Name TV Show/Movies With Characters That Were So Unimportant That They Should Have Been Omitted

The Partridge Family - The two youngest kids Tracy and Chris Partridge- they were not much more than props.

Poltergeist (1982) the teenager played by Dominique Dunn- her part could have been easily written out- she did not really belong in that movie at all.

by Anonymousreply 202February 16, 2023 9:14 PM

Tar, the kid

by Anonymousreply 1February 9, 2023 4:28 PM

I just remembered- in Back To The Future- it was downright eccentric to have Wendi Jo Sperber and Marc McClure as the sister and brother of Michael J Fox. I always like Wendi but maybe it was part of the oddness of the whole movie.

by Anonymousreply 2February 9, 2023 4:31 PM

Ritchie Cunningham's brother Chuck.

by Anonymousreply 3February 9, 2023 4:31 PM

R3- They eventually came to their senses and eliminated a character that no one missed at all.

by Anonymousreply 4February 9, 2023 4:33 PM

Will and Grace in Will & Grace

The show should have been called Jack & Karen

by Anonymousreply 5February 9, 2023 4:35 PM

Carrie Ingalls from LHOTP. Did the twins who played her ever deliver more than a few monosyllables as lines?

by Anonymousreply 6February 9, 2023 4:37 PM

R6- That's another good one. She was basically a prop like Tiger on The Brady Bunch.

by Anonymousreply 7February 9, 2023 4:47 PM

Liam in SHAMELESS.

Well, the U.S. version. That's the only one I've seen. At least until Season 5. That's when I stopped watching. Did he become important after that?

He was just like a prop that everyone carried around. Even when he was past toddler age. He never cried or said much, which is unusual for a small child.

And why make him black? Was he just a token black character? It was so contrived how he was fully black but still the bio kid of Frank and Monica. Supposedly Frank's grandmother had an affair with a black musician, producing Frank's father, who apparently came out looking all white. Then the black genes skipped Frank, too, and Liam got it all. 🙄

Little Ricky

by Anonymousreply 9February 9, 2023 5:04 PM

Zeppo Marx

by Anonymousreply 10February 9, 2023 5:07 PM

TJ on Roseanne- the original show

by Anonymousreply 11February 10, 2023 12:47 AM

It was DJ, OP

by Anonymousreply 12February 10, 2023 1:34 AM

Nancy on Family. We would have been just fine without THAT one.

by Anonymousreply 13February 10, 2023 1:35 AM

R13- Nancy's son was a prop and had no personality at all even in the last season.

by Anonymousreply 14February 10, 2023 1:41 AM

John (Randall Carver) on "Taxi."

by Anonymousreply 15February 10, 2023 1:58 AM

[quote] They eventually came to their senses and eliminated a character that no one missed at all.

You could say that about another family I can think of...

by Anonymousreply 16February 10, 2023 2:01 AM

Chevy Chase on Saturday Night Live

by Anonymousreply 17February 10, 2023 2:07 AM

Shia Labeouf in Constantine (2005). I've seen this movie countless times and I'm always surprised to see him. He is 100% forgettable and extraneous to the plot.

by Anonymousreply 18February 10, 2023 3:33 AM

Jason Avery and Brian Cunningham on Knots Landing.

by Anonymousreply 19February 10, 2023 3:39 AM

[quote]he two youngest kids Tracy and Chris Partridge- they were not much more than props.

