[quote]Joan VanArk's 60th Birthday Bash

[quote]by: mandylor 21 [replies] 07/05/2003 @ 02:03PM

[quote]I just returned from Joan VanArk's sixtieth birthday party . Attending were Beverly Hill's biggests and brightest, Mackenzie Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Lisa Hartman, and Teri Hatcher were just a few that were on hand. There was a prix fixed meal that ran 45$ which included a dose of xenadrine and slim down solution pills. "We had a great time," says Joan Van Ark, "and for the first hour of the night it was open bar for well liquor!!" But things got a little out of hand when Michele Lee claimed that Marla Gibbs had stolen her glass of Glen Ellen Chardonnay. "well it was mine! and i paid for it and even gave the bartender (Ted Shackelford) a hefty tip!" said Michele. By then it was well past ten and Michele had taken a male guest upstairs to go over some lines she had for her next film part (she's playing the mother of a 4 year old). "If Donna Mills and Nicolette Sheridan hadn't stepped in i dont know what would've happened", said a guest who wanted to go unidentified. " Im just glad Michele and that antonio sobata guy weren't around to witness the dispute". When i arrived The underdressed Charlene Tilton was being escorted out by the doorman (William Devane) . Something about her not having a proper invite. Charlene appeared agitated spewing into the margarita fountain (for an extra 6$ you got to keep the glass that said happy 60th Joan!) and shouting at Michele " Joan got me fired from knots and i had to go and work for that drunk Larry Hagman!!!" But Michele along with Donna Mills paid little atention as they were both disussing their plans to go in together the next day for chemical peels. I wondered where the guest of honor could be when finally by the end of a long evening (around 8 o'clock) Joan was wheeled out and made her appearance. Joan wore a fierce yellow leather ensemble. There was not a dry eye in the house when she crooned a spirited version of "Don't Dry Out Loud". All in all it was a fun evening Did any other dataloungers go? Got any fun backroom stories about Patrick Peterson? What about Ted Shakelford mixing drinks without using his hands? Please share!

I don't understand why anyone would WANT to be heterosexual. They seem so miserable. They have trouble forming and keeping meaningful relationships, they are made neurotic by rigidly defined social and gender roles and their admitted fear of the opposite sex tends to lead to sexual dysfunction. All that frustration makes them extremely difficult to deal with on a social level. They only place they seem to feel comfortable enough to unwind is in Gay clubs where they make normal people uncomfortable with their inherent messiness. And they have the nerve to think WE want to recruit THEM when they are the only ones with active and aggressive conversion programs. It is a national tragedy.

Was in mopurning over a partner who'd recently died of AIDS. Seemed to have something of an infatuation with a porn star named Mark Baxter-I had to agree with him that Baxter was very handsome and too good for porn. He bitched about what a horrible neighbor Lauren Bacall was and he showed me Shirley McLaine's panties which were embossed and hung on a wall in his bathroom. He lived in what used to be the servant's quarters (8th or 9th floor) so his kitchen, living room and bathroom were really small but his bedroom was fairly spacious. Very cozy, though. we had a nice experience and he made me Gumbo. We both knew it was for one night only. He was a good kisser, which I expected from those big ol' lips of his. The rest wasn't particularly memorable but there you are.

[quote] The Interview

[quote] Scene:

[quote] Small but clean and drearily depressing motor court room somewhere between the Rockies and the Appalachians. A site chosen for its anonymity and oh so jejeune.

[quote] Time:

[quote] Cocktail hour my lovelies, of course.

[quote] Enter Elise Harris, young lady reporter of infinite potential, dressed in a smart tailored pinstripe suite, grey I would think. She is blindfolded, and you can see her nostrils flare as they react to the smell of cheap disinfectant and luncheon meats lingering in the room.

[quote] She is lead into the chamber by an unidentified Frenchman, possibly Belgian. Elise hears a growl. Off comes her blindfold as the large cantankerous German shepherd stares intently at her quickening breath. Suddenly she smell something else, yes, this IS Lancelot. As her eyes adjust to the flourescent glare off the shiny tiles, she gasps as she focuses on the vision opposite her, unexpected and terribly pleasing. It's Trudy. Trudy is wearing a striking pair of Oliver Peeples sunglasses, with dark green lenses (very year 2000, don't you think?). A comparision could be made to Sophia Loren, very mysterious and I always got a kick out of Houseboat? You too? Perhaps you are too young. More's the pity sweeties.

