They will never be able to maintain this quality into a season two.
POKER FACE is a fucking masterpiece

Ain’t nobody gonna see that. Too many streaming platforms.

When I initially read the thread title, I thought this was gonna be a Gaga thread.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 2, 2023 2:51 PM |
I agree. It's shockingly good. I think the accidental detective thing works better in a hour long anthology show than in a 2+ hour movie like Knives Out.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 2, 2023 4:23 PM |
Excellent!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 5, 2023 5:50 AM |
For some reason I found the heavy metal episode the funniest of them all.
Though Judith Light and S. Epatha were both fantastic as the elderly radicalized '70s domestic terrorists now domestically terrorizing their nursing home.
Lots of major stars are probably wangling to get into Season 2. They're all clearly having fun.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 5, 2023 6:07 AM |
How many episodes in S1?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 5, 2023 6:19 AM |
The heavy metal one with Chloe Sevigny is the best so far although I agree that Judith Light and S Epatha were great in the nursing home. I didn’t like it as well because for once it could’ve been written to show they were justified in killing the narc former lover. I guess that’s too “safe”.

R6, 10 total

Holy shit, Ellen Barkin is in episode 6, and is looking old (nothing wrong with getting old, just wasn’t expecting it)
Love this show! Hope it gets picked up for season 2

She was clearly having a ball in the part, which made it worth watching. But she and Tim Meadows had zero chemistry, and the plot was the weakest yet.

This episode kinda freaked me out. I was expecting to cheer these old radicals and I ended up hating them. Had a very Manson vibe of these unrepentant killers.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 11, 2023 1:43 AM |
R1 it is getting a lot of positive word of mouth. As it should.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 11, 2023 1:44 AM |
Why would the quality degrade in season 2? It's not impossible to maintain a smart 'detective' series. It might be smart if they don't try to go past a few seasons and just pop in with a movie every now and then.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 11, 2023 2:12 AM |
Tim Meadows is gay, not that it should matter but yes zero chemistry and probably the weakest of all the episodes. It took me a very long time to get into the 1st episode of Poker Face because there was a strange edited glitch. My boyfriend caught it too. Plus I liked Russian Doll better. But after watching the metal episode, I'm hooked.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 11, 2023 2:22 AM |
It's possible, Colombo had 13 seasons.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 11, 2023 4:04 AM |
Crazy about “Poker Face.” While this latest episode was the weakest of the six so far, it did have wit — that terrible play was a funny mashup of Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller. And I loved that after the stage manager talked about how he loved his job because at every performance someone in the audience discovered a love for theater when they were genuinely moved, it actually happened for Lionne’s character. Nice touch.
I hated “Columbo” largely because ai loathed Peter Falk’s schtick. “Columbo” also bloated at 90 minutes. Lionne is wonderful, modern day Joan Blondell.
I gather the series takes a different turn next episode with the point of view changing or something.

Just caught the first 2 episodes last night. Do we ever find out what the maid saw? I'm guessing child porn
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 21, 2023 3:07 PM |
I really love it. My only suggestion for Season 2 would be to bring some crime/mystery novelists into the writing room, as the actual crimes are the weakest part of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 22, 2023 11:39 PM |
One of the two best shows currently streaming. The other is Cunk on Britain.
Could never get into Russian Doll so wasn't expecting to like this but it's brilliant.
Loved the BBQ show and the pitmaster who watched Okja and decided to become a vegan.

I found the Nick Nolte episode really moving, which surprised me because I usually can't stand him. Something about these two very similar people -- Lyonne, who I love, brought out a quality in him I hadn't appreciated before. A gruff kindness? When it comes down to it this show is incredibly sweet - her easiness in making friends, and that the show's message is all about being honest. How she values honesty in everyone, no matter what kind of people they are otherwise. It's a balm in such a volatile world.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 27, 2023 9:25 PM |
Why can't this be on Netflix? Damn.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 27, 2023 9:27 PM |
Damn, we had to subscribe to Peacock to add to the dozen other fucking streaming services we pay for. But it was worth it. It's that good. Best comedy show ever along with Cunk on Earth.
I tried to watch Lyonne in Russian Doll but couldn't get into it. Is it really that good?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 3, 2023 7:46 PM |
The first season of Russian Doll really is that good. The second season got mixed reviews.

