thanks OP
I'm just glad Medvedev ended Djokovic's winning streak. Hopefully that shows other guys he's not invincible
wow last night's Acapulco's SF matches made up for the 1 sided stinker QFs on Thursday
I fully expected a Fritz vs. Rune final. Very surprised neither prevailed
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 4, 2023 10:38 PM |
Kostyuk reaches her first WTA level final with a tidy win over Collins.
It could get very interesting if Gracheva wins the other SF as Kostyuk has been 1 of the leading voices for Ukraine and in favor of punishing Russian players

R2 Kostyuk had grandpa in UPA, nazi ukrainian organization ! She has no right to speak about agreesion of russians and playing a victim. Her grandpa killed POLES just because they were POLES> This is pure genocide.

UPA was (is) ukrainian NATIONALIST organization , they were killing people because of their nationality. They killed thousands, thousands of people! For your information, Kostyuk and all ukrainians DON'T want to apologize polish people for massacre in WOŁYŃ. But in the same time they WANT WHOLE WORLD to accuse russians of agression on them . They glorify genocide form 1940's, they took our polish(back then) lands, houses, killing innocent babies and women in horrible way. But when russians do the same (according to them) is is a tragedy, because it happens to UKRAINIANS. They can do that to others, thought. Pathetic behavior. They think even Jesus is from Ukraine(seriously)

the camera made sure not to pan to Gracheva when Kostyuk started her speech with "Slava Ukraine!"
the winner and finalist also did not pose together with their trophies after the ceremony, breaking custom
hopefully there aren't any big finals this year with a Ukrainian vs. Russian. It'll be so awkward. On the men's side there are no top Ukrainian players but it could happen on the WTA

I'm looking forward to Indian Wells. I'm not sure Alcaraz will defend his points. His handlers need to manage his schedule better. They had him lined up for four tournaments in a row, all hard court, then he gets injured during the finals of the second one. He's already had a disturbing number of injuries for one so young. I hope he can stay healthy. He's the most exciting player on the tour right now.

So, I was watching the Tiafoe-Giron match (Battle of the Booty) at Indian Wells tonight, and they put the camera on Tiafoe's coach, Wayne Ferreira a few times. I used to watch Ferreira during the Sampras-Agassi era. To jog my memory about his career, I looked at his wiki page and perused some of the draws from his better Slam performances. I came across Jan-Michael Gambill who I totally forgot about. Decent player, real attractive, and eventually an out gay. Partnered with a really cute/hot architect and living in L.A. Nice life.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | March 11, 2023 5:38 AM |
Gambill appears on Tennis Channel as well, R154. He still looks good.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | March 11, 2023 5:56 AM |
Watched DL Boyfriends cutie Casper and Young Grigor who looks much thicker in person and was wearing very light tan shorts. I was right up front at Court 4 for his match and had a glorious view of his sweaty man panties. Little slut. I bet he's a bit of an exhibitionist. Too bad he had to retire. I wanted to see more of that ass.

Legz doesn't have bad midriff either
by Anonymous | reply 165 | March 11, 2023 10:12 AM |
I have a friend like Jack Draper: on some pics, they both can look super hot, like genuine top model material, and on some other pics, they just blend in, nothing special, what was this all about? From one picture to the next they can go from 7 to a 10 like it's nobody's business. Weird.
by Anonymous | reply 166 | March 11, 2023 10:15 AM |
Who people individually find 'hot' is clearly very subjective, but Draper by OBJECTIVE standards pretty much meets standards of being very good-looking - symmetrical, proportionate facial features, prominent cheekbones, full lips; and has a tall muscular, proportionate physique. The fact that he has a modelling contract would seem to bear this out.
Action shots of tennis players are rarely particularly flattering - particularly of facial features.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | March 11, 2023 10:19 AM |
Draper is very 'boy next door'.

I'm kind of wondering how Kecmanovic is still so high in the rankings. He never seems to go beyond the second round of most tournaments I see him in. Did I miss some deep runs or titles over the past year? For a player who's pretty consistently Top 40 he really flies under the radar.

by Anonymous | reply 219 | March 11, 2023 11:45 PM |
R219, I think it's just how he likes to wear his shirts - loose, sagging - not a more athletic fit. But I think that's just his preference. I think Nike would tailor his shirts to a custom fit that was more flattering if he wanted.

