Ever since they joined up with the weather people and local on-air personalities, why would anyone pay a bit of attention to their choices. They made themselves a joke and once in a while someone's talent is too overwhelming to overlook and coincides with celebrity & popularity so they manage to sound reasonable for that one moment.
SAG at one time was the real deal - even more than the Oscars - and it sacrificed that for the more powerful union. SMDH.

Enough of the Klan Granny nonsense, OP. That is strictly for Meghan and the Spare, neither of whom are part of this tonight, as far as I know.
May the best actors win.

If Austin Butler wins tonight, I'll assume he's a shoo-in for an oscar. He did do a great job with the speaking voice of Elvis as well as his moves. He gave it his all. As much as I love Colin Farrell, I wouldn't be pissed if he loses to Austin.

Like I said before - it’s tricky dressing when you’re short though - she typically wore shorter dresses or suits to these type of shows, but I guess you get to a point where you don’t want or show your legs anymore (there are alwsts tights though)

Agreed on all accounts, but DDL did have an advantage being born into luxury and exposed to the best schools/training.
Joaquin was literally born dirt-poor in a shack in Puerto Rico (while his parents were missionaries for that crazy cult) and then afterward performed on the streets with his siblings to make ends meet before they hit it big in Hollywood. He never went to high school.

[quote] I can't really stand her but she was a great Mary Todd.
She was fantastic in every scene except for the big breakdown scene where she starts sobbing hysterically and angrily over the Lincolns' dead son Willie. She seemed like she was pulling from her bag of tricks from "Sybil" there. I think she would have won the Oscar even over Anne Hathaway had she done something different in that scene.
Because she was superb otherwise. She's wonderful in the scene where she holds the evening reception at the White House and artfully tongue-lashes senators and cabinet members who have been opposing her husband, and also in the scene at the theatre (not the night he's killed) and gets into an argument with her husband. And she's even better in the final scene (set before Lincoln's assassination) when she and Lincoln take a carriage ride together and they muse what their legacy will be, and she regretfully realizes she will be remembered only as a great president's unstable wife.

Michelle is probably going to win the Oscar. Everyone in Hollywood likes her, and she's been very humble this awards seasons and has been playing the game correctly in terms of working the awards circuit.
I think people don't want to give one to Blanchett as much this year because she's been a preachy creep when she's won awards this season, and she should have announced her retirement from film after the Oscars (so it didn't seem like she was doing it to say, "This is your last chance to give me a prize!").

One thing for sure it’ll be a suspenseful Oscars in three of the acting categories. Angela vs. Jamie Lee, with Kerry the dark horse. Austin vs. Brendan. I think Colin is now out of it. I’m still predicting a Cate win. Many years it’s a numbers game. Cate has won the most hardware this awards season. She blows Michelle out of the water in terms of performance that very few actresses could pull off in Tar. Suck it Cate haters. Yeoh isn’t in the same multiverse as Cate. Even Michelle know this. The Daniels will probably win directing. But EEAAO ain’t going to win best pic. I don’t care how well it did at the guild awards.

R551 untrue. With Bassett losing at BAFTA and SAG, it’s a wide open race now with her and Jamie Lee the front runners, with Kerry maybe the wild card in the category. No way JLC is out of this. While I dislike the film, EEAAO had significant victories at DGA, PGA and now SAG the past two weekends.

No, they won’t. SAG = Oscars. That’s the rule. Always has been, always will.

If Butler didn’t win tonight he sure as fuck isn’t winning the Oscar. Tonight was his best chance to win.
The In Memoriam was the best in many years. No dumbass singer hogging the camera time away from the dead people. Now if they’d just tell the fucking audience to hold their applause until ALL of the dead people got their screen time.

R559 I’d give Fraser the edge, but Butler is still in the thick of it. His wins at the globes and BAFTA can’t be ignored. Along with the Academy’s love for musical biopics. With recent wins for Renee Zellweger and Rami Malek playing Garland and Mercury, no way you can rule Butler out.

I see Klan grannies have arrived. Blacks must walk a fine line of being continuously humble while not speaking too much about their struggles or hardships. Basically they must walk an impossible tightrope.
Anyway I left y’all some pudding pie on the coffee table with whip cream on top.

Is Blanchett going to act on the stage instead of the movies? I remember an interview Streep gave years ago where she thought the perfect plan would be to concentrate on the stage when she aged out of movie roles.

It's now the favorite heading into the Oscars.

Michelle Yeoh is the first actress of a certain age to overtake Meryl Streep She's getting first choice of roles before Meryl. She's currently filming the two Wicked movies in London, two Avatar sequels, the upcoming Transformers movie and Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Agatha Christie Poirot movie.

These are all films that M should pass on anyway. She needs to finds a character-driven piece as her next vehicle.

We got a rare glimpse at his wife Katharine Ross at his table. Looking lovely, unlined face it seemed, but with gray hair. Great string of movies - Butch Cassidy, The Graduate, Stepford Wives, mostly retired I guess.

"Danielle Deadwyler did not crack a smile night."
She's probably exhausted. Her publicist and manager probably told her to go to SAGs as the "right thing to do" in terms of playing the game. SAGs are the day after the NAACP Image Awards the night before (and I assume social events/parties thereafter). Granted, they were in Pasadena, so no lengthy travel. But still, she's probably actually physically exhausted beyond mentally fried. Why mentally fried? A long awards season with early talk about an Oscar nom that she didn't get. So the disappointment from that. Then once people took issue with her and Viola not getting noms, then she has to deal with all the questions about fairness, representation, etc. even though she wasn't the one who brought it on.

They could have played a little bit of the "Flying Nun" theme music or the wonderful "Gidget" by Johnny Tillotson. Granted Sally Field wanted to get away from being typecast as a sitcom star, but she was engaging, memorable and adorable doing them.

Playing Out Here on My Own was a great call for the In Memoriam. Calling James Caan for that prized final spot at the Oscars - because who can resist a scene from The Godfather?

I really loved seeing such talented long-serving Asian actors being recognised for acting at last. Jamie Lee Curtis is officially insufferable, ditto Jennifer Coolidge. Was so glad Jason Bateman won for Ozark but Laura Linney was absolutely robbed. Bateman’s wife did not seem thrilled - camera cut to her while he was accepting and she looked pissed. Hmmmmmm
Netflix pulled it off just fine with no annoying ads.

R558 where do you come up with this stuff? The SAGs have awarded performances that didn’t even get nominated for Oscars, like Emily Blunt in A Quiet Place & Mary Poppins, or Idris Elba for that Netflix movie. They won the categories their years and weren’t even nominated at Oscars.

Laura Linney wasn’t robbed and she has plenty of awards. She’s fine.
Zendaya was robbed, however.

I respectfully disagree r595. Zendaya has already been lauded for a fairly one-note role. Laura Linney was fantastic as Wendy Byrde and deserved to be recognised.

To the poster comparing Care to Meryl, I think Streep doesn't take herself that seriously and is always agree how overrated she is. She also doesn't try to intellectualism her movies in interviews, so I think the comparison isn't accurate.
Plus Streep hasn't won any awards since The Iron Lady, excepting her GG lifetime achievement award.
And Meryl has 2 SAGs, one for Angels In America and the other for Doubt. Viola famously best her in 2012 which led a lot of commentators to predict V would get the Oscar for The Help.
