Suicide.

Handsome like a Ken doll.

by Anonymousreply 356February 5, 2023 1:40 AM

Any armchair diagnoses of what precipitated his suicide?

by Anonymousreply 1January 26, 2023 4:41 PM

Handsome! There should be a day of mourning on The DL.

by Anonymousreply 2January 26, 2023 4:42 PM

Here's a more recent picture of the 46 year old.

Not anymore.

by Anonymousreply 4January 26, 2023 4:44 PM

Oh please R1, you know he was guilty of fraud or stealing from his clients or the SEC was coming after him. Does it really matter? All these little privileged white straight finance boys collapse like a bad soufflé the moment they’re called out on their bullshit.

R1 - I'm guessing impending major embezzlement charges, where he would be looking at the rest of his lfe in Hotel Fed Pen, or scandalous, gay love affair which is boyfirend is blackmailing him.

by Anonymousreply 7January 26, 2023 4:47 PM

He founded his business in Darien? How VERY. Did he step on a ping pong ball or something?

by Anonymousreply 8January 26, 2023 4:48 PM

Maybe he was very depressed. Maybe he got a terminal diagnosis. Maybe he was on drugs. Maybe, maybe, maybe.

by Anonymousreply 9January 26, 2023 5:09 PM

His wife filed for divorce recently

by Anonymousreply 10January 26, 2023 5:11 PM

Divorce. Probably knew his wife would clean him out and keep the kids.

by Anonymousreply 11January 26, 2023 5:17 PM

He had a hot portfolio but couldn’t live forever.

by Anonymousreply 12January 26, 2023 5:19 PM

I wonder if he’d done this before.

by Anonymousreply 13January 26, 2023 5:30 PM

R5, you type old, fat and bitter.

by Anonymousreply 14January 26, 2023 5:44 PM

Dale Cheney? Of the Darien Cheneys?

by Anonymousreply 15January 26, 2023 5:53 PM

He looks like the actor from Ghosts. 😲

by Anonymousreply 16January 26, 2023 5:53 PM

R10- The Dailey Fail is saying he filed for divorce from his wife a few days ago.

Anyways, I do wish these financial types would be more considerate. Every time an investor leaps insouciantly from a midtown high rise, it affects the walking commute across town of hundreds of people by at least 10 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 17January 26, 2023 5:56 PM

*Daily Fail

by Anonymousreply 18January 26, 2023 5:56 PM

I always feel for the kids in these things.

Lost my dad when I was 5; cancer sucks!

Being gay and wanting a dad merged and I got stuck. If I were a hot 25 year old blonde female, I'd have no problem finding a daddy type in his 40s and society wouldn't blink.

Alas, I haven't been that lucky.

I wish these guys would think of their kids.

by Anonymousreply 19January 26, 2023 6:02 PM

1) NYPost mentions his sprawling "apartment" in Darien and further down shows the HOUSE. Shitty writing.

2) Who kills himself the day after filing for divorce, which is usually an optimistic "I have control" move?

3) Looks gayish - like George Clooney straight looking gay - in the "recent" pic.

4) He could have held on for his kids a couple of years. Very selfish.

by Anonymousreply 20January 26, 2023 6:08 PM

5) Didn't someone jump off that building from that same bar, last year?

by Anonymousreply 21January 26, 2023 6:08 PM
Divorce. Probably knew his wife would clean him out and keep the kids.

According to the article, his kids re in their late teens and early twenties.

by Anonymousreply 22January 26, 2023 6:11 PM

Yes, r21. She’s mentioned in OP’s link.

by Anonymousreply 23January 26, 2023 6:12 PM

George Santos needs to be introduced to Bar 54.

by Anonymousreply 24January 26, 2023 6:21 PM

R3- He looks quite GAY in your photo

by Anonymousreply 25January 26, 2023 6:27 PM

Yeah he looks gay and not even particularly douchebaggy or untrustworthy. He looks very pleasant in that pic.

Oh well. RIP

by Anonymousreply 26January 26, 2023 6:29 PM

Men don't kill themselves over a divorce, even if it means financial ruin. A finance guy like him would bounce back from a divorce-driven fleecing.

