OP’s pic had me!! Then R3’s lost me. Good Christ that’s a ‘mo. But good for him, must be difficult. Very brave.
When is a hot, reasonably-male-ish, uniquely gifted current pro athlete going to bless the world and come out? They must exist even if that combination of assets is rare.
And no, Nassib doesn’t count…he’s very male, but not hot (he looks almost special needs), and he’s of middling/forgettable gifts on the field.

R18 I always wonder what happens to family/national identities & nationalities when entire peoples are yoked suddenly together under one flag or country name. How long does it take for them to start thinking of each other as one people? What do parents teach their young children about their national heritage? Do individuals still privately consider themselves say, Dalmatian or whatever, despite what their passport states?

by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 14, 2023 9:01 AM |
R41 honestly, though, there’s so much more scrutiny and pressure on the Western lads, even if more positive than negative. There’s immense onus on whoever does stick their head over the parapet to act as a consistently good role model and uphold the gay community as well as their sport, which is something we know most footballers struggle to do at the best of times.
No disrespect, though—it takes immense courage for a young Czech man can decide to do this on his own steam with no national nor domestic backing or encouragement, and it does make you think, what excuse do the current international English, German, French, Spanish, Italian players and so on have? But the Wearwrn players are simply more famous and under the microscope.

R40- Good FOR him not ON him
by Anonymous | reply 49 | February 14, 2023 1:20 PM |
R40 sadly, the Prem is becoming increasingly less likely to foster comings-out, as more and more clubs sell out to backers from UAE, China & America, who tend to be less secular and liberal, as well as happy to pull their sponsorship money at the first sign of offence to their values.
The major topflight clubs still owned by Brits number few—at the time of writing, only Brighton, Everton, Tottenham & West Ham. Those are the clubs most likely to protect, encourage and allow gay players to come out and be themselves.
If only we had more Euro billionaires as backers, like French & Spanish.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | February 14, 2023 1:48 PM |
^ and considering there are but a few Spanish billionaires I wouldn’t wait around for that. Better hope is the French, German, Swiss or Dutch…maybe Swedish or Norse but they don’t tend to invest their money that way.

by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 16, 2023 12:40 PM |
R82 I scrolled through the comments this morning. I'd say a majority of the negative ones are from trolls often posting multiple times. When you take these out and compare to the positive posts and overall post likes the negatives are a small minority. Most people ARE supportive or aren't really bothered.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | February 16, 2023 1:05 PM |
R84 yes, there’s mostly neutrality.
Even my lowkey homophobic Man United dad in his 60s just shrugged when he heard the news, said “fair enough if the lad can play [well], just keep it about the game and leave out the politics”, and left it at that. Tbh he’s more annoyed by the showpony flashy metrosexual players always seen clubbing or at fashion shows, the ones who dive and court attention (Dele, Grealish etc.), rather than hardworking laddy gay players.
Even the casuals don’t really give a shit about a gay player, that’s not of interest or note to them. A majority of straight men watch the football for the competitive event, for the glory of their team doing well (or the agony of their team doing badly), and to enjoy slagging off the opposition team. It’s not really often about individual players or private life drama for them.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | February 16, 2023 1:11 PM |
r81 The point is that companies getting on the LGB bandwagon via simple performative things like tweets aren't worth your tears. This isn't 2002 or something.
Many gay players may remain closeted because they grew up in the more conservative 90s and 2000s as athletes. The locker room will be very different vibe than the PR office. If we are talking soccer then these folks could have been pulled up from some poor or simply conservative areas that still look down on gay rights. Your childhood is baggage you don't just easily shake off because your job now openly supports gay employees. We will see more Gen-Z players come out compared to Millennial players.
Finally, I said being gay is good PR and I was referring to the companies. What's better for the players depends on the person. Being gay is good PR, being straight remains great PR.

