Why did DL legend Vivian Vance stay in a bad marriage for so long?
We haven't had a Vivian Vance thread for a while.
In the early years of their marriage, Phil was the breadwinner, but after a season or two on I Love Lucy, she was making more money than him, and then later substantially more. So she wasn't dependent on him financially. They did not have children together either.
In interviews from the 1960s/1970s, she seems very assertive, like she didn't take crap from anyone. Lucie Arnaz has said she was one of the few people who would stand up to Lucille. She didn't seem like the type of woman who would have tolerated abuse. (I know it was a "different time," but plenty of women left, especially if they had the means.)
Everyone at Desilu knew he beat her; they despised him, and she had a lot of support there. Lucille herself urged her to leave for many years.
Why do you think she stayed?

Have you ever read some of the threads on DL? People are desperate to hold on to a man. They will put up with any sort of behavior to not be alone. Why do you think Viv is a DL fave?

If Desilu hated him, they had an odd way of showing it. They hired him a few times to play roles on ILL, most notably in one of the Hollywood episodes.

He stepped in at the last minute in the Dore Schary episode, r12. I doubt anyone was very happy about it, but they might not have had much choice.
The other episode he appeared in was the fifth of the series, before anyone knew him (or Vivian) well.
I forget who, but someone who worked at Desilu said they purposely avoided using him. (They recycled other bit actors, like Frank Nelson and Charles Lane.) Desi also refused to cast him opposite Vivian in Guestward, Ho!

But why not get ANYBODY else? It’s Hollywood in the 50s. And Desi and Lucy could have just called ANYBODY else. Come on.

r14 I think it's because Schary backed out at the very last minute (perhaps the morning of filming) and Phil, who was known for always hanging around the studio, already knew the lines.

Perhaps she loved him. Vivian suffered from mental illness and could barely do the show. She would pull her car over and vomit on the way to the studio. She kept a piece of paper with her name and address on it in her pocket in case she forgot who she was. She was in therapy all through I Love Lucy. Her mother was a piece of work. She was probably vulnerable to someone like Phil.

Vivian came back from her honeymoon with her gay husband during the Lucy Show and went on and on about how much sex they had. Everyone was laughing behind her back.

Vivian Vance lived in Edward Everett Horton's guest house on his estate in Encino (called Belleigh Acres, LOL) for a period. I'm not sure when (or if she was there alone), but it was definitely before the early 1960s...when part of his estate was claimed under eminent domain to build the 101 Freeway through Encino.

Sad that she had a marriage like that. Maybe she didn't think she could find someone better. Maybe she felt like this man was better than no man.

It's pretty obvious that Viv would rather be abused than be alone. Her final husband was Gay, but Viv seemed very happy with him. Gay guys make great husbands if you're not interested in sex