Hey, fuck off! We're useful on a set, and often nice to look at as well!

by Anonymousreply 20February 10, 2023 3:56 AM

The middle daughter played by Angela Cartwright in "Lost in Space."

by Anonymousreply 21February 10, 2023 4:32 AM

R17 is Bill Murray.

by Anonymousreply 22February 10, 2023 4:50 AM

Actually, R21, Angela Cartwright's Penny was often involved in storylines. Did you mean Judy, played by Marta Kristen, who was useless.

by Anonymousreply 23February 10, 2023 5:06 AM

It’s the Dana Troll, rearing its ugly head again. Dana is not a superfluous character, Dana Troll.

by Anonymousreply 24February 10, 2023 5:13 AM

R23- I agree

The ONLY thing she was good at was looking pretty and having the WELL HUNG Mark Goddard console her when she was scared just like Ann Romano on ODAAT-

David HOLD ME

by Anonymousreply 25February 10, 2023 5:17 AM

[R23] No no no. Judy Robinson was necessary to keep hunky Major Don West from getting it on with hunky Professor Robinson because we know that his wife Maureen wasn’t giving him any. And Dr Smith being a bossy bottom would have wanted to be the meat in their sandwich!!

by Anonymousreply 26February 10, 2023 5:18 AM

Seven on Married With Children

by Anonymousreply 27February 10, 2023 5:19 AM

R25, Mark Goddard lives in my town here in Massachusetts. Is he really well hung?

by Anonymousreply 28February 10, 2023 5:19 AM

Penny had a lot of storylines in season one (remember that weird pet monkey). But once the series became the Will/Dr. Smith/Robot show, everybody else became an afterthought.

by Anonymousreply 29February 10, 2023 5:31 AM

The black guy who was in the opening credits of Gilmore Girls. I believe he was a hotel clerk at Lorelai's hotel. I don't recall him having any significant involvement in a storyline. Also two of Rory's roommates at Yale were just props.

by Anonymousreply 30February 10, 2023 5:43 AM

Little Ricky figure into the plot of several episodes of I Love Lucy. He was not extraneous or expendable.

by Anonymousreply 31February 10, 2023 5:50 AM

Patty Petersen on “The Donna Reed Show”.

by Anonymousreply 32February 10, 2023 5:54 AM

Those guys in the background on the Mary Tyler Moore show.

by Anonymousreply 33February 10, 2023 5:57 AM

About 3/4 of the sisters on "Eight is Enough." I had so much trouble differentiating among them except for Joanie and the gravelly voiced eldest one.

by Anonymousreply 34February 10, 2023 6:01 AM

[quote]The Partridge Family - The two youngest kids Tracy and Chris Partridge- they were not much more than props.

You wouldn't say that if you ever heard Tracy's blistering tambourine solos.

by Anonymousreply 35February 10, 2023 6:02 AM

R5 totally disagree. A little of them went a long way and they were much better as supporting characters.

by Anonymousreply 36February 10, 2023 6:03 AM

R34- MUCH more so than that show the first season of The Fact Of Life

BOY oh BOY were most of those girls SUPERFLOUS

by Anonymousreply 37February 10, 2023 7:01 AM

Coco from "Golden Girls"!!! Oh, wait. He was omitted.

by Anonymousreply 38February 10, 2023 7:24 AM

Anthony Hopkins in The Son (2022). His long scene added nothing of value to the film, just extended the badness of the film to run on for longer than it needed to.

by Anonymousreply 39February 10, 2023 7:40 AM

The parents of Brenda and Brandon on BH 90210. The producers eventually realized, so they were eliminated.

by Anonymousreply 40February 10, 2023 7:47 AM

Incidentally, who was the cute blonde guy? He often caught my eye.

by Anonymousreply 46February 10, 2023 10:38 AM

R45 No way! Potsie was eye candy. I thought he was the cutest of them all, with Richie being second.

by Anonymousreply 47February 10, 2023 10:41 AM

R46, this is the man you’re referring to - J Benjamin Chulay. His character’s name was Pete. The actor’s father was the assistant director on the show.

by Anonymousreply 49February 10, 2023 11:12 AM

R48 - He looks like Toby Jones.

by Anonymousreply 50February 10, 2023 11:13 AM

R48 Thanks!