R87 pretty fair judging by this thirst trap post
by Anonymous | reply 88 | February 16, 2023 3:34 PM |
The problem is not the trolls, but the fact that this guy is a nobody. I don't want to devalue his coming out, as it was obviously brave and he should be proud. But the thing is, there's a reason nobody has heard of him. He probably isn't a very good player. And by coming out he basically drew attention to his sexuality instead of letting his football talk for him. The ideal would be to have a popular, well known and top player coming out. Someone who is good, so his coming out wouldn't be just to get attention (even if that's not the case here, that's still how it comes across, it's a bit "I can't make it in football, so I want to be famous for being a gay footballer!") Don't get me wrong, it's a step in the right direction, but it's not the big player we all wanted to come out.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | February 16, 2023 3:44 PM |
Someone said he managed to score just 4 goals in 45 matches. Don't know if it's true, but it might be. There must be a reason why he's a nobody and why we hadn't heard of him before coming out. Also, there must be a reason Getafe didn't want him and he went on loan to Sparta Prague instead.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | February 16, 2023 3:47 PM |
R89 He's played for his country 45 times, and has played for teams in the premier leagues of Czech Republic, Spain and Italy since 2016. That is top level by any definition. You don't have that kind of career by being 'not very good'.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | February 16, 2023 3:54 PM |
R89 You only don't know him because he hasn't played for an English/English language team or is at the level of international stardom like a Messi, Ronaldo or an Mbappe.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | February 16, 2023 3:57 PM |
R91 Fair point. I don't really know who he is. I'm not a huge football fan by any means, but I still know about the most famous ones. I had never heard about this guy before he came out. Lots of people are saying he is mediocre and he just came out because he wants attention. This is why I would want a more well known name to come out.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | February 16, 2023 4:03 PM |
Lots of people have an agenda to try and minimise the impact of any player coming out. Thing is if you don't know much about football and aren't really interested then you're going to have a long, long wait before a mega-star comes out, because statistically there are very few of them and the chances of one of them being gay are fairly smaller.
In the meantime, don't shit on a player who is active at international-level . This is a big step for football. No-one else at this level has stepped up and done this before in this sport.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | February 16, 2023 4:27 PM |
R94 what is even a mega star? Not that many players have the kind of name recognition as, say, Ozil or Giroud, never mind Messi. Is Ben Davies a star? I think if someone like TAA came out, it would be huge, even though he's not mega famous.
by Anonymous | reply 95 | February 16, 2023 7:27 PM |
You're, of course, naming players that have played in the English leagues, ergo you've heard about them. You'll find that there was loads of press about Jakub's coming out in Spain and Italy as that's where he'd played.
If he'd played in England - and he was considered for a transfer to Arsenal in 2017 - you would have heard of him. Give it up. You're just being a dick.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | February 16, 2023 7:37 PM |
What R85 said it's also another factor of why it's hard for some footballers (or any kind of professional athletes) to come out, whether they are superstars or not, and it's that foolish concept that has been going on in the last 10-15 years of marketing footballers in base of who they sleep with instead of their athletics skills/talents. And with social media that has increased considerably. Though Becks and Posh spice were tabloid sensations since the late 90s, I consider this tredn actually started in the 2010s when Shakira started dating Pique.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | February 16, 2023 7:42 PM |
R89, any athlete playing professionally is, by definition, an excellent player. Even the worst pros are 100 times better than the average person on the street

Make him national team Captain. Seriously. Not for tokenism or PR or woke points, but because he has leadership qualities, evident from this courageous decision and composed follow-through. That's who you want to represent your country.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | February 17, 2023 2:36 PM |
The whole interview is here. You need to use google translate. Yikes at the questions about his ex-girlfriend which he refused to answer. I still don't get that at all. How could he cum inside of a woman if he's gay? I think he's probably bi instead of gay, but he now wants to be with men, so he came out.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | February 17, 2023 2:48 PM |
R120 could he be a Kinsey 4/5, conceivably? Able to perform and get off with a female if horny/high/frustrated/young enough, but pretty much apathetic or uninterested if there are men available too, and not at all romantically drawn to one.
Lance Bass is this sort of bisexual, seemingly. By his own admission he has successfully had sex with a fair few women in the past, but all when he was in his teens/early-mid 20s, enjoying a wealthy partyboy popstar lifestyle.

