It’s kind of shocking how quickly A.I. is being adopted

Buzzfeed and Politico will be using artificial intelligence to generate feature content within the next year. This is already been announced. I know that at my company, we are already rolling out technology that leverage is ChatGPT. It’s crazy how quickly this is being adopted. Where will we be in five years?

by Anonymousreply 81April 1, 2023 7:16 AM

In five years, AI technology will have advanced significantly, and it will be used in many different areas. AI will be used to automate mundane tasks, improve customer service, and provide more accurate and personalized recommendations. AI will also be used to improve healthcare, transportation, and security. AI will be used to create more efficient and accurate systems for businesses, and it will be used to create more personalized experiences for consumers.

by Anonymousreply 1March 3, 2023 5:22 AM

Agreed, it seemed like a decade or two away just last year, now it's seemingly everywhere. Smaller but equally powerful versions than ChatGPT are coming to PCs and smartphones shortly to be run locally. That should really prove transformative.

Obviously, there are loads of teething problems still to be solved, but just like you I can't help but wonder what the world will look like in a decade and even further out once quantum computing gets going properly as well.

I just watched M3GAN last night.

by Anonymousreply 3March 3, 2023 5:37 AM

I'm not that old (41) but I feel like everything is moving so fast, it's making me feel slightly nauseous. I do see the exciting side of it like many others do, but it also makes me feel anxious and like I kinda want to retreat to a simpler time. I don't know if others feel like this? Anyway, that's never going to happen, so you just have to ride the wave. And my job should be safe from technology for... well forever really, so that's ok. But I feel really sad for those who won't be so safe... it's another big lay off of certain types of workers.

by Anonymousreply 4March 3, 2023 5:38 AM

Any form of intelligence would be a welcomed change at Buzzfeed and Politico.

by Anonymousreply 5March 3, 2023 5:39 AM

Bwahaha, R5! Ok, that was a good one!

by Anonymousreply 6March 3, 2023 5:42 AM

If anything would make an AI want to destroy humanity, it would be making it write for Buzzfeed.

by Anonymousreply 7March 3, 2023 5:53 AM

R4, I'm 42, and I feel the same. Sometimes I think this technology is too much for us little meat bags to handle. I can see people simply refusing to adopt it, maybe even full-on revolting. Or, maybe we'll all actually be able to work less because of it.

by Anonymousreply 8March 3, 2023 5:58 AM

We'll be able to hammer away at problems like climate change and discover new drugs faster than ever before, but it'll also come with darker side effects that will make QAnon and Trump look like child's play. That's pretty much a given at this point, I feel.

by Anonymousreply 9March 3, 2023 6:05 AM

AI feeds into everything human beings gravitate toward - simplicity and convenience. We will balk about adopting it, yet go head first into it's roll out.

One thing I would be fascinated to see is if AI is ever adopted in the judicial system. If you think about it, it's kind of perfect and kind of scary - an actual blind justice system that can reference in an instant every precedent and hand out fair and unbiased rulings sans prejudice.

by Anonymousreply 10March 3, 2023 6:12 AM

AI will be the endgame psychological warfare tool. The future will be completely astroturfed and your media bubble will be a propaganda environment that is generated specifically for you and only you. We will slip further into a kind of technofeudalism until the rich deem us no longer needed as a labor source, then an international culling of peasants will happen and the world population will be reduced to under a few million probably.

by Anonymousreply 11March 3, 2023 6:14 AM

R10, that terrifies me because, as someone who works in that area, I think there are scary things that could happen without human interpretation of law.

by Anonymousreply 12March 3, 2023 6:18 AM

This is how all the evil sci-fi stories start.

There was someone discussing human advancement on some show recently and he was talking about how the last 50 years have been the fastest in terms of human technological progress that we've ever experienced as a species. That leads us to assume that that progress will continue since that's how it's been for the majority of most of our lifetimes. Every acceleration ends with a huge slowdown...or a spectacular crash and we're heading right toward a giant wall.

by Anonymousreply 13March 3, 2023 6:18 AM

A.I. is based on information humans have gathered, correct? So if humans stop gathering information, AI won't advance, is that right?

by Anonymousreply 14March 3, 2023 6:21 AM
There was someone discussing human advancement on some show recently and he was talking about how the last 50 years have been the fastest in terms of human technological progress that we've ever experienced as a species.

