[quote]“It is with great sadness after a long illness, that our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away. He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us. His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly. At this time, we respectfully and kindly ask for privacy as we grieve and try to deal with our profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers.”

There's a cool story about the photograph from Crosby Stills and Nash first album.
IIRC, they drove around LA all day with a photographer, taking photos for their first album cover. They took this famous photo that became the cover of their first album at an abandoned house that they happened to be driving by.
When the photographer showed them all the photos, they agreed that this was the picture for the album, but they were sitting in the wrong order - Nash, Stills, and Crosby, instead of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. They were afraid the order would create confusion about the newly-formed band's name.
The photographer suggested they just reverse the negative, but Stills pointed out that his guitar would be backwards if they reversed the photo.
They finally agreed that they would all get back in the car, drive back to the abandoned house, and retake the photo with the band members sitting in the correct order to represent the band's name.
But when they got to there, the abandoned house that had been sitting vacant for years had been torn down.

The eerie thing was, I was just thinking about him earlier today.
Was thinking about how so many female performers in rock had record companies get so twisted about how they looked, especially if they weren't slutty vamps like Samantha Fox or the like that made them easy to promote.
Crosby was as fug as the day is long but no one ever said, "Oh, we can't put him on the album cover!" Same with that hideous Blues Traveler band and that fuggo lead singer.

I was born in 1969 and my mom and dad were actual hippies (as in pot smoking, natural food, armpit hair loving, garden growing, went to lots of live music going hippies). They had a HUGE vinyl collection of all kinds of music, and I was mostly in charge of picking the music and the soundtrack of the evening or weekend day as we pretty much never watched tv.
I would put on their albums often. I loved the way they sounded, how they harmonized, the variety of their songs.
Thanks for being part of the soundtrack of my youth, man. You had your faults, but your tunes and singing made me realize how much I loved music and loved to sing.

Great musician, brilliant harmonizer, co-founded not one but two seminal American bands, the Byrds and CSNY.
Crazy, insanely wild life: born to immense privilege (both parents descended from high East Coast Society), his father was an Oscar-winning cinematographer but Crosby was so bonkers he couldn't finish high school. Steady session player who parlayed this into enormous success with his two groups, he descended into a decadent life of drugs/booze that would have killed lesser individuals. He bounced back, cleaned up, got a new liver, married his only wife of 35+ years, reconciled with his kids, and made great music right up until the end.
His twitter account won him a bunch of new fans, he was an active user and his tweets were piquant, funny and often spot on. Quite a character. They don't make them like him, anymore.

I think Joni's "hatred" of Crosby has been exaggerated.
She did have a few snarks at him over the years - Crosby was a bragging egomaniac and so was Joni (!) - but they appear to have been on good terms in recent years.

R149 I was mistaken for a hippy many times because I have very thick hair, wore the bells, right type of shirts etc but in the sixties to be a hippy did not mean just the dress, or even doing drugs, it meant the outlook, which included hating materialism, they did not like rock songs played to advertise products, for instance, too commercial, they did believe in free love, they did not care if you were straight or gay, that was your business, drugs were for mind expansion, anti-estabilshment. It all got so corporate later on and now everyone who looks like a Manson family member is a hippie, but really that was not what a hippy was. It's kind of lost to time, the real meaning.

Didn't Melissa Ethridge have her partner get impregnated with Crosby's sperm? I recall a Rolling Stone cover with her and her partner and the two children they made with Crosby's jism. But why on earth would they use HIS jism? He was never good looking and was a hard core druggie. I guess they thought the kids would inherit his "talent." But I don't think they did.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | January 20, 2023 3:12 AM |
[quote]He was a druggie creep. One of his wives said he'd come back from a tour and tell her all about the great sex he'd had while on the road. She would get upset and cry, and he would get angry at HER, telling her "You're supposed to be happy for me!" Yes, he was an asshole creep.
A straight privileged hippie being a complete jerk? That's unpossible!
Seriously, the hippie movement kindled Women's Lib and women's separatism when the female hippies discovered the men expected them to bake the bread and tend to the kids — just like their fathers expected of their mothers.

[quote] I thought he discovered Joni. Or was that an exaggeration also
This was a point of conflict and one of the reasons Joni would smack him down from time to time!
He didn't discover her overall, but he did, I think, bring her to the Troubadour crowd and his friends when he did hear her music. And yes, he did produce her first album.
For a time he was all "oh, I created her" but clearly Joni brought her own talent. A thing he should have remembered when "Woodstock" was a big hit for them.

R189 Yeah Grace Slick said in her autobiography that she married her much younger roadie boyfriend. Ponytail, motorbike, wore her dresses when he ran out of clean clothes, very “liberal” Surprise they get married and 6 months later he wants her to have a baby and stay home.
Straight dudes all want a wife who is home with the babies, cooking and cleaning, and then hot babes on the side. Tale as old as time and why we’ll never make that much progress with gender equality because men will always want a system that can’t work unless there are 4 women born for every 1 man. Or polygamy but then the majority of men who will never get any action go crazy and make the country a violent unlivable hole and the dudes with 5 wives wrap them in sheets to stop other dudes stealing them.

The counterculture definitely led to the women’s movement. The culture in the 50s somewhat protected women because sex before marriage was was not seen as acceptable. Hippie free love basically obligated women to be promiscuous. Women’s lib was a backlash to that.