This time on BARBARA's

Barbara LaTouraine, like Trudy, suffered a personal crisis and was thrust into financial turmoil. Previously living with her lover in a tony penthouse on the upper west side, subletting, she was thrown out by her evil and unfeeling porcine landlord from Queens whose names are ... we digress. Soon after being evicted she and her lover split. Barbara, a natural femme, could not offer her lover Sally the emotional support required to maintain their relationship.

Barbara now lives in a box on the west side highway at the end of Horatio Street where she longing gazes upon the luxury apartments for which she was destined.

For comfort and social solace, necessary to a gal in her predicament, she's befriended by some of the more attractive tenants of that building (apartment #510) as well as a little girl who lives in a crate down the lane.

Barbara and the little girl, over the space of hours, evolved into a relationship much stronger than a mere sharing of circumstance. Theirs was a love akin to mother-daughter and soon after the little girl moved into Barbara's box.

by Anonymousreply 88February 27, 2023 4:06 AM

Days were spent with Barbara trying to reorganize her priorities and trying to teach the little girl about how to get along in this crazy world. Evenings were spent with Barbara singing to the little girl about home and pussycats. Nights were spent sleeping, that's all. Really.

Warren, the cute one from #510, happened to open his window late one night to get some air after a particularly long session with David, the cute one, and Rob, the cute one. (Why they weren't on The Island that weekend is a mystery to us all) He heard Barbara singing, a cross between Minne Riperton and Suzanne Pleshette, a kind of smoky Doris Day, a light Carol Channing, something unique yet grating. Warren is a bartender at The Data Lounge, and they need a new act and thinks Barbara will wow them.

What Happens?

Will Barbara get the job because she wears this smashing cigarette dress?

Will the little girl die on the day of the audition inspiring Barbara to sing her heart out and get the job with tears streaming down her face?

Will Barbara's evil rich twin, Beulah, show up?

RE: DEBRA MESSING IS A CUNT Let me tell you about Debra Messing.

I used to volunteer at a Sudanese school for blind children with cancer. Yes, blind with cancer. Eye cancer. One day the door opened and in came Debra Messing - she had heard about the school from Charlie Rose, when the two had attended a lecture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on African maskmasking and had run into an Afrikaaner Doctor without Borders. (Debra, as it turns out, speaks several languages.)

Well, she showed up with a copy of the Rodgers & Hart songbook tucked under one arm, a bag of candy in the other arm, and Billy Stritch coming in behind her with a baby grand on a dolly. Debra embraced the children, some of whom had cancer dripping from their sightless eyes, and proceeded to put on a "one-woman Broadway-style show" in that malarial hut we called a schoolroom.

When it was over, she kissed each child tenderly and presented each one with an iPod filled with the great music of the world. While they were squealing with delight, she took me aside, produ ...

(Cut and pasted this from R40 link)

THIS IS KILLING ME! I totally remember this post and this thread. Truly DL's glory days.

[quote] I would give anything to have the actual W&W back. I would get way too excited when I found one of my posts made the cut.

I sometimes joke about this, but I had three of my posts make W&W simultaneously back when that meant something. In retrospect, given what W&W has become (a like button), it means more NOW than it did THEN.

by Anonymousreply 96February 27, 2023 4:30 AM

R96 I hate it now. Well, I don't hate it. It's just meaningless. I get scores of them most days.

It was so much better when the entire site was witness to one's glory!

by Anonymousreply 97February 27, 2023 4:34 AM

I'm gonna say that around 1997, I posted on DL that there was a rumor among the gays at my college that one of our fellow gays was dating the comedian Anthony Clark. This was post Boston Common and pre-Yes Dear. They were insistent. They were gonna ask his boyfriend to ask him to do a fundraiser for the university's first gay student association. I asked here if anyone knew if he was gay.

IT'S BEEN 25 YEARS YOU BITCHES AND I STILL DON'T HAVE AN ANSWER!!

Neither IMDb nor Wikipedia says anything about his personal life still today.

by Anonymousreply 98February 27, 2023 4:38 AM

r98 he was on the outskirts of the 80s early 90s str8 bait boys; So, I really couldn't say.. though there's been rumours for decades and most assume yes, that it's an open secret but no one can point you to any porn.

by Anonymousreply 99February 27, 2023 4:46 AM

R1 I remember the old OLTL threads where the Todd/Blair fans and Todd/Tea fans went nuts.