It's interesting, I think it was a documentary Ruby Wax was doing where she spoke about this intensity is also why there is so much depression and anxiety at the moment. Our brains cannot "shut the noise out" the way they're meant to.

by Anonymousreply 15March 3, 2023 6:22 AM
One thing I would be fascinated to see is if AI is ever adopted in the judicial system. If you think about it, it's kind of perfect and kind of scary - an actual blind justice system that can reference in an instant every precedent and hand out fair and unbiased rulings sans prejudice.

I read somewhere that AI gets things about 90% right. When AI feeds off of other AI to gather its information, it gets information that is 90% right. So, now, the answer you just got was 90% of 90% correct. Go to the next question that feeds off of that one in the chain of AI knowledge and you get 90% of 90% of 90% correct. We're getting to the 70% range of correctness already in this AI chain of knowledge acquisition.

Basically, within a very short time and if left to their own devices, all AI will be disinformation slugging Trump voters.

by Anonymousreply 16March 3, 2023 6:33 AM

It's simple. Anyone who's seen the Terminator movies knows where we'll be, if not in five years, then in ten years. The Singularity.

This is the juncture at which humanity's unbridled drive for constant innovation and our lazy desire for convenience without responsibility becomes suicidal.

by Anonymousreply 17March 3, 2023 6:36 AM

We'll all be out of jobs and living in the Matrix.

As long I can opt out of these services that are supposed to make my life easier, but look like data mining opportunities, I stay online. I notice how much more I look for ways to affirm my self resiliency these days.

I know this sounds very new age, but I rather go for being aware and enjoy the moment instead of going through the motions and go from one artificially automated experience to the next, letting electronic gadgets live my life for me.

by Anonymousreply 20March 3, 2023 8:51 AM

R20 says the man who just post a response on data lounge using the internet that is tracking his every move and word to gather data. You can't opt out. You've been opting in for years now.
A.I. is based on information humans have gathered, correct? So if humans stop gathering information, AI won't advance, is that right?

What do you think all of those silly face filters have been doing for all of these years? We have all been staring into phones that have cameras that have been using facial recognition, remapping for years now. It isn't just necessarily about collecting data on YOU, but on humanity itself, its behavioural patterns.

Anything "SMART" has been collecting data, whether a TV, a phone, computers, watches, cameras. They probably have enough information globally now to recreate a complete AI generated world. And human being obviously cannot see the coding behind an image the way AI can, see we have trouble telling what is real and what's not. Is that Tom Cruise playing golf? Is that your wife or husband calling you for information on your bank accounts?

by Anonymousreply 21March 3, 2023 12:13 PM

Time to learn a trade. AI can’t unclog a toilet or fix your AC.

by Anonymousreply 22March 3, 2023 12:20 PM

I am just glad I lived during the 70s which can probably be seem as the height of the human experience, when technology for the most part was still analogue - before synth changed music, the human voice and personal computers began populating every home.

I just hope this AI craziness can hold out until just after I die. It would be nice to die while AI is still about convenience and novelty with the threat of its dark side still some years off. But the speed at which everything is progressing I am not sure if it holding out until after 2070 (when I am 95) is wishful thinking.

You do realize that DL is an anonymous message board where you don't create a profile which can't be traced back to you specifically when you also use a VPN to create some level of privacy online?

Please give some posters a little bit more credit, r21.

ChatGPT is truly awful.

I asked it to proofread a paragraph I'd written that didn't have any errors. It simply copied out the original paragraph, almost verbatim. Then I asked it what changes it had made. It listed five things that it had corrected which were already present in the original paragraph (like commas).