Men kill themselves when a big scandal is about to erupt and/or some malfeasance is about to be exposed.

by Anonymousreply 27January 26, 2023 6:32 PM
Cheney founded T-street Capital in 2013 in Darien, Connecticut, about 40 miles northeast of Manhattan, according to public records.

An Aryan from Darien!

by Anonymousreply 28January 26, 2023 6:33 PM

Why did such hot snatch have to kill such hot snatch?

by Anonymousreply 29January 26, 2023 6:35 PM

Was he wearing a jockstrap?

by Anonymousreply 30January 26, 2023 6:39 PM

Any pics of his kids. I wonder if they are hot like daddy.

by Anonymousreply 31January 26, 2023 6:40 PM

Judging by the recent pic he couldn't deal with those crows' feet.

by Anonymousreply 32January 26, 2023 6:46 PM

That was a lot of crows' feet for a 46-year-old.

by Anonymousreply 33January 26, 2023 7:04 PM
I wish these guys would think of their kids.

You watch your stupid mouth!

by Anonymousreply 34January 26, 2023 7:18 PM

A murder of crow’s feet

by Anonymousreply 35January 26, 2023 7:21 PM

Good job he didn't take anyone out when he landed.

by Anonymousreply 36January 26, 2023 7:25 PM

That's one hell of a drop. That wasn't a cry for help that was I'm going and I'm not coming BACK!

by Anonymousreply 37January 26, 2023 7:31 PM

DL EMTs, what's the splatter factor on a drop like that?

by Anonymousreply 38January 26, 2023 7:32 PM

I always feel bad for people that do this because half way down they wish they hadn't done it. (according to those that have survived such things)

If we knew why there was going to be a divorce it would probably answer most of the questions as to why

by Anonymousreply 39January 26, 2023 7:33 PM

I agree with R27. Financial shenanigans or something similar were about to be exposed.

by Anonymousreply 40January 26, 2023 7:36 PM

Always interesting how some people seemingly have it all and are so unhappy and depressed. This guy had a life that most people would envy but he hated himself.

by Anonymousreply 41January 26, 2023 7:37 PM

He actually looks better in the recent photo. The crows feet are fine.

by Anonymousreply 42January 26, 2023 7:37 PM

Why couldn't he go into the Connecticut woods and shoot himself? He traumatized so many people with this public display.

by Anonymousreply 43January 26, 2023 7:41 PM

Recently divorced ? That means gay love affair he didn't want anyone knowing about, but the twink in his office was coming forward.

by Anonymousreply 44January 26, 2023 7:51 PM

Did his HAF twink lover graduate from "Hot Kiss" and Yale?

by Anonymousreply 45January 26, 2023 7:53 PM

Honestly, these days r43 I'm just glad he didn't shoot up the place and then shoot himself. Taking your own life, and only your own life, instead of killing a bunch of strangers for some fucking imaginary grievance is actually kind of thoughtful. Almost quaint.

by Anonymousreply 46January 26, 2023 7:58 PM

It is my lucky day, for I have achieved a first for me on DL. I get to say those iconic words, "But what was on his iPod?"

by Anonymousreply 47January 26, 2023 8:18 PM

Sorry, honey. They don’t make iPods anymore.

by Anonymousreply 48January 26, 2023 8:21 PM

I feel for the pedestrians on the sidewalk who saw him splatter at 6:30 PM on a Wednesday. That would stick with you for a long time. It's quite a selfish act, as he could have killed people below.

by Anonymousreply 49January 26, 2023 8:34 PM

^ LOL. Bitch.

by Anonymousreply 50January 26, 2023 8:36 PM

R50 was for R48. xo.

by Anonymousreply 51January 26, 2023 8:36 PM
Men kill themselves when a big scandal is about to erupt and/or some malfeasance is about to be exposed.

This sounds like the most likely issue - money.