I see he has worked mainly as an editor. I'm glad to hear that. For the longest time, I felt bad for him. 😂 I figured he was an aspiring actor who didn't succeed in the business, because I didn't see him in anything else. But since his father was the assistant director, he most likely did it as a favor to his dad and probably was not comfortable being in front of the camera.

by Anonymousreply 51February 10, 2023 11:42 AM

50 replies and no mention of Tina Yothers' Jennifer Keaton, who after going through one of the grisliest puberties ever recorded, spent the last five seasons saying, "I'll go check on Andy" and then exiting the kitchen.

by Anonymousreply 52February 10, 2023 7:17 PM

Ed McMahon

by Anonymousreply 53February 10, 2023 7:42 PM

Little Ricky was there as the result of Lucille Ball getting pregnant and having her pregnancy written into the show. If she hadn't gotten pregnant, Lucy Recardo wouldn't have, and Little Ricky wouldn't have been there. As it was, they sometimes made good use of the character, but they had little choice.

by Anonymousreply 54February 10, 2023 11:07 PM

[quote] spent the last five seasons saying, "I'll go check on Andy" and then exiting the kitchen.

LOL! So true.

by Anonymousreply 55February 10, 2023 11:34 PM

Currently, Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital. I don’t know why he’s still there.

by Anonymousreply 56February 10, 2023 11:37 PM

Winnie Freedman in Joanie Last he’s Chachi. There were enough untalented actors on that show without adding a fugly one.

by Anonymousreply 57February 11, 2023 12:08 AM

by Anonymousreply 59February 11, 2023 12:45 AM

Butterfly McQueen as Lottie in Mildred Pierce. I'm glad she's there but why she's there, I'm not sure.

by Anonymousreply 60February 11, 2023 12:45 AM

[quote]Joanie Last he’s Chachi

This is a great typo --> Joanie Last, He's Chachi.

by Anonymousreply 61February 11, 2023 1:09 AM

Every time I watch Mildred Pierce, I'm surprised that Butterfly McQueen is in it. You're right, R60: totally superfluous.

Vicki on The Love Boat was a baffling addition. First of all, adults always think kids want to watch other kids in movies and TV, but they don't. Kids want to identify with and pretend to be adults, who can actually do things. Secondly, The Love Boat's audience was already mostly kids and old people anyway - who else is home on Saturday night? So adding Vicki accomplished nothing.

by Anonymousreply 62February 11, 2023 1:12 AM

Jake and Henry on "Reba."

by Anonymousreply 63February 11, 2023 1:38 AM

Eight is Enough = Eight is TOO MUCH.

The Nicholas character was frippery. He was an irritating distraction. Tommy should've been the youngest, as a teenager.

Nancy was window dressing. Why was she there, other than being the pretty one? She washed her hair with a can of beer, her main character trait.

Joanie and Susan were redundant. Both were off beat. Joanie was the actress in Sacramento, CA. She should've been in LA or NYC. She wasn't needed.

David should've been eliminated. Again, what was his purpose, other than being the oldest sibling? He didn't look like the others.

Auntie V should've have been a permanent cast member. Janis Paige is a delightful actress.

Also, Abby's obsession about her car named "Gwendolyn", was over the top.

by Anonymousreply 64February 11, 2023 3:05 AM

Half the kids on The Waltons

by Anonymousreply 65February 11, 2023 3:12 AM

The older brother on Happy Days

by Anonymousreply 66February 11, 2023 3:20 AM

R60, Butterfly received no billing, either in the opening or closing credits.

And “Mildred Pierce” was six years after “GWTW”.

by Anonymousreply 67February 11, 2023 3:22 AM

The Brady Bunch:

Cindy: She was a lisping, cloying, annoying character with those stupid pig tails.

Bobby: He wasn't necessary. Eliminating him would've given more screen time for Jan and Marsha. Their interactions were hilarious.

I liked Alice; she was the best character. Ann B. Davis stole the show.

by Anonymousreply 68February 11, 2023 3:40 AM

R67 That's a shame, but many of the smaller-role actors in Mildred Pierce didn't get billing, including the actors who played Ted Forrester and his mother. Also, there are no closing credits in the film other than "The End". Here are the opening credits.