Posho at r115, does he have a jersey we can buy?
I ask that because here in the States, most of our players have jerseys for sale and if they’re not famous to the point you can grab one off the rack, you can still have one made with their team jersey and they’ll add his number and name.

YAK-oub, The stress in Czech language is almost always on the first syllable in a word.

I like how the word 'bisexual' is so stigmatized that even bis don't want to use it.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | February 18, 2023 1:22 AM |
R128 Literally. If you can cum inside of a woman and make a baby, you aren't gay. Jakub is bisexual. Possibly with a preference for men.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | February 18, 2023 5:39 AM |
R129 I don't think there's much "possibly" about it. If he preferred women, coming out publicly would be unnecessary.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | February 18, 2023 8:36 AM |
R130 True. But he is bisexual per the definition though. Because otherwise he wouldn't have been able to father a child.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | February 18, 2023 8:42 AM |
R131 I'm not sure I agree with that. Some gay men can be very deep in the closet. It's possible to physically fuck someone you're not attracted to -- porn stars and escorts do it all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 132 | February 18, 2023 8:46 AM |
His past makes him less than an ideal gay poster child for football. The homophobes already think being gay is a choice. They all make fun of the fact that he has an ex-girlfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | February 18, 2023 8:56 AM |
He said he didn't reach out to anyone for advice before coming out. That was probably wise because if he had they probably would have talked him out of it. He said it was his own decision and he just decided to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | February 18, 2023 9:00 AM |
R133 But the minds of homophobes won’t be changed anyway so if he had never touched a woman before they wouldn’t view him any differently.
Once you stop pandering to people who will never accept us, life becomes more enjoyable.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | February 18, 2023 9:08 AM |
R130/R132 exactly, even if he is somewhat or a little bi (enough to get hard and cum in a vagina), by coming out like he has he’s making a choice to shut the door on any chance of a serious long term committed public relationship with a woman, so he must prefer men significantly.
If he was even a Kinsey 3/‘50-50’ bi in terms of preference (and many athletes & celebrities are, on the downlow), he’d just have stayed in the closet, carried on living a straight life publicly for the ease and status of it all, probably marrying and popping out a few kids before 30 like footballers tend to do, and keeping a few extra-marital gay dalliances secret like everyone else.
To have made this choice and announced it to the world, he must want men and want to be with one badly enough that he’ll give up the chance of getting a beautiful WAG.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | February 18, 2023 1:44 PM |
It's true most footballers have children at an early age, maybe Jakub was following the others.

by Anonymous | reply 138 | February 18, 2023 5:32 PM |
R138 I love the fact that he used the word homosexual, as it's the only word that hasn't been captured yet. Gay basically means everything these days, queer too.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | February 18, 2023 5:42 PM |
R132 And most porn whores and escorts are bisexual/pansexual, so what?
by Anonymous | reply 140 | February 19, 2023 1:40 AM |
R140 G4P isn't bisexual jsyk. And the jury's still out on whether pansexual is anything but nymphomania caused by trauma.

by Anonymous | reply 143 | February 19, 2023 3:47 PM |
Great: personable, well-spoken, great role-model. And cute, or at least, hell I wouldn't kick him out of bed.
This will keep happening more and more now.
About his ex-girlfriend: most men probably have the potential to be a little bit bi. No, not absolutely everyone, before the gold star gays come at me. But in some circumstances a man whose interests are mostly in men can have sex with a woman and vice versa.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | February 19, 2023 5:55 PM |
Also, do you think that when the boomers die off we'll finally be free of the self-hating posters who insist on calling any newly out man 'she' and pronouncing him so obviously gay he could be seen from the moon based on his mannerisms? Newsflash, scrutinise the mannerisms of any man of whatever orientation and 90% of them will do something that looks stereotypical or gay in a certain light eventually, conventional masculine standards are very hard to live up to.
Jakub could have passed and lived his life in the closet but he chose not to, good for him.
Maybe there's a boyfriend in his future but personally? I hope there's a brief fling or one night stand we get to hear about. It'd be good to see an out gay athlete as a guy who just enjoys casual sex sometimes like the straight ones do.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | February 19, 2023 6:01 PM |
Good for him. He'll get far more hot dick this way rather than hiding in the closet.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | February 19, 2023 6:07 PM |
R139 Nah "gay" is still reserved for same sex attraction, almost always used for men, though some women seem to prefer it over lesbian.
I suspect he only used homosexual due to English being his second language.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | February 19, 2023 6:13 PM |
R147 Gay is not gay as long as trans men call themselves gay. Gay means same sex attracted, aka homosexual. The T have hijacked the word gay too, so it has changed meaning. Trans men are never gay. It's not possible. Gay men like dick. Gay men are not attracted to vagina, whatever the vagina holders call themselves.

