I'm rewatching Six Feet Under

I cannot believe how much I forgot and I have a feeling I will see things I didn't pick up the first time.

by Anonymousreply 90January 5, 2024 2:05 PM

I watched it recently for the first time, OP. Anything in particular you can think of?

by Anonymousreply 1March 7, 2023 10:16 PM

Aww, enjoy OP! Such a great show.

by Anonymousreply 2March 7, 2023 10:24 PM

One of the best shows ever.

by Anonymousreply 3March 7, 2023 10:25 PM

Such a profound work of art.

by Anonymousreply 4March 7, 2023 11:34 PM

I've been thinking of rewatching this as well! Do you want to watch together OP? Are you hot?

by Anonymousreply 5March 7, 2023 11:38 PM

2hot4belief R5.

by Anonymousreply 6March 7, 2023 11:47 PM

Do you see dead people, OP?

by Anonymousreply 7March 7, 2023 11:48 PM

I loved Frances Conroy.

by Anonymousreply 8March 7, 2023 11:51 PM

Brilliant show.

WEHT to the gorgeous black actor who played Michael C Hall's boyfriend? Blanking on his name.....

by Anonymousreply 9March 7, 2023 11:55 PM

Mathew St. Patrick, R9. I regret to say that he hasn't done much since.

by Anonymousreply 10March 8, 2023 12:05 AM

Keith was very hot.

by Anonymousreply 11March 8, 2023 12:10 AM

This will sound so Mary!, but I’d like to rewatch SFU but it means so much to me that I’m not ready

by Anonymousreply 12March 8, 2023 2:32 AM

R12, when my partner and I started watching it recently, he felt the same as you do.

by Anonymousreply 13March 8, 2023 10:00 AM

During the final scene of the series when they show the dates of when key characters die, the mother was supposed to have died in 2023. I remember watching that episode in 2005 thinking that 2023 seemed so far away.

And here we are.

by Anonymousreply 14March 8, 2023 10:55 AM

Don't burry her yet, R14. It's 2025, not 2023. but yes, time did fly.

by Anonymousreply 15March 8, 2023 11:29 AM

That little Latino is red hot 🥵

by Anonymousreply 16March 8, 2023 11:40 AM

Brenda!

Brenda’s slutty friend!!

Brenda’s brother!!!

Brenda’s mother!!!!

BRENDA!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 17March 8, 2023 12:04 PM

Claire, do you have an eating disorder? I wish.

by Anonymousreply 18March 8, 2023 2:02 PM

The only thing I don't like is David's tedious catholic guilt thing.

by Anonymousreply 19March 8, 2023 3:13 PM

I get it r12. Wait until it feels right.

by Anonymousreply 20March 8, 2023 3:53 PM

Jesus, Brenda - what the fuck?

by Anonymousreply 21March 8, 2023 4:53 PM

Best tv show ever. Enjoy, OP.

by Anonymousreply 22March 8, 2023 8:23 PM

Best opening credits/song, best series finale and great stories and acting. I feel like watching it again too.

by Anonymousreply 23March 8, 2023 11:25 PM

I bet DARKMINGELORD loved how gay Keith turned straight for the Lindsay Lohan-type character.

by Anonymousreply 24March 8, 2023 11:28 PM

In poll after poll, the Six Feet Under finale is either at the top of the list or in the top five.

The others are MASH, Cheers, Mary Tyler Moore, The Wire, Breaking Bad and Seinfeld.

by Anonymousreply 25March 8, 2023 11:44 PM

I watched every episode except the last one.

by Anonymousreply 26March 8, 2023 11:45 PM

What is The Wire?

by Anonymousreply 27March 8, 2023 11:56 PM

R26 why not?

by Anonymousreply 28March 9, 2023 2:00 AM

I loved SFU, especially for introducing me to Chris Messina and David Norona.

And damn, that final episode.

by Anonymousreply 29March 9, 2023 3:07 AM

It’s my favorite show ever. That finale wrecked me. I was much more into tv in those days and no show had yet affected me on that level.

by Anonymousreply 30March 9, 2023 4:03 AM

OP which streaming service are you using to watch it? A few years ago it was on Amazon Prime but then all HBO content got removed. I think it's on HULU as well as HBO. Just curious what you're using...

by Anonymousreply 31March 9, 2023 4:05 AM

Its on hbomax R31.

I'm really enjoying it this time. I think last time I watched it for the first time it was while I was at drinking viewing parties so the alcohol blurred a lot if it. Didn't realize that while Brenda sucked the life out of Nate Billy was sucking the life out of Brenda and totally forgot how crazy Billy was.

by Anonymousreply 32March 9, 2023 6:27 AM

One of my favorite shows of all time. The acting was sublime and my favorite was Peter Krause. He inhabited that role.

by Anonymousreply 33March 9, 2023 6:30 AM

R29, gay showrunnrers can always be relied upon for male eye candy.

by Anonymousreply 34March 9, 2023 10:15 AM

It used to be my favorite show, and probably still is, but like R12 unfortunately it comes with its emotional baggage: and watching this all alone or with someone else what I used to watch with the love of my life might savagely test my capacity for resilience, so I've been sitting on that fence for about 12 years now. Like others upthread I also love Frances Conroy so much that my youtube channel is made of quite a lot of short clips of Ruth being Ruth like the utter meltdown in the pilote episode: "There’s been an accident. The new hearse is totaled. Your father is dead... Your father is dead and my pot roast is ruined". Thank you OP for the mixed bag of feelings!

by Anonymousreply 35March 9, 2023 10:40 AM

R34. Love that observation. And I thank them!

by Anonymousreply 36March 9, 2023 12:21 PM

Definitely in my Top 3-5 of favorite TV shows.

