The Gays and Tennis Part 139 -- Another Week in Oz!

Welcome back, tennis fans!

As we get to the business end of the year's first slam, everyone is wondering:

Will Sabalenka complete their transition before Saturday's final?

Will Ben Shelton withdraw with an acute case of acne?

Will Our Tommy finally oblige his many fans and present hole?

Can anyone short of Jeff Gilooly stop Novaxx?

Well Jelena be cast as Violet in the next Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

Will Jess Pegula win more fans, and win it all??

All these, and more pressing questions to be answered, as we soldier on down in OZ!!

Thanks for the new thread Ms. OP! I was just about to write one but you beat me to the pop.

Those are definitely the questions we need answers to!

Here's Last DL Boyfriend Standing, Tommy Paul, for a gratuitous bit of eye-candy to set us on our merry way.

Osteopenia is quite the character- looks like Queen Victoria, way out of shape, clocks every ball- when in she wins, questions the line calls of a computer system… I gather she is universally disliked by her peers.

Not Tommy- great guy and a total cupcake!

Thanks for the new thread, OP.

So Wolf has a fanboy? He may not be trailer trash, but he sure looks like it.

Good nutrition has given him some length of bone, R5.

by Anonymousreply 9January 23, 2023 4:37 PM

Really sensational for Tommy Paul to beat RBA, wow. I just didn't think our Tommy had it in him. He's improved.

Thinking back to a chat I had last summer with a guy on Grindr who was a tennis player, said he saw Tommy naked in a locker room once and said he had a nice, big dick. So that's a lovely image.

Shelton is annoying, I agree, but fun for the game.

No one is beating Novak unless he gets injured. Wow--what a dismantling of Demon. Could Novak make a run at the calendar Slam again?

by Anonymousreply 10January 23, 2023 5:25 PM

I think JJWolf would be quicker around the court (and would therefore win more matches) if he got a smaller, lighter crucifix to hang around his neck. Still, you can never make it too obvious you're a bible basher.

by Anonymousreply 11January 23, 2023 5:25 PM

Three Americans in the quarters - and not even the top ranked ones - Fritz and Tiafoe. Not sure we have a future Slam Champ - but there’s a LOT of good Americans right now. Commentators seem to think Korda and Shelton are the best bet for future Slams - which doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be the most consistent tour players.

by Anonymousreply 12January 23, 2023 5:40 PM

Watching Djokovic-Demon highlights. Holy Jesus, did Novak play well.

by Anonymousreply 13January 23, 2023 5:43 PM

I love Shelton's energy and ebullience. Even if it's collegiate and over the top, it's all good spirited and he speaks intelligently about game strategy, etc.

One of the Tennis Podcast hosts interviewed Ben Shelton after his win. Said, despite the kid giving multiple back-to-back interviews, he was unfailingly polite, firm handshake, gave long answers to have question. He was really impressed with how Ben carried himself in all his press duties.

Also, Ben said Tommy is the player who has most taken him under his wing.

by Anonymousreply 43January 24, 2023 2:41 AM

by Anonymousreply 46January 24, 2023 2:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 47January 24, 2023 3:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 51January 24, 2023 4:25 AM

"Is Ben the United States-version of FAA?"

He's tall and biracial. So in that aspect he's the US FAA.

by Anonymousreply 52January 24, 2023 4:30 AM

Korda-Hemsworth is pretty boring. It's like they're STILL feeling each other out. So Seb has a wrist injury?

by Anonymousreply 53January 24, 2023 4:31 AM

I give Jelana Dokic's obesity a pass only because she was majorly abused by her father - like cruel torture - and ate to cope. Plus she stopped being a pro athlete, so there's that - not as many calories burned. She seems sweet.

by Anonymousreply 54January 24, 2023 4:34 AM

K. Hemsworth ahead 2-0.

by Anonymousreply 55January 24, 2023 4:36 AM

I think we might be looking at a Khachanov semi...

*giggles*

by Anonymousreply 56January 24, 2023 4:37 AM

Yep, looks like Alice band's dream run is going to end, especially with that wrist injury.

by Anonymousreply 57January 24, 2023 4:37 AM

"[R41], not even close. Ben wishes See, Ben is missing something Felix has, it's called Talent."

What ? They're three year and change apart, which is huge in tennis time. They both play incredibly straight forward games - not a lot of nuance. Big serves, big forehands. Shelton has gone from like No. 560 to No. 43 in a year. Felix really isn't that much more talented. Better looking, yes. More accomplished because he's been on tour longer, yes. But truly more talented? I doubt that. And I'm saying that as someone who knows that Ben is a nice person, yet he annoys the fuck out of me.

by Anonymousreply 58January 24, 2023 4:39 AM

Seb walkover.

by Anonymousreply 59January 24, 2023 4:50 AM

Karen's chest hair peeking out over the top of his colour is hot.

by Anonymousreply 60January 24, 2023 5:03 AM

Boring matches today.