After Google Translating the whole interview I like him even more now. He deliberately made this statement to encourage other players to come out. He expects some negative reactions and chants - the interviewer mentioned a particular homophobic song that gets sung in Czech football - and his intention is to be tough and just face it down and show it doesn't affect him at all. Yeah, I think he's going to be the guy that finally gets it done.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | February 19, 2023 6:33 PM |
Homosexual is the only word left that we can use that the T haven't captured and/or changed the meaning of. I only use homosexual or same sex attracted. Gay has lost its meaning.

R148 This topic is about a football player coming out as gay. It's got nothing to do with trans and I'm sick of obsessive people turning every topic into an anti trans discussion.
So, other than this one post, I'm not going to reply to anyone else regarding comments about trans people in this thread. Enough.
by Anonymous | reply 155 | February 19, 2023 7:01 PM |
I've always found it interesting that for one of the most irreligious countries on the planet that produces so much gay porn, Czechia's gay scene is strangely anaemic. The gay life is far more vibrant in Warsaw, for example. They need to get their shit together.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | February 19, 2023 7:05 PM |
Anyway this was always going to be the guy who got it done right? Not a superstar with huge transfer value or a player who's a celebrity outside of football. Just a solid and professional guy who is a respected player and established competitor in the biggest leagues in the world. He'll lead, just by going out and doing his job, and the others will follow.

by Anonymous | reply 166 | February 19, 2023 10:36 PM |
Not to hijack the thread, can one of the more social media-savvy gentlemen here enlighten me about something? I frequently see black heart emojis used, and it seems like sometimes they're used for good things (like where you might expect to see a red heart) and sometimes it seems they're being used to wish ill on someone. Does anybody have a definitive idea about this?
Getting back to the topic, as much as we'd like to see a superstar, if Jakub can stay strong and maintain his level, even if it's not that of a star, that would still be a humungous step forward, especially if/when he goes back to La Liga in Spain. I would hate to see some top player come out, and then crumble under the pressure.

I agree with R145 that self loathing queens who start projecting their own issues on young, newly out gay man, bitching about his mannerism and imagined lack of manliness and proclaiming he must be a "woman" in bed because of a facial expression on a photo from when he was a boy, are obnoxious and unfunny.
Plus they are stupid. Not to offend anyone, but they were playing with dolls and then engaged in activities and interests that are percieved as feminine. So they have no idea what a level of manliness, focus, physicall strength and aggression it takes to become a successful football player. Sissies could not cope with that. This is different type of fag, the type that have always been out of radar, cause they used to be closeted in the past.

R169 what, lithe midgets?
Footballers are not known to be physically stunning. Fit yes. But it’s mostly a bunch of little guys running around. Looks like middle schoolers on a field. And yes, I’m very familiar with most of the current pro and standout player stats. I know there are some stunners but they’re uncommon. Pique for instance, even Kimmich (on the shorter side). There are also the upper outliers, >6’3”. They might at as well be <5’8”.
Freakishly tall and amusingly short don’t stir most people, IRL. They’re only good for still pics, as long they’re not standing near a normal human male or a doorway or a car…something that gives perspective.

It’s amusing but more in a cringy way.
He is the definition of ‘bitchy queen’. There is nothing masculine or natural about his affect. It’s purely performative b/c he has a fetish for a certain type of guy, so he apes them.