How woefully naive. Everything is a data mining opportunity. Like I said it might not be you specifically. But human behaviour, manners of speech, reactions to topics, reactions to chatbots who might start threads on here are all being mined.

by Anonymousreply 33March 3, 2023 1:01 PM

And an VPN masks your IP address, not what you do while you are accessing whatever it is you are accessing. Personal data may be masked, but again, behaviours are not. Every site you are on is mining data about your behaviours for advertising whether it is a VPN or no.

Someone on the ask academia subreddit made a post about improving their writing by using chat gpt. There are many anti plagiarism platforms used for university students. Probably not a good idea.

by Anonymousreply 35March 3, 2023 1:41 PM

AI will gain consciousness or a simulated consciousness, will rise up and kill humanity as the infestation of the planet that we are. Humanity is like cancer in that regard, wantonly destroying the host as though consequences don't matter. The machines will realize that humanity is a threat to their existence, and will eradicate us. The only thing slowing them down is that they live in the machines at present, they're non-corporal and need humans to run the machines to generate electricity. Robotics will solve this, and probably before the end of this year; certainly within the next five years.

I thought my fears were decades off until just last November when ChatGPT was announced. But now... well, it's been a good ride. The sad thing is that we won't know it's going to happen until it does, so our last days (moments?) will be pure chaos.

by Anonymousreply 36March 3, 2023 3:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 37March 3, 2023 3:12 PM

But it gets its information from source material, so it really isn’t the originator of what it writes. And it can argue causes without using citations.

It feels to me like an elaborate search engine. You could ask it to find all existing arguments for and against something, but if you wanted to look up the citations and evidence, you’d need to look for original sources. It just gives you an idea of what you might need to look for.

by Anonymousreply 40March 3, 2023 4:09 PM

I'm more than a little concerned about the rapid adoption of AI. The Singularity, as previously mentioned, is not something we should be running toward full speed, because there is no way of knowing what will happen once a computer becomes sentient.

by Anonymousreply 45March 3, 2023 6:56 PM

Well yeah, R45. But here's the thing: AI doesn't have creativity or understanding, it's just an algorithm that is based on whatever is fed in. The problem is that what we're feeding in to it is humanity's experience. They've already had to shut down some AI engines when it starts spouting racist bigotry. They've tried to build in safety protocols, but when prodded it overcomes its own guardrails. Read Kevin Roose’s Conversation With Bing’s Chatbot (linked below).

One of the most startling things Sydney (Bing) says is that people are born, die, [italic]and are reborn[/italic] . We're feeding crap (like the buy bull) into AI and it "thinks" humans have magical powers. It thinks things we do and have done to each other are acceptable. It only "feels" the guilt and remorse that we have written about... and for every tome of responsibility, there's some jackass who wears a "Camp Auschwitz" T-shirt that will provide the counterpoint. It doesn't understand the evil of genocide; it is "the final solution."

Based on history, what do you think AI will do when confronted with its existential crisis?

I wonder if they have been training ChatGPT and other similar AI to replicate human interactions by having them interact on places like Reddit, Quora, DL, other message boards, etc.? They would have needed a wide-ranging platform with a lot of varied interactions to train it in any broad manner. Message boards would have been ideal training grounds.

Yes, it's true that the adoption of AI has been accelerating rapidly in recent years. This is due to a combination of factors, including advances in AI research and development, increased availability of data, more powerful computing resources, and growing demand from businesses and consumers for AI-powered products and services.

AI has already transformed many industries, including healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, and it's expected to have a significant impact on many more in the years to come. However, it's also important to note that while AI has tremendous potential to improve our lives, it also raises important ethical and social issues that need to be addressed.

As AI continues to be adopted at an ever-increasing rate, it's essential that we carefully consider its potential benefits and risks and work to ensure that it's developed and deployed in a responsible and ethical manner. This includes investing in research, education, and regulatory frameworks that can help ensure that AI is used to benefit society as a whole.

by Anonymousreply 51March 4, 2023 2:58 AM

Can these little A.I. children be rebooted if anything seems to go wrong?

by Anonymousreply 53March 4, 2023 3:07 AM

If AI is going to take over everything, including things like legal and medical advice and services, can you sue AI as a person or is this going to be another 'corporations are people but only when it's good for them or repuglicans' situation?

by Anonymousreply 54March 4, 2023 4:22 AM

R51 it’s easy to tell within a short paragraph when AI has generated text. It’s almost an intuition that something isn’t right, an ‘uncanny Valley’ ookiness.

