IBS sufferers

Any other IBS sufferers here?

(I know, not one of our usual topics. Just suffering in hell and looking for advice/suggestion)

by Anonymousreply 89October 30, 2024 11:58 AM

Have you tried taking colostrum? California Gold has an affordable powder you can mix into water/juice in the morning. It is an amazing gut-healer.

by Anonymousreply 1March 1, 2023 4:10 PM

Not myself, but hubby suffers. He's found that avoiding some specific foods (broccoli, cauliflower) really helps.

Google fodmap, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2March 1, 2023 4:10 PM

Oh, poop.

by Anonymousreply 3March 5, 2023 10:09 PM

IBS-C or IBS-D, OP?

by Anonymousreply 4March 5, 2023 10:20 PM

Love this guy. He's a sweetie with and Instagram account with diet tips form bottoms and people with IBS.

Not OP, but I have horrible IBS-D. I have tried every fucking thing. Food is starting to scare me. Mary!

by Anonymousreply 6March 5, 2023 10:24 PM

R5 I’ll be sure to avoid that

by Anonymousreply 7March 5, 2023 10:27 PM

^ have you tried Amitriptyline?

by Anonymousreply 8March 5, 2023 10:29 PM

Who are replying to r8?

by Anonymousreply 9March 5, 2023 10:35 PM

No OP, I eat lettuce every day as well as an orange. Try it.

by Anonymousreply 10March 5, 2023 10:39 PM

I have IBS. It's horrible. I'm in a lot of pain. No, it won't kill me, but it's still awful. I can't believe I have to live with it.

by Anonymousreply 11August 23, 2024 6:49 AM

Crohn’s Disease. Slippery Elm powder or capsules helps a lot. I prefer capsules.

by Anonymousreply 12August 23, 2024 6:59 AM

Yes, I do. In fact, that's why I'm awake at almost 2am.

Mine is very much affected by my nerves. I don't really have any advice, OP. Except to get a bidet attachment for the toilet.

by Anonymousreply 13August 23, 2024 7:00 AM

Any of you sufferers ever tried sitting on a glass table in a softly lit room with smooth R & B music gently playing in the background? If not, I highly recommend it and am happy to let you try it for yourselves.

by Anonymousreply 14August 23, 2024 7:36 AM

So you make doo doos often? Gastritis of the bowels with doo doos included.

by Anonymousreply 15August 23, 2024 7:50 AM

Well, shit. What a load of crap.

I take dicyclomine which works very well.

by Anonymousreply 18August 23, 2024 11:29 AM

R2 I have tried a low fodmap diet. Didn't help me at all.

by Anonymousreply 19August 25, 2024 8:38 AM

R4 I have C. It's horrible.

by Anonymousreply 20August 25, 2024 8:39 AM

R13 Same. If I am stressed it gets even worse..

by Anonymousreply 21August 25, 2024 8:40 AM

R18 I take a pill every morning. It helps.

by Anonymousreply 22August 25, 2024 8:41 AM

I have the constipation type. I have to take Laxido or my bowel seizes up. I still get bad spasms sometimes despite following a careful FODMAP diet.

by Anonymousreply 23August 25, 2024 10:15 AM

R22 Do you suffer from gassy bowel syndrome?

by Anonymousreply 24August 26, 2024 11:08 AM

EBS= Erna bowel syndrome.

by Anonymousreply 25August 26, 2024 2:11 PM

Try an elimination diet to find trigger foods.

Most common food allergies/sensitivities:

Egg, Dairy, Wheat, Corn, Soy, Nuts, Sesame (note: hummus has sesame tahini)

by Anonymousreply 26August 26, 2024 2:39 PM

I made a HUGE doo doo this morning. It stunk to high heaven. I didn’t measure it but it must have been 16 inches long. Plugged up the shitter. Made the maid clean up the mess.

by Anonymousreply 27August 26, 2024 9:00 PM

I ran into an ex co-worker at the grocery store, she retired and visited some healthy eating camp. After suffering her entire life from IBS she gave up gluten and sugar and had no further problems. I wanted to smack her because she followed me through the store talking about her bowels and diet, I finally said "That's great Linda but you're grossing me out". She's an architect, they sometimes seem like accountants.

by Anonymousreply 28August 26, 2024 9:13 PM

Ginny in billing has the IBS shits.

by Anonymousreply 29August 26, 2024 10:53 PM

Me.