R42 Yes it is, but not when it comes to soccer.
Unlike UK, in Spain there were no anti homophobia (or racism) campaings and that's maybe because the leaders of La liga and the spanish federation are both known for their far right ideas.
Only four spanish teams made clear statements against homophobia..
Soccer is like 30 years behind society in Spain.
What makes me hopeful is that Jakub received an standing ovation from the audience in his first match, and that's huge in Europe.
Of course there was a warm reception from some clubs and players but i suppse that has something to do with him being liked. Former spanish international (and now coach) Michel said that he was worried when he saw Jakub's name trending on twitter because he thought something bad happened and was happy to know it was just him coming out

(Or whichever crass turn-of-phrase illuminates the point best)
If we want it to be normal and natural for all individuals to live their truth and work to find their conception of happiness, STOP the performative, cliched, exploitative fanfare. Simply say “Great! Good for you. You are welcome here and valued…now back to work.”

Yes, it may be a job requirement in international soccer, especially for someone who's not a superstar, but compare with MLB, where some Latin and Japanese players have interpreters for years after they arrive.
I do wish he'd address the girlfriend and kid he may or may not be supporting. Is he bisexual? Did he realize he was gay later in life? Was it peer pressure to hook up with a girl? As somebody who was slobbering over men's underwear ads when I was in grade school, this stuff fascinates me.

I'm not into soccer -- or any sport, for that matter -- but as a fellow 7, I find him relatable.

Son of a bitch, r267. Why bother coming out if you're going to pull crap like that? Apparently a piece of shit that comes out is still a piece of shit. And thanks a lot for working those stereotypes about gays being weak drug users.
Long story short (if the details are wrong blame Google translate), he got nailed for drunk driving (after already having lost his license in Spain), passed the alcohol screen but refused to take a drug test. Then he got dropped by his club and now released a vomitrocious statement about walking away from football for his mental health. Cunt. Hopefully his kid's mother has some kind of gainful employment.

[quote] Hello. In recent years and especially the last year, so many things have accumulated around me that it is better to slow down and think about your health. From the age of 18, his whole life revolved around football. He gave me a lot, took something from me and sometimes even taught me lessons. It wasn't the best sporting year for me but I always preferred club results. I am more sad that my health and mental state of mind does not allow me to continue the pursuit of the title and the cup. I can't even find the words to thank Sparta so much! Thanks to all players, coaches and fans! ❤️ I also appreciate the support of everyone around including the media where we always showed mutual respect. Have a good one buffalo

Fourth-tier player comes out by kissing his boyfriend.
[quote] The 28-year-old, goalkeeper for Marbella FC who won promotion to Spain's fourth-tier Segunda RFEF division on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over Real Jaen, finished his tweet by writing in capped-up letters: 'GRACIAS' followed by two heart emoticons.

by Anonymous | reply 289 | May 15, 2023 12:38 AM |
R289 A little of both. It was on the field, right after the game had ended, so Marbella knew they'd just won the championship, and fans and media descended on to the field to celebrate with the players and do interviews. As you can see, the kiss shows "Leja" still wearing his bright yellow goalie kit from the game and he hasn't even taken off his gloves yet.
Cute photo from two years ago.

by Anonymous | reply 295 | May 16, 2023 7:47 PM |
R295 as I understand it, homosexuality isn't really that big of a deal or viewed as a negative in Spain, either.
It seems, at least from an outside perspective (and please correct me if I'm wrong), that visible homosexuality has been accepted there in sports & general entertainment for a long time.
by Anonymous | reply 296 | May 16, 2023 9:51 PM |
But soccer is a totally different story. A first division player coming out would be huge in Spain
by Anonymous | reply 297 | May 16, 2023 9:54 PM |
R294 The photo is from the boyfriend's Instagram. His name is Rubén.
IG: rubngutierrz93
He's currently a nurse at Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella, formerly worked in Madrid. Several photos of the two of them there during the pandemic.
Also, Lejaragga hasn't been hiding the relationship. They've been together at least two years, and he's showed up regularly in pics and videos put up by Rubén's friends. Also, I think we can assume team Marbella FC already knew, because they held a 30th birthday party for teammate, Clyde Essomba, back in February, and Alberto and Rubén were there, cozy on the couch. It would be Ruben's 30th birthday the following week, so maybe that's why he was given one of the big candles as well. Video:

