Gordon Lightfoot - If You Could Read My Mind
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I am a ghost, you can't see

My favorite by the Eagles.
Not a huge fan of theirs, but growing up in SoCal in the 70's, you couldn't escape them, and they did have some great stuff that captured the essence of that time and place.

I Love the 5th Dimension and the Carpenters.
There's Fitzgerald and Streisand. For sheer, raw, talent, they occupy a class by themselves, and always will be my favorite vocalists.
But damn, my auditory canals love, love, did I say LOVE? the sound that comes out of the mouths of Marilyn McCoo and Karen Carpenter.
McCoo owns "One Less Bell to Answer", even though Streisand recorded it, too.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | January 26, 2023 6:08 PM |
R141 Marilyn McCoo has one of the smoothest, most controlled voices of any female vocalist. Her phrasing, her intonation, her tone - that's a woman who knows how to sing.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | January 26, 2023 6:12 PM |
McCoo has great vocal technique and phrasing, even today. This is another 70s classic that showcases her beautiful voice.

My mom and I moved to the bay area (Berkley) in early 1978 and this song was really popular at the time. We were both young, I was 7 and mom was 26. How I loved that place, especially SF. I loved the trolleys, fisherman's wharf, china town. Even though I was really young I can still remember the carefree attitude and open mindedness of that place and time. My mom really tried to make a go of it there, but it was hard for a single mother and young daughter. We ended up moving back to Tx a year and a half later. Every time I Hear this song it reminds me of those days and San Francisco.

Bow down, bitches.
Harry Nilsson was the fucking Kong of 1970s wistfulness.
His voice was beautifully vulnerable and sad, and he was a wonderful interpreter of both his own lyrics and those of others.
Whenever I want to feel less alone in longing for a time or a person long gone from my own life, I listen to Harry Nilsson to remember feeling wistful is part of the human condition.

OP, we have labored to fulfill your request. Please compile a playlist of the top 40 or so selections and share it with the group.

wistful • WIST-ful • adjective.
1 : full of yearning or desire tinged with melancholy; also : inspiring such yearning
2 : musingly sad : pensive.
Example:
The Jacksons - "Good Times"

And I don’t think it gets more wistful than this…..

"After The Love Has Gone" -- Earth, Wind & Fire
This performance is from the '80s, but it was a '70s classic. R.I.P. Maurice 💖

R251 Yes! Rose Freaking Royce! Masters of the 70s soul ballad
The change up leading up to "I feel it's time we should make up, baby...." always floors me and it just sweeps on through to the finale. Heart meltingly beautiful.

99 Miles To LA - one of Art Garfunkel's best, IMO.

See R1, R256
by Anonymous | reply 257 | January 30, 2023 1:27 PM |
Missed that, R257. What's funny is my first thought was Wishing You Were Here, and when I saw OP used it, the Garfunkel tune was my next. I wonder if I could intuit the whole thread.

Lou Rawls, "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine'"
by Anonymous | reply 264 | January 30, 2023 4:09 PM |
Okay this was released in 1980, but I'll say that he wrote it in '79- Genesis' "Misunderstanding":

She was not singing about a guy as commonly believed.
Debby Boone was singing about God.

Torn between two lovers...feelin' like a fool.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | January 31, 2023 3:56 AM |
PS the Babe song was released in ‘79, but that concert was in ‘80.

If this isn’t the DL anthem, I don’t know why.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | January 31, 2023 9:06 AM |
R271 Ugh. I always hated that song and her thin, whiney voice.
Just choose one of the fucking lovers and move on, bitch!

we got a lot of stuff from America that we made hits that flopped in the homeland
by Anonymous | reply 280 | January 31, 2023 10:46 AM |
here's another - what were you thinkin' America?

Bill Withers has a few solid entries here. He had more than a few wistful, romantic songs like "Hello Like Before."
by Anonymous | reply 282 | January 31, 2023 2:47 PM |
Fabulous & beautiful song, R282 - I was the one who posted the Bill songs. That album was a flop and had the most beautiful wistful songs - a few were used in a DL fave movie to great effect.

I heard a piece on NPR last night regarding a new documentary about the rise and fall soft rock: "Sometimes When We Touch". I learned that soft rock influenced hip hop.

R286 - you're an idiot!
by Anonymous | reply 287 | January 31, 2023 6:33 PM |
Nothing romantic or wistful about "Baby Don't Get Hooked On Me".
Have you listened to the lyrics?
It's the exact opposite of romantic and wistful.
It's basically "I'll fuck you, but don't fall in love with me because I'm gonna dump you".
by Anonymous | reply 288 | January 31, 2023 7:58 PM |
R288 No, it's wistful because it's about a guy who's letting a woman down easily because he's not ready for a relationship.
by Anonymous | reply 289 | January 31, 2023 9:06 PM |
R288 Yes, we've all heard the lyrics.
"Girl, you're getting that look in your eyes
And it's starting to worry me.
I ain't ready for no family ties
Nobody's gonna hurry me."
There's nothing sinister about it. He's telling her he's just a fuck around guy and she probably shouldn't get involved with him. He's giving her a chance to back away.

And there's NOTHING wistful or romantic about a Pet Shop Boys produced Sondheim piece. Liza in the rain stalked by some Euro-trash gender-neutral peeping tom? Thunka-thunka-thunka-thunka-thunka - god it's so bad. I'd rather hear Patti try to be subtle and sing LMM...
by Anonymous | reply 291 | January 31, 2023 9:50 PM |
R291 And that song was from the 1980s, too.
by Anonymous | reply 292 | January 31, 2023 10:16 PM |
R288 Point taken.
"Don't start clinging to me girl, 'cause I can't breathe" doesn't sound like letting her down easy to me, but agree to disagree...
Meanwhile, this one's a beauty...

R287 poop head.
Doesn’t grasp lyrics.