The "teams" have probably already been posted for today, but for Pegula, I'd suggest "Billionaire Girl's Club team".

by Anonymousreply 61January 24, 2023 5:05 AM

Looks like Billionaire Girl is the fav against Azarenka. I think she'd give Rybakina more trouble in a semi-final - would keep the ball in play more so Rybakina would have to keep serving great since she has a better serve.

by Anonymousreply 62January 24, 2023 5:08 AM

Or she could be Heineken Beer Girl. She really is so unassuming for a billionaire's daughter.

by Anonymousreply 63January 24, 2023 5:11 AM

Felix (8/8/00) is just a couple of years older than Ben (10/9/02). It seems like more since Felix reached his first Challenger main draw eight years ago, and he's much more reserved and less demonstrative.

by Anonymousreply 64January 24, 2023 5:14 AM

I like Pegula. She's married and I'm wondering what the husband's situation is.

From Wiki:

"In 2021, Pegula married Taylor Gahagen, a corporate executive for Pegula Sports and Entertainment and an animal philanthropist.

In August 2016, it was announced that Pegula and her sister would be opening a quick-serve restaurant called Healthy Scratch in LECOM Harborcenter, an ice hockey-themed mixed-use development owned by her parents in Buffalo, New York. The Healthy Scratch business was to be expanded to food truck service in 2017. In 2017, Pegula introduced her own skin-care line called Ready 24."

This all sounds so "rich girl." A husband who works for her parents; "animal philanthropist," restaurant, skin care line.

She's like bizarro, not a bitch, Shiv Roy.

by Anonymousreply 65January 24, 2023 5:17 AM

R45, a half-dozen?

by Anonymousreply 67January 24, 2023 5:23 AM

Azarenka is playing so well - aggressive and accurate. Very enjoyable to watch so far but not good for poor Jess.

by Anonymousreply 68January 24, 2023 7:31 AM

Big Noise From Lehecka Team or Citybus/Greek Asshole Team?

by Anonymousreply 69January 24, 2023 7:50 AM

Shtefanosh Shitshipash.

by Anonymousreply 70January 24, 2023 7:53 AM

Citybus for me. I just need someone to be ABD (Anyone But Djokovic) and maybe - not likely but maybe - he can be ABD.

by Anonymousreply 71January 24, 2023 7:53 AM

Interesting stat there that Pegula stands significantly behind the baseline compared to Azarenka who on average actually is slightly in front of it. And when I see her come to the net which helps her finish off some points, I have a harder time imagining Pegula having the courage to do that either.

by Anonymousreply 72January 24, 2023 7:56 AM

R71 yeah, it's that stage of the tournament where actual preferences go out the window and you have to back whoever might beat either of The Great Satans Of Tennis: either NoVaxxx, or Kuntios (if he's actually bothering to play)

by Anonymousreply 73January 24, 2023 7:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 88January 24, 2023 9:52 PM

I'm not sure about the beating Novaxx thing. Sometimes I think it takes the cockiness of youth to take these guys down. Like Rune in Paris. Shelton has nothing to lose. Not that Tommy is old, but he's not a newcomer like Shelton. Anyway, I'd love to see Tommy take Novaxx out, just thinking out loud.

by Anonymousreply 90January 25, 2023 1:29 AM

Sabalenka advances. Who's the fat girl interviewing players post match?

by Anonymousreply 91January 25, 2023 3:06 AM

Jelena Dokic - former world No. 4, ex WTA player.

I said earlier in this thread - I sort of excuse her obesity. Rough upbringing and a truly crazy, abusive father/coach. I don't know, but I'm betting she ate to cope and then she stopped playing and the weight gain probably spiraled. In her book she talks about nearly committing suicide. Upside is she's not isolating herself - that she's comfortable enough to be big and having people make comments, yet still be in public, tells me she's in an okay headspace. Given everything she's been through, she's probably not that worried about being fat. Not saying she wants to be fat, but just that she's suffered much much worse.

by Anonymousreply 92January 25, 2023 3:12 AM

Thank you, R92.

by Anonymousreply 93January 25, 2023 3:13 AM

Would be great if Tommy could outgun Novaxx but very, very unlikely. Novaxx looks to be in top form. As for the ladies I hope Rybakina comes through - I cannot stand the noise generated by Sabalenka. She seems to screech before, during and after hitting the ball.

by Anonymousreply 144January 26, 2023 9:49 PM

I get Mary Woronov vibes from Sabalenka.

