I think I saw Dody Goodman and Madeline Rhue in there, too.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 28, 2023 5:50 PM |
Nancy Kulp looks confused as hell. She must've thought she was going to the girl bar.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 28, 2023 5:51 PM |
My favorite part, at 1:20:
Announcer: "Hey, Cindy!" Cindy Williams: "Yeah? Whaddya want?!"
Oh, and Victor French drunkenly kicking up his heels through the line dance.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 28, 2023 6:09 PM |
R3...and Nancy Kulp wandering past Cindy like a lost drunk woman.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 28, 2023 6:16 PM |
They should have qualified that these were television “stars.”

Susan Richardson and Antonio Fargas need to host the CHiPs Roller Disco Reunion Special.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 28, 2023 6:28 PM |
Even gay ol' Johnnie Ray and his hearing aid showed up!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 28, 2023 6:31 PM |
Lynda Carter and KISS had their own party.
The good part starts at 1:00.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 28, 2023 6:45 PM |
Op that’s some good shit! I saw Linda Lavin, Jo Anne Worley! WTF was Nancy Kulp even doing there? Looking for pussy?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 28, 2023 6:56 PM |
R9 Probably. But Melissa Sue Anderson wasn't interested.

Here is an excerpt from Charlie’s Angels “Angels On Skates” episode from November 1979! Watch Cheryl Ladd as Kris Munroe roller boogie with Ed Bagley Jr! Cheryl’s red spandex pants and rainbow 🌈 suspenders are very 1979!
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 28, 2023 7:02 PM |
I mistook Nancy Culp for Bernie Kopell.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 28, 2023 7:04 PM |
Figures that Susan Richardson showed up, with her untalented behind.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 28, 2023 7:07 PM |
R12 I think this was filmed at the same roller rink as the ChiPs episode.
Look at Ed go!
And in 70s detective shows, the bad guys always chewed gum. Look at Rene Auberjonois just chompin' away.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 28, 2023 7:07 PM |
No Roz Kelly?
Was she busy at Celebrity Needlepoint 😉
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 28, 2023 7:14 PM |
R16 LOL! Maybe she sent her sister Leather in her place.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 28, 2023 7:23 PM |
Shouldn't The Village People have been included?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 28, 2023 7:35 PM |
The announcer didn't mention these "stars" but I think Philip McKeon and Brett Somers are in that video with the other alleged celebrities.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 28, 2023 7:39 PM |
R19 I thought I saw Brett rolling by.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 28, 2023 7:44 PM |
Is that Wesley "Land of the Lost" Eure with Melissa Sue Anderson at 1:50?
And who's the kinda hot lanky dude in the white t-shirt and suspenders skating with who appears to be Helen Reddy at 2:05?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 28, 2023 7:49 PM |
At ease, at ease, at ease. Hey, this here's a benefit for a good cause!

Three boy actors are seen. Phillip McKeon, Adam Rich and Todd Bridges. Uh oh Todd.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 28, 2023 8:08 PM |
R24 Todd's okay now. Adam and Phillip? Not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 28, 2023 8:09 PM |
Where was Robert Urich? Hal Linden? Lauren Tewes? Pam Dawber? Erin Moran?

Connie Needham looks pissed that she had be the one to babysit Adam Rich again.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 28, 2023 8:13 PM |
R26 They were all busy filming an episode of The Love Boat that day.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 28, 2023 8:14 PM |
How in the fuck did they get this mismatch of celebs together for this???
Open casting call for celebrities: Calling all stars! Calling all stars! Roller boogie scene being filmed tomorrow for an episode of NBC’s Chips. Be there!
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 28, 2023 8:18 PM |
Damn, Melissa Sue Anderson wasn't even trying. Her partner was dragging her along while she looked around for an exit.

I think it was kind of like jury duty. In the 1970s, when you were a celebrity and your name was drawn, you were required to report. They may have been given a choice: You can either skate for a few minutes for an episode of CHIPs or you make a fool of yourself in the obstacle course on "Battle of the Network Stars."
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 28, 2023 8:28 PM |
From a 1979 People magazine cover:
"Roller Mania: Olivia, Mork, Cher, the Village People, Billie Jean, JFK Jr., Warhol, Tanya and all America are on wheels"
(Another headline in the same issue: "A lesbian couple raises their 6 kids -- and many hackles")
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 28, 2023 8:33 PM |
R31 Nancy Kulp wisely chose the roller skating rink.

