Being over 40 makes you realize how much time you waste

When you’re in your teens and 20s, it feels like you’re going to live forever and you have all the time in the world. But now in my early 40s, I suddenly feel horrified at the amount of time I’ve wasted in my life. There are so many things we modern humans do that are just a complete waste of time. Playing stupid iPhone games and browsing Twitter instead of reading and learning something. Staying in terrible jobs that pay shit and make us unhappy. Watching porn instead of fucking someone. Being angry with people over things that happened years ago. Worrying about things that don’t matter. Why do we humans spend so much time looking for distractions instead of aiming to be the best we can be?

I’m in a good place now and I’m happy, but damn, if I had finished my bachelors and masters degrees in my 20s instead of in my 30s, I could’ve been way further along than I am now.

by Anonymousreply 58February 3, 2023 11:57 PM

Yep.

by Anonymousreply 1January 26, 2023 12:55 AM

Gosh OP, I feel exactly this. I tell myself awareness is the first step, and that I’m living to 120 (I might!) so my life isn’t even half over.

Best to you too.

by Anonymousreply 2January 26, 2023 12:59 AM

Live it up op ! Forget about the past and Carpa Diem ! We don’t know how long we have. Especially considering the Russia / Ukraine and soon to be NATO world war .

by Anonymousreply 3January 26, 2023 1:01 AM

Carpa?

by Anonymousreply 4January 26, 2023 1:04 AM

Very true, Op!

So have you created goals for the next 5 years?

If you have goals, you don’t have time to waste on iPhone games and …DL

by Anonymousreply 5January 26, 2023 1:06 AM

Oh, honey! Wait until you hit 60!

by Anonymousreply 6January 26, 2023 1:07 AM

[quote]I’m in a good place now and I’m happy, but damn, if I had finished my bachelors and masters degrees in my 20s instead of in my 30s, I could’ve been way further along than I am now.

further along what?

by Anonymousreply 7January 26, 2023 1:11 AM

Sounds dreadful. Not a milestone I’m looking forward to.

by Anonymousreply 8January 26, 2023 1:13 AM

[quote] further along what?

Goals. X is goals.

by Anonymousreply 9January 26, 2023 1:21 AM

Some people get it together later than others. It's easy to look back and think how much better you would have done it, from your maturer perspective.

by Anonymousreply 10January 26, 2023 1:23 AM

Humans are the worst.

by Anonymousreply 11January 26, 2023 1:25 AM

But you LOOK 17

by Anonymousreply 12January 26, 2023 1:26 AM

Yes OP and it’s crazy what a blur my 30s were. It’s scary how fast that decade flew by. And it’s not like I was doing anything crazy.

I’m wondering if after you turn 30, every decade just passes faster and faster.

by Anonymousreply 13February 1, 2023 12:32 PM

[quote] Carpa Diem !

O care!

by Anonymousreply 14February 1, 2023 12:34 PM

R13 - Yes.

by Anonymousreply 15February 1, 2023 12:34 PM

You don't have time to look backward, OP, reflecting on what you might have done better is as much wasted as on those stupid iPhone games. I was never one to spend a lot of time looking backward, but that realization was liberating for me and made making decisions about the present and future and things I can change all the easier.

by Anonymousreply 16February 1, 2023 12:45 PM

[quote]You don't have time to look backward, OP

He seems to have found it.

by Anonymousreply 17February 1, 2023 1:24 PM

I'm always fascinated by the nearly universal sense that time moves more quickly as you age.

When you're young, it seems like the days and weeks seem to pass so slowly. But, as you age, it seems to go by in the blink of an eye.

by Anonymousreply 18February 1, 2023 1:28 PM

Once you have more past than future, time appears to go by quicker.

I turn 36 this year, yet it feels like I turned 30 just about a year ago..

by Anonymousreply 19February 1, 2023 1:34 PM

Don’t worry OP, you sound like you still have plenty of growing up to do.

by Anonymousreply 20February 1, 2023 2:00 PM

This song has always made me cry since it speaks to the passing of time.