Sondra - The Cosby Show

by Anonymousreply 70February 11, 2023 3:45 AM

R64 Well, it was based on a book by journalist Tom Braden, and he had eight kids. Braden was later the co-host of CNN's Crossfire, with Pat Buchanan, where Braden (liberal) and Buchanan (conservative) debated various issues nightly.

by Anonymousreply 71February 11, 2023 3:46 AM

Mama Corleone (Morgana King) was basically a prop. In a nearly 3h film I don't remember her saying a thing. I don't think she had any scenes with Brando and unless I'm mistaken, she isn't in the film after the first 1h hour. She's wallpaper.

by Anonymousreply 72February 11, 2023 3:49 AM

[quote] 50 replies and no mention of Tina Yothers' Jennifer Keaton, who after going through one of the grisliest puberties ever recorded, spent the last five seasons saying, "I'll go check on Andy" and then exiting the kitchen.

Someone else mentioned Victoria Jackson on SNL, and mostly I agree. But one of the funniest things SNL ever did was a "Family Ties" parody where Jackson played the Tina Yothers character, and every two minutes or so the camera would cut to her on the edge of the action, contributing an occasional and simple "Yeah..." to the discussion of the four other family members' discussion.

by Anonymousreply 73February 11, 2023 3:52 AM

Dominique D was still memorable in Poltergeist. I read that her character was initially going to be the focal point of the plot . And then the writers changed it to Carol Ann . Dominique was talented and very well liked bycast and crew

by Anonymousreply 74February 11, 2023 3:53 AM

The parents on Beverly Hills 90210 were necessary on a show that was about a bunch of 16 year olds. Also they were all rather interesting.

by Anonymousreply 75February 11, 2023 3:57 AM

Why did Ann Marie not have any long term girlfriends?

by Anonymousreply 76February 11, 2023 3:58 AM

Brian Austin Green - 90210

[Quote] Dominique D was still memorable in Poltergeist.

I actually forgot Dominque Done was in Poltergeist while I was watching it! By the time she returns to the film and screams WHAT'S HAPPENING!!! I realized that I had forgotten about the 3rd child. She's completely unnecessary and has no bearing on the plot whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 78February 11, 2023 4:04 AM

Eight Is Enough had 8 kids because they wanted to out-do the Brady Bunch.

R68, IMO, Bobby was the funniest Brady. Peter was probably more expendable.

by Anonymousreply 79February 11, 2023 4:05 AM

Sam the butcher on The Brady Bunch. Was he really giving Alice his meat? Baloney!

by Anonymousreply 80February 11, 2023 4:09 AM

R71, yes, you're correct. I think it would've been a better show with less characters.

by Anonymousreply 81February 11, 2023 4:09 AM

"Peter was probably more expendable."

But without Peter we never would have gotten "Porkchops and applesauce"

by Anonymousreply 82February 11, 2023 4:18 AM

R69, I wondered why old Hollywood didn't grant credit to actors in small roles. It was positively cruel, especially to those who were famous.

Michael Myers in Halloween Ends

If David Gordon Green wanted to pull another Season of the Witch situation, he should've just killed Michael at the beginning of the movie and been done with it.

by Anonymousreply 98February 11, 2023 5:35 AM

Ross was needed on the Patty Duke show, who else would Patty’s boyfriend Richard been able to jerk off with?

by Anonymousreply 99February 11, 2023 5:35 AM

Didn’t Family Matters basically eliminate the younger daughter midway through its run? That is hardcore. Family Ties should have done that with Jennifer. She was painful to watch in her teen years.