Jesus R225 can you give us a list of players that are "allowed" to have a nickname and those that aren't?
It's only really done on the 'X Team or Y Team posts'. Those that work (e.g. Daddy, Porna, Brat Rune, The UGOAT get picked up and used again, those that don't fly don't get used again.
Why do you feel the need to control what people do?

by Anonymous | reply 254 | March 12, 2023 8:41 PM |
Ruud fucked himself over by not resting during the off-season. He made 2 slam finals which is amazing but he didn't win. He chose to do that lengthy exo South American tour with Nadal who is in his final years on tour. Ruud is a top player but he's not a slam champ and he really should have been focusing on improving his game rather than making easy money
he had a horrible Australian swing then skipped his favorite South American clay swing. Now he comes into the spring mini-hardcourt season light on matches and low on confidence.
by Anonymous | reply 255 | March 12, 2023 8:50 PM |
Don't worry; Ruud will win a 250 in some far-flung part of the world to remain in the top 5.

Shelton annoyed me yesterday against Daddy Fritz... Came across to me as a cocky sob... Yeah, yeah, he's 20 years old and young, but I don't know I think he should comport himself more respectfully and mature. He was entering into entitled bratty Rune territory...
Can Brett Haber and his fellow FOP Courier stop talking for more than 1 minute!? Annoying as fuck.... Can't believe either one is married and to women!...

I think Mopsy (I like the nickname, so sue me) is a big talent. He played perfect tennis in the first set against Daddy. The serve is huge, the groundies are solid, and he's not afraid of the net. And he's a great mover. And he's only 20.

Tennis Podcast interviewed Medvedev on today’s pod.
He was smart and thoughtful and funny. I really liked him. He’s clearly a bright guy.
He was saying how slow the Indian Wells courts are playing. When he went to take a bathroom break, he told the chair umpire that, consistent with the courts, he played to pee slowly.

The standard has changed. Shelton can get obnoxious but he's always a good sport in the end, graciously congratulating his opponent. Have you seen the number of players who are always pumping themselves up, constantly fist pumping, chatting with their box, screaming at their box, interacting with the crowd. Shelton isn't anything out of the ordinary. Not everyone does this of course, but over the top exaltations are hardly rare.

for the poster complaining about Shelton, did it bother you when Seles pumped her fists after most points? Does it bother you that Nadal pumps his fists and yells "vamos!" against everyone but his idol Moya and Agassi, someone he considered to be a legend? Nadal has done this throughout his career. The only 2 quiet matches he played were against Moya and Agassi
Shelton is intense but he's not a brat. I can't wait to see him start beating more top players as he continues to improve

R284 I feel we're seeing Dark Hubie this year. His demeanour on court is a lot more antsy.
I kind of get the impression he's over-compensating for his previous 'nice guy' image and felt that people (inc. other players) saw him as a bit soft.
Hanging out with the PTPA guys and gals probably isn't helping.

I've liked Med ever since his ~small cat~ episode. I couldn't stop laughing about that. Plus, the chair ump posted a video of himself out on a speedboat the following day with a cat icon on it. He had a good sense of humor about the whole thing.

I attended IW the last three days. There are more people in attendance than I can ever remember. Crazy busy. I thought with no Roger, Rafa, Novak, Venus or Serena there'd be a drop off in interest but that hasn't been the case at all. I assume with this level of demand they might start to raise prices substantially for next year.
I watched a great many matches, although the highlight was stumbling across Tommy Paul practicing shirtless. He was sweaty and kept tugging his shorts down.
Khachanov looks like he's shaved his chest. Fuscovics has the best body on tour. Leylah Fernandez has found better bra support - boobs aren't sagging here like they were at the US Open.
COVID was awful for the tour - but if it brought anything positive it was ridding the tour of line judges, challenges, and all the disputes that went along with those things. Matches move much faster and there's little to no complaining these days. The other positive was that ballboys no longer hand deliver towels to the players which was a disguisting practice. I'm joking but I wonder if Venus hasn't returned to playing because of this change. She was the neediest player I ever saw - after every damn point she needed the ballboy to bring her the towel.