I’m with R143. I normally don’t like Citybus, but he has a better chance of beating Djokovic. So I’m Tsitsy team tonight. Normally I’d be K. Hemsworth team. I’m Tommy Team in the other match.

Bleh, not seeing anything that could trouble Djokovic so far in this match.

by Anonymousreply 152January 27, 2023 3:33 AM

Tsitsipas has an expressive face and I like to watch him think. Plus he's hot.

by Anonymousreply 153January 27, 2023 3:57 AM

Sweet Tommy all the way. R139 even if he is a bit dense. Lots of these commentators and captains he has worked with say he is very polite, respectful, and unassuming with good manners that you have to think he's a nice guy. J. McEnroe loves him cause he says he's a really good kid.

by Anonymousreply 154January 27, 2023 5:27 AM

I don't think Tommy is as good looking as some say on DL. He looks plain and common to me, but I do hope he beats "Nole".

by Anonymousreply 155January 27, 2023 5:32 AM

DL could only assume R155 looks like a movie star.

by Anonymousreply 156January 27, 2023 5:34 AM

I certainly do not. I do, however, find many of the other players sexier and better looking with a lot more spice. Tommy looks like a frat guy of the type that can be found on many U.S. college campuses. Objectively good looking but very common and plain, nothing interesting.

by Anonymousreply 158January 27, 2023 5:36 AM

So how many games do we think Tommy can get off Djokovic? The average so far has been 8.4. Will you take the over or under?

by Anonymousreply 159January 27, 2023 6:01 AM

Citybus through to final.

by Anonymousreply 165January 27, 2023 7:55 AM

NoVaxxx seems to get the luck even when he doesn't need it.

by Anonymousreply 166January 27, 2023 7:57 AM

Tommy looks very tight, and not just in the good way.

by Anonymousreply 167January 27, 2023 8:06 AM

Djoker lost his serve and now his leg hurts... allegedly.

by Anonymousreply 168January 27, 2023 8:29 AM

5-5 - 4 straight games for Tommy.

DARE WE DREAM?

(probably not)

by Anonymousreply 169January 27, 2023 8:37 AM

did anyone else see that - Djokovic appeared to inhale something from a squeezy plain white bottle. I expected him to drink from it but he didn't, he put the tip into his mouth and squeezed it while his head was down.

by Anonymousreply 170January 27, 2023 9:29 AM

R170, it’s hard to say that was an inhale, you can squeeze gels or semi-solids that way.

by Anonymousreply 171January 27, 2023 9:46 AM

R171 The bottle was a large plastic sports bottle type of bottle. No way was that gels or semi-solids. Looked like a big water bottle except with a tip at the end, like sauce bottles sometimes have. Very very odd.

by Anonymousreply 172January 27, 2023 9:59 AM

Oh, and after that happened, he handed it over to a ball kid (probably so that she could hand it back over to his team although I didn't see that part. Ball kid seemed poised to cross the court at least instead of going behind him to refill it or throw it away).

by Anonymousreply 175January 27, 2023 10:57 AM

That’s Novaxx’s “magic potion”, as he calls it. He has been caught on camera breathing in the contents of a sports bottle at various tournaments, and he’s never answered questions posed directly at pressers on the contents he snorts.

My theory is that it’s some alternative shit that probably occupies some grey area between doping and non-doping and that he probably believes it helps improve his chakras or meridians, or maybe even realigns the planets so they don’t allow him to be weakened by 5G cell towers trying to give him Covid. He’s one smart cookie, after all.

He’s one smart cookie, after all.

I doubt it. I recall way back in the day a gif doing the rounds showing Serena with a bottle with visible fumes emanating from it (I wish I knew how to find it now). It's probably some kind of banned stimulant. Hence getting the ball kids to liaise with his team to get it when on court too instead of him simply taking it on court with him.

by Anonymousreply 177January 27, 2023 11:07 AM

Another thing: check out these photos of Djokovic being handed a standard clear water bottle with pills taped onto it by his team while on court, assisted by ball kids again... so why is that happening whilst on court as well? Pills don't take up much room in a bag.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 178January 27, 2023 11:11 AM

R177, I’ve seen Serena furtively using an inhaler, perhaps that’s what you’re thinking of. I think that for most aerosols to have a impact, you need a propellant.

by Anonymousreply 179January 27, 2023 11:23 AM

R179 It definitely wasn't an inhaler. From what I remember it was a regular type of bottle with the top off and you could literally see fumes coming from it. One of the most insane things I've seen. I genuinely wish I could find it but I don't know how to.

