Name TV Show/Movies With Characters That Were So Unimportant That They Should Have Been Omitted
The Partridge Family - The two youngest kids Tracy and Chris Partridge- they were not much more than props.
Poltergeist (1982) the teenager played by Dominique Dunn- her part could have been easily written out- she did not really belong in that movie at all.

I just remembered- in Back To The Future- it was downright eccentric to have Wendi Jo Sperber and Marc McClure as the sister and brother of Michael J Fox. I always like Wendi but maybe it was part of the oddness of the whole movie.

Liam in SHAMELESS.
Well, the U.S. version. That's the only one I've seen. At least until Season 5. That's when I stopped watching. Did he become important after that?
He was just like a prop that everyone carried around. Even when he was past toddler age. He never cried or said much, which is unusual for a small child.
And why make him black? Was he just a token black character? It was so contrived how he was fully black but still the bio kid of Frank and Monica. Supposedly Frank's grandmother had an affair with a black musician, producing Frank's father, who apparently came out looking all white. Then the black genes skipped Frank, too, and Liam got it all. đ

Little Ricky was there as the result of Lucille Ball getting pregnant and having her pregnancy written into the show. If she hadn't gotten pregnant, Lucy Recardo wouldn't have, and Little Ricky wouldn't have been there. As it was, they sometimes made good use of the character, but they had little choice.

Every time I watch Mildred Pierce, I'm surprised that Butterfly McQueen is in it. You're right, R60: totally superfluous.
Vicki on The Love Boat was a baffling addition. First of all, adults always think kids want to watch other kids in movies and TV, but they don't. Kids want to identify with and pretend to be adults, who can actually do things. Secondly, The Love Boat's audience was already mostly kids and old people anyway - who else is home on Saturday night? So adding Vicki accomplished nothing.

Eight is Enough = Eight is TOO MUCH.
The Nicholas character was frippery. He was an irritating distraction. Tommy should've been the youngest, as a teenager.
Nancy was window dressing. Why was she there, other than being the pretty one? She washed her hair with a can of beer, her main character trait.
Joanie and Susan were redundant. Both were off beat. Joanie was the actress in Sacramento, CA. She should've been in LA or NYC. She wasn't needed.
David should've been eliminated. Again, what was his purpose, other than being the oldest sibling? He didn't look like the others.
Auntie V should've have been a permanent cast member. Janis Paige is a delightful actress.
Also, Abby's obsession about her car named "Gwendolyn", was over the top.

The Brady Bunch:

Someone else mentioned Victoria Jackson on SNL, and mostly I agree. But one of the funniest things SNL ever did was a "Family Ties" parody where Jackson played the Tina Yothers character, and every two minutes or so the camera would cut to her on the edge of the action, contributing an occasional and simple "Yeah..." to the discussion of the four other family members' discussion.

Didnât Family Matters basically eliminate the younger daughter midway through its run? That is hardcore. Family Ties should have done that with Jennifer. She was painful to watch in her teen years.
I disagree about Little Ricky and Eight is Enough sisters. Everyone Loves Raymond couldâve eliminated the kids, they were hardly seen. But itâs an Eight is Enough situation where the family dynamic is premise of the show. Carrie on Little House I agree with, she contributed nothing to show.

Ruby Dee in the 2007 film AMERICAN GANGSTER, starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. She's got like 5 minutes of screen time tops in a 2 1/2 hour movie. Her short scenes usually consist of admonishing Denzel's character, her son, but nothing showy like Beatrice Straight in NETWORK. They could be edited out and the film would lose nothing. I was surprised to learn that she was nominated for an Oscar and was considered a close competitor to eventual winner Tilda Swinton in MICHAEL CLAYTON. It really is just a glorified cameo đ€·ââïž

As much as Carrie was not exactly a powerhouse of a child actor, she was miles above Grace, who I am not sure ever got out of her highchair even though she was probably about 6 by the time the series ended. Obviously, they were on the show because they existed in real life/the books. That does not excuse all of the adopted kids who showed up later, none of them really worked except Albert.
I did not really mind Jennifer on Family Ties. I could have done without Andy who was the classic overly cute and precocious bowl cut kid of the 70's and 80's. Speaking of bowl cut .. Cousin Oliver. Although as late addition kids goes, he really was not that obnoxious, but he also did not really add anything.