Alan Ball should be doing more projects of this style.

by Anonymousreply 37March 9, 2023 12:24 PM

How is the picture quality? It was pre-HD, correct?

by Anonymousreply 38March 9, 2023 12:35 PM

David calling those gay chat lines must really date the show!

by Anonymousreply 39March 9, 2023 12:36 PM

Narm!

by Anonymousreply 40March 9, 2023 2:08 PM

r29, how could you not mention Josh Stamberg as Sarge?

by Anonymousreply 41March 9, 2023 2:39 PM

Mmmm, Sarge in his tighty whities in the doorway of the bedroom...."is that bed big enough for one more? It's cold out in the living room." Woof!

by Anonymousreply 42March 9, 2023 2:46 PM

Is there a clip of that Sarge scene somewhere out there? Please? Pretty please??

by Anonymousreply 43March 9, 2023 2:50 PM

R41 Why should I mention someone that YOU found hot? I don't even remember that character, obviously he wasn't for me.

by Anonymousreply 44March 9, 2023 8:04 PM

Forgot how much I loved Sarah's Topanga Canyon house.

by Anonymousreply 45March 13, 2023 11:51 PM

I think the mid to late 90s....early aughts, HBO had their best shows.

by Anonymousreply 46March 14, 2023 12:15 AM

Upon my second viewing I have more sympathy for Brenda and her brother though she's the ultimate self-saboteur which is difficult for me to sympathize with but I understand more. Ruth is a flake and on the spectrum hence the affinity with weirdo Arthur. I also liked Lisa a bit better. First time around she came across as a big drip.

Funny how viewing at different ages changes perspective.

by Anonymousreply 47March 18, 2023 7:03 PM

If it’s yellow, let it mellow.

If it’s brown, flush it down.

❤️

by Anonymousreply 48March 18, 2023 7:35 PM

I've rewatched this show three times. I'm always struck by how incredibly mean Kieth is to David and how David just puts up with it. It's kind of sad.

by Anonymousreply 49March 18, 2023 7:39 PM

During its run, I used to watch and my late husband would be sitting there reading. He said he really wasn't interested in it. During one of the last episodes of the last season, I said out loud "Nate is a cad." He turned to me and said "Nate has always been a cad!" Not watching, right. He watched the final episode with me and said it was the best series finale ever and I agreed.

by Anonymousreply 50March 18, 2023 7:44 PM

Dead Lisa to Brenda on her wedding day:

"You're insides must've got damaged from all that anonymous cock..."

by Anonymousreply 54March 19, 2023 7:53 AM

a big complaint I had with the show as it developed was how mean Claire became. And all that drug taking is so boring. The characters in Transparent was big druggies too so it must be a Jill Soloway thing.

by Anonymousreply 55March 19, 2023 8:03 AM

Brenda's mom is probably the funniest character in the show. I love the episode where Brenda goes with her to confront her father's mistress.

by Anonymousreply 56March 19, 2023 8:09 AM

Best fucking ending of any sitcom on American television, period!

Every death from SFU...

Grew to love SFU because how it dealt with death. It's often so random and of course unexpected.

Nate's death was one that got me.

SFU and The Sopranos were so good that I have had such high standards that I haven't really gotten into any other series, not that I watch much TV anymore. The finale, as many have said, is simply the greatest television ever. Enjoyed Man In The High Castle (Trump had been "elected" and was on heavy meds) and Sense8, during a relapse, but eventually lost interest after I became healthy and lost interest. Binge watched Arrested Development, then got into Transparent. Too bad Jeffrey Tambor turned out to be an asshole. Would like to get into TV series again. Any suggestions??

by Anonymousreply 60March 19, 2023 8:23 AM

R60 you should check out The Deuce. It's an extremely well-made HBO show about people living on the fringe of society in Midtown Manhattan. It follows prostitutes, pimps, pornographers, gay men, dive bar workers, cops and city officials. There are three seasons: 1974, 1979 and 1984. As you can imagine the city starts off pretty grim in 1974 and then goes off the rails by the 80s. It's filled with wonderful clothes and music yet doesn't feel like a cheesy period piece. The characters all feel real. I'd highly recommend it if you're interested in the bad old days of NYC.

by Anonymousreply 61March 19, 2023 12:22 PM

I hated Nate from the moment he pulled that sell the funeral home , no wait don't sell it thing in the first two episodes . And everyone treated him like he was the one to make that decision , not David who was slaving in it out of a sense of duty to his family while Nate was off finding himself somewhere with organic vegetables .

by Anonymousreply 62March 19, 2023 12:30 PM

I agree R57. It was very original. The fate of each character.

by Anonymousreply 63March 19, 2023 12:51 PM

Oh, Ruth...