He was born a cheat, and he’ll do whatever it takes to win.

by Anonymousreply 182January 27, 2023 12:08 PM

So Tommy won 8 games - just slightly below average. Surprisingly not-so-Young Grigor has got the most games off Djokovic so far (13).

by Anonymousreply 183January 27, 2023 12:32 PM

Each final airs at 3:30 AM EST. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 184January 27, 2023 1:02 PM

Big question: will getting up at t he crack of dawn be worth it for the men’s final? I’m not even going to bother asking the question for the women’s final.

by Anonymousreply 185January 27, 2023 1:09 PM

Djokovic and Tsitsipas are two of the players I like least on the Tour, and two of the biggest cheaters, so definitely not going to bother watching the men's final. Better Tsitipas than Null to take it, though.

by Anonymousreply 186January 27, 2023 1:38 PM

I haven't watched a single match this year. The whole tournament has felt like a 2-week long coronation of Djokovic 10th title. I won't watch the final either as I don't care for the players. And of course Tsitsipas is a headcase and would lose it from 6/2 6/2 5/1 30-0 (which is probably exactly where Djokovic wants to have him). Gah!

by Anonymousreply 187January 27, 2023 2:09 PM

R186 why don't you and the Novak haters start following Donald Young in Pickleball? Probably a better fit for your pea sized brain.

by Anonymousreply 188January 27, 2023 2:12 PM

We were waiting for you to turn up, r188 / Mr Mensa. Nobody thinks you’re stupid for liking Novaxx, but you just have to insult the intelligence of those who find him personally objectionable. Apples and trees = Novaxx fans and Novaxx.

by Anonymousreply 196January 27, 2023 9:26 PM

I think Titsy has the game to beat Novaxx.

The question is, does he have the head / nerves?

by Anonymousreply 197January 27, 2023 9:29 PM

R197, Titsy has a brilliant game, except for that weak backhand and a tendency to lose focus at odd moments. During his match against Lehecka (or whatever his name is), he suddenly went utterly blank for a point or two. A more experienced player would have capitalized on that.

R196, at this point, crowd toxicity fuels Djokovic. It got him over the finish line against Thiem.

by Anonymousreply 198January 27, 2023 9:39 PM

except for that weak backhand

His topspin BH is a good shot. He sometimes drops it short, but he doesn't miss a lot on it.

He should develop a good slice.

by Anonymousreply 199January 27, 2023 9:42 PM

"Big question: will getting up at t he crack of dawn be worth it for the men’s final? I’m not even going to bother asking the question for the women’s final."

I think if you love tennis, yes. If you hate Novak (as I do) and don't want to see him win, then no.

Tsitsipas technically has the physical game to make it a nominally competitive match, even take a set, and an outside chance of winning. I don't think he'll get destroyed as many on Talk Tennis (a robust tennis forum) seem to think. But, I see a looks-fairly-competitive-on-paper type score, but Tsitsipas never really ever gets a big enough lead (or a lead at all) or comes close enough to five sets to ever make it seem like Novak isn't going to win. 7-6, 6-4, 7-5, or 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 or something for Novak.

Citybus REALLY needs a consistent, low, knifing slice (like Fed or Steffi Graf) to bide his time to find position for his forehand. He has that slappy, inconsistent, high arch topspin backhand and he only throws in slices intermittently. Novak will pick on that.

We can only hope that getting closer to the Nadal's Slam total and winning his favorite Slam after being banned gets to Novak mentally, like his dismal performance against Medvedev at the US Open when he was trying to close out the Grand Slam. But, I don't think that's likely.

by Anonymousreply 200January 28, 2023 12:33 AM

R200, don’t mention “knifing”. It wounds.

by Anonymousreply 201January 28, 2023 12:41 AM

Rybakina team or Sabalenka team?

(Or I don’t care team?)

by Anonymousreply 202January 28, 2023 12:41 AM

^^ Haha, I suspect I'm the only one up and looking forward to the women's final.

The shock and awe final. Expect a lot of very short points. About 75% of points will probably be 0-4 shots.

Betting odds give Sabalenka the edge. She has an 0-3 HtH over Rybakina and is in good form (won the WTA Finals and then Adelaide this year). She has made 15 more errors than winners compared to 59 more for Rybakina on the way to the final.

In contrast, tennis fans seem to give Rybakina the edge. She will need to serve well which has statistically been better than Sabalenka's but it's probably primarily because she has already won a slam - Sabalenka's mentality is suspect on the biggest stages. Rybakina has beaten three former slam winners (Swiatek, Azarenka, Ostapenko) and one slam finalist (Collins) on her way to the final.

by Anonymousreply 203January 28, 2023 4:16 AM

Isn't Novak supposed to be "injured"

Dear God my ears! Sabalenka tone it way down doll.

by Anonymousreply 227January 28, 2023 10:38 AM

For me, today's match was the best of any women's Major final in recent history. Wow, Sabalenka had 51 winners to 28 unforced errors.

by Anonymousreply 228January 28, 2023 4:15 PM

Yeah, it was very good. For aggressive hitters, 50-50 ratio of UEs to winners is good tennis. This is very good/great tennis. And Sabalenka historically can play great tennis and also play pitiful tennis after going off the rails. So this was a nice surprise.