I believe those are what lead to all soap threads being deleted for years.

by Anonymousreply 100February 27, 2023 4:46 AM

r64 that was during my off years but there were earlier threads when the who's the boss kid was outed. . . just not accessible now or easily found. so many, so many glass closets . . . that was one reason the DL was feared/hated. Word of mouth actually traveled faster back then... not so much noise.

by Anonymousreply 101February 27, 2023 4:54 AM

Excessively obsessive topics like Lord of the Rings actors' purported relationships (blue and yellow wear them fine fellows) and soap operas were banished to their own forums for years (Prancing Pony Lounge and Soaps respectively). Once the entire site became a single forum, they were treated as any other topic.

by Anonymousreply 102February 27, 2023 4:54 AM

There was a lot of gossip about him being gay here, back when I started posting in 2000.

by Anonymousreply 103February 27, 2023 5:02 AM

What was the other message board we used to trade off to? I might be blurring some of them.

There were different cliques that found their way. I came in with the L.A. irc (and various bbses; delos, beeline, annex) whores that eventually moved to gay com but I know there was another ghetto board we used to let things slip, a lot more bawdy than this one.

yeah, bbses at their end were filled with flame wars (I know of many that still haven't died.) or turned into pure hookup, too. Newsgroups became spam . didn't take too long for the web to embody that too. But we all blamed AOL instead.

by Anonymousreply 112February 27, 2023 5:35 AM

r68, we were on nearly permanent Primetime back then, plus there was about six months where DL was shut down.

Also, DL doesn't always archive properly in Google so I imagine the same goes for the Internet Archive as well.

by Anonymousreply 113February 27, 2023 5:37 AM

r113 Yeah, there's some raw file dumps out there too, but there's no guarantee it would even have the site since they're broad archive dumps. so, opening said files will likely drain memory, besides the hassle to find something that could read it plus code... organize in any linear, digestible, manner. The only ones that ever have are government nerds and then they usually had a more isolated dump just set to fed sites.

by Anonymousreply 114February 27, 2023 5:46 AM

[quote][R68], we were on nearly permanent Primetime back then, plus there was about six months where DL was shut down.

by Anonymousreply 115February 27, 2023 6:08 AM

Does anyone remember the Darkspawn/Bonisoli drama?

by Anonymousreply 116February 27, 2023 6:19 AM

I'm not sure why no one seems to remember that DL was shut down for several months back in 2010 or so. People made alternate forums for users to go to, and you can still find mention of "Datalounge Refugees" boards on Google (one mention is on Female First, back when straight ladies from FF would come to DL to scream at us about Angelina Jolie).

There was a whole period from 2009 to 2014 or so where DL was a complete garbage fire. There were technical glitches constantly, the site would go down for days on end until one day it went down for something like 4-6 months. We'd be pay-only for months and months, people got banned for no reason, at one point they blocked every mobile IP address so you couldn't post with tablets or phones for a year or more. Someone who works at Mediapolis would log in every few months and have an enormous meltdown and blame users for a variety of things that didn't make any sense.

It was a huge change from the pre-2009 days when the board was so active that you couldn't keep up with it, and things were funny and informative. This is a good thread about the old days:

I accidentally found DL back in 2012, when I was on a site called Tom and Lorenzo. I'm so glad I did too. That's going to change soon though.

Well, thank you. I did have a draft post where Deb and Michael Feinstein visited Sandy Hook shortly after the Adam Lanza shootings so she could "bring back the good name of Lanza" by singing the greatest hits of Mario Lanza, but I couldn't make it work. It ended with the mother of two slain toddlers holding their bodies, rocking back and forth, and saying, "Who was that cunt?"

Anyway, if Deb returns it will likely be at the scene of a school shooting; she's been through hurricanes and earthquakes and famine already.

Does anyone have a link to the thread where we went on a "field trip" to a UK tabloid shortly after Madeleine McCann disappeared? A lot of posters were commenting things like "the little trollop asked for it!" and the Britfraus in the comments were going NUTS. It was up all weekend until the UK webbie came back on Monday.

This thread is my new favorite. So many happy memories of DL wit and wisdom!

by Anonymousreply 180March 2, 2023 9:29 AM

R179 I remember that thread!

by Anonymousreply 181March 2, 2023 11:00 AM

The link at R40 almost hurts to read. We're so, so far from what this place used to be.

[quote]Does anyone remember Shobe?

