THR downgrades Michelle Yeoh from Asian woman to “woman who identifies as Asian”

There were other actresses who had Asian ancestry nominated in that category. Michelle Yeoh is the first actress to identify as Asian to be nominated. Conceptually it is easy to understand but hard to articulate. THR gave its best shot.

It does seem to be specifically referencing Merle Oberon, an Anglo-Indian born in Bombay who hid her ethnicity to work in Hollywood

They could have just said “First East Asian Actress” for MY and avoided the faux pas