The women’s final was what Mary Carillo used to call Big Babe Tennis. My least favorite style of play. Each player stands on the baseline and bangs the &*#@ out of the ball. No style, no finesse, no touch. Just NO.

by Anonymousreply 276January 29, 2023 12:37 PM

Titsipas just didn’t have the mental toughness - rather fragile actually. He needs to find a coach who is not his father. If he keeps dad he’ll always come up second best with the occasional solid performance.

Mildly interesting - Jelena and his kids weren't at the AO but his parents were for the first time in 15 years.

Their marriage seemed to be in trouble before Covid and then I noticed that their shared anti-vax sentiment seemed to bring them closer but it may be reverting now.

I wonder why Nole was so agitated? Poor old VisciousFannyItch got quite the tongue lashing on a few occasions. He was so delighted at the end when Nole approached his box of supporters - I guess his salary is safe for a while yet. I would have bitch-slapped Nole into the middle of next month for directing that behaviour at me.

That in short is why I will never be Nole’s coach.

by Anonymousreply 288January 29, 2023 4:18 PM

Today I learned that having no patience for Russian sympathizers is virtue signaling.

Novaxx is a phenomenal tennis player. He’s easily one of the greatest male players of all time.

He’s also a vile piece of shit.

by Anonymousreply 289January 29, 2023 4:19 PM

Please show me one tiny bit of evidence of Sabalenka being pro-Putin.

by Anonymousreply 290January 29, 2023 4:20 PM

A true GOAT is respected for his achievements, thereby taking Novaxx out of the conversation completely. No matter how he tries to frame it, he did try to cheat his way in to the Grand Slam last year in Australia. And just like any health professional will tell you, when the patient tells you one or two drinks a day, assume at least twice as much in reality.

by Anonymousreply 296January 29, 2023 5:44 PM

Djokovic's head has grown big enough to draw attention away from the other three atrophied items.

by Anonymousreply 297January 29, 2023 5:54 PM

Yeah, I hate Novak. It's not just his personality. I can't stand his boring game. (Unlike Fed, who I rooted agains, but marveled at.)

But he's the GOAT. Most slams, most masters 1000s, most weeks at number one, most year end number ones. Winning record against Rafa (barely) and Fed.

It's Novak, Rafa, Fed, in that order, now.

UGGGHHH.

by Anonymousreply 298January 29, 2023 5:54 PM

R290, Sabalenko has long come across as quite likable. She and her team have a fun vibe.

Yes, she is on good terms with the President of Belarus but that’s likely just a function of being a sports star in her country.

Hell, I live in the US and, for four years, I wondered what my non-US colleagues thought of me as they followed the exploits of our corrupt despot.

I was stunned at the willingness of people to accept the word of a disgruntled (and deranged) former leader and not care about finding the truth. (You’ve no idea the extent of it.)

So I’m hoping we can be a little more careful in casting aspersions. You can write anything he lots will take it as gospel.

by Anonymousreply 305January 29, 2023 8:55 PM

I don't love Sabalenka's game (I prefer finesse players, like Barty), but I gotta give the bitch credit. She went from serving double-digit double faults to the Oz title. She's very likeable in her interviews and she behaves herself on court.

Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 306January 29, 2023 9:05 PM

R300, I'm realistic. Rafa just fell off the cliff. Happens to every major athlete. He can surely win another French. But that's it. And Novak has just about every other record and clearly is nowhere near the cliff.

So even if Rafa ends up tied or one ahead? Novak will still get GOAT status for everything else.

If Rafa was 34 instead of 36? He'd have a great shot. But reality is reality. Even if I hate it!

"Surely"? He was on his last legs starting at Wimbledon last year and he's never got back to normal. He could win the French again, but I don't think the chances are all that good. I was happy he got two Slams last year when it looked like he may finish with 20 Slams. I wonder how he approaches the year. Will he even bother with the late winter/spring hard court season or just try to recover and get in better shape and get ready for clay season in the hopes of adding another French?

by Anonymousreply 310January 29, 2023 10:09 PM

Not a big Nadal guy here but I have to give it up to him. This guy has a will that I’ve never seen in sports. He can mentally will himself to push through anything. What a champion mindset.