Unfortunately. Be careful, mentioning her might make her materialize again.

by Anonymousreply 182March 2, 2023 11:36 AM

Certainly, R178. I apologise about the setting out: I'm trying to do two par breaks between each one but in my last post it didn't "take".

RE: A fascinating look at "God" (not recommended for idiots)

Why is it that those who are Born Again are always the ones you wish hadn't been born even once?

RE: Has anyone here visited Auschwitz or any other concentration camps?

No, but I've been to The Townhouse.

RE: Things parents tell their kids to make them feel better.

Of course you're not adopted. We wouldn't pick you on purpose.

RE: I just had hot fireman sex

"Me and firestud were just staring each other down."

He was probably in awe that in all his years as a firefighter, he'd never seen anything that flaming.

I saw a post from a 20 something me, likely made after an NYC night out, and all that entailed in the 90s. I am going back to bed to think about those glorious times!

by Anonymousreply 184March 2, 2023 11:50 AM

ElderLez, were you a poster in the now-defunct DL Lesbian Forum? Along with scullysuit, pornchick, Shobe, etc.?

I'm wondering if our (virtual) paths crossed back then -- that was a great community.

by Anonymousreply 185March 2, 2023 12:02 PM

It was R185. And I read it all, but I just lurked for most of my first two decades on DL. I barely posted and I didn’t start my first thread until 2005; long after the separate forums were gone.

I do. LeAnne DeVette started a thread on the tabloid message board entitled "SHE HAD IT COMING!"

Pandemonium from British fraus ensued.

Hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 187March 2, 2023 1:11 PM

Hehe, I still couldn't read or write back in 1995 or speak English.

by Anonymousreply 188March 2, 2023 2:00 PM

DL will be 30 in two years.

((((((((((GASP))))))))))

Well, two out of three ain't bad, dear.

That would have been summer (May and June) 2007. Unfortunately, the Wayback Machine captures for 2007 redirect to the old Primetime screen if you click an archive link on the main page.

I've also tried checking for captures of the old Daily Mirror boards. They have the Maddie McCann forums but nothing for the field trip, unfortunately. I'm guessing the DM admins made sure our visit got excluded from the search robots.

Brendad Ickson also started several threads. Trouser gravy was mentioned, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, lots of hysterical comments à la "OMG SHE'S JUST A CHILD!!!"

[quote] pint-size harlot

Still makes me laugh.

I came to DL in the late 1990's. It fulfilled my expectation of the internet....and in SOME cases continues to do so TODAY.

by Anonymousreply 193March 3, 2023 9:46 PM

LeAnne Devette was hilarious. But problematic if I remember correctly.

by Anonymousreply 194March 3, 2023 9:53 PM

R194 She went after the ubiquitous troll "Daniel Bexton" and didn't pull any punches.

I hope all those Michfest threads were archived. I only came here around 2020, and finding those threads eventually was so joyous. Extremely funny, but also kinda affectionate as well in some ways. Not quite as nasty as some people get now, at least from what I see.

Hell, there were some old threads on trans people like Meredith Talusan and Chrysanthemum Tran which were very funny with a lot of posters clearly just making fun of the personalities, not their identity. Meredith even turned up in one of them (or so we're led to believe) and had a sense of humour about it.

r168 The difference was in time, speed and data transfer or storage. You might think because everyone being capped near the same speed that it wouldn't make a difference. But given the speed was slower than passage of thoughts, people were conscious of it. Plus elders of the time couldn't grasp l33t and they once dominated sites like these instead of the younger generations that largely saw it as a waste of time and/or too expensive. The more annoying part was waiting for everybody else to see your response and somebody else to respond. Given the limitations of numerous users, it could take days, weeks even months. No one has the patience for that, anymore.

off topic but I've been hyper analyzing myself with a shop, recently, that has technology challenged owners across the country because I've been spoiled by usually buying via third parties where there's greater pressures small business owners to have the same response time and customer service as corporate entities. It doesn't matter that I know they're reputable company and it will eventually be done, and they're just old and move at their own pace because they're overly cautious about online business... old to me because if I was a little younger I would have thought nothing about driving to that hellhole of a state and picking it up myself despite the personal costs or the mileage it would add.

This really brings back amazing memories. I found DL very early on in both its existence and my coming out. I can't recall how I found it, but I've been on it ever since! Makes me miss the 90s and all the cock I got back in those days.

I'll be 49 in June and I'm still at it.
