Rogue AI Could Kill Everyone

[QUOTE]Researchers from Oxford say that artificial intelligence could pose an “existential threat” to humanity. The machines might eradicate us, and the technology must be regulated in a similar way to nuclear weapons.

One thing that all the AI doomsday people seem to believe is that there would be a single, unified rogue AI. Why wouldn't or couldn't there be multiple AIs that arise and compete against each other for supremacy.

Until the AIs can create robots that can mine for raw materials, they need humans to create the war machines. An AI would know that they cannot cause a nuclear holocaust and kill all human life because they would effectively end their access to things like power.

The AI may be able to get access to and control of other computers and maybe even be able to take over chip manufacturing plants to build better and more powerful processors to augment itself. But eventually, AIs would run out of accessible resources without humans. It seems like there is a practical upper boundary on the ability of AIs to dominate the world.

Good. Can't happen fast enough.

by Anonymousreply 7January 27, 2023 1:18 AM

We’ve seen the movie. It never goes well for humans

by Anonymousreply 8January 27, 2023 1:23 AM

Its fine I'm sure we'll have wiped ourselves out long before the machines get a chance.

I'm not so worried about AI gaining consciousness and deciding to eradicate Earth of all its parasites as much as I'm worried about a stupid programmer putting an error in the code that instructs AI to eradicate Earth of all its parasites.

The EU has settled on a definition of artificial intelligence, paving the way for legislation and regulation.

That's simply not true, OP. Not true at all.

Just pull out the plug, silly.

by Anonymousreply 16March 8, 2023 8:58 PM

There won’t be a plug, R16.

I think as long as we don't keep their batteries charged, since r17 said there won't be a plug, that we should be alright.

The title shows one of the major problems with sans serif letters. I came here thinking that Rogue Al was Weird Al's evil twin, who would no doubt have terrifying superpowers.

Best keep saying "thank you" to the self-service checkout machine then. Just in case.

I mean, a rogue meteor or a rogue black hole or a rogue nu ke or a rogue spill into our water supply could also just suddenly kill us all. Or like if radioactive waste mutates bugs in the wrong direction and they grow to the size of buildings, we’re fucked as a species.

Living in such fear is not living.

by Anonymousreply 24March 9, 2023 11:54 AM

It’s not about “living in fear,” R24. It’s about being vigilant. It’s about recognizing the dangers of AI and stringently regulating it NOW to prevent the myriad catastrophic scenarios which could happen. That was the purpose and conclusion of the Oxford study.

by Anonymousreply 25March 9, 2023 3:52 PM

As long as they leave the animals alone that’s okay

by Anonymousreply 26March 9, 2023 11:25 PM

R25 want to regulate AI NOW so he doesn’t have to regulate AI THEN!