That said, it appears he my have hit a wall that he can’t scale, but I’ve seen him pull him body out of the fire many times.

by Anonymousreply 316January 30, 2023 2:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 317January 30, 2023 2:19 AM

R317 Well, yeah, the way she treats ball boys and girls. I thought that was obvious. Especially since I linked to a video of an example of it.

by Anonymousreply 318January 30, 2023 2:34 AM

R310, I think Rafa has earned a "surely" when discussing his chances at the FO. Whether he's in form or not. Old or not.

(I mean, I said he fell off the cliff. Why you'd nitpick the word surely is odd.)

by Anonymousreply 319January 30, 2023 3:45 AM

R308, I also noticed Mateo. He's a dreamboat, isn't he? Those gorgeous eyes. He's what propelled me to watch his last two mixed doubles matches.

While searching for matches toward the end of AO, I discovered the #10 Japanese women's doubles team, and they were an absolute delight to watch, particularly their dynamic poaching. They were a delight to watch.

by Anonymousreply 320January 30, 2023 9:52 AM

Sabs reminds me a bit of Ginny Wade, who really was a terror. She called ballgirls fat and slow, scowled at umpires, would mutter nasty comments to her opponent when they were both at net. I loved her. She was just as high strung as Sabs, and bore the burden of being England's best hope during the Open era at Wimbledon. Sabs is tame compared to Ginny. She's not a snoozy bore like Barty or Iga.

The 27-year-old's guilty plea in a Canberra court came after his lawyers failed to have the charge dismissed on mental health grounds.

Mr Kyrgios pushed Chiara Passari onto the pavement during a row in Canberra in 2021, the court heard.

The magistrate called the incident "a single act of stupidity or frustration" when sparing him a criminal record.

Agreed facts tendered to the court say Mr Kyrgios pushed Ms Passari after after she stopped his car from driving away while they were arguing on 10 January 2021."

Late last year, I had a chance meeting with one of his visiting friends. They met via basketball, and they're at least close enough for him to have Kyrios's text information. I asked the friend a few questions, and the friend answered them for me. He said Kyrios is extremely competitive in basketball, has an explosive temper, enjoys his friends (his friend said he's overly generous to the point some take advantage of him, so he's very pleasantly surprised when a friend buys him a drink, for example). When I asked about the allegations, he made a face and suggested that he and another friend aren't certain of it, but, sadly, wouldn't be surprised.

So, in short, basically what many of us already surmised about him.

by Anonymousreply 363February 3, 2023 5:38 PM

The way Henin ended her career after losing to Dinara Safina always felt fishy af. Just a week before the French Open where she was by far and large the favorite. But then again I may not be quite objective when it comes to JH(A) as I really started to actively loath her after she stole Amélie the opportunity to win her first grand slam title fair and square by retiring after being trashed by the Frenchwoman 6-1 and 2-0. I'm grateful the gods of tennis aligned these two women in the Wimbledon final six months later so that Amélie could eventually get her second (and last) grand slam title after actually beating JHA fair and square.

by Anonymousreply 364February 4, 2023 7:39 AM

by Anonymousreply 376February 4, 2023 4:07 PM

How many slams would Novaxx have if he were American? 30? Roddick only won because of favorable scheduling. Novaxx was ALWAYS given the worst schedule, Fedal/Misery/Williams and Servebot American were always given a preference, based on popularity.

From the Guardian US OPEN 2003

-Roger Federer was an angry man - angry at losing in the fourth round of the US Open to David Nalbandian of Argentina, angry at missing the opportunity to become the world No1 and angry at the way the scheduling has overtly favoured Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick to the detriment of everybody else.

Agassi managed a two-day break before yesterday's quarter-finals and Roddick one. All the other six players faced the possibility of having to win four five-set matches on four successive days if they are to be crowned champion tomorrow.

by Anonymousreply 400February 7, 2023 6:37 AM

Novak is "only" 35 (remember when players were done by 30?) and he looks to be in fairly good health. I see a lot of people online predicting at least three more years of dominance and a career Slam total of between 26 and 30. At 35, the steep career drop could come at any time - the later the age the more steep and sudden the drop it is. But still, as much as I don't like him, I think he's really going to separate himself in terms of Slams in the immediate coming years.

by Anonymousreply 401February 7, 2023 6:44 AM

R401, his endurance and stamina and final GS tally will no doubt depend on how many more magic potions he’ll be allowed to inhale on court.

[quote]Djokovic with a career Slam total of between 26 and 30

I don't see it happening but I would love it to happen just to see the face of Prissy Pants not GOAT after all and the giant comfort food binges of Orka and all the Prissy fans who didn't take kindly to the fact that not only their hero was no longer the indisputable GOAT but only a co-GOAT but then ruthlessly relegated to third best and the length the fanboys are willing to go to make it appear he's still the best anyway because of a convenient rule they just added to meet criteria. For instance I hear a lot of whining (on some WareHouse tennis forum) that the last slam titles of Djokodal cannot possibly count as they were won during the lost gen era.