I disagree about Little Ricky and Eight is Enough sisters. Everyone Loves Raymond could’ve eliminated the kids, they were hardly seen. But it’s an Eight is Enough situation where the family dynamic is premise of the show. Carrie on Little House I agree with, she contributed nothing to show.

by Anonymousreply 100February 11, 2023 5:50 AM

Adam on Bewitched.

by Anonymousreply 101February 11, 2023 5:52 AM

R100, yes, they giot rid of one daughter. I think shec went on to do porn and maybe died?

The Torkelsons was an NBC sitcom that got retooled and suddenly the single mother of five became a single mother of three.

by Anonymousreply 102February 11, 2023 6:04 AM

Ruby Dee in the 2007 film AMERICAN GANGSTER, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. She's got like 5 minutes of screen time tops in a 2 1/2 hour movie. Her short scenes usually consist of admonishing Denzel's character, her son, but nothing showy like Beatrice Straight in NETWORK. They could be edited out and the film would lose nothing. I was surprised to learn that she was nominated for an Oscar and was considered a close competitor to eventual winner Tilda Swinton in MICHAEL CLAYTON. It really is just a glorified cameo đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

Silvana Mangano as Cosima von BĂŒlow in Ludwig. Visconti is just being a mean tease.

by Anonymousreply 108February 11, 2023 12:25 PM

As much as Carrie was not exactly a powerhouse of a child actor, she was miles above Grace, who I am not sure ever got out of her highchair even though she was probably about 6 by the time the series ended. Obviously, they were on the show because they existed in real life/the books. That does not excuse all of the adopted kids who showed up later, none of them really worked except Albert.

I did not really mind Jennifer on Family Ties. I could have done without Andy who was the classic overly cute and precocious bowl cut kid of the 70's and 80's. Speaking of bowl cut .. Cousin Oliver. Although as late addition kids goes, he really was not that obnoxious, but he also did not really add anything.

The show was never high art and was past its expiration at the time, but Billie and her sister on the last season of Charmed. Who knew that was not going to be the end of Cuoco's career.

by Anonymousreply 109February 11, 2023 1:28 PM

R81 Except the whole selling point and premise of the show was that it was a big family with eight children. That was the family dynamic. No one was interested in a show called Five Is Enough.

Valerie on the Hogan Family

by Anonymousreply 112February 11, 2023 1:42 PM

Becky on Full House. It seems odd that they decided to tie down the show heart throb so early in the series. She also seemed to be a better fit for Danny. She certainly was not added for her expert comic timing.

Captain Steubing on The Love Boat. On most episodes, he’d show up for the boarding and farewells, and you’d never see his pompous face again. Gavin McLeod won the lottery getting cast on that show.

by Anonymousreply 115February 11, 2023 1:58 PM

R83 In the 1930s and early 40s studios often did credit all the actors, particularly 20th Century-Fox which had enormous closing credits. If I'm not mistaken I think during the 40s there was a need to use less film (during the war?) and by making the closing credits shorter or nonexistent, they could eliminate several hundred feet of film. It was also the case that people who asked for (or whose agents asked for) credit - in the opening titles, for ex., could get credit. I remember an interview once where a producer was asked why an actor wasn't credited and he said, "she could have been if she had asked for it."

Small kids in TV shows often serve a purpose by affecting the way the main characters have to live their lives and throwing light on the characters of those in the main roles. The cute little ‘un in Medium springs to mind.

R8 That was one of the most ridiculous elements when they decided to make Frank the bio father after all. I hate when good shows do outstanding shit that defies realism like that. I guess they were short on ideas that season.

[quote]The Partridge Family - The two youngest kids Tracy and Chris Partridge- they were not much more than props.

I believe those two kids, both under ten at the time the show aired, were really to make Shirley Jones seem a bit younger than she was (she was in her late 30s when TPF was airing). When she had scenes with David Cassidy and Susan Dey, she looked older than late 30s (she looked more mid-40s, which was age appropriate for those two actors / characters). With the two little ones she looked mid-30s. With Danny Bonaduce, she looked late 30s most of the time.