Lejarreta story barely causing a ripple internationally: an indication of how far the issue has come in football compared to only a few years ago, when it was news if a pub team player came out. There still hasn't been a really big football name to come out yet but when that happens normalisation will be very rapid.
by Anonymous | reply 305 | May 18, 2023 3:41 AM |
Lejarreta story doesn't cause any buzz because he is completely unknown and his club is very far from profesional leagues.
Of course the fact that his team seem to know his relationship and it's perfectly ok with that helps a lot.
We have a bunch of players of the french league who made a fuss about wearing a tshirt against homophobia so probably it won't be that easy for a top level player

by Anonymous | reply 311 | May 20, 2023 4:10 PM |
I'm 311, I'd like to add that he was always on the bench because of some muscular problems, he's a good footballer and i hope he will come back to Sampdoria. Sampdoria fans love him and he comes back to Genoa every now and then to see some Sampdoria football matches.
by Anonymous | reply 312 | May 20, 2023 7:25 PM |
R311/R312 ah, thanks, that's useful context.
Injuries or physical issues for young promising footballers really are cruel and heartbreaking things; many a career has been curtailed, set back or even ended years prematurely by them coming at exactly the wrong moment. And there's almost nothing you can do to eliminate completely the possibility of it happening, only be as careful and diligent as you can when training and recovering.
Sampdoria have always been a well-respected team in eyes of EPL fans. Graeme Souness brought them to our attention when he transferred and played there in the early 1990s. and grew to love the team. The club legend Gianluca Vialli's early untimely death from cancer a few months back really hit Gra quite hard--he used to tease Gianluca's joking physical vanity by calling him 'Handsome'.
by Anonymous | reply 313 | May 20, 2023 7:44 PM |
Unfortunately Sampdoria will be playing in Serie B (Italian Championship) next year. Poor Vialli :(
by Anonymous | reply 314 | May 20, 2023 11:18 PM |
In case you missed it, Graham Souness has been on a real journey on LGBT issues in recent years, even taking part in the Brighton Pride parade a few years ago, which apparently really changed his thinking. This is very much not something you would have expected him to do during his playing days.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | May 21, 2023 3:47 AM |

R316 So did Oscar Wilde.
by Anonymous | reply 317 | May 21, 2023 7:02 AM |
R315 yes, thanks for mentioning that. He’s an interesting character, Gra, isn’t he? Bit of an enigma.
He was a brute on the pitch and for a long time was a hard cold nut in his professional relationships, until a series of health scares took him several steps back from the game. Even then, though it would seem he softened and opened up with time, and his coworkers ‘outted’ him as a soft touch behind closed doors, he still kept up a part of his prickly and critical and punishing persona to give punditry. It seems he feels he has a lot to protect and guard about himself, and that perhaps led to the unfortunate outcome of him walling himself inside a bitter carapace.
What’s more, back in his playing days he was frequently the target of press ridicule and scorn for his flash party lifestyle & outré fashion choices, unusual for English footballers of the time and more associated with ‘continental’ (European) metrosexuality, which you can imagine went down well with the beery laddy hooligan crowds. Souness earned the moniker ‘Champagne Charlie’.
Imo he certainly does have a question mark around his sexuality and has struggled with it for a long time. If nothing else, the adoring yet fraught player-manager relationship he has shared with Jamie Redknapp, his back then-beautiful young protege at Liverpool F.C. and then later at the punditry desk, is a big clue. Jamie has always seemed to want Graeme’s affection and good opinion, but also resents it and him in certain measure. They have a strange relationship for two coworkers, and perhaps it’s a reach, but I’ve always wondered if Graeme had some less platonic feeling for Jamie, who played on those feelings to get what he wanted.

R324 He attended his funeral as well so the friendship seems a lot deeper than just a showbiz thing.
R318 He's got very emotional of late, like he's having some late life crisis or something?
R316 It was probably a marriage of convenience anyway. Ben White's getting married this summer and I don't believe that's genuine either. It's very similar to Dier's. It's like they've got the same PR representatives.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | May 23, 2023 12:03 AM |
R325 it likely is the same PR people, perhaps even agents. It's how players are kept under control.
Fwiw I do agree about Ben White. Sorry to stereotype, but there's just something sus about a man with a tramp stamp.
R.e. Graeme's had past health scares, and he's looked more frail in the last couple of years, so it does seem likely there's something amiss behind-the-scenes and it's taking an emotional toll. While I can't say I often enjoy his takes on the game or on society, still I'd be sad to see the old curmudgeon suddenly leave us. It's nice that he's around, still ticking.