I think that whoever reaches 30 GS titles and above will be GOAT for a long long time.

I met Pauline Betz Addie at my old tennis club. Her son was our head pro, and she was terrific. Caught in a lost era when WWII curtailed her career. I asked her if she could have beaten Martina or Steffi (this was 1990ish), and she said sure. The racquets they used would only give them so much of an advantage. If you go this route, Lenglen beat Wills who beat Jacobs who beat Marble who beat Betz who beat Brough who beat Osborne duPont who beat Hart who beat Connolly who beat Fry who beat Gibson who beat Bueno who beat Smith Court who beat King who beat Evert who beat Navratilova who beat Graf who beat Serena. You can reverse it (add Mola Mallory in) to find she beat Lenglen, and eras are great, but it's the ball that counts.

R406, I would bet most anything that Pauline Betz Addie could not beat Martina or Steffi. Wood rackets had major limitations and even if allowing for equipment technology, the athletes of today are leaps and bounds superior to her era (and preceding eras). I know it's not possible or maybe even fair, and mostly frustrating, that we can never see Chris Evert play Helen Wills. Serena play Hart. All sorts of matchups that sound wonderful.

A few days ago, my youtube feed suggested some videos that I followed of primarily Althea Gibson, Maureen Connolly, Louise Brough, and, I think Shirley Fry. These videos were not grainy, and several games were shown in I thought pretty good quality. From that 1952 to 1958 range, I THINK Gibson would have defeated Connolly. Making it more current, not only would today's top women pros like Swiatek and Jabeur wiped the court with Connolly, so too would Evert and Navratilova. Many others. In fact, given the transformation in physicality, I also think that the much lower ranked players of today, and even top college players would ALSO defeat Connolly (and Wills and Lengelen). DL makes a lot of fun of Taylor Townsend, but I'd definitely include her in the mix. If some can't wrap their minds around that, then say, Rybakina, Fernandez, Collins, even lower ranked players. I think this would also be true from several years prior.

I'm sure Betz Addie had great pride, and that served her well in her era, but Navratilova and Graf would have destroyed her. I recall watching a US Open final, I think 1993, and Alice Marble presented the trophies, and she graciously volunteered something along the lines that Graf and Sukova would "wipe the court with me."

by Anonymousreply 409February 7, 2023 12:53 PM

by Anonymousreply 410February 7, 2023 12:58 PM

Interesting that ChatGPT would rank Steffi Graf behind Navratilova when the consensus is that in contemporary tennis Serena is number 1, ahead of Graf staying at number 2, ahead of Navratilova staying at number 3, and Chris just behind Navratilova at number 4.

The only reason for this ranking would be an asterisk next to Graf's name, named Monica. And I would tend to agree with it. You just have to look how close Fat Monica (the other one) stood behind the power games of the Williams sisters or Graf to know that she would have been able to beat them as Thin 'n' Thirsty Monica®.

Not anything to do with today's players, but the Courier-Edberg 1991 USO final highlights was in my youtube feed (I watch a lot of past and present highlight clips). Arthur Fils really is cute, and a nice ass. As with every young player who makes a run (and so far this is merely a SF run at 250 level tournament), it'll be interesting to see if it pans out and he has a consistent career, and at what level - Top 50, Top 20, Top 10, Slam champion - or if they have a journeyman career, or a bit of both.

by Anonymousreply 455February 12, 2023 10:14 PM

Isner's like an unkillable zombie.

Just when you think his ranking and form are in freefall he goes and gets to the final or even wins some random tournament, and continues to hang around like a bad smell in the Top 40 for yet another year.

by Anonymousreply 456February 12, 2023 10:47 PM

As long as he can serve like he does, Isner will have a chance at match wins and small titles like Dallas. The rest of his game never was good enough to win Masters or Slams, and now he's even further from his peak. But that sort of serve - he can hang around for a long time. I'm sort of surprised he doesn't hook up with some mobile, great returner/volleyer and play doubles. Though, it's a lot of time and effort to play both singles and doubles; and he's already 37. If he wanted to JUST play doubles, he could probably do so until he's 43 with the right partner.

