Not everyone can be Diana Ross. Who are some artists from very successful groups who bombed as solo artists?
Artists from Groups Who Failed at Going Solo

Left Eye’s album “Supernova” which her label found to be so bad they only released it in Europe. It was a very bizarre album. The only songs that are good are at the end but the rest of the album was terrible.

Nicole Scherzinger

R5 I think Nicole Scherzinger owns this thread because her label tried and tried and tried. They tried to make her into the next Beyonce and they failed over and over again until they gave up.

JC was sabotaged but he didn’t help himself with that ugly hair and goatee for his solo project.

Grace Slick struggled hard as a solo artist.
But I do love this song. It would have probably been a hit for Cyndi Lauper but Grace was super old.

Kelly. She’s had some sleeper hits throughout the years but nothing really came of it.
There was a moment everyone thought she would be bigger than Beyonce in 2002 with “Stole” and “Dilemma”.
But Beyonce came out with “Dangerously In Love” the next year and it was a wrap.

Interscope tried SO hard to make Nicole a superstar. They pumped millions into her debut album “Her Name Is Nicole” and she couldn’t get a song off the ground. They spent like 2 years trying to get her a hit.
And it’s so bizarre because the Pussycat Dolls are pretty much just Nicole with background singers. That must have pissed her off so hard.

One surprising failure to my mind was James "J.T." Taylor of Kool & the Gang.
He'd been a constant presence on both R&B and pop radio for seven or eight years, scoring hit after hit. Kool & the Gang was still a considerable force when he jumped ship. And he had one of those instantly recognizable voices that people found very appealing. I thought his solo career was a sure thing, but it was dead on arrival. Even R&B radio pretty much ignored him.
He managed one R&B hit duet with Regina Belle ("All I Want is Forever" from the movie "Taps"), and one top 20 R&B solo hit, "Long Hot Summer Night". Every other single he released fell shy of the R&B top 50, and he never even grazed the lower reaches of the pop charts.
And without him, Kool & the Gang's career went straight down the shitter. So the whole thing was a fiasco from both sides of the split.

Jordan Knight waited too long to launch his solo career.
Barry Gibb tried to launch a solo career in the 80s but failed and the material was subpar to what he did with The Bee Gees and with some of the other artists he world with.
Dawn Robinson of En Vogue had tried to launch a solo career but it never took off.
Susanna Hoffa and Chynna Phillips come to mind as well.

Jermaine Jackson. Just never caught on. He scored a few charting songs, but one needs more than just a few. What were they? SERIOUS and DO WHAT YOU DID WHEN YOU DID WHAT YOU DID TO ME (what a title)? Whatever. Now, THIS is a jam! I like this one!

Everybody remembers Jody Watley outshining her former Shalamar bandmate Howard Hewett with their respective solo careers, but the 3rd Shalamar member, Jeffrey Daniel, also gave it a go, and big-time failed.
His first single, "AC/DC" has to be one of the most bizarre, uncommercial things I've ever heard. I give him credit for defying expectations and doing something very different than what he was known for , but who in their right mind ever thought this had any shot at being a hit?

Art Garfunkel. Paul Simon wrote all their great hits but going solo all Art had was his voice and a batch of poor songs. Paul Simon as a solo artist left Art behind in the dust.

Scott Weiland. Hated STP, but Weiland solo made them look like the fucking Beatles.

For me, the main issue with JC Chasez is that they tried to make him an unnecesary copy of Justin Timberlake, when it was more than evident that JC didn't have a ladies' man persona like JT had when he started solo. He had to be an antithesis of JT in terms of looks, music and persona in order to have a successful solo carreer.

Jermaine had a decent solo career. I wouldn't exactly call it a failure just because he didn't come close to Michael or Janet's success.
He did OK for himself. He was the 3rd most successful Jackson, so I guess that's something. (Plus, he banged Whitney...)
Jackie, Marlon and Randy all attempted solo careers, all of which were met with a resounding thud. They're the ones who really failed.

Fergie's first album was a pretty big success, but her followup flopped to high heavens. So I am going to count her since she was a one-album wonder.

R42 They came out at the same time. That's why I think JT gave up the booty and was casting couch. He probably did the illuminati ritual too. JC was demonstrably sexier and the better vocalist.
With that being said Cry Me a River is one of my favorite and one of the greatest songs of all time.

I actually liked Kelly Rowland's songs more than Beyonce. More electro dance and club thumpers. She was just unfortunately stuck (and always will be) in the Queen Bey's shadow. But I like her music more.

David Ruffin of the temptations could’ve been a superstar but was too caught up with drugs to stay with making a go of it as a solo artist. “Walk away from love” is a great song.
Another temptation Eddie Kendricks had two massive hits in 73/74 with keep on truckin and boogie down but his subsequent material fell short and he wasn’t ambitious about a maintaining a solo career and seemed content with being in the temptations.

R55 ^ Martha Reeves. She had one of the best voices at Motown and did very well as Martha And The Vandellas. Embarking on a solo career, her album was produced by the great Richard Perry - but it failed commercially and critically and had no hit singles to fuel it. Lo, these many years later (she is now 81) she does club dates as Martha Reeves And The Vandellas.