I can’t say that watching porn is necessarily a waste of time when you could be fucking someone. That assumes you have access to someone you’d enjoy fucking.

by Anonymousreply 22February 1, 2023 7:25 PM

R18 It really makes me mad. Our lifespans aren't long enough.

by Anonymousreply 23February 1, 2023 7:28 PM

I have a hard to distinguishing pop culture trends these days, especially music. All of these auto-tuned major artists sounds the same. And it wasn't until he headlined the Superbowl that I realized that The Weeknd is one person and not the name of a band.

And is pop music changing at the rate that it used to change? In recent music threads, were we sharing our favorite songs. Those lists brought into sharp focus just how different '60s music was compared with pop music from the '70s.

Then music totally reinvented itself for the '80s and same with the '90s. It seemed liked Disco died almost overnight when the '80s began. Another instantaneous change happened overnight when Grunge took over in the early '90s. Hair metal, which had been so popular during the previous decade, vanished almost immediately.

What has really changed in pop music in the last 20 years? It all just seems really homogenized these days. And the crap they were putting out in 2007 sounds just like the crap they're putting out now, just with more auto-tune.

by Anonymousreply 24February 1, 2023 7:49 PM

[quote]And is pop music changing at the rate that it used to change? In recent music threads, were we sharing our favorite songs. Those lists brought into sharp focus just how different '60s music was compared with pop music from the '70s.

OMG - pop music changed every single year in the 60s - I have some old 60s pop music papers and people say "That sounds like last year" or "This isn't progress" when reviewing songs. People talked about records from 18 months ago as being "dated".

[quote]And is pop music changing at the rate that it used to change? In recent music threads, were we sharing our favorite songs. Those lists brought into sharp focus just how different '60s music was compared with pop music from the '70s.

Music has lost its power and importance. It's of little value now. "Everyone" listened to the pop radio in the 60s and 70s. Even my grandparents (then in their 50s) bought pop records in the '60s. It was a musical era. This most surely is not.

by Anonymousreply 25February 1, 2023 8:09 PM

Very true, R25.

Also, artistry is DEAD. There are many performers these days, but precious few artists. And don't get me started on the likes of Taylor Swift with their generic robot voices.

by Anonymousreply 26February 1, 2023 8:27 PM

Yes r13. Yes a thousand times.

by Anonymousreply 27February 1, 2023 8:45 PM

Disco didn't die r24 it evolved into House Music.

by Anonymousreply 28February 1, 2023 8:46 PM

OP, you wanna fuck?

by Anonymousreply 29February 1, 2023 8:48 PM

There are a lot of things I don’t do anymore because they seem like a pointless waste of the time left.

by Anonymousreply 30February 1, 2023 8:52 PM

Oh, wait til you're 50 like me. I feel like I have a big clock counting down over my head.

One BIG thing you can do is delete all social media. WTF is it for? It's an endless waste of time. Totally ridiculous.

I try to be kind to myself but Ive wasted so many opportunities because I was scared to jump all in. And now here I am, doing ok - but utterly perplexed at the very nature of life and what to do with the time left.

by Anonymousreply 31February 1, 2023 8:54 PM

I realized when I was a little child that I was going to die some day and that’s influenced my life choices. Not that I haven’t done a lot of stupid stuff, but I also wanted to get in everything I wanted to do within a reasonable timeline. But that was long before online porn or Tetris.

by Anonymousreply 32February 1, 2023 8:56 PM

This is cliched and very MARY! but since I've turned 40, I've definitely been reminded of that quote re: youth is wasted on the young.

Actually, I just googled and the exact quote is...

“Youth is the most precious thing in life; it is too bad it has to be wasted on young folks." -George Bernard Shaw.

by Anonymousreply 33February 1, 2023 9:00 PM

That's cool, R33. I always thought it was Oscar Wilde who said that.