I don't see Coco's dad in Qatar, Mom, Agent and hot coach in the box. Did she cut him loose, and tell him to get a real job?

by Anonymousreply 478February 15, 2023 12:32 PM

Mom Gauff is just as scowly and negative as the dad. Coco needs to tell both of them to get their own lives.

by Anonymousreply 479February 15, 2023 2:36 PM

Coco really should get non-parent coaches and have her parents cut back on traveling with her. I get that she's their kid and they did so much to get her where she is, but it's time. First, the dad isn't a great coach. I know she has other coaches, but still - he's there and probably has opinions about everything. If she wants to get to another level she needs a full-time real coach who is independent of her dad. Second, I think she just needs some time away from her parents to learn independence. I'm not saying they should never go to tournaments, but they don't have to constantly be there. Maybe learning to fend for herself a little more will help her on court too. She has a baby brother - go raise him.

by Anonymousreply 480February 15, 2023 4:23 PM

Also, if your parent is a coach or otherwise on staff as part of the player's entourage, then it can get dicey because you have to pay them. Not that it hasn't been done successfully, but there's just huge potential for tension. Coco was a minor when she started so I assume all the money runs through her parents. Now that she's 18 and as she gets older is she going to have her own opinion about "I don't want to pay you for this. Just be my parents"? The Dad seems to have altered his entire life to make his daughter a pro player, so is he going to expect a check, expect her to support him and mom for the rest of her career - no matter what role he is or isn't playing?

by Anonymousreply 481February 15, 2023 4:28 PM

She needs to get a restraining order against her parents

by Anonymousreply 482February 16, 2023 1:09 AM

I haven't heard of any abuse. Not that we necessarily would. But annoying and overbearing tennis parents are pretty normal, so restraining order seems like a jump unless they actually did something.

Anyway, I just found out how much the camera loves Maxime Cressy. No he doesn't have blond leg hair like Shapo and no he doesn't have moles all over his face like Musetti but at least he has the cutest freckles. Add to this the diversity his idiosyncratic sense of playing brings to the game and the fact that i really miss another giant (JMDP) and transference onto Isner was just not an option (for so many reasons), so I say what's not to love and what's not to root for?

I should've written "Il Gingio team or Griekspoor team??

by Anonymousreply 527February 18, 2023 7:01 PM

I was Tallon-ted Team. Great match - much closer than I expected. This could be Griekspoor's breakout year. He's in great form so far.

The Octopus Vs Il Gingio should at least be an entertaining final.

Felix's girlfriend looks relatively 'unbimbo'. Then again, Felix generally seems to have more cultured tastes than most ATP dunderheads.

by Anonymousreply 550February 19, 2023 4:16 PM

Not a big Medvedev fan but at least his return to form - along with Carlitos coming back strong - means we might get some actual resistance to a NoVaxxx tsunami over the coming season.

In other news, Big Jack D pulls out of Doha with a leg injury. I'm getting concerned that he's turning into the male Emma Raducanu. Seems to be far too many injuries happening to him over the past 12 months. The LTA really needs to take a look at their coaching set-up as they really don't seem to be handling their young talents at all well.

by Anonymousreply 551February 19, 2023 4:19 PM

"I'm getting concerned that he's turning into the male Emma Raducanu."

He wishes. For all of her non-performance, she managed to make her single title a Slam, which is fairly nuts. Draper may end up having a nice overall career, but he won't sniff a Slam.

Nick Kyrgios springs to the defence of Matteo Berretini after the Italian star was criticised by a tennis legend for caring too much about sponsors: 'For some of us, money is important'

Former two-time Grand Slam champion Nicola Pietrangeli blasted the young Italian after his surprise first-round defeat to Andy Murray at the Australian Open.

'He is handsome but his legs don't move the way they should on court,' the 89-year-old told Gazetta dello Sport.

The Italians haven't had a male Grand Slam champion since 1976 when Adriano Panatta won the French Open. Currently Jannik Sinner is their top ranked player.

Kyrgios, who previously was in a relationship with Berrettini's ex-girlfriend Ajla Tomljanovic, took to Twitter to defend Berrettini, arguing that he can do what he wants.

'Isn't it his choice to prioritise?' said Kyrgios.

'I can assure you this, he is making more bank than Sinner off the court and for some of us, money is important.'

Berrettini is very popular with advertisers and has his own clothing range with fashion giant Hugo Boss. He has also won over $10million in prize money from tennis.

by Anonymousreply 575February 21, 2023 12:30 PM

Oh don't worry your vacant little head about it, Kuntios. By the time he's your age Sinner will have made many times your earnings in prize money and endorsements, and you will be living as a clownish footnote in the annals of Tennis History. A less successful Nastase.

by Anonymousreply 576February 21, 2023 12:47 PM

...and Sinner will bore everyone as much as your precious not-HAWT Felix Ugly Allamess-eemer.

by Anonymousreply 577February 21, 2023 12:57 PM

I'm not a particular fan of Sinner...or Felix come to that... just stating the inevitable.

Kyrgios is a joke and a clown, and the circus will quickly move on from him. Serious players who put in the hard work will ultimately reap the bigger rewards.