Looking over the current Czech national squad, there’s quite a few lookers in there. Certainly a hotter team overall than mine (England & Wales).

R330 aww yes that must feel brutal, to have to watch your team from home or on the sidelines while they lift a trophy. Hopefully Jakub has someone or something else in his life besides football to take his mind off it.
Schick is cute and seems lovely irl btw. It’s just banter to call him horrible, it’s a compliment really (he’s good on the ball if he’s giving opponents a hard time). Wonder how he & Jakub spend downtime as mates?
by Anonymous | reply 331 | May 24, 2023 3:04 AM |
I know that it was a compliment, it's just something that came to my mind when I read your comment about Schick. I read somewhere long ago that they used to room together while playing for the national team and play Fifa (Jankto also started his own e-sport team, team Sampi).

Someone mentioned him in the closeted athletes thread, but no one said much else. Bryan Gil, a player from Tottenham Spurs on loan at Sevilla, is very likely dating Aaron, the guy on the right in this photo. Aaron, who is aaron11lr in Instagram, usually uploads photos of the two of them and they have lived together at least in Sevilla, Valencia and London. Well Paloma del Río, who is a very famous sports journalist in Spain (and came out as lesbian some years ago) worked in a documentary about sports and homosexuality to air during pride month. While there were athletes who collaborate like Marc Tur or Víctor Gutierrez, they didn't find anyone on soccer to speak.
She said they talked with a straight player who wanted to talk about it (he is an ally) but his clud refused to allow him.
Spain is a very gay friendly country but soccer enviroment is a different story, specially when the president of La liga and the president of the federation are linked to far right parties

Italian sports press is reporting that team Cagliari Calcio (Sardinia) is working to add Jankto. This is from the team's Instagram page: wearecagliaricalcio
It's in Italian - using the translate feature here:
[quote] According to "La Gazzetta dello Sport", Cagliari is reportedly working with the Spanish club Getafe for a possible return to Italy of midfielder JAKUB JANKTO, a player that Mister Claudio Ranieri knows well having trained him a few years ago at Sampdoria. The transfer formula should be that of the loan with an obligation to redeem, conditional on the salvation of Cagliari in the next season of Serie A.

The boy's gone wild! More shirtless, gun-flexing, whoremongering! Only days away from launching his OnlyFans!
by Anonymous | reply 359 | June 29, 2023 6:33 PM |
ha, interesting that he has a Brazil shirt.
by Anonymous | reply 360 | June 29, 2023 6:44 PM |
Jakub looks to have fallen on his feet and has signed with Italian team, Cagliari, who have just been promoted back to the top league: Serie A.
by Anonymous | reply 361 | July 15, 2023 5:00 PM |
It will be interesting to see how much homophobia he gets from the stands in Italy: more so than Czechia I would have thought.
by Anonymous | reply 362 | July 15, 2023 5:03 PM |
Good on him.
He's adorable, and his accented English is even more adorable!
by Anonymous | reply 363 | July 15, 2023 5:22 PM |
He got all the gringo and Cuban buss he could eat down in Miami, no doubt.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | July 15, 2023 5:36 PM |
I hope that his team takes turns accepting him until Jakub passes out on the locker room floor with a huge grin.

[quote][R369] A pseudo-gay who ended up playing safe by marrying a woman has the right to say how gay men should be? Fuck off.
Apparently, we shouldn't take the word of a pseudo-gay who played safe by marrying a woman, but we SHOULD take the word of the irony impaired.
by Anonymous | reply 371 | August 1, 2023 10:19 PM |
Technically, Lukas Ridgeston is Slovakian (born in Bratislava, which is part of Slovakia, not the Czech Republic).

LOL at the eunuch who doesn't believe he's gay.

