Who are actresses you'd say most people would agree are (or were) exceedingly beautiful and/or sexy? Two that come to mind for me are Raquel Welch and Sophia Loren.

Gene Tierney. So stunningly gorgeous with such a tragic life. She played such an wicked bitch in Leave Her To Heaven yet one couldn't stop looking at her.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 2, 2023 11:43 PM |
OP uses Sophia Loren as an example of stunning beauty, when in early auditions she couldn’t get work because she wasn’t pretty enough. She’s voluptuous and sensual, not beautiful.
She is a very frank woman, and agreed herself. She said “I was not beautiful in the sense, like, a doll. I've never been like that.”
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 2, 2023 11:47 PM |
Yes, Sophia, Elizabeth Taylor, Vivian Leigh, Grace Kelly, Julie Christie, Garbo, Heddy Lamar, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, yes Cruz, Jessica Lange, Catherine Denueve. Big stars of film only on my list- not TV actresses.

Sadly there weren't many black actresses during that "glamorous" era of Hollywood. There are quite a few today who I would consider beautiful, but like most current actresses there are none that many would consider to be drop-dead gorgeous.

Most leading ladies are made to look stunning through an entire team of professionals that are well paid to achieve that. They start out naturally appealing, but that star quality perfection is clinically achieved.
A more contemporary actress I thought looked utterly ravishing was Liv Tyler in STEALING BEAUTY. Just stunning. Really.

Halle Berry is very basic looking to me as well but at least she actually qualifies as pretty. Angelina Jolie was a go-to “most beautiful” for years and it stumped me completely. She looked freakish and worked over heavily, not exotic or unique.
Monica Bellucci is a modern stunner.

Ava Gardner was lovely. She was naturally sensual with her beautiful self.
She was discovered just by her picture. It was placed in a photo shop window or something like that and someone from a major studio was gobsmacked by her beauty. They found out her contact information and just signed her on the spot to a contract.

EVERY star actress in Hollywood received a makeover of some sort including the dead bitches on this list. Weight loss, hair dye, a nose job, a name change, whatever, it's all the same. Hollywood is selling idealized beauty not down by the river reality. What matters most is the end result captured on film. Without time and lots of money to help maintain it, we're ALL uglier and fatter than what we see on screen.

by Anonymous | reply 98 | March 3, 2023 4:18 AM |
R82 is dumb. Halle Berry's whole career was built on her insane beauty which gave her global appeal. The variety of guys she's fucked are proof of that. There had been other black beauties before her, but when Halle Berry came on the scene, many white people didn't even think black women could be THAT level of beautiful. She changed the game. It was all people could talk about when discussing her. It's why she pushed for grittier indie movies and did racier stuff to prove she was more than a gorgeous face. Even with no makeup, it didn't really work as the Monster's Ball sex scene gave people fap material for decades.

Re Jennifer Connolly
[quote] They were implants. She has talked about it and had them removed,
Where's the link? I have read considerable material about her and seen plenty of interviews. She never talked about it because she never had implants. You could see her breasts were real - if you know what real female breasts look like.
She lost a great deal of weight after she had her first child when she was about 25 or 26. Weight loss shrinks your breasts but the skin can't go back to being what they were before hence they sag. You really need lift bras. Plus nursing really changes the shape of your breasts. More sagging.

I don’t care about plastic surgery — as long as we all concur that the work is undetectable to the layperson. So many have had it, it’s baked into our culture forever anyway so we will never find “natural beauties” anymore.
For current stars, I agree on Zendaya. I tend to like finer bone structure (think Pfieffer or Theron), not sure why I have that preference other than I look like that too (mostly Eastern European, I look like a brunette Polish person because that’s what I am).
For other modern actors, I do indeed struggle with picks. I don’t like the current crop of women they’re trying to turn into stars.
For vintage beauties, Ava Gardner reigns. Notice we haven’t had many votes for Marilyn, that’s just interesting to me. Notice too that we refuse to pick any women who are more “dirty” or “impure”. Why not Pam Anderson? Why not Anna Nicole Smith? I wouldn’t actually pick those two myself, but it is just an interesting pattern to note.
Before the tragedy, Lara Flynn Boyle was up there. J-Lo maybe? I’m super happy no one named a Kardashian, though Kendall has near perfection in her proportions, elegance, and grace, but hell no on one of them, it’s a bridge too far.
For 80’s, maybe Diane Lane, Jessica Lange. For post-modern, perhaps Naomi Watts. I would also include Sophie Marceau and Vera Farmiga. I could never ever include Asia first on principle, second on her huge beak.
It’s Zendaya x’s a million.
Link is Sophie…

Agree, R192. Akin to Kendall Jenner, she radiates “pathology”. Do think there are “issues” behind the scenes with these two. Know that Zendaya was mixed up early on with Harvey Weinstein, but there’s more to it than this fact.

Audrey Hepburn was far from "stunningly gorgeous." I like her looks (at least when young, when older, she looks haggard), but she was more striking at times and cute at other times.

Madeleine Carroll was really beautiful but is mostly forgotten. She was in a couple of Hitchcock's films. Virginia Bruce was often called the most beautiful woman on the screen, but her type of looks aren't as popular now. Lili Palmer was beautiful - and Kay Kendall (both wives of Rex Harrison). Elizabeth Allan and Maureen O'Sullivan were beautiful as ingenues in those old MGM movies - Madge Evans, as well.