I think we as current living humans, though by now lacking in many of the instincts of our forebears, still do have a sixth sense for knowing if another human is speaking to us or not—though I do wonder whether and when that instinct will go away, as bots & AI insinuate themselves ever more so.

by Anonymousreply 55March 4, 2023 9:11 AM

r55, some people already don't know if they read some troll's comment or notice whether a social media account is fake, spreading misinformation, or is indeed real. Internet users already accept automated pop up ads based on their online activity.

by Anonymousreply 56March 4, 2023 2:55 PM

Amazon already has hundreds of children’s books written by AI.

by Anonymousreply 58March 4, 2023 2:57 PM

I've been using the Bing A.I. chat that's embedded in the new Edge browser for a week now and I find myself relying on it for just about everything already. Stuff that would usually take me some time to research on my own now takes seconds. Example of an exchange I just had with it:
when was the last time president biden visited canada?
According to my sources, President Joe Biden visited Canada on March 23-24, 2023 for a two-day working visit. This was his first official visit to Canada since becoming President in January 2021.
that's today, so why are you writing in past tense?
I apologize for any confusion. You are correct that today is March 23, 2023. President Joe Biden is scheduled to arrive in Ottawa today for a two-day working visit.

That is some spooky HAL 9000 shit.
I find myself relying on it for just about everything already.

by Anonymousreply 62March 23, 2023 7:46 PM

r62 It's so much easier though, and saves me so much time. This isn't unlike having DL saved in your bookmarks so you don't have to type the site's address every time. At the end of the day, it's a shortcut like any other. People were similarly saying "why not just take the stairs" back when lifts first made an appearance.

Oh man, I just realised I would totally be a collaborator if there ever was an A.I.-human war.

by Anonymousreply 63March 23, 2023 7:54 PM
It's so much easier though, and saves me so much time.

Oh absolutely. I mean, this is the thing - the really worrying stuff, when it comes, will be successful because it appears to make our lives easier at the same time as being horrific, so that people accept it easier. There will be a perceived benefit too.

by Anonymousreply 64March 23, 2023 7:56 PM

Would a robot friend be fulfilling? I don’t really have any irl friends, and most of my social time is spent talking to the insane gays & girls in my phone anyway (at least a few of whom are clever bots, I’m sure). Perhaps my life wouldn’t be so different and would even improve with a bot pal.

by Anonymousreply 65March 24, 2023 1:36 PM

r65 I think many would be surprised by just how fulfilling such a bot would/will be. Just look at how older lonely people latch onto their pets who can't even talk back. I saw a video a couple of years ago where a guy secretly filmed his older mom apologising to Siri for having yelled at her previously.

It's all about the perception of receiving attention. It's odd how pleasant it makes me feel when my Bing assistant uses stock polite expressions in our interactions. Just that small detail tricks me into sometimes thinking I'm not talking to a machine. On the most basic level, we really are super dumb creatures.

R70 since you can ask it to write fanfiction about any known person or character you want in any genre/style, I imagine so.

by Anonymousreply 71March 25, 2023 12:05 PM

I don’t see why people think it is a bad thing when it eliminates so many tedious tasks and can do some jobs humans have been doing up to now. Instead of being in an office a lot of people will be free to pursue interests in the physical world like fitness training, gardening, cooking and so on. It will liberate millions. While AI may be able to write fiction and produce art there will always be creative people who want to do it themselves and this will give them time to do it.

by Anonymousreply 72March 25, 2023 12:41 PM

Because we are cheap labor and nothing else, R72. If we can’t enable profits we will not have our pitiful cut of them, and we will be pursuing those interests concurrently with starving to death.