Try not to be too hard on yourself, OP. It's okay to take breaks and play a silly game or swipe through Twitter. I'm turning 49 in June and I definitely feel like time is passing more quickly than ever before. I still feel (and look) like I'm in my late 30s!

by Anonymousreply 34February 1, 2023 9:37 PM

R31 is me. That big giant clock ever since I hit 50.

by Anonymousreply 35February 1, 2023 9:40 PM

Another problem is these days there’s so many things around us to do to waste time. Over 100 channels of television, movies, books, video games, Internet, unlimited porn, etc…… I can be in my house for days and remain thoroughly entertained!

by Anonymousreply 36February 1, 2023 9:47 PM

R35 I read your reply as "big giant COCK."

by Anonymousreply 37February 1, 2023 9:49 PM

[quote] Music has lost its power and importance.

For you.

[quote]It's of little value now.

To you.

[quote]"Everyone" listened to the pop radio in the 60s and 70s. Even my grandparents (then in their 50s) bought pop records in the '60s. It was a musical era. This most surely is not.

I don't understand this. For this to be a "musical era", grandparents have to buy pop music?

[quote] Also, artistry is DEAD. There are many performers these days, but precious few artists.

Artistry isn't dead. You don't listen to enough current music. And you guys are old. Sorry. You're set in your ways. I'm old, too, but I like a lot of the music now. You don't have to listen to Top 40 pop. There's a lot of music available. Tastes change and if yours don't change with the times, that's understandable. But it's bad to put down a lot of the younger music/musicians. They're extremely talented.

by Anonymousreply 38February 1, 2023 10:33 PM

R38 Who should we start listening to?

List10 artists that you recommend and listen to on regular rotation.

by Anonymousreply 39February 1, 2023 10:37 PM

I’ve been making a point to do those language learning apps (working on Spanish and French) in place of any social media, reading books from the library, meditating with an app for 15 minutes a day and doing walks daily.

I’m also working on maintaining friendships. And trying to make new friends. Which isn’t easy.

I use Spotify to discover new music.

I want to be more intentional about my time since my 30s were that blur.

I do love datalounge - not giving you bitches up. As much as we all complain at times, there’s a community here. And you all makes me laugh pretty consistently.

by Anonymousreply 40February 1, 2023 10:41 PM

[quote]And you all makes me laugh pretty consistently.

And that’s without you even seeing us!

by Anonymousreply 41February 1, 2023 10:43 PM

Even the youngsters are lamenting on time flying by . Times are different with this new world

by Anonymousreply 42February 1, 2023 10:45 PM

I am almost 52. I spend my spare time cleaning out my house waiting for my death. My life has been shit so I am looking forward to it.

by Anonymousreply 43February 1, 2023 10:56 PM

Well, *I* love you, r43.

So you’ve got that going for you. AND we’re the same age, so we can reminisce.

by Anonymousreply 44February 1, 2023 10:57 PM

Popular music is better than ever

I definitely notice a difference between the ghetto ‘00s sound and the more pop sound of the ‘10s.

But the ‘20s really sounds ghetto. For example, listen to SZA. What is the matter with her? She sounds so brain damaged. Whitney Houston she isn’t.

by Anonymousreply 46February 1, 2023 11:30 PM

wait till you are 60...

by Anonymousreply 47February 1, 2023 11:32 PM

OP it is over for you. can I have your stuff?

by Anonymousreply 48February 1, 2023 11:34 PM

My favorite time of life was spent doing what I was told was a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 49February 1, 2023 11:50 PM

Sucking dick?

That’s never a waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 50February 2, 2023 12:18 AM

R49 totally !!

by Anonymousreply 51February 3, 2023 2:13 AM

Yes and as you age beyond 40, time becomes progressively more precious.

by Anonymousreply 52February 3, 2023 2:48 AM

Wasting time with pleasurable activities...that is the stuff life is made of.

by Anonymousreply 53February 3, 2023 4:26 AM

R38 I mentioned earlier up-thread that I will turn 36 this year. I know that's ancient in DataLounge years, but outside this realm of nastiness, one wouldn't consider that old.

by Anonymousreply 54February 3, 2023 12:50 PM

Yes OP like posting on the Datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 55February 3, 2023 1:08 PM
