 4:26 AM

Yeah, R42 & R43. pretending to be me. I should have added "only the girls that could pull off her look" which was a lot. She probably wasn't big in the one-room schoolhouse inbred towns of yore.

Poor, fat Damita and her saddlebags could never.

Jody invented sisters R48.

by Anonymousreply 49March 11, 2023 5:02 AM

We used to call her "Jody Wobbly", due to her inability to stay on key in the studio.

by Anonymousreply 50March 11, 2023 1:45 PM

R28 - you perhaps mean “sequins”?

by Anonymousreply 51March 11, 2023 1:52 PM

Real Love was my favorite song.

by Anonymousreply 52March 11, 2023 2:31 PM

R1 that's interesting, thanks.

Seems to be a Nuyorican-origin trend out of the ball/drag scene.

One of my favorites from the Red Hot & Blue album. Fun video. She looks gorgeous and is all in as the cabaret singer.

She should do a set of standards as a comeback.

R37 No. Her later albums were ballad heavy. I remember that much. Babyface -ish (Toni was a babyface girl) I looked Jody up - her last hit was with - wait for it! - Babyface.

by Anonymousreply 56March 11, 2023 7:51 PM

Still a Thrill is the only tune I appreciate from this performer. The video is memorable too. She has long, doe eyes, a unique beauty trait.