R158: Many years ago, I was an event-planner at place that hosted a number of tv show wrap parties. Carsey-Werner productions really seemed to like us, and we hosted several their shows -- 3rd Rock (twice), That 70s Show, Grounded for Life....and Grace Under Fire's last season wrap party. GUF had already been cancelled, before the wrap party. Those parties are always a little weird/bittersweet....but the CHILL that descended over that party when Brett Butler arrived (alone) was palpable & obvious. I think everyone was a little was surprised that she showed up, given her very public problems with the producers...and no one seemed to want to speak to her. There's always a certain amount of schmoozing with the producers & writers at these things, when the star of the show arrives....nope, not this time! She sat in the bar alone, watching the rank & file crew sing Karaoke. Even they didn't want to speak to her.

R64. “Auntie V should've have been a permanent cast member. Janis Paige is a delightful actress.”

I totally agree. I also think that Dianne Kay gave Nancy Charm and she had little control Over the writers who were ALL straight men .

Interesting that most are tv actors as shows evolve over the years and can shed the less involving actors. Movie characters are like Chekhov’s gun — once introduced you have to do something with it. Otherwise, what’s the point? Think of the best example of this — Some Like It Hot. Every single person who has a line, has a purpose.

I always thought that Mrs. Trumbull on I Love Lucy was Ball trying to find a spot for an old actress who otherwise had little chance of continued employment. There is no reason to make her an old widow. Except to throw Lucy a birthday party.

by Anonymousreply 163February 11, 2023 11:33 PM

[quote] I always thought that Mrs. Trumbull on I Love Lucy was Ball trying to find a spot for an old actress who otherwise had little chance of continued employment.

They already did that with William Frawley.

And Mrs. Trumbull had to be available day or night to babysit Little Ricky. She was the plot device that allowed Lucy & Ethel to run off on some comic capers and eventually she became Manageress of the building when they up and moved to Connecticut.

And poor Mrs. Trumbull having to live out her days in that shabby building, battling those cold NYC winters and climbing all those stairs, first from the sidewalk to the foyer and then up to her attic apartment.

So many characters on every Star Trek series.

Most of the beloved characters from the original series were not memorably written, but were made memorable solely because they were filled by intelligent and charismatic actors like Nichelle Nichols. (Before you disagree, let me remind you that on the original series Uhura was not even given a first name, and Nichols had to invent one for her--it was not revealed onscreen until the movies).

[Quote] The parents of Brenda and Brandon on BH 90210. The producers eventually realized, so they were eliminated.

Yes, when the kids were in college. One of the biggest storylines was Jim not wanting Dylan and Brenda together in the high school years and provided plenty of drama.

[quote] Vincent Gardenia and Betty Garrett on “All in the Family”. What did they add to the show?

As every other character, they were a foil for Archie.

But Lear also wanted to disrupt stereotypical gender roles so he was the cook in the family and she was the mechanical/fix-it one. Unfortunately, it came across more as a gay man and a lesbian in a marriage of convenience.

And Betty Garrett was probably thinking her character was not needed because when she got the chance she bolted for Laverne & Shirley, where she was more effectively used and was given more opportunity to sing and dance.

by Anonymousreply 190February 12, 2023 2:21 PM

I agree about the Lorenzos. I thought at the time (I was a teenager) that they just didn't seem to fit, on the show. Everything on All In The Family had worked until then, but they were a miscalculation. I had the impression Norman Lear just wanted to cast Vincent Gardenia because he liked him. (And Sada Thompson, I guess - who taped one unaired show and was then replaced by Betty Garrett. 'Sada had too much genuine class and didn`t yell loud enough for a Norman Lear show.' said one staffer.)

by Anonymousreply 191February 12, 2023 2:54 PM

R191, Vincent and Sada had both recently experienced successes on Broadway, Prisoner of Second Avenue and Twigs.

Norman Lear often turned to Broadway for casting.
