7 killed in two shootings in California communit
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) — Seven people were killed in two related shootings Monday at a mushroom farm and a trucking firm in a coastal community south of San Francisco, and a suspect was in custody, officials said.
San Mateo County Board of Supervisors President Dave Pine says four people were killed at the farm and three at the trucking business on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay, a city about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of San Francisco.
It wasn’t immediately clear how the locations were connected, though Pine said the suspect worked for one of the businesses. He called the suspect a “disgruntled worker.”
California state Sen. Josh Becker, who represents the area, said people were killed in separate shootings. San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa tweeted that one shooting happened at a mushroom farm.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office tweeted just before 5 p.m. that a suspect was in custody.
“There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time,” the sheriff’s office said.
Television footage from the area showed officers taking a man into custody without incident.
Aerial television images also showed police officers collecting evidence from a farm with dozens of greenhouses.
The shooting followed the killing of 11 people late Saturday at a ballroom dance hall in Southern California.
“We are sickened by today’s tragedy in Half Moon Bay,” Dave Pine, president of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, said in a statement. “We have not even had time to grieve for those lost in the terrible shooting in Monterey Park. Gun violence must stop.”

The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, popularly known as the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB), was a subsection of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a United States federal law which included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms that were defined as assault weapons as well as certain ammunition magazines that were defined as large capacity.
The 10-year ban was passed by the U.S. Congress on August 25, 1994 and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994. The ban applied only to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment. It expired on September 13, 2004, in accordance with its sunset provision. Several constitutional challenges were filed against provisions of the ban, but all were rejected by the courts. There have been multiple attempts to renew the ban, but none have succeeded.

I feel like I’m living in an altered universe. Another 17 people gunned gun in deaths more brutal than civilian deaths in Ukraine. Another DL thread where 1.5 million “isn’t much” and people brag about their wealth and do lots of ‘look over there’.
As one of the majority who will never own a gun, never have a 1.5 million home, never be able to hole up in a gated community or secured condo building……I just feel completely helpless and hopeless. I vote but that doesn’t do much good. I got an education, I’m a hard worker, I’ve worked 3 jobs when needed……I’ll never be rich, I’ll never be able to watch the world burn from my penthouse or run off to Canada.
Not sure about any other regular young(ish) Joes but I do feel that people like us are not too far removed from cannon fodder. We risk being blown to pieces in a supermarket while one side poses for Christmas cards with AR15s and the other sends love and support from their multi million homes while claiming to be middle class on $700,000 a year.

This hyperbole is of no use to anyone. Have you seen any of the videos of civilian deaths in Ukraine? Being shot is not more brutal than what they're going through. Ukrainian citizens are lucky if they were only shot, and not blown up, tortured, or crushed under a building.

Even if there were 5 mass shootings, 20 people killed in each shooting, every single day of the year, that would still be less than 1% of the total number of deaths in the United States each year.
I only say this to give a broader picture of how the number of shooting deaths in this country relates to the total number of deaths, I don't mean to say that we should just accept mass shootings as part of normal civilized society.

[quote]Your culture is fucking heinous.
UK culture and American culture are basically the same. The point is that the only thing stopping Brits from having the same level of gun crime is because the bulk of their citizens (and even police force) don't have guns. The knife crime in the UK, however, is a reflection of the same murderous, trashy, culture that if given the opportunity would mirror that of the US.
Remember, the US was founded by Brits who were basically tired of the British and their trashy culture. Sadly, some of that trashy culture stayed with them and was brought here. At the end of the day, though, the trash started in the UK. Just look at the BRF.

No one in power is seriously looking out for avg people, their safety, or their wallet. Especially not rich lawmakers or billionaires. Pricing entire swaths of the population out of the economy will drive much worse than a few shootings in the future, I fear. I expect to see gangs of bandits roaming the country in the next few decades. People who want to survive that mayhem (for whatever reason) will probably need lots of guns, sadly.