Don't get me wrong, getting stadium seats for "big" matches in later stages of Slams and other big tournaments is great and should be a bucket list thing if you're a big tennis fan.
But the first week of big tournaments when there's SO many matches and you never know what you'll stumble upon - incredible general admission matches, huge upsets, random inter-generational matches like Stan v. Rune, players walking about, players practicing (even shirtless as you note - it's really the way to go for a newbie going to see pro tennis for the first time. Even matches between two relatively unknowns in the first round can be fun.

Hi all! Here's my update from three days in the desert at Indian Wells. I went from Thursday thought Saturday. Thursday: The weather was absolutely perfect. 75 degrees, sunny, and a 10mph breeze. Beautiful snowy mountains as the backdrop. Match 1: Mackie McDonald vs Filip Krajinovic - First of all, I have a huge crush on Mackie. Being a fellow former Bruin, I felt extra need to root for him. He has AMAZING calves. To the point where the interviewer in the post-match interview asked him for his secret to great calves.
Match 2: Thanasi Kokkinakis vs Brandon Holt - The Kokk definitely has a gay following. There were potential DL'ers everywhere. Two guys sitting behind me were extra obnoxious when Thanasi would his a winner. Mr. Kokk has beautiful legs. Like tanned, and tattoo'd tree trunks. Thanasi can hit a fucking ball, I'll tell you that. I was pretty close to court level, and I was perplexed at how anyone could return a 136mph serve. Funny story - Thanasi came out on court with a fresh haircut, and the post-match interview he mentioned it was his 2nd haircut in as many days because the first guy "did him dirty." He had to get his hair fixed the next day.
Match 3: Hubi Huracz/Young Grigor vs Rajeeve "The Rampras" Ram/Joe Salisbury - This was a fun match, and a full house. Grigor was most definitely playing to the crowd. There was some cougar frau in the crowd who was yelling some creepy, yet funny affirmations towards Grigor. "That's alright, honey. You'll get it next time, sweet cheeks." Grigor is objectively handsome in person. Hubi was cute as fuck with legs for days. Joe Salisbury was also very handsome with a great body.
Match 4: Tommy Paul/Taylor Fritz vs Dan Evans/John Peers - I know some people think Taylor Fritz is scrawny, but he's totally my type. He floats my boat in every way. Prior to the match I noticed his whore of a girlfriend outside taking selfies or something. Jesus Christ she looks worse in person. I think she uses a jackhammer and industrial turpentine to get all the makeup off. ANYWAY, the match was fun. Tommy is also handsome, but I find him uninteresting. Not sure why.
Match 5: FAA/Shapo vs Ben Shelton & Brat Rune - I'm one of those Shapo blond leg hair fans. I also think FAA is objectively good looking. These two beat up on Rune and Shelton. It was obvious that the youngsters were inexperienced playing doubles at the pro level. Ben Shelton is a BEAST though. That kid was a crazy lefty serve. I expect big things from him. I saw Holger Rune play last year, and I really wanted to get another look at his beautiful legs. I could tell Ben has great legs too, but he was wearing white tights over them.
FRIDAY - Most of the day was pretty nice, and relatively cool for Indian Wells standards. Very breezy and partly cloudy. It did end up raining at 4-4:30.
Match 1 - Ivashka vs Van De Zandschulp - I really don't know why I picked this match. I think it was because I followed in a really cute guy into the stands. In any case, it was a fun match until Botic VDZ took a spill and hurt his ankle/foot. He played 2 more games and then retired.
Match 2 - Grigor vs Jason Kubler - I love watching Grigor play. I think his game is just as elegant as Roger's. There's a reason why they used to call him "Baby Roger." His backhand is a thing of beauty. I played D3 college tennis as an undergrad, and I thought my one-hander was pretty damn good....Then I saw Grigor's and realized just how beautiful, powerful, and accurate a backhand could be. Truly an inspiration. Anyway, Grigor played well, but Jason Kubler was very inspired in the 2nd set. 3rd set starts, Grigor gets down a break, and then suddenly retires. This was my 2nd retirement in as many matches. What are the odds of that?
Match 3 - Shapo vs The Ugoat. Was I going to see a 3rd retirement? Nope. 7 games in, and it started to rain. Day over for me. I headed back to my hotel and picked up some food and a bottle of wine on the way.
End part I
by Anonymous | reply 394 | March 15, 2023 4:38 AM |
Part II
Saturday - Rain was gone, and it was beautiful once again. However, the crowds were overwhelming. I had never seen it so crowded in the 20 years I've been going to Indian Wells., The lines for food were seemingly a mile long, and places were running out of food.
Match 1 - Il Gingio Jannik Sinner vs Richard Gasquet - This was a VERY fun match. I have never seen a cleaner ball striker than Jannik. I think he miss-hit only one ball in the whole match. Gasquet also has a beautiful backhand, and a fun game. I think he was a bit over-powered by Sinner. Jannik also has the cutest little bubble but. It's just adorable.
Match 2 - Tommy Paul vs Jan-Lennard Struff - I decided to give Tommy Paul another chance. I thought maybe I was missing something that others were seeing. His Insta-whore girlfriend was there - she looks exactly like Fritz's girlfriend. Anyway, I lasted a set of Tommy, and decided to bail because I was starving.
Match 3 - Porna Coric vs Alex Molcan - Borna is as handsome as ever, and his grunt while striking the ball gave me the vapors. Unfortunately, he played like total crap. He smashed his racquet in a fit of rage in the first set.
Match 4 - Sofia Kenin vs Rybakina - I wandered in to stadium 2 so I could get a good seat before the Mackie McDonald vs Holger Rune match. I honestly didn't really pay that much attention. I'm not really a fan of watching women's tennis.
Match 5 - Holger Rune & Mackie McDonald - It was the battle of the beautiful legs. I stayed for a set and a break, but I was truly hitting a wall, and my hangover from drinking half a bottle of wine the night before was catching up to me. Holger's legs are impressive, but I thought they were better last year. I think he might have grown an inch or two which made him look a little bit lankier than before.
Other notes: I ran into JJ Wolf at a practice court. He was walking right towards me. We locked eyes, and I said "Hey, JJ! How's it going?" he replied back with no pretense that it was going great. Short but sweet interaction. He still looks like he sells meth outside of the dilapidated courts in Van Nuys.
Feel free to ask me anything.

