Less than 10% of 2022’s anti-LGBTQ state bills became law, report finds

Though state legislatures considered over 300 bills targeting LGBTQ rights last year, a new report from the Human Rights Campaign found that just 29 became law.

HRC still cares about gay people?

by Anonymousreply 1January 27, 2023 3:29 PM

It does but since many people think the gay rights struggle ended with the right to marriage, HRC and other such organizations had to pivot to trans rights to stay relevant and continue to raise money.

[quote]over 300 bills targeting LGBTQ rights last year

Over 300 bills in ONE YEAR.

They would love it if they all passed, of course, but much of the point of this onslaught is to desensitize people to it. If there's a new bill introduced every workday, eventually people don't even react when it happens. That means fewer news reports on it, fewer protests, and more bills passed quietly without anyone really noticing until people start getting fired or arrested or what have you.

And just a reminder: don't let anyone tell you these are only bills about trans. That's not true, it's been proven to not be true, and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you for sketchy reasons.

Still 29 laws too many.

Suggesting that "less than 10%" became laws is not positive or a victory in any manner.

Where the fuck is HRC in the Dont Say Gay battle?

Oh. That's right. Nowhere. Because it's a state issue. Never mind that if its not stopped at one state, it will become a national issue pretty quickly.

Fuck them. They do nothing on the national level and do nothing to help on the state or local level. Fuck them and their equal sign merchandising strategy. Worthless cunts.

by Anonymousreply 5January 27, 2023 4:35 PM

Is that supposed to be reassuring? That number should be ZERO.

HRC is clearly stated other priorities than protecting gay rights.

LITERAL VIOLENCE!

I am stunned that there were 300 anti-LGBT state bills. They still hate us with a burning passion and never give up making sure we know it.

29 anti-LGBT bills are 29 too many.

We did SO good! Donate now so we can keep defending lgbT rights! Only TWENTY-NINE anti-LGBT bills passed! Time for a gala!

West Virginia is considering a bill where any performance by a trans person will be illegal.

[Quote]West Virginia is considering a bill where any performance by a trans person will be illegal. Call us when it's national. We'll do something then--like throw a gala!

by Anonymousreply 12January 27, 2023 11:09 PM

To be fair, our overhead is huge. We have an image to maintain.

Datalounge has long attracted cranks who make a coordinated effort to undermine the HRC any time it's mentioned, which has always been sketchy to me, and they always do exactly what they did in this thread: ignore what was said and complain that the HRC doesn't cater entirely to old white gays anymore.

This "the HRC doesn't work on a state level" argument is new, and it's directly contradicted by the article itself and the HRC website. I know, the cranks will say that the HRC is lying, but their only proof is "it's true bro, totally believe it."

[quote]The LGBTQ advocacy group’s 2022 State Equality Index, an annual review of state legislation and policies that affect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people, found that state legislators introduced 315 bills that the Human Rights Campaign described as “anti-equality.” Just 29 became law.

[quote]JoDee Winterhof, the senior vice president of policy and political affairs at the Human Rights Campaign, said the 315 bills are part of a coordinated conservative response to LGBTQ rights gained over the last few years.

[quote]“We consider this to be part of the backlash from the gains around marriage equality, from the gains in overall equality through the courts or through cities and other states,” Winterhof said.

[quote]The report warns that, even though 2022 was a record-breaking year for legislation targeting LGBTQ people, 2023 is already expected to outpace it. In just the first few weeks of the year, state legislators have introduced nearly 150 such bills, the majority of them continuing to target LGBTQ youths, according to an NBC News analysis

This is ENTIRELY about laws on the state level, what the HRC has learned about them and what they're doing about it. The claim that they don't do anything until it becomes a national problem is just wrong.

Reread what you posted. They aren't doing anything. They review the bill, they make a statement. Big whoop. People do that all the time on social media; I'd expect better from a national organization that claims it works for LGBT equality. Whetes the actually action? Tell me: Do you work for any state-level LGBT organizations and do you lobby at your state house? And has HRC helped your organization or its goals in any way?

No. They haven't. Because they don't.

They'll gladly siphon off dollars from your local community, though, all to pay for their executives while letting interns do the office/lobbying visits. But if you want a statement to the media. . .well, HRC is your go-to.

by Anonymousreply 16January 28, 2023 9:46 AM

Nothing from the Human Rights Campaign should be declared fact. They got outed for lying about tranny death numbers more than once.

by Anonymousreply 17January 28, 2023 10:24 AM

A single bill passed is a step backward. What’s your point? It’s an acceptable amount of discrimination?
