The producers of "Xanadu" originally wanted him to costar with Olivia Newton-John in the movie, with more singing and dancing between the two of them (he probably would've dueted with her on 'Suddenly' rather than Cliff Richard). However, when he didn't show up for preliminary meetings, they realized they had a huge problem on their hands and let him go before he was even hired. That's when they offered Michael Beck (who was in-demand back then) the role of Sonny.