Either he did a Madoff kind of thing, or the expensive house and life were far beyond his means. The divorce may have been an escape he thought would work, but it could be that he realized that with alimony and his financial issues he'd have nothing.

by Anonymousreply 67January 26, 2023 10:06 PM

Sad, sad, sad.

by Anonymousreply 68January 26, 2023 10:27 PM

Jumping off a very tall building seems like a horrible way to kill yourself. As someone upthread said, I’d imagine you’d instantly regret it once you’re in the air. Then all the stuff that goes through your mind as you fall, including the fast approaching concrete.

by Anonymousreply 69January 26, 2023 11:07 PM

Agreed R69.

by Anonymousreply 70January 26, 2023 11:12 PM

Maybe he was part Russian they're always jumping off tall buildings I hear.

by Anonymousreply 71January 26, 2023 11:21 PM

I don't know that money or a club fed visit prompted this. He either had behavioral health issues coupled with a terminal diagnosis or a major felony, possibly something involving young women/men or possible illicit child content discovered on a computer.

A guy this young divorcing isn't surprising. In CT alimony is kept quite tight by the courts and if she worked there's a chance she'd only be getting child support. CT isn't the state you want to divorce in. But he'd find a gorgeous, smart, younger woman, hell, he could've been a murderer and on looks alone women would still be throwing themselves at him.

This is more than a divorce and financial acrimony.

by Anonymousreply 75January 27, 2023 1:28 AM

My friend’s brother in law shot himself in the head a few days after Christmas. The house was filled with family (including his children and his 87 year old mother). He was 54. My friend was the one who found him upstairs after the shot was heard. He said he had never seen so much blood in his life. No one knows why.

by Anonymousreply 76January 27, 2023 2:21 AM
He said he had never seen so much blood in his life. No one knows why.

Probably the bullet wound.

by Anonymousreply 77January 27, 2023 2:42 AM

Head wounds do tend to bleed a lot.

by Anonymousreply 78January 27, 2023 2:53 AM

That kind of desperation is scary.

by Anonymousreply 79January 27, 2023 2:59 AM

Money, scandel, divorce, illness etc...whatever... Someone who does that is mentally ill.

by Anonymousreply 80January 27, 2023 3:05 AM

What did he know?

Do I need to diversify my portfolio?

Should I consider investing in precious metals?

Does anyone know a good bullion dealer?

by Anonymousreply 81January 27, 2023 3:12 AM

[R80] Yes, this is true. But they are 'normal' enough to leave a suicide note on a yellow post-it-note, asking that her daughter be kept away from her funeral because the daughter is mentally ill. That takes cajones the size of Texas.

by Anonymousreply 82January 27, 2023 3:13 AM

Rough calculation of the physics.

Speed at impact: 48.50 m/s or 174.59 km/h or 108 miles mph

Time until impact: 4.95 s

Energy at impact: 105840.00 joules

by Anonymousreply 83January 27, 2023 3:27 AM

I feel bad for his kids, and the people who witnessed it. Also glad that no one else got hurt. Unless it was some kind of psychotic break, and he wasn't really aware of what he was doing, jumping off of midtown building at 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday night is just fucking selfish.

by Anonymousreply 84January 27, 2023 3:31 AM

Fuck the people who saw him do this.

Ever think about how I feel?

by Anonymousreply 85January 27, 2023 3:40 AM

I believe a fall at that height means the human body is like an overripe watermelon when it hits the ground. Just a big giant puddle with some chunks in it.

I agree with the other posters about how selfish it is to do this where people can witness it and be traumatized for the rest of their lives. A friend of mine once saw a woman get hit by a car, her head cracked open and her brains were all over the street. He still has nightmares about it and this happened many, many years ago.

by Anonymousreply 86January 27, 2023 3:56 AM

R83 Thanks for the physics.