R83 In the 1930s and early 40s studios often did credit all the actors, particularly 20th Century-Fox which had enormous closing credits. If I'm not mistaken I think during the 40s there was a need to use less film (during the war?) and by making the closing credits shorter or nonexistent, they could eliminate several hundred feet of film. It was also the case that people who asked for (or whose agents asked for) credit - in the opening titles, for ex., could get credit. I remember an interview once where a producer was asked why an actor wasn't credited and he said, "she could have been if she had asked for it."

I believe those two kids, both under ten at the time the show aired, were really to make Shirley Jones seem a bit younger than she was (she was in her late 30s when TPF was airing). When she had scenes with David Cassidy and Susan Dey, she looked older than late 30s (she looked more mid-40s, which was age appropriate for those two actors / characters). With the two little ones she looked mid-30s. With Danny Bonaduce, she looked late 30s most of the time.

R158: Many years ago, I was an event-planner at place that hosted a number of tv show wrap parties. Carsey-Werner productions really seemed to like us, and we hosted several their shows -- 3rd Rock (twice), That 70s Show, Grounded for Life....and Grace Under Fire's last season wrap party. GUF had already been cancelled, before the wrap party. Those parties are always a little weird/bittersweet....but the CHILL that descended over that party when Brett Butler arrived (alone) was palpable & obvious. I think everyone was a little was surprised that she showed up, given her very public problems with the producers...and no one seemed to want to speak to her. There's always a certain amount of schmoozing with the producers & writers at these things, when the star of the show arrives....nope, not this time! She sat in the bar alone, watching the rank & file crew sing Karaoke. Even they didn't want to speak to her.

Interesting that most are tv actors as shows evolve over the years and can shed the less involving actors. Movie characters are like Chekhovâs gun â once introduced you have to do something with it. Otherwise, whatâs the point? Think of the best example of this â Some Like It Hot. Every single person who has a line, has a purpose.
I always thought that Mrs. Trumbull on I Love Lucy was Ball trying to find a spot for an old actress who otherwise had little chance of continued employment. There is no reason to make her an old widow. Except to throw Lucy a birthday party.

They already did that with William Frawley.
And Mrs. Trumbull had to be available day or night to babysit Little Ricky. She was the plot device that allowed Lucy & Ethel to run off on some comic capers and eventually she became Manageress of the building when they up and moved to Connecticut.
And poor Mrs. Trumbull having to live out her days in that shabby building, battling those cold NYC winters and climbing all those stairs, first from the sidewalk to the foyer and then up to her attic apartment.

So many characters on every Star Trek series.
Most of the beloved characters from the original series were not memorably written, but were made memorable solely because they were filled by intelligent and charismatic actors like Nichelle Nichols. (Before you disagree, let me remind you that on the original series Uhura was not even given a first name, and Nichols had to invent one for her--it was not revealed onscreen until the movies).

[Quote] The parents of Brenda and Brandon on BH 90210. The producers eventually realized, so they were eliminated.
Yes, when the kids were in college. One of the biggest storylines was Jim not wanting Dylan and Brenda together in the high school years and provided plenty of drama.

[quote] Vincent Gardenia and Betty Garrett on âAll in the Familyâ. What did they add to the show?
As every other character, they were a foil for Archie.
But Lear also wanted to disrupt stereotypical gender roles so he was the cook in the family and she was the mechanical/fix-it one. Unfortunately, it came across more as a gay man and a lesbian in a marriage of convenience.
And Betty Garrett was probably thinking her character was not needed because when she got the chance she bolted for Laverne & Shirley, where she was more effectively used and was given more opportunity to sing and dance.

I agree about the Lorenzos. I thought at the time (I was a teenager) that they just didn't seem to fit, on the show. Everything on All In The Family had worked until then, but they were a miscalculation. I had the impression Norman Lear just wanted to cast Vincent Gardenia because he liked him. (And Sada Thompson, I guess - who taped one unaired show and was then replaced by Betty Garrett. 'Sada had too much genuine class and didn`t yell loud enough for a Norman Lear show.' said one staffer.)
