The theme from Dallas
I love this opening credit sequence and theme song.
This is a very eldergay thing to say, but Dallas had the best prime time soap theme music of any of the big, glitzy soaps of that era.
And I love how they kept working on it! Every season they would change a note here or there … but it never lost its essence.
It gets a 10 out of 10 rating from me, dawg.

I loved original Southfork. I laugh at the first Ewing BBQ. Pam bar shouldered and it's plainly winter or early spring.

In college, a friend made up lyrics for the main melody part:
_______
Oh Dal-las, DAL-las!
They live in a palace
That they call Sou-outhfork! (Southfork!)
You know there's malice
When you watch 'Dallas'
And then you see J.R.!
With PAM, and BOB-by, and Mi-iss Ellie
And her husband Clayton Farlow! (Clayton Farlow!)
____
There's more, but I forgot the rest.

Dallas' theme is memorable, but musically, Falcon Crest's was my favorite.

I completely agree with R3. Both the Falcon Crest and Dynasty themes were more elegant. The Dallas theme belonged in an action movie.

r4 I love all those theme tunes and Knots Landing too but I feel the Dallas themetune really conveyed the epic power of saga best. Almost shakesperean feel.

Yes, it is a good TV theme song - peppy and exciting. I didn't watch Dallas until the Who Shot JR stuff came up. So, I never realized the changes made, over the years, to the intro. The very first one sounded a bit like Theme from Shaft.

No opinion on the music, but Jim Davis was a big sexy beast. Neither of his sons had an ounce of his testosterone-fueled quiet swagger.

That wouldn't be that unusual for Dallas in the winter. It was 78 degrees in Dallas today, January 17.

I never watched Dallas as regularly as I did Dynasty and Knot’s Landing, but I did go through spells where I watched ..,but obviously not much toward the end, because I have NO idea who Kimberly Foster and Sheree Wilson are supposed to be.
I forgot that they brought Charlene Tilton back for a couple of seasons. I don’t remember what her story was. Also shocked that Donna was there that long. And WOW was Priscilla beautiful.
For some reason, I thought Linda Gray was there the whole time, but obviously not. Everyone can agree that Sue Ellen was the best character, right?

r23 Sue Ellen left Summer of 1989.The show ended two years later. I think that was a huge loss of the back of losing both Pam and Donna two years earlier.I always felt it a mistake they didnt axed Donna played by Susan Howard the same season Pam left.I think losing both was too much and Donna was rich with potential.

I never understood why Susan HOWARD was in the main credit sequence while other characters with far more screen time were relegated to the Southfork overlay at the end of the episode. Susan HOWARD was a complete nonentity on this show.

r32 It took her a good few seasons before she was put into the main credits.Sometimes Miss Ellie only made a handful of appearances per episode but was still included in main credits ditto Sherre J Wilson in the final season when her character April Stevens died about 4 episodes in.

The reason is money and contracts. Technically, the actors posted after the main title sequence were not relegated. They were rather not yet promoted. I think on average it took an actor two seasons to get added to the main credits. Either that or you were discarded altogether. The typical way to move up was starting as a guest star. They see potential, so next season you get an "Also Starring". After two more seasons, you are added to main title or out.
Some exceptions apply. I think at the end of Dallas' run, they added everybody and their brother to the main title sequence in lieu of money. Hey, we cannot pay you shit anymore, but at least you look important as an actor who carries the show."

I'm watching this from season one. In the past watched on and off. Sue Ellen really does stand out from the beginning. The scene where attempted rapists invade Southfork and make her dress up in her Ms. Texas bathing suit and sing people who need people is great acting but also hilarious. The show also has much more of a neo western feel than I remember.

R35, I never watched Dallas save for the opening credits, and that was to catch a glimpse of Steve Kanaly in his cowboy hat.
Quarts of adolescent jizz shot over this silver fox.
Ditto for Gregory Harrison stepping out of the shower in Trapper John MD.

R15 No. I'm not fat. Because I am more of a country person and Dallas is too much of a city even though the show makes it out to be like some kind of cowboy ranch plantation or something, it's really not. R50 got it right.