Thanks, R398/mooseknuckle. I've posted before that Rune looks like he wears makeup during matches. Perhaps it's sunscreen. Does it look that way in person?
by Anonymous | reply 399 | March 15, 2023 5:11 AM |
R399 I didn't see he was wearing makeup. He just has SUPER smooth skin. I sure hope he wears sunscreen, or he's going to end up looking like Tracy Austin by 30 years old.

OK, Men's Quarters - and to appease our resident whinger (just this once) I'll *try* to keep the nicknames within the bounds of reason
Cam Team or Foe Team?
ADF Team or 'Official Hardcourt Specialist' Medvedev Team?
Il Gingio Team or Daddy Team?
Felix Team or Carlitos Team?
by Anonymous | reply 414 | March 15, 2023 6:43 PM |
The nicknames are getting cringe and giving second-hand embarrassment . Please stop
by Anonymous | reply 415 | March 15, 2023 6:49 PM |
Oh fuck off, R415, they've all been used plenty of times before. Controlling twat.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | March 15, 2023 6:58 PM |
R416 The problem isn't the nicknames as such (though they do exclude casual tennis fans, who'll F&F when they can't make head nor tail of the thread). It's the obsessive, continuous posts about the same thing by one or two people. That's why these threads keep getting shut down.
As a tennis fan, when I log-in to DL and see there's 50 new posts on the tennis thread, I don't want to see 25 posts about "Shapo's leg hair" and 25 posts about "Daddy Fritz". When Muriel sees a thread being spammed by the same couple of people it gets shut down.
Just calm it down a bit.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | March 15, 2023 7:11 PM |
R417, the threads are closed to non-subscribers because Muriel wants to entice the non-subscribers to pay to have the “privilege” to post in popular serial, ongoing threads such as the theater, Ben Barnes and Bradley James threads. The tennis threads are greyed out because the posters would just create a new thread (Part XX) in order to evade the pay restriction. Muriel doesn’t like that sort of evasion.
by Anonymous | reply 418 | March 15, 2023 7:16 PM |
You know what, R417, threads don't revolve exclusively around what 'you want to see'. Yeah, I get irritated at certain posters like the 'Yellow Skin' troll, and I'm not really into Fritz or Shapo, but you know what? Some people are, and I suck it up. I also manage to resist hitting FF on a post when I don't immediately understand it. Jesus Christ some people are controlling little snowflakes.
As for why threads gets closed- see R418. Don;'t just make shit up to suit your narrative.
by Anonymous | reply 419 | March 15, 2023 7:18 PM |