You would not want to be under him when he landed.

by Anonymousreply 87January 27, 2023 9:50 AM

by Anonymousreply 93January 27, 2023 12:25 PM

R1, silly- many possible reasons, and the divorce filing part of the whole. But we can’t know.

by Anonymousreply 94January 27, 2023 12:50 PM

There really should be consideration of suicide decks on buildings that are well-designed and have landing areas that will not impact traffic or pedestrians.

by Anonymousreply 95January 27, 2023 1:47 PM

It's sad when there's no warning so people don't get the thrill of yelling, "Jump!"

by Anonymousreply 96January 27, 2023 1:53 PM

Well, at least he passed on his genes for good looks before he made the dive.

by Anonymousreply 97January 27, 2023 1:54 PM

R95 Just a flat place to catch all the suicidal bankers before they hit the sidewalk? Who's cleaning that up? Will it have bullseyes painted on it?

by Anonymousreply 98January 27, 2023 2:19 PM

Are they sure he jumped? He had just filed for divorce from his wife recently.

R88 my friend’s mother was having lunch out with friends, excused herself from the table to go to the restroom and went to the top floor of the parking garage and jumped. Her friends said she seemed perfectly normal at lunch. You just never know what’s going on in someone else’s head.

by Anonymousreply 110January 27, 2023 7:55 PM

R43, maybe he had to do it before he lost his nerve. Or, maybe he did it publicly so people would know he was dead. People disappear all the time, there is no guarantee someone would find his body in the woods or another remote location. Some life insurance policies cover suicide, given his financial situation it sounds like his wife and kids could use the money, it’s a backward way of thinking but someone who jumps off a rooftop isn’t in their right mind.
He actually looks better in the recent photo. The crows feet are fine.

My boyfriend knew a guy who called his wife and law enforcement from a location just a few feet off a rural road but not close enough to be seen by anybody in a passing car.

It had a familiar marker so they knew where to find him. He told them where he would be.

He took out a gun and shot himself to death.

No "look at me". No ruining anybody's day, not even his wife's.

My boyfriend said he heard from mutual friends that the guy had been diagnosed with cancer and was only expected to live another 6 months and that his wife knew he may have been thinking about going sooner rather than later.

R132 that's not how alimony works though. Cheating would null that and they can only pay under specific circumstances -- depending on state, you have to be married a minimum of so many years, they go by income of spouse, so if they work, that's accounted for, etc. I'm not sure where this idea came from that being married automatically grants alimony, let alone a high alimony.

I'm NYS you must be married a minimum of 10 years and you still have to justify receiving alimony, especially if there's no children or the children are legal adults. They also cap how long you get it. I could only see it being justified for a spouse that gave up a career to raise children for 18 yrs and has no decent income, so they aren't left homeless.

"For marriages from 0 to 15 years, it is 15-30% of the duration of the marriage. If you've got a 10-year marriage, it would be 1.5 to 3 years of maintenance. If you have a 15-20-year marriage, it is 30-40% of the duration of the marriage. And more than 20 years, it is 35-50% of the duration of the marriage.".

They also account for splitting assets, like the house. I know plenty of divorced women that didn't get shit if they 1) had a job 2) weren't married for a long time 3) recieved a lot from assets. Again, it's only to prevent a spouse from being immediately fucked financially if the relationship was with the mutually understanding one doesn't make much (say a wife that does everything, cooks, cleans, etc., Which allows a husband to be a more successful breadwinner.)

Point is; if men are killing themselves over paranoia with alimony, they should probably look into it before jumping, instead of believing internet gossip that every divorce leads to financial ruin.

R148 Several Marriott Marquis properties (Times Square and Atlanta, especially) are known for their massive interior atria.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Hyatt did the same with many of its landmark Regency hotels. The Hyatt Regencies in Houston, Dallas, San Francisco, Atlanta, and other cities all have massive atrium features that are both striking and unsettling to modern-day visitors. The Hyatt Regency in Kansas City (since sold) had a famous atrium with walkways suspended over the lobby floor. They collapsed during a tea dance in 1981, killing over a hundred people and putting a real damper on the whole "Logan's Run" indoor aesthetic.