Watching last night reminded me: whatever happened to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career? He was supposed to be the next big thing and disappeared.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 3, 2023 7:54 PM |
R26 He can't act.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 4, 2023 4:04 AM |
r26 He's been slowly flaming out since the early 2010s. The fact that he lives in Wellington can't help his career.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 4, 2023 5:36 AM |
Actually, I thought Joseph Gordon-Levitt gave a pretty decent performance in the latest episode. He played a very convincing psychopathic narcissistic douche bro.
Also, I am confused about Charlie’s mountain man boyfriend. Where the fuck did he go?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 4, 2023 7:36 PM |
I think the joke was she was all happy and satisfied and saying she was gonna stay there forever, and then they cut ahead six months or however long it was and it had all gone to hell - they clearly broke up in that interim and she was just trying to get out of town again
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 4, 2023 7:45 PM |
I love this show! Excellent. The weakest one by a long shot is the one with Ellen Barkin. It was written as if the author had never set foot in a theater, only heard about it.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 5, 2023 10:24 PM |
I was the one who was getting tired of the premise after episode 5.
9 was a great change of pace! Prob one of my favorite episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 6, 2023 6:20 AM |
I love it. I hope it runs and runs. I can see it becoming a long running series. Btw I'm watching it on hurawatch.cc, if that helps anyone who doesn't want to get Peacock. Works fine.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 6, 2023 6:27 AM |
I wish they’d do a longer episode at least once a season. I love the episodes of Columbo where there’s about an hour of Columbo doing his shtick.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 6, 2023 7:13 AM |
R30. That was exactly how I had read it.
That's what happens when you go break your own rule about second locations.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 6, 2023 7:36 AM |
its popular but the idea requires a lot of buy in from the audience. She is on the run so always 1) in a new location, 2) a murder happens 3) only AFTER she has gotten to know all the characters involved and 4) then she solves the crime and moves on.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 6, 2023 8:16 AM |
1) It's not a documentary R36.
2) Episode 9 demonstrated that they can change up the formula.
3) The show is not about the mystery, anyway. Go watch reruns of "Murder, She Wrote" for that.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 6, 2023 9:18 PM |
Love it but I could solve it before she gets on screen. The heavy metal episode was my favorite. I loathe Ellen Barkin IRL so seeing that cuntrag get what’s coming to her on the show was worth it even if she had about as much sexual chemistry with Tim (hysterical) Meadows as Britney does with sanity. Russian Doll loved until I hated it , it started strong but got annoyingly repetitive and the worst was season 2.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 7, 2023 4:35 AM |
Here's the other, longer thread for the show, if anyone's interested.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 7, 2023 4:51 AM |
R38. Of course you can solve it. Almost every episode shows you the murder as it happens. You'd have to be blind and deaf to not be able to solve it.
It's not a murder mystery, it's a murder... comedy?

I’m overwhelmed by her Nancy Wilson hair and I can’t remember anything else.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 7, 2023 9:15 AM |
I’m going to watch it. Everyone is talking about it. Plus I’m cancelling all other streaming channels I used to have as I have a feeling I may not have a job by end of year. Company is working on “a new business model”. Sigh.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 7, 2023 9:25 AM |
you dumbfucks compared her to columbo and now i can't unsee it!
fuck you! i hated columbo!
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 7, 2023 9:48 AM |
OP must not get out much. it's an ok howdunit that would have belonged on USA networked sandwiched between Monk and Psych.
But between Lyonne's Columbo schtick, the muttering under her breath and bird's nest wig, a masterpiece it most definitely is not. The episode she directed with Nick Nolte was a travesty.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 7, 2023 10:58 AM |
I love Poker Face but more for the very clever story lines and plot twists than Lyonne's performance.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 7, 2023 11:12 PM |
Oh wow, this was very good. Loved almost all episodes, though i agree that Ellen Barkins’ was slightly off.
Strangely, my favourite was episode two in the gas sation. The nick nolte one was bad (and he looked extremely old).
Natasha Lyonne is grear in this, much better than in Russion Dolls. She goes from noir to comedy very easily. But i am somehow astounded by her aging process m WTF. She aged 20 years in 5.