True r121 but I found it hard to believe that a man who lived through an era where 1000 hippies were painting his portrait a day thought THAT portrait was the worst he'd ever seen. Crosby was incredibly gifted and at heart a good guy, but he went for the jugular immediately, escalating things when they didn't need to be. No wonder everyone just finally had enough of him over the years.

He had serious coronary artery disease and type II diabetes, in addition to the borrowed liver. In his documentary, he talked about how he knew his days were numbered.
He even had a song on his final album about his impending demise, written by his musician son.
I loved listening to him being interviewed, especially in his later years, when he had no fucks left to give and just let it fly.

I listened to a few albums of his last night, reminding me that he truly was and will remain, a legend.
Kids, if you have yet to discover the musical genius, paired with a decent dose of humility, that is Crosby, Stills, & Nash (along with Neil Young - depending on the album), I highly recommend that you do just that.
Grab your iPhone/iPad/AirBook, & play their music. Do it ALONE, without any distractions, & check them out.
If you have a heart, you will not regret investing your precious time in this proposed endeavor.

I hadn't been paying attention but I guess he was aware he was dying sometime in the near term.
The title track of his final album "For Free" is a Joni song, one about wishing to escape the bounds of the music business and just enjoy the moment of playing for the passion of it.

R178 His talent delivered a lot of beautiful music in these last few years - I was too cool for school during the day; after The Byrds I didn't give him much appreciation - CSN were "too on the nose", and only when Young ripped up their smooth folk-rock with some ragged glory rock and roll did I listen. I hated Nash's saccharine voice and "cute" songs.
But Crosby didn't die. He hung on, and while always a stoner, walked through and away from hard drugs and became a more interesting person as a result of surviving. In the last few years, after seven decades of life, he made beautiful music. I listened to silly podcasts on the Rolling Stone website where he answered questions, an aural advice column. He was so funny and so wise... and old hippie who effortlessly, with gentle assurance, kept his values, dreams and hungers. He hungered for peace, inside his own heart, on our planet, among generations and nations. He left life with a sweetness and grace. The hippie dream.
I listened today to his first solo album, "If Only I Could Remember My Name", for the first time in 50 years. I dismissed it at the time: slight, folkish background music. It is, now, heard through decades of living, to be ethereal, mysterious, timeless music. Who knew? Thanks for the beauty, Croz. Fuck all the rest, float off to your bliss.

Online it says he was a Pacifist, but heh, fought with everybody. I found it interesting he questioned the Warren Commission but hey, back then especially so did everybody. Crosby wrote in response to a pro-union tweet from Biden that "most Unions are useless and totally dishonest." Well, that's for sure.

[quote]I listened today to his first solo album, "If Only I Could Remember My Name",
That is a brilliant record and totally worth a listen. It's up on YouTube.
Crosby had such a close relationship with his oldest son, who was given up for adoption as a baby but later reunited with DC as a young adult. They went on to make a lot of music together, and tour together in their own band. But yet he wasn't mentioned in Jan Crosby's statement yesterday, and none of the condolences coming in seem to mention him or the other kids either - Neil Young's statement today only mentions Jan and their son Django, as did Graham Nash's. I wonder what is up.
They were still very close because the eldest son was posting photos of him w/DC on his recent social media.

R167, they likely chose Crosby because they wanted to breed a musician, and music is something that the kid could share in common with Etheridge. I wonder if they pressured the kid to learn the guitar.
I wonder how involved Crosby was with the kids he sired through sperm donation. Even if you knew your bio dad and your two moms looked at your existence as a business arrangement, it would suck to see your bio-dad being photographed out in public with his other son who was just a few years older than you.

There was a recent interview with Nash where it was revealed he’s estranged from his children. Probably because he left his wife of decades for a young woman. It’s ironic that Crosby who gave up his first son for adoption established a very close relationship with him a years later. Life can be so unpredictable.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | January 21, 2023 3:06 AM |
Crosby has 4 kids with four different women. And that was before he donated sperm to Etheridge and Cypher.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | January 21, 2023 6:00 AM |
It is ironic that Crosby was with his only wife for nearly 40 years, married to her for 35, after years of hardcore carousing and screwing around, while his bandmates Stills, Nash and Young all were married multiple times (3x for Stills) and in the case of Nash and Young famously and publicly left their long-term wives for younger women.
One of the main reasons for Crosby's estrangement from Young and the two others was his public criticism of Young's relationship with Darryl Hannah. He distrusted Hannah and her previous accusations of abuse at Jackson Browne, and also was miffed for Young's long-suffering wife Pegi, who was suffering from cancer and died a few years later. Crosby's father had left his own mother for his mistress once their kids were grown, with his mother also passing away later alone from cancer, so that may have resonated with him - he never kept his opinions to himself.

David's father was Floyd Crosby, the Hollywood cinematographer who shot High Noon and took home one of the first Academy Awards for cinematography for his work on F.W. Murnau’s silent film Tabu: A Story of the South Seas.
Floyd Crosby was also a descendant of the Van Rensselaer family, which remained prominent in New York for many generations. Young David grew up in luxury in Santa Barbara...

About Joni:
Among other things, he (David Crosby) helped bring Joni Mitchell to Warner Bros., a label grasping to be hip at the time but still unsure about this sui generis singer-songwriter who defied categorization. Crosby lent his name as the ostensible producer of her first album, Song to a Seagull. (Mitchell would later say she didn’t like the way Crosby paraded her around as if she were his discovery.)
They dated for a while, too...