R19- It was Protestant guilt not Catholic.

by Anonymousreply 65March 19, 2023 2:09 PM

I remember that episode when Brenda has sex with these two good looking young guys she picks up.

That scene was sexy. I’d like to meet two good looking slim DUDES like them and have a threesome.

by Anonymousreply 66March 19, 2023 2:14 PM

R66 you totally missed the whole meaning of that episode. It wasn't sexy.

Yes, Claire'sittle bitch routine got old fast. Her art school phase and friends were insufferable. Trying too hard to be edgy and pretentious and then her trying to be a lesbian phase.

Lisa's boss was hilarious. The petulant complaing about the baby taking attention from her emotional needs. Lisa's "what am I supposed to do, put her up for adoption?" and the hopeful "can you?" expression.

by Anonymousreply 67March 19, 2023 2:50 PM

R67- Far worse than her was Meadow's pretentiousness on The Sopranos when she has her parents over for dinner at her place with her Columbia friends. She was so FUCKIN condescending to her parents.

by Anonymousreply 68March 19, 2023 2:56 PM

Never saw that show R68.

by Anonymousreply 69March 19, 2023 2:58 PM

r61, thanks - you sold me. Will get HBO for a while to watch it. Was in San Francisco during those years and didn't visit Manhattan until 1993. We had "Tales of The City," lol.

by Anonymousreply 70March 19, 2023 4:57 PM

My favorite HBO series other than SFU is “The Leftovers”, especially Seasons 2-3.

by Anonymousreply 71March 19, 2023 5:10 PM

Best series-ending episode ever.

by Anonymousreply 72March 19, 2023 5:38 PM

Good luck with The Deuce. I hated most of the storylines on that show and way too much James Franco.

by Anonymousreply 73March 19, 2023 8:58 PM

R73- I agree. That show was a DUD.

Yet HBO made that other show which was another version of The Deuce called Minx- the production values on that show SUCKED

by Anonymousreply 74March 20, 2023 1:30 AM

R73 you must not value your time very much if watched a show for three years even though you hated most of the storylines. That's a lot of time you'll never get back.

by Anonymousreply 75March 20, 2023 5:42 AM

I watched SFU while I was going through chemo. My mother was staying with me. I was on steroids, completely wired and we’d binge watch a few episodes at a time. It would be 2, 3 a.m. and as the closing credits rolled, I’d turn to my mother and plead, “One more? Please?” She always said yes.

DL fav Robin Byrd made a small fortune off those phone chat lines.

Pity for Ms. Byrd and others was by 1990's internet revolution rolled around and everyone started moving onto online chat rooms. People having PCs at home made that switch possible which decimated telephone chat business models.

by Anonymousreply 78March 22, 2023 11:30 AM

I recently rewatched Six Feet Under in its entirety. It was such a beautiful show and has held up remarkably well. Except for the cell phones, this show could've been made yesterday.

Now that I'm much older than I was during its' original run, the themes of life, loss and death really hit closer to home for me.

I was in my mid-late 20s back then. Watching it now, I kept ruminating on the passage of time, and was constantly flashing back to what I was doing in the early 2000s and how it seems like yesterday but at the same time so long ago. I wasn't expecting that. It was a strange feeling.

Amazing the emotions you can have from watching a tv show.

Brilliant show that has held up beautifully.

by Anonymousreply 79April 3, 2023 12:49 AM

Claire's last boyfriend - Ted? The Republican? - was gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 80April 3, 2023 1:05 AM

Yes, speaking of "holding up beautifully", his name is Chris Messina.

Joanna Cassidy as Brenda and Billy's mother, the fabulous crazy bitch Margaret Chenowith, was perfection. Cassidy was phenomenal in that role, I wish she'd had more scenes.

Thank you, r79. Planning on re-watching the series with my partner when we retire next year.

by Anonymousreply 84April 3, 2023 4:08 AM

r84 watching the show after so many years have gone by since the original run, as a much older person, will make it even more special and poignant to you. I couldn't believe how emotional I got watching it, and as I said in my above post really thinking about the passage of time. I bet you and your partner will be surprised by how differently you feel when you watch it now.

BTW the final scene in the series finale is still devastating. I was sobbing. That IMHO is the best ending of any series, ever.

by Anonymousreply 85April 3, 2023 4:17 AM

Maybe it’s just me, but I still think Peter Krause is completely fuckable.

There was a DL thread last year (about bad celebrity behavior at restaurants) which suggested that Joanna Cassidy may have been playing a version of herself on SFU.

by Anonymousreply 86April 3, 2023 5:21 AM

Details, r86?

I watched the entire run and just finished the ending, WOW.

I agree it takes on a different meaning and interpretation when you watch it decades later.

And I hope the makeup people won an award for that ending, AMAZING