Connelly’s tits were not implants, you stupid queens. You can tell because she lost all the fat on her body including her tits when she went anorexic. Fake tits do not look like this, ScarJo was the one with the implants she got removed.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | March 17, 2023 2:44 PM |
R98 She has never, ever talked about breast implants or getting them “removed”. Her PR person had to say she didn’t have a breast reduction, but she herself has never talked about her body except when she used to lament her (NATURAL) curves and how it made her feel insecure.
Do you all think women can’t have naturally big tits? First, the Helen Mirren and Sydney Sweeney fake tits comments and now this. Fake tits are shaped a certain way and hang a certain way where you can tell they’re fake. Connelly’s were real.

Isabella Rossellini was gorgeous in Cousins with Ted Danson as well as Death Becomes Her.
by Anonymous | reply 254 | March 17, 2023 5:15 PM |
Rossellini’s COUSINS costar Sean Young had a period where she was cast on her looks alone, even though she couldn’t act very well. And that was fine till Hollywood caught on that she was, unfortunately, bonkers.
She has no filter and is out of touch. There was some profile on her doing a low budget horror film a few years ago, and quietly watching the rushes she admitted to the director, “Well, it is hard to see yourself photographed this way when you were the most beautiful woman in the world.”
1.) I admire her looks, but Sean Young was not the most beautiful woman in the world, and 2.) Even the most beautiful (sane) woman in the world would never say that about herself! Jebus.

Jesus Christ, poor Marlene. Don't you guys know she was in uniform because she "went on two USO tours during World War II, traveling first to North Africa and Italy, where she was the first entertainer to reach rescued Allied soldiers in Anzio, and then later to France and Germany, with this second tour lasting 11 months, beginning just on the heels of D-Day"? This was a woman in her mid-40s, not a spring chicken. What do you think she was going to look like after all that? She did amazing work during WWII and all of it completely voluntary so cut the kraut some slack.
by Anonymous | reply 273 | March 19, 2023 3:46 AM |
I thought she looked fine during her USO tours. I thought she looked fine sans fard. She was Marlene, so charismatic. Marlene would scrub her dressing room floors, clean her lodgings on film shoots, etc. She was a handsome German woman. She was a MASTER of illusions on stage and screen. I also think she was a very good actress and, shoot me, a competent evocative singer. She could BECOME one of the most beautiful women when she felt like it. That's enough.
Another one who quickly mastered the illusion of beauty was Madonna. Also a charismatic, pretty girl, not a great beauty. Pity she jumped the shark in her 50s, Madonna.
by Anonymous | reply 275 | March 19, 2023 4:04 AM |
"Dietrich's greatest efforts were for the USO. In 1944 and 1945 she volunteered for multiple tours, entertaining as many as half a million troops and prisoners of war in Algeria, Italy, France, and Germany for eighteen straight months. She earned a reputation for abiding the rough conditions – a lack of electricity, sleeping in tents – and for being willing to tour near enemy lines."

by Anonymous | reply 282 | March 19, 2023 7:14 PM |
Joan Crawford, without the studio makeup, styling, and carefully orchestrated lighting, was quite unremarkable looks-wise. She had big eyes, low cheekbones, and wide jawline. But with those back molars removed, Max Factor makeup, studio lighting, and sumptuous glamour girl wardrobe, she transformed into a goddess. She was at her beauty peak in those 1930s MGM pairings with Clark Gable, and the numerous Hurrell photos shot to promote them.
by Anonymous | reply 283 | March 19, 2023 9:27 PM |
What's really weird is that I notice Crawford had big, googly eyes when she was very young. I don't notice that in her later movies. I wonder if they had some kind of eyelid plastic surgery back in the 1920s and 1930s to make her look more attractive.

This is true of most of those Golden Age stars. Hedda Hopper (?) once wrote that Arlene Dahl and Elizabeth Taylor were the only 2 actresses that lost nothing by going around without makeup.
Almost all the rest were pretty women who had the rare, VALUABLE quirk of being extremely photogenic. That’s what screen tests are for - some people just naturally photograph well while other perfectly good looking people do not.
For instance, Veronica Lake was naturally lovely, but she didn’t have this impact in person:

R290 What was the original point? The "she looks somewhat crappy" in The Women even though she's supposed to be playing a "big deal femme fatale." I don't agree she looks crappy, but anyway, the point is she isn't playing Mata Hari or a big-time sexy seductress, just a chick who works in a department store and is looking to climb the social/money ladder using what wiles she's got. If she was a big-time femme fatale she wouldn't be a working as a clerk in a department store. The only thing sympathetic about Crystal is that she has nothing, vs the rich society cows who did nothing to earn theirs, and she's something of a straight shooter.

That's because of the sexism of the time. Women weren't allowed to be the presidents of major companies, no matter how smart and hard working they were. Decades later, it's still not a level playing field when it comes to women getting jobs at the top of the corporate ladder.
Not all society women had an easy time. Brooke Astor's rich husband had chronic depression and was not easy to live with.

I guess I get your point, but Crystal in The Women was not ambitious to be in business. She was a gold digger who was looking for the easy life by marrying a rich guy like Stephen Haines, then having a lover on the side like Buck Winston. It wasn't because of the economics of the time but because of who she was. There are women like that today as well.