[quote]Technically, Lukas Ridgeston is Slovakian (born in Bratislava, which is part of Slovakia, not the Czech Republic).
Well technically, Lukas Ridgeston was Czechoslovakian and was Czechoslovakian for the first 19 years of his life.
by Anonymous | reply 374 | August 1, 2023 10:54 PM |
The post said "Czech men" not Czechoslovakian men. And aren't we talking now? Plus, it looks like he's still in Bratislava, so why should he be a "standard bearer" for Czech men of today?

[quote] I thought the word “homosexual” was offensive. At least that’s according to my work policy.
r8 Since when? No, it's the objective word for same-sex attraction. "Gay" is offensive.
by Anonymous | reply 380 | August 21, 2023 8:42 PM |
Neither is offensive, we just sometimes use the old clinical word here on DL for playful purposes.
by Anonymous | reply 381 | August 21, 2023 8:46 PM |
OP here I used 'homosexual' as that was the word that Jakub used in his coming out statement. I also knew that it would rattle a few cages.
by Anonymous | reply 382 | August 21, 2023 8:50 PM |
r381 It's not the old clinical word. It's the word, the objective current dictionary description.
Don't mind me. I just hate the word "gay" even though I use it. It sounds like I'm a giggly man and I'm not. I'm quite serious. "Gay" really is a slur and it's designed by heterosexuals who don't want to take is seriously.
by Anonymous | reply 383 | August 21, 2023 9:14 PM |
Not all foreign countries and/or languages use the word "gay." .. You'll hear it in Czech, but "homosexuál" would probably be used in more formal news and press reports like what Jankto was doing when he came out. Similarly, the common expression for someone saying that they're straight there is to say, "hetero," so more formally that would be reported "heterosexuál."

Highlights from the match. They're calling it "unreal."
The score at 1:49 is something else, how it just curls in, right before hitting the goal post.

I might guess that the Czech twinks seen at R353 could be his type, and discretion can probably be bought with a nice, all-expenses paid trip to Miami.
by Anonymous | reply 407 | November 28, 2023 8:25 PM |
he was probably gonna be outed. that's why he came out himself
by Anonymous | reply 409 | December 7, 2023 7:58 PM |
It's still surprising that no Premier League or even Championship players have come out as gay since Justin Fashanu in 1990.
When Fashanu's niece was researching a documentary on her uncle, she confirmed several existing football players had contacted her to confirm they were gay and gave her reasons why they can't/don't want to come out. Obviously she wasn't going to betray their confidence, but I got the impression they'd been advised by their clubs not to come out.
It just seems strange that, considering homosexuality is generally accepted in the West in 2023, but many football players still don't want to be open. And it doesn't need to be a massive declaration; just an acknowledgement. It would help others who are also struggling with their sexuality.

by Anonymous | reply 413 | December 16, 2023 8:34 PM |
Yes, the Saudi scumbags can throw unbelievable boatloads of money at players, but how much attraction do those places have for single horny straight guys? No booze or bimbos? I would think only players with families at the tail ends of their careers would be interested.
by Anonymous | reply 414 | December 16, 2023 9:08 PM |
R414, I'm sure that the players live in a protected cocoon. When Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia, the government casually announced that there was no problem with him living with a woman to whom he was not married. (Sorry, Georgina! Maybe you'll get that ring some day).

When Jankto came out, it seemed like he was going to be more forthcoming about his personal life off the field, but we certainly don't get anything related to that. Now, he's even deleted most of his historical IG feed. The photos of those cute twinks he was with in Miami is gone. Even his original coming out statement is gone (though, of course it can be found elsewhere).
Is he leading a boring life, or does he just do hook-up apps and not want to look like a slut. 😄

Any Europeans/people with insight into how European football works have any idea of how Jakub is doing and whether or not he is likely to be kept by his club? Maybe that's why he's de-gaying his insta, he's trying to not give the club any excuse to cut/release him (or whatever they do over there)?
Come on, soccer. There has to be one bona-fide star or even superstar willing to take the plunge. Of course, I'm glad for Jankto, just like I was glad for Carl Nassib, but still no game-changer yet.