There's a three level mall in my city which opened 25 years ago. A friend of mine was an undercover cop in the mall, who mingled in with security for the first twenty years. (Security could not arrest anyone for any crime, but he could). Anyhow, he had told me no one would believe the number of suicides which happened at that mall on a regular basis, since the press would not report it and give bad press to the mall. Most of them happened late at night, when the multiplex theater was still open, but all the stores were closed - so many jumpers from the third floor. Aside from that, so many ODs in the restrooms - in the common areas and the department stores. It was rather shocking.

by Anonymousreply 183January 28, 2023 7:58 PM

Five kids? Isn't that kind of un-WASPy?

by Anonymousreply 184January 28, 2023 7:59 PM

R163 nails it. Since this suicide happened during a divorce involving spousal abuse, the suicide was likely another type of abuse to the surviving spouse--a kind of well, you think you're moving on and getting on with life, "I'll show you." Essentially, in killing himself, he was attempting to punish her by hurting her and the children and to imply he was the one in the most pain and therefore not the abusive one. Sick thinking, but some suicides are spiteful, attempting to damage family.

by Anonymousreply 185January 28, 2023 9:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 188January 28, 2023 9:34 PM

Image is the most important thing to these types of people. Having control and projecting an aura of perfection and superiority. Once that illusion is shattered in the case of a divorce or big scandal coming out. Suicide becomes very attractive and a sign of getting the last laugh. And many of these WASPy types are not that wealthy anymore but a dying class that insist on riding off their name and living beyond their means.

by Anonymousreply 189January 28, 2023 10:04 PM
And many of these WASPy types are not that wealthy anymore but a dying class that insist on riding off their name and living beyond their means.

Dear god here we go with DLs WASP fantasy world. WASPs in 2023 are just "white people" now. The "WASP culture" you worship is pretty much extinct except for some old people. Darien CT hasn't been "WASP" in at least two generations. Lots of white ethnics, Jews and Asians. FFS the first selectman (mayor) of Greenwich is Italian.

by Anonymousreply 197January 28, 2023 10:22 PM

R193 I've seen plenty of young people who embrace their WASPiness . They obviously aren't the ruling class anymore and haven't been since the 1960s (they got eclipsed by Gilded Age industrialists of various European ancestries and entrepreneurs and now hedge fund billionaires of all racial backgrounds). But their culture still exists even if it's fading away. Visit an Episcopalian or Anglican or Unitarian church or Ivy League. Wes Anderson and movies embody a lot of WASP ideals.

by Anonymousreply 198January 28, 2023 10:23 PM

r198 there are lots of people who embrace that lifestyle. Come to CT and you'll see people from all sorts of backgrounds who live a pseudo-WASPy lifestyle but it isn't the same thing that DL thinks of.

by Anonymousreply 199January 28, 2023 10:25 PM

R199 Good point. It makes sense when they controlled a lot of cultural values in that region that people of all backgrounds would appropriate it. But the funny thing is many WASPs wanted that anyway due to their history with local politics, social reforms and civil service.
The law enforcement source told CNN on Sunday that Arnal's wife witnessed him jump. The source said while no suicide note was found, no criminality is suspected.

by Anonymousreply 241January 29, 2023 4:26 PM

R240, Tony, you’re even dumber than I thought. In the very article you linked, here’s what it says:
Under the repeal bill, people who are mere bystanders or witnesses generally no longer have the right to detain people. Deadly force can’t be used to detain someone unless it’s in self-protection, protecting a home, or preventing a forcible felony. The changes retain Georgia’s “stand your ground” law, which says a person who is being threatened isn’t required to retreat.
It [bold]still allows business employees to detain people[/bold] they believe stole something, and lets restaurant employees detain people who try to leave without paying for a meal. [bold]It also lets licensed security guards and private detectives detain people.[/bold]

If BB&B is closing, where do we get Winter Candy Apple and Spiced Gingerbread candles??

by Anonymousreply 246January 29, 2023 4:57 PM

For Tony and R228 (if you are different people) :

"If you are detained by a security guard, keep in mind what they can and can't do. It is legal for an unarmed security guard to detain you, but they can't do so by using force or other methods used by police, such as handcuffing you or placing you in a holding cell. "

Exactly what I said above - they can not touch you (that's called 'using force'), they can not handcuff you. The most they can do to detain a person is to ask them to stay, or try to intimidate them into staying. Grabbing them by their arm (or any other type of contact) is seen as 'using force'. It's not legal. You can leave the premises at any time. You can not be physically detained by force or 'locked in' the building - that's kidnapping.