I have about 10 to 12 things I can eat without being miserable. I only eat solids once a day.

by Anonymousreply 30August 26, 2024 10:56 PM

Things down there changed after my last colonscopy (a year ago). I know the prep is said to completely wipe out your preexisting intestinal flora, but mine has never returned to what it was before. However, although I rarely have formed stools such as I would have had earlier in my life, on most days I'm only in the bathroom 2 or 3 times a day. I do find that a high fiber diet is helpful, chewing thoroughly is always a good idea, and if things seem worse than usual, I take a course of sacchoromyces boulardii, which is the base ingredient for many "probiotic" over-the-counter products such as florastor. I also eat yogurt and kimchee fairly regularly. They say that a healthy gut biome is crucial for good immunity, so I'm trying to do what I can. Good luck everyone who is suffering!

by Anonymousreply 31August 27, 2024 1:04 AM

I have IBS-C. I have extreme stomach pains, extreme amount of gas and extreme constipation. I take a pill every morning. I could go two weeks without going to the toilet. It was that bad. Now I'm able to sh*t every day. It also helps with the pains and gas.

by Anonymousreply 32September 25, 2024 1:46 PM

R28 Good for her. I tried a gluten-free diet. No difference. I tried a low fodmap diet. No difference. Diets didn't help me at all. Only meds helped me. Now I eat what I want. I take meds so I'm able to sh*t.

by Anonymousreply 33September 25, 2024 1:49 PM

I have colitis and have found when you’re flaring every food bothers you. When you’re not flaring, nothing bothers you. See a GI MD and get on medication - for any GI issue.

by Anonymousreply 34September 25, 2024 1:51 PM

I had IBS for years. I figured out through trial and error that it was triggered by raw vegetables, lettuce (salads) and raw fruit. Once I eliminated those foods from my diet, I have been fine. Now I eat steamed veggies, and canned fruit. Lettuce salads are the worst, but I can eat cooked spinach.

by Anonymousreply 35September 25, 2024 1:52 PM

My favorite commercials were for IBS-D, Viberzi with Lana something, until they were taken off the internet due to a class action pancreatitis lawsuit.

by Anonymousreply 36September 25, 2024 1:58 PM

R35 Good for you. Like I said: diets didn't help me at all. I was in extreme pain no matter what I ate. But yes. I did figure out some foods bothered me more than others. Of course what is good for me made me gassy, mostly fiber, like fruit and vegetables and wholebread. Onion too. But it was mostly the gas issue. Eliminating food items helped zero on my stomach pain, same with my constipation. The only thing that helped were meds.

by Anonymousreply 37September 25, 2024 1:58 PM

June Allyson!

You know, they offered me that Depends commercial. Lot of money, too. Just one little problem... I don't shit my pants!

by Anonymousreply 38September 25, 2024 2:05 PM

Take Metamucil (the powder). You’ll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 39September 25, 2024 2:09 PM

If it was as simple as Metamucil every day, there would no longer be such a thing as IBS. The world would be a happier place.

Unless you have it, you'll never understand it.

by Anonymousreply 40September 25, 2024 2:17 PM

I’ve been diagnosed with gastroparesis. My bowel movements have changed from once in the morning to every other day.

I’m bloated and wondering if an enema or laxatives might help.

by Anonymousreply 41September 25, 2024 3:45 PM

R41

Try Miralax. It works but it can also upset the stomach while it's working. Start with slightly smaller amounts than what is recommended (a full capful.)

Also, believe it or not, walking helps. Use the treadmill or a walk around the neighborhood every day.

by Anonymousreply 42September 25, 2024 4:05 PM

R41

Before you try the Miralax, ask your (gastro) doctor about using it.

by Anonymousreply 43September 25, 2024 4:07 PM

I have restless leg syndrome

by Anonymousreply 44September 25, 2024 4:27 PM

I take metamucil religiously (the powder, sugar free version). It's solved all my problems back there. If I miss a day I feel it.

by Anonymousreply 45September 25, 2024 4:38 PM

I had something called Movicol. No effect.

by Anonymousreply 46September 25, 2024 4:47 PM

R40 Exactly!

by Anonymousreply 47September 25, 2024 4:48 PM

[quote]I have IBS-C. I have extreme stomach pains, extreme amount of gas and extreme constipation. I take a pill every morning. I could go two weeks without going to the toilet. It was that bad. Now I'm able to sh*t every day. It also helps with the pains and gas.