Big Foe played very well and Cam made a LOT of UE. Not sure if it was the wind, or if he was just flat today.
by Anonymous | reply 423 | March 15, 2023 8:57 PM |
It was both. Tiafoe didn't really play lights out either. Foe just made a few more shots on big points and avoided making errors on important points more so than Norrie.

I really don't like Sinner, but the talent is undeniable. He's hitting the snot off the ball. He always seems like he's on the verge but then he runs into an even hotter player or has some out of nowhere mental break.
Battle of the gangly guys.

R448, I do not dislike him because he's a ginger lol. I like Rublev.
It's just one those sports things. I don't like him; I don't root for him (usually). It's not based on anything substantive. He's a great player; he's probably a nice person.

Il Gingio hit the cover off the ball. He's built like a coat-hanger but he moves like a gazelle and cracks the ball like a missile. Great match. Also, Darren Cahill is in the coaching box now ... who took Halep to major titles. The next match v Carlitos should be good.
by Anonymous | reply 468 | March 17, 2023 10:42 AM |
Some of the rallies in the Carlitos/FAA match were mind-blowingly spectacular.
Hopefully this season's shaping up to provide at least 3 players (Medvedev, Carlitos and Sinner) that look to be credible challengers to Novak in terms of both talent and mentality; with another 3 or 4 that could at least challenge on a specifiic day/surface (Rafa, Titsy, FAA, Fritz).
by Anonymous | reply 469 | March 17, 2023 10:50 AM |
A little premature to place Sinner among the very top echelon. His results, like Felix's, are still so up and down so that you never know which Sinner is going to show up on any given day.

Not gonna lie, Alcaraz is moving in to the killer bod territory akin to Rafa. Boy is gettin' buff!
by Anonymous | reply 472 | March 17, 2023 5:08 PM |
I think Carlos is better. Rafa never had a total killer bod when exposed; it just looked great in clothes, but chest wasn't that great when he took his shirt of. I mean it was great compared to 95 percent of the population - but in the context of hot bods we're talking here.

What is going on here? Do we think Ben & Courtney were so thoroughly enjoying the methodical destruction of Coco's forehand at the hands of Muscloryna Sabalenka that they actually disrupted Tiafoe's own match? Or do we think horny Daddy Fritz got lucky at the expanse of everyone's quietness and also probably baby Fritz #2 now being on the way?

Rybakina is also easy to root for. I could so those two and Svee battling it out for the next for years and I'm hear for it.

Il Gingio Team. It's time for him to break through.
by Anonymous | reply 507 | March 18, 2023 10:46 PM |
A Masters title - over a couple of Slam winners no less - would be a level of breakthrough of course, but for Sinner to really breakthrough he has to win a Slam. That's what everyone is hyping him as - a future, multi-Slam champion. And there's someone younger than him (Alcaraz) that has already done it. Plus, guys like Norrie and Fritz have won Masters. It's a big achievement, but it won't feel like Sinner is fulfilling his potential until he wins a Slam.

Strangely, I'm tiring of all the Carlos pandering and hype already, and his career is only beginning!
I mean, I love his tennis, and he's all masc and sexy in that Spanish way that always gets my attention, but somehow Carlos is just a bit too in to himself to my way of thinking. Would prefer to see Med crucify him tomorrow actually. Yet I still am team Carlos to a great degree. Weird huh?

"Why no mixed doubles at Indian Wells?"
Mixed is basically a Slams and Olympics-only event. Now with so many combined events, I guess they could have more mixed doubles but - but maybe there's scheduling issues, or maybe they don't want to put money towards mixed. It's the bastard child of tennis events, so I don't think anyone's really pressing for it to happen.