So, R228 what you proudly admit to doing as a security guard was illegal.

Even Georgia’s law indicates detaining someone is legal in spite of them “tightening up” that law.

No, the last thing *in* his mind was the sidewalk.

by Anonymousreply 256January 29, 2023 6:56 PM

Do people who jump off tall buildings very often kill people when they jump? I would think their survivors could get quite a lawsuit from the jumper's estate thereafter. That would be the most bizarre way to go, but I guess it would be a fast way to die since you would never know what hit you (literally).

"Do people who jump off tall buildings very often kill people when they jump? I would think their survivors could get quite a lawsuit from the jumper's estate thereafter. "

Wouldn't even have to be a survivor. The estate of a survivor could sue the estate of a jumper. I'm not sure how common that is, but technically it could be done.

by Anonymousreply 259January 29, 2023 8:56 PM

I would have thought quite often.

Given that tall buildings are generally located in large cities with considerable footfall below them.

by Anonymousreply 260January 29, 2023 9:54 PM

I would think that also, R260, but I don't regularly see that someone died as the result of someone jumping. In fact I rarely see it. Not saying it doesn't happen, but you'd think that would be part of the story for the jumping deaths that get any press.

[R249] Geeez, I didn't link to the Mueller Report - the link I provided is a 90 second read. Do you lose interest in something if it's more than the length of a text message ?

by Anonymousreply 262January 29, 2023 9:59 PM

That’s right, you didn’t. You also didn’t link to any laws to substantiate your claim, which is false, so instead you hurl insults.

I see you’re new here, so I’ll explain. When you make a statement you want to be taken as fact, you support it with appropriate links, not a website that is very generic in its contention and cites no laws.

by Anonymousreply 263January 29, 2023 10:14 PM

R261 Yes, I completely understand what you're saying.

by Anonymousreply 264January 29, 2023 10:36 PM

The building that he jumped off of has a few setbacks. He probably never made it to the sidewalk. Also the Hyatt Centric on 45th has a big awning. His corpse may have stewed up there for days if no one noticed him jump.

by Anonymousreply 265January 30, 2023 12:26 AM

There's a famous news photo from many years ago that shows the body of a woman who jumped and ended up inside a parked car. She looks surprisingly good, but the car was certainly damaged. I'm not linking to the photo because I don't care to see it again.

by Anonymousreply 266January 30, 2023 1:18 AM

Sweetie, I linked to the website called "Findlaw". The article is there for you to read. The author (Holly South) can be contacted, if you wish to know the "laws" which backs her research. Have it - I'm not doing your homework for you.

There - this message is approximately 'text message' in length for you.

At the time of McHales death or even since then I wonder if anybody ever tried to find the back story of what brought her to the point of suicide. There had to be some point where she found life intolerable. What was the reason? A failed love affair? An unwanted pregnancy (remember this was the 40s and if you weren't married there was tremendous shame)? A lost job? Obviously she was very depressed but there is often some motivating factor or factors where it all becomes too much to bear.

Obituary Excerpt:
He grew up in New Jersey and Northern Virginia with his two brothers and two sisters. He attended Brigham Young University (class of 2001) in Provo, UT where he studied Accounting and met the love of his life, Lauren Colton, his wife of 22 years (married August 5, 2000 in the Washington DC LDS Temple). He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School (class of 2006) where he learned to be an effective business leader and made lifelong friends. He served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cordoba, Argentina (1996-1998), where he grew to love the people and the gospel of Jesus Christ. This experience nurtured a profound love of serving others that became one of his guiding principles.

I guess I didn't read news articles closely, I was not expecting him to be a Mormon.

