The Christian baker, Jack Phillips, maintains that the cakes he creates are a form of speech and plans to appeal.

Originalists, did the Founding Fathers believe cake was a form of speech when they created the First Amendment?

While I get the principle, why would you want, let alone knowingly consume, any food made by someone you know despises you.
You're just asking for a sneezer or spit in the cake.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too.

They only had Drake’s Coffee Cake back then!

I don't understand the DLers who constantly say "why would you want to eat that cake anyway?" like in r3's comment.
These people usually don't put signs in their windows saying "fuck off fags, no cake for you." You go to a bakery and order a cake, and then the bakery says "we don't serve your kind here." Then you sue. Whether you'd eat the cake or not is irrelevant at that point, and I fail to see why you guys bring it up all the time, other than it's probably a stealth "stop rocking the boat, stop complaining, just take it and be quiet about it" comment.

True.
I mean why didn’t those black kids find a different place to eat instead of Woolworth’s?

This is only a ruling in state court, a necessary stop along the way to federal court, and was exactly what was expected from a Colorado court. It looks like the press coverage is intentionally trying to portray it as meaningful or final, which it’s not since there is a federal issue to appeal.

Personally, I'd be open to a compromise in which such businesses would have to put up a prominent saying "We don't serve LBGTQ people" and then let capitalism do its work.

Who is bankrolling this stupid fuck? He’s certainly not paying for this lawsuit or his extremely dumb lawyers himself.

the hatred of trans is a test case around the world to spill over the LGB. Those groups try to convince you to drop the T while they've never stopped trying to undo LGB civil liberties and rights, some even activiely fighting to prevent them in a nations where they're just getting to adding protections. It's funny, one said faction, a group that self ids as "political" lesbians (while despising wsw lesbians) have advocated in some of these nations against lgb rights, often more specifically gay male and attempting malign the lesbian communities there as trans - they have a prominent theory that sexual lesbians have penis envy forced onto them by their association with gay men, and therefore desire to be gay men.
it sounds bloody insane... and obviously, I do for repeating it because it sounds completely nuts but it's in all their writings, in their lectures, even their interviews and people bury their heads in the sand because they call themselves feminists too. And nobody seems capable of getting beyond that even as they advocate for horrors. The left largely dismisses them as a fringe group but does little to nothing to counter them while the right embraces them as tokens and offers them platforms... albeit, inevitably they'll throw them under the bus but not without recruiting some libs along the way, and investing the rest of sociopolitical sphere with this nonsense.. always moving from one extreme to the other. superficially.

There seems to be a double standard.
A liberal restaurant can kick someone out for not having the same political beliefs, but a religious baker has to bake a particular cake for a tranny?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 27, 2023 5:02 PM |
No.
First of all, what’s a “liberal restaurant”?
Secondly, you don’t get to come into a restaurant, speaking loudly and use degrading terms for women, get asked to leave and then cry that it’s because of your politics. That’s bullshit.

What R6 said. Also, the people who sue over this sort of thing aren't suing because they really want to force a bigot to bake a cake for them that they will then eat, it's to put them out of business because bigots should suffer consequences. You don't get to run a business serving the public and reap the profits when you discriminate against certain groups. Serve everyone equally or GTFO of business.

Easy to say when he appears (thankfully) to be an outlier. As mentioned, this is what the early civil rights (drug store / Woolworths food counter sit-ins) were all about.
How would you like to be on a road trip, late at night, and you can't stop anywhere for food, lodging, etc. (Because you're gay; straight people can stop for food & lodging.)
