It's not great art by a genius auteur. It's a popcorn movie that rolled out a clearly ill Val Kilmer and the son of his dead buddy for conflict.

Frankly, having a guy who is clearly Ice Man II: electric bugaloo be the son of the man is much more believable than his being some random dude with the same attitude. Also, as a practical matter, Kilmer's Admiral having Maverick train the pilots knowing one of them is his own son is a LOT more believable than his doing it purely out of old friendship. It would also have added some more depth and tension to Powell's character which was little more than eye candy - much appreciated eye candy - but, eye candy nonetheless.

The Top Gun sequel was overrated shit.

I have to disagree with the TGM take here. Glen Powell’s character was more like Maverick in the original film. Rooster was more like Ice Man. I was surprised that they sort of dropped Powell’s character in the second half. A lot of the younger characters had little development.

Because Powell is not the star. Teller is far more accomplished than Powell.