I have IBS-C too. My symptoms are very similar to yours, especially the intermittent prolonged constipation, which I thankfully experience fewer bouts of now. I've tried many laxatives and even the ones that advertise as 'gentle' cause stomach cramps and discomfort. It's a trial and error situation for me when it comes to eating certain foods and cutting out the problem ones, which makes it much more manageable. Most days, its just a nuisance, but the flare-ups can be pretty bad.

The worst case scenario for me is no bowel movement for a week or so accompanied by bloating and gas, that ends with extreme stomach cramps for several hours, concluding with diarrhea spell. I often get severely nauseated too and have a lifelong fear of vomiting, so if I feel like it is going to happen or on the rare occasion when it does, I pretty much have a full blown panic attack on top of everything else. Its absolutely miserable.

I know many have IBS, but at times, it can feel like no one understands how stressful it can be to deal with. That's why I can appreciate the comments posted here a little more than someone who isn't an IBS sufferer.

by Anonymousreply 48September 25, 2024 6:56 PM

I use senna "softgels" every day. If it's a WFH day, I can take it in the morning & use my own bathroom. If it's an office day, I'll take the senna at night.

Anyway, there are a few things that constipate me:

1. White rice.

2. White bread (like the kind in banh mi). I actually think my local banh mi place uses rice flour.

3. Shellfish.

I don't really eat beef, pork or chicken, but those things would probably constipate me.

I do eat a fair amount of cheese, but usually with beans and/or vegetables.

by Anonymousreply 49September 25, 2024 7:09 PM

R49, senna in any form is a stimulant laxative. It's addictive.

by Anonymousreply 50September 25, 2024 7:20 PM

r41, have you tried OMAD or intermittent fasting to give your innards a rest before food batches?

by Anonymousreply 51September 25, 2024 9:02 PM

[Quote]I often get severely nauseated too and have a lifelong fear of vomiting, so if I feel like it is going to happen or on the rare occasion when it does, I pretty much have a full blown panic attack on top of everything else. Its absolutely miserable.

Literally this. I'm often nauseous too. I have a subscription medication for it though.

by Anonymousreply 52September 25, 2024 9:27 PM

R48 I also forgot to say that I had to stop eating junkfood. It literally made me sick and I would throw up. I have completely stopped eating chocolate, potato chips (crisps) and I even stopped drinking soda (coke), as it would make me sick. I eat the occasional hamburger or pizza, but other than that I just eat normal food, bread and dinner, like chicken and fish. That helps. I'm usually not nauseous, but even now I can feel sick sometimes, but far less often. I lost a lot of weight though. This disease is horrible. It's awful. I have it so bad that I might have to stop working at some point.

by Anonymousreply 53September 25, 2024 9:46 PM

Trulance has been effective for my IBS-C but it requires that I stay close to the bathroom for 4 to 5 hours after taking it. I have not been able to take it daily because I work in an office.

by Anonymousreply 54September 25, 2024 10:06 PM

Keep on looking for answers and solutions. The clues don't always come easy. I had IBS attacks twice right before family gatherings on Sundays this year, so I thought that the stress of going (It's a complicated family and I have some social anxiety) was a trigger. But after having an attack after eating a greasy hamburger, I realized: I sometimes eat like that on Saturdays, so now I'm thinking high-fat foods set me off, not stress.

by Anonymousreply 55September 26, 2024 4:52 AM

I made 17 doo doos today. I counted them.

by Anonymousreply 56September 26, 2024 7:29 AM

And the DL Gold Medal for Most Shits in one day, while not ill or on laxatives....goes to R56.

by Anonymousreply 57September 26, 2024 9:30 PM

Thanks, R52/R53. I've dealt with it most of my life and it is truly awful. I've adjusted my eating habits and the bad spells aren't as frequent as in the past, but anything I eat even if I feel perfectly fine, I still think, "Will it sit right or not?" For the nausea, I've been prescribed medication to lessen the anxiety during one of those episodes. The panic attacks I have are so bad that they can make the nausea worse and cause me to vomit, which I fear the most. The whole thing can trigger depression as well. You just get worn out at times from all of it. But you have to keep going, learn what works and doesn't, and go on.

by Anonymousreply 58September 26, 2024 10:09 PM

Alternate-day-fasting for a few months (with a couple of longer, 2-3 day water fasts thrown in) cured mine, OP. if you go to the fasting subreddit, you'll find scores of people who have done the same or sent their Crohn's into remission with some form or another of water fasting. It's incredibly healing for the gut.