It's like the intro to The Towering Inferno II (1979)

I love the Bonnie mace story about Nancy kulp and Irene Ryan.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 28, 2023 9:03 PM |
R21 I think the tall guy in the suspenders is big-cocked Andrew Prine.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 28, 2023 9:10 PM |
My Nana's monthly cul-de-sac parties has twice as many celebrities in attendance. Ricardo couldn't skate due to his gimp leg, so we let him head up the scavenger hunts.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 28, 2023 9:16 PM |
R21 I could be wrong, but I think that's Raquel Welch skating with Andrew Prine, not Helen Reddy.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 28, 2023 9:36 PM |
R12 & R15: That's Flipper's Roller Disco, at the corner of La Cienega & Santa Monica Blvd (now a CVS). For about two years (1979-81), it was THE place to be. Spent many a weekend afternoon with my friends skating to Donna Summer, Chic, Michael Jackson, etc. (seriously, you were practically guaranteed to hear a song by all three, every hour, they had so many hits). I had my 13th party at Flipper's...sporting spandex pants (oy!) & a Heaven sweatshirt.

We had another thread on this last summer. Classic 70s cheese!
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 28, 2023 9:41 PM |
R39 I know that CVS. I had no idea it used to be a roller rink!

While we're on the topic of roller skating, I recently stumbled across this little gem with Charlotte Rae & the FOL girls skating for Jerry's Kids....in Chatsworth.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 28, 2023 9:51 PM |
when these two guys suddenly appear and boogie on down is a highlight for me.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | January 28, 2023 9:53 PM |
Had Charlotte polished off a bottle of gin before she got to the roller rink?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 28, 2023 9:55 PM |
R41, it was bowling alley before that -- La Cienega Lanes. Good article here:

by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 28, 2023 10:12 PM |
R3, Cindy had a pact with the announcer to say something to get her away from Nancy Kulp if she was starting to hang around for too long
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 28, 2023 10:14 PM |
Ahhh..flashbacks memories. I used to go to GoodSkates in the city and 2
Playboy did one too...the quality suck but like the CHPS disco video, I get verclumped. I was in my early 20s and had the time of my life back then.
Its in three parts...here is part one. Dorothy Stratton was gorgeous. She was on a rerun of Carson the other night....she would have just a couple of months to live
Oh, Jeana from RHOC was in this too

The moment when Victor French, in a drunken stupor, stumbled up to Nancy Kulp and said, "Hey pal, know where the men's room is?"

You mean Leann Hunley, R69? She was gorgeous! And FUNNY!!
I knew her first & foremost as Anna Brady-- Roman's-not-so-dead-first-wife (my first experience with such a thing) on Days of Our Lives. She's still rattling around on DAYS/Beyond Salem from time-to-time. She lost the battle with menopause/her waistline, but I will always love/respect her for leaving her face alone. She still *looks* like Leann Hunley.

Re: Flippers. It seems sadly ironic that a building/property long-associated with recreational & exercise activities (you may not think so, but bowling IS exercise) ended up being a pharmacy/drug store...to treat all our Fatty-problems. (diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure). Look at all those videos from Flipper's or the Venice Boardwalk Skaters. What do you NOT see?? Fat people.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 29, 2023 8:13 AM |
I don't know where that was shot, R68....but ONJ did all her roller-skating practice/rehearsing for Xanadu at "Skateland", a roller-skating rink in Northridge (San Fernando Valley) .

At the beginning of the clip, the poster says "Skate with the Stars: Actors & Others for Animals." I wonder which ones they classified as "actors" and which ones as "others."
by Anonymous | reply 77 | January 29, 2023 6:21 PM |
I like how certain 'celebrities' like Joanne Worley weren't required to actually wear skates and could just, you know, walk around the rollar rink in shoes.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | January 29, 2023 6:58 PM |

R76, There are still a few around in Glendale, Long Beach & Fountain Valley.
Skateland in Northridge (which had been struggling for years) went under during the pandemic. It is now home to the Trebek Center, a 107-bed homeless shelter.

Somehow I missed that mention of Actors & Others for Animals at the beginning. Very cool! Several years ago, I attended a performance of Celebrity Autobiography (hilarious!) in NoHo to benefit Actors & Others for Animals. Joanne Worley, longtime president of AOA, was our hostess & pre-show auctioneer. (Earl Holliman was also president of AOA at one time)

In the video at R43, even though his roller-skating and balance skills are impressive, I feel sorry for that elephant (at 1:56). Animals as circus performers = wrong. Nice to raise money for Jerry's kids, but the poor elephant should have been left out of it.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | January 30, 2023 3:31 AM |
That elephant needed a better agent.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | January 30, 2023 3:34 AM |
I completely agree, R86 (and LOL, R87). The Tara-bit is difficult to watch now, given how much we know about elephants (as well as other animals forced to perform). But that's the thing...we can't go back & undo any of that Circus-shit which was acceptable back then. We can only do better in the future.

The ‘70s were the golden age of TV celebrities getting together for quasi-athletic activities. I just watched a clip on IG for a celebrity bowling show (Victor French was on that one, too, producing casual homoerotic sparks with Pat Morita).
I feel like Rian Johnson or someone should do a movie built around a “Battle of the Network Stars”-type show.
