It’s kind of shocking how quickly A.I. is being adopted

In five years, AI technology will have advanced significantly, and it will be used in many different areas. AI will be used to automate mundane tasks, improve customer service, and provide more accurate and personalized recommendations. AI will also be used to improve healthcare, transportation, and security. AI will be used to create more efficient and accurate systems for businesses, and it will be used to create more personalized experiences for consumers.

Agreed, it seemed like a decade or two away just last year, now it's seemingly everywhere. Smaller but equally powerful versions than ChatGPT are coming to PCs and smartphones shortly to be run locally. That should really prove transformative.

Obviously, there are loads of teething problems still to be solved, but just like you I can't help but wonder what the world will look like in a decade and even further out once quantum computing gets going properly as well.

I just watched M3GAN last night.

I'm not that old (41) but I feel like everything is moving so fast, it's making me feel slightly nauseous. I do see the exciting side of it like many others do, but it also makes me feel anxious and like I kinda want to retreat to a simpler time. I don't know if others feel like this? Anyway, that's never going to happen, so you just have to ride the wave. And my job should be safe from technology for... well forever really, so that's ok. But I feel really sad for those who won't be so safe... it's another big lay off of certain types of workers.

R4, I'm 42, and I feel the same. Sometimes I think this technology is too much for us little meat bags to handle. I can see people simply refusing to adopt it, maybe even full-on revolting. Or, maybe we'll all actually be able to work less because of it.

We'll be able to hammer away at problems like climate change and discover new drugs faster than ever before, but it'll also come with darker side effects that will make QAnon and Trump look like child's play. That's pretty much a given at this point, I feel.

AI feeds into everything human beings gravitate toward - simplicity and convenience. We will balk about adopting it, yet go head first into it's roll out.

One thing I would be fascinated to see is if AI is ever adopted in the judicial system. If you think about it, it's kind of perfect and kind of scary - an actual blind justice system that can reference in an instant every precedent and hand out fair and unbiased rulings sans prejudice.

AI will be the endgame psychological warfare tool. The future will be completely astroturfed and your media bubble will be a propaganda environment that is generated specifically for you and only you. We will slip further into a kind of technofeudalism until the rich deem us no longer needed as a labor source, then an international culling of peasants will happen and the world population will be reduced to under a few million probably.

R10, that terrifies me because, as someone who works in that area, I think there are scary things that could happen without human interpretation of law.

There was someone discussing human advancement on some show recently and he was talking about how the last 50 years have been the fastest in terms of human technological progress that we've ever experienced as a species. That leads us to assume that that progress will continue since that's how it's been for the majority of most of our lifetimes. Every acceleration ends with a huge slowdown...or a spectacular crash and we're heading right toward a giant wall.

I read somewhere that AI gets things about 90% right. When AI feeds off of other AI to gather its information, it gets information that is 90% right. So, now, the answer you just got was 90% of 90% correct. Go to the next question that feeds off of that one in the chain of AI knowledge and you get 90% of 90% of 90% correct. We're getting to the 70% range of correctness already in this AI chain of knowledge acquisition.

Basically, within a very short time and if left to their own devices, all AI will be disinformation slugging Trump voters.

As long I can opt out of these services that are supposed to make my life easier, but look like data mining opportunities, I stay online. I notice how much more I look for ways to affirm my self resiliency these days.

I know this sounds very new age, but I rather go for being aware and enjoy the moment instead of going through the motions and go from one artificially automated experience to the next, letting electronic gadgets live my life for me.

What do you think all of those silly face filters have been doing for all of these years? We have all been staring into phones that have cameras that have been using facial recognition, remapping for years now. It isn't just necessarily about collecting data on YOU, but on humanity itself, its behavioural patterns.

Anything "SMART" has been collecting data, whether a TV, a phone, computers, watches, cameras. They probably have enough information globally now to recreate a complete AI generated world. And human being obviously cannot see the coding behind an image the way AI can, see we have trouble telling what is real and what's not. Is that Tom Cruise playing golf? Is that your wife or husband calling you for information on your bank accounts?

Time to learn a trade. AI can’t unclog a toilet or fix your AC.

I am just glad I lived during the 70s which can probably be seem as the height of the human experience, when technology for the most part was still analogue - before synth changed music, the human voice and personal computers began populating every home.

I just hope this AI craziness can hold out until just after I die. It would be nice to die while AI is still about convenience and novelty with the threat of its dark side still some years off. But the speed at which everything is progressing I am not sure if it holding out until after 2070 (when I am 95) is wishful thinking.

Most chatbots offer offer everything but what I need. I have better luck on the phone with voice recognition with banks and airlines, but online “text” with virtual assistants feels way less precise.

I asked it to proofread a paragraph I'd written that didn't have any errors. It simply copied out the original paragraph, almost verbatim. Then I asked it what changes it had made. It listed five things that it had corrected which were already present in the original paragraph (like commas).

And an VPN masks your IP address, not what you do while you are accessing whatever it is you are accessing. Personal data may be masked, but again, behaviours are not. Every site you are on is mining data about your behaviours for advertising whether it is a VPN or no.

Someone on the ask academia subreddit made a post about improving their writing by using chat gpt. There are many anti plagiarism platforms used for university students. Probably not a good idea.

AI will gain consciousness or a simulated consciousness, will rise up and kill humanity as the infestation of the planet that we are. Humanity is like cancer in that regard, wantonly destroying the host as though consequences don't matter. The machines will realize that humanity is a threat to their existence, and will eradicate us. The only thing slowing them down is that they live in the machines at present, they're non-corporal and need humans to run the machines to generate electricity. Robotics will solve this, and probably before the end of this year; certainly within the next five years.

I thought my fears were decades off until just last November when ChatGPT was announced. But now... well, it's been a good ride. The sad thing is that we won't know it's going to happen until it does, so our last days (moments?) will be pure chaos.

It feels to me like an elaborate search engine. You could ask it to find all existing arguments for and against something, but if you wanted to look up the citations and evidence, you’d need to look for original sources. It just gives you an idea of what you might need to look for.

I'm more than a little concerned about the rapid adoption of AI. The Singularity, as previously mentioned, is not something we should be running toward full speed, because there is no way of knowing what will happen once a computer becomes sentient.

Well yeah, R45. But here's the thing: AI doesn't have creativity or understanding, it's just an algorithm that is based on whatever is fed in. The problem is that what we're feeding in to it is humanity's experience. They've already had to shut down some AI engines when it starts spouting racist bigotry. I wonder if they have been training ChatGPT and other similar AI to replicate human interactions by having them interact on places like Reddit, Quora, DL, other message boards, etc.? I've been using the Bing A.I. chat that's embedded in the new Edge browser for a week now and I find myself relying on it for just about everything already. Stuff that would usually take me some time to research on my own now takes seconds. Example of an exchange I just had with it:

It's all about the perception of receiving attention. It's odd how pleasant it makes me feel when my Bing assistant uses stock polite expressions in our interactions. Just that small detail tricks me into sometimes thinking I'm not talking to a machine. On the most basic level, we really are super dumb creatures.

I don’t see why people think it is a bad thing when it eliminates so many tedious tasks and can do some jobs humans have been doing up to now. Instead of being in an office a lot of people will be free to pursue interests in the physical world like fitness training, gardening, cooking and so on. It will liberate millions. While AI may be able to write fiction and produce art there will always be creative people who want to do it themselves and this will give them time to do it.