by Anonymousreply 59September 26, 2024 10:25 PM

I have D. I’ve been on Oh-oh-oh-Ozempic for a year and it’s helped slow that shit down. Literally.

by Anonymousreply 60September 26, 2024 10:30 PM

I've had C all my life and it's agony.

by Anonymousreply 61September 27, 2024 12:09 AM

That's because he's lying, R57.

by Anonymousreply 62September 27, 2024 12:31 AM

I had diarrhea in the car the other day. It wasn’t pretty. My co-workers weren’t pleased.

by Anonymousreply 63September 27, 2024 1:29 AM

Nice try, children. You apparently find yourselves hysterically funny. You're not. At all.

Move along.

by Anonymousreply 64September 27, 2024 12:29 PM

R58 Yup. I have been depressed and struggled with anxiety half my life. I'm convinced it triggered my IBS. I am severly depressed and I am constantly stressed. The anxiety is the worst. I can't sleep. I am exhausted. All the symptoms, stomach pain, gas, constipation, nausea.... it makes me exhausted. I can get gas and struggle with it all night long. It's painful. Meds for gas are no help. I have tried. I just have to let it pass. Everyone says "change your diet". I have tried that, it's of no help to me. I am also told I need to stress less, but it's easier said than done. I suffer from extreme anxiety and depression. I cannot just turn off my thoughts. I know my bad psychological state is triggering my IBS, but it's impossible to do anything about it. I am not happy. I will never be happy. I hate my life. I hate my job. How can I change this?! It's not easy. My psychological state is impossible to fix. That's why I need meds. I have found meds that help against my stomach pain, the gas and the constipation. It helps, but it's not a cure. I still have all of those symptoms even now, because it flares up sometimes, but it's better than it was. What sucks is the side effects from the meds, like dizzy spells and nausea. Ugh. I'm praying they might find a cure one day because my life is hell. As I said: i'm so badly affected by it that I might have to stop working and live off the state for the rest of my life. It fucking sucks.

by Anonymousreply 65September 27, 2024 2:48 PM

Always remember: Don't Push. Don't Strain.

You can end up with a hernia or two, as I did. That's bad enough, but the scar tissue from the corrective surgery aches forever. And every slight strain afterwards feels like the hernia is going to rip open again.

I would have appreciated it if my GP or Gastro had mentioned the probability of that happening.

by Anonymousreply 66September 27, 2024 2:57 PM

R65, know that depression is a liar that will tell you narratives that are not true. Many people with depression think they have a hopeless case, but that's their depression talking. The reality is that many of such patients do indeed respond to treatment. I hope you can find treatment for your depression and anxiety that works for you.

by Anonymousreply 67September 27, 2024 8:34 PM

R65 It is very hard and all consuming at times. The worst time for me is after one of the 'bad' spells when you know what you've just gone through once again and feel as if there is no way out. One of the aspects of depression I hate is the self-hatred that sometimes creeps in, like what R67 describes. There are times when getting out of the bed and doing my daily routine seems to be too much. Medication helps, especially for the anxiety, but like you said, the side effects are bothersome. I tire easily, sometimes feel weak and have to take breaks at different times, but if the right pill or combination of pills lessens some of the symptoms in any way, I try to adapt. Knowing there are others who understand what IBS really is and that you aren't alone in dealing with it helps too.

by Anonymousreply 68September 27, 2024 9:58 PM

Count your doo doos! 5 big ones a day is the goal. Not 4. Not 6. 5. 5 doo doos. Smooth sailing from then on!!!

by Anonymousreply 69September 27, 2024 11:18 PM

I'm disgusted how little the specialists seem to know about causes. They all offer symptom relief but it doesn't last.

by Anonymousreply 70September 28, 2024 12:28 AM

Woke up at 4 am feeling very nauseous. Turns out I have diahrrea. This is new to me. I'm always constipated. I was constipated yesterday. Wondering if that's why. Or maybe my IBS is turning into shifting d/c. Or it's a side effect of the anti-depressants I'm on. It might be the latter.

by Anonymousreply 71October 30, 2024 5:02 AM

R70 I can relate. Here in Norway doctors just basically say "it's not that serious. You won't die from it. Get a grip." Even specialists are just saying it's a chronic disease and there's no cure, we just have to live with it by dealing with the symptoms, like take meds for stomach pain and nausea, handle stress etc. It's easier said than done though.