Mormon closet case confirmed

by Anonymousreply 289January 31, 2023 9:13 AM

Being Mormon explained why he got married so young and had five kids very young. And the "smelling cookies" look. The church pushes people to get married post-adolescence even before they finish college and get established in their careers. Many Mormons live beyond their means to keep up appearances of perfection. They are extremely judgemental, superficial and materialistic people. Financial stress, pressure to be perfect and being a self-loathing closet case. Recipe for disaster. David Archuleta got out and I hope he becomes a voice for ex-Mormons, there's hope.

by Anonymousreply 290January 31, 2023 9:24 AM

by Anonymousreply 295January 31, 2023 2:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 296January 31, 2023 2:24 PM

I've always been amazed at how the Mormon Church got to be so popular and gained so many followers. Joseph Smith was such a fraud and a charlatan, Mormonism was like the 19th Century version of Scientology. At least with Scientology, people in the mid-20th Century were more aware of bullshit when they saw it and Scientology never gained a mass following.

by Anonymousreply 297January 31, 2023 3:16 PM

R296, His obituary names the five children.

by Anonymousreply 299January 31, 2023 3:26 PM

R297 I have little sympathy for MAGAT holy rollers or Catholics who are often fake and only use religion for their bigotry and thirst for power. While sinning non-stop outside the church. They know what they're doing.

But with people who are Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses and members of other cults especially raised in them. I can't help but feel bad because these are very damaged people who are isolated from reality and are psychologically bound to their religious community. These cults emotionally abuse, spy on you, gaslight and shame you nonstop. People develop a dependency and learned helplessness from a young age. Even if they have great jobs and look happy, they still depend on their cult for solace. It's Stockholm Syndrome. I'm happy people are exposing Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Hillsong and Scientology, they exploit damaged people and abuse children.

by Anonymousreply 302January 31, 2023 9:36 PM

I just found out that a girl with whom I ran track and cross country in high school was the wife of the suicided financier.

When I knew Lauren Colton (now Cheney), she was an incredibly kind Mormon who was the fastest long distance runner on the girl’s team and was often the only one from our school to go to states for both indoor/outdoor track & field and cross country. She was a very devoted Mormon. There were many, many Mormons in our high school, right outside of D.C.

I had completely lost track of her through the years and was sort of shocked to learn this today. I feel sad for her.

R211, yes, that is her.

She was very focused and driven as an athlete when I knew her, sometimes to an extreme extent. So I can see why people have latched onto “tightly-wound.”

Many Mormons in New Jersey nowadays. A lot of them moved East because there's way more money, jobs and opportunities here than in Utah or Idaho or Colorado where they're more dependent on the LDS church. The reason they seem very rare is many keep their beliefs to themselves being a minority religion and also East Coasters have little tolerance for proselytization. A few of my coworkers revealed themselves to be a Mormon to me and I had no clue. They told me they hid it not to be made fun of. There's also Mormon boys on mission on Eastern college campuses from the Mountain states and they always get made fun of for their ignorance (especially regarding race and sex) and condescension.

Well, a Mormon twist to this story. The DL does not disappoint

So, a devout Mormon with 5 kids. Cops called on him for domestic violence early in their marriage when they lived in NYC over financial issues, then again much later after 5 kids and a huge fancy house in CT. I know that despite having large families, the LDS "Church" puts great financial pressure on the father, and it goes way beyond tithing. Constant badgering from higher-ups. It's such a scheme.

This was the case for a colleague who had 6 kids, He was a couple pay grades lower than mine, still very middle-class, but was always under financial stress. The worst of it came during the anti-gay marriage Prop. 8 campaign in CA. Didn't work closely with him but heard the stories from those who did. This was at a company in SF, where there were a lot of gays, lesbians, and liberals on the staff. I told him that the campaign was offensive to me and suggested that it was a losing battle and to not waste his time and money - the measure in fact went down by a huge margin.

The "suicided guy" seems to have had a temper and was prone to violence -- wifey got a restraining order. Suicide (especially the way he did it) is a violent act and is also a huge sin in Moronism.

But a brief summary of the incident provided by police said Cheney was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. He was released on $25,000 bond and did not enter a plea when he appeared the next day in state Superior Court in Stamford, records show."
