I think it was kind of like jury duty. In the 1970s, when you were a celebrity and your name was drawn, you were required to report. They may have been given a choice: You can either skate for a few minutes for an episode of CHIPs or you make a fool of yourself in the obstacle course on "Battle of the Network Stars."

Spent many a weekend afternoon with my friends skating to Donna Summer, Chic, Michael Jackson, etc. (seriously, you were practically guaranteed to hear a song by all three, every hour, they had so many hits). I had my 13th party at Flipper's...sporting spandex pants (oy!) & a Heaven sweatshirt.

We had another thread on this last summer. Classic 70s cheese!

It seems sadly ironic that a building/property long-associated with recreational & exercise activities (you may not think so, but bowling IS exercise) ended up being a pharmacy/drug store...to treat all our Fatty-problems. (diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure). Look at all those videos from Flipper's or the Venice Boardwalk Skaters. What do you NOT see?? Fat people.

Somehow I missed that mention of Actors & Others for Animals at the beginning. Very cool! Several years ago, I attended a performance of Celebrity Autobiography (hilarious!) in NoHo to benefit Actors & Others for Animals. Joanne Worley, longtime president of AOA, was our hostess & pre-show auctioneer. (Earl Holliman was also president of AOA at one time)

In the video at R43, even though his roller-skating and balance skills are impressive, I feel sorry for that elephant (at 1:56). Animals as circus performers = wrong. Nice to raise money for Jerry's kids, but the poor elephant should have been left out of it.

That elephant needed a better agent.

I completely agree, R86 (and LOL, R87). The Tara-bit is difficult to watch now, given how much we know about elephants (as well as other animals forced to perform). But that's the thing...we can't go back & undo any of that Circus-shit which was acceptable back then. We can only do better in the future.