by Anonymousreply 72October 30, 2024 5:05 AM

Metamucil, the powder in water. You’ll thank me later.

by Anonymousreply 73October 30, 2024 5:11 AM

R73 I use something called Movicol. I assume it's something similar. But it makes me nauseous (everything does tbh). Thankfully I haven't needed to use it lately.

by Anonymousreply 74October 30, 2024 5:16 AM

OP, imodium. Over the counter.

by Anonymousreply 75October 30, 2024 5:25 AM

R74, Metamucil. Get it.

by Anonymousreply 76October 30, 2024 5:27 AM

I was in the hospital for a week earlier this year, and had constipation. I just couldn't go despite wolfing down food. They finally gave me Miralax and Collace which did the trick; they said you can't go home until you have a bowel movement! And I had to show the Nurse - I'm 63 and felt like a 10 year old. The constipation reoccurred because of the meds they had me on, and I ended up in the ER and got an enema which was incredible relief, but yes gross. Literally sitting on a kiddie type potty and being told to 'hold it in' until they had all the fluid up me. I work from home and have changed my diet to lots of berries, chicken, greens, trying to avoid fast foods that cause the problem to re-occur. My sister in law, a Nurse, says I'm bowel obsessed. No need to go every day - she told me if she poops it is maybe 3 times a week! She weighs about 105lbs.

by Anonymousreply 77October 30, 2024 5:28 AM

I eat vegetables and fruit every day and all is normal. I stopped eating meat except for occasional roast beef and my stomach is happy.

by Anonymousreply 78October 30, 2024 5:34 AM

R76 It's not avilable here in Norway. We only have Movicol.

by Anonymousreply 79October 30, 2024 5:35 AM

R78 I don't even eat that much meat. A few times a week but hardly every day.

by Anonymousreply 80October 30, 2024 5:37 AM

R77 Eating too much fiber can also make you constipated. If you have been eatin junk food for a while, only eating fiber-rich food can be a shock to the system and make you constipated. You need to introduce fruit and vegetables slowly. I learned the hard way.

by Anonymousreply 81October 30, 2024 5:39 AM

R77 I had to get an enema earlier this year as I was so constipated nothing worked. That did the trick though.

by Anonymousreply 82October 30, 2024 5:41 AM

I hear ya. I had to show the nurse my doo doos before flushing. See nurse, I did make doo doos.

by Anonymousreply 83October 30, 2024 7:00 AM

[quote] I'm 63[.] I ... have changed my diet ... trying to avoid fast foods that cause the problem to re-occur. My sister in law, a Nurse, says I'm bowel obsessed. No need to go every day - she told me if she poops it is maybe 3 times a week!

At 63, you shouldn't be eating fast food. Maybe once every two months, at most.

IDGAF if your sister is a nurse (RN? LPN?), you should be going every day.

Sis sounds constipated and is trying to normalize that.

by Anonymousreply 84October 30, 2024 7:04 AM

R84 my sister in law is a runner, in her late 50's and eats like a bird. She makes her own sauces, jams and won't dare eat anything out of a can because of the sodium.

As for my fast food fix, once a week I order Taco Bell or Wendy's, and lol that keeps me regular.

by Anonymousreply 85October 30, 2024 11:42 AM

R21 the cure for too much stress is to spend more time spent on the Internet and forums especially the DL

More discussions about the election and trump is also an obvious stress reducer .

by Anonymousreply 86October 30, 2024 11:49 AM

I had it for years but as my doctor said I would eventually "grow out" of it. Food was not the issue. I tried all of the diets etc and it made zero difference. A doctor who really knew the latest medications helped a lot as did the UNC protocol for hypnosis and ibs. Probiotics helped. The important thing is to keep checking new treatments. There was always something coming down the pipeline. You'll get through it. I know it's really awful.

by Anonymousreply 87October 30, 2024 11:54 AM

Nurses? At one time nurses were the single highest smoking group in the country. And the nurse mentioned above is clearly full of shit.

Shit every day. And it should come out easy and clean. Effortless if you are doing it right. A large heaping tablespoon of Metamucil with 3 glasses of water in the morning us a great way to start the day.

by Anonymousreply 88October 30, 2024 11:54 AM

Probably not a nurse but a medical assistant.
