The theme from Dallas

I love this opening credit sequence and theme song.

This is a very eldergay thing to say, but Dallas had the best prime time soap theme music of any of the big, glitzy soaps of that era.

And I love how they kept working on it! Every season they would change a note here or there … but it never lost its essence.

It gets a 10 out of 10 rating from me, dawg.

I loved original Southfork. I laugh at the first Ewing BBQ. Pam bar shouldered and it's plainly winter or early spring.

by Anonymousreply 1January 18, 2023 1:06 AM

In college, a friend made up lyrics for the main melody part:

_______

Oh Dal-las, DAL-las!

They live in a palace

That they call Sou-outhfork! (Southfork!)

You know there's malice

When you watch 'Dallas'

And then you see J.R.!

With PAM, and BOB-by, and Mi-iss Ellie

And her husband Clayton Farlow! (Clayton Farlow!)

____

There's more, but I forgot the rest.

by Anonymousreply 2January 18, 2023 1:08 AM

Dallas' theme is memorable, but musically, Falcon Crest's was my favorite.

by Anonymousreply 3January 18, 2023 1:29 AM

I completely agree with R3. Both the Falcon Crest and Dynasty themes were more elegant. The Dallas theme belonged in an action movie.

by Anonymousreply 4January 18, 2023 1:31 AM

r4 I love all those theme tunes and Knots Landing too but I feel the Dallas themetune really conveyed the epic power of saga best. Almost shakesperean feel.

by Anonymousreply 5January 18, 2023 1:34 AM

Yes, it is a good TV theme song - peppy and exciting. I didn't watch Dallas until the Who Shot JR stuff came up. So, I never realized the changes made, over the years, to the intro. The very first one sounded a bit like Theme from Shaft.

by Anonymousreply 6January 18, 2023 1:36 AM

No opinion on the music, but Jim Davis was a big sexy beast. Neither of his sons had an ounce of his testosterone-fueled quiet swagger.

by Anonymousreply 7January 18, 2023 1:43 AM

Dallas was well done, as was Falcon Crest.

But

There simply is no comparison to the finest one.

by Anonymousreply 9January 18, 2023 2:19 AM

oh god, the theme to Dallas. Put me nearly in a trance with my heart pounding it was so good.

by Anonymousreply 10January 18, 2023 2:24 AM

The Dallas theme song has a Western feel.

by Anonymousreply 11January 18, 2023 2:25 AM

Yes, R11, it felt (sounded) very Texas, as Dynasty felt very fucking rich.

by Anonymousreply 12January 18, 2023 2:26 AM

OMG! Ana Alicia twirled in season 2! A full season before Susan twirled! This is MAJOR!!!

I identified with those cows in the Dallas theme.

Because you're fat?

by Anonymousreply 15January 18, 2023 2:53 AM

[quote]Pam bar (sic) shouldered and it's plainly winter or early spring.

That wouldn't be that unusual for Dallas in the winter. It was 78 degrees in Dallas today, January 17.

by Anonymousreply 16January 18, 2023 3:06 AM

But you wouldn't give a big outdoor BBQ in winter.

by Anonymousreply 17January 18, 2023 3:07 AM

R15 It's probably because he releases too much methane when he farts.

by Anonymousreply 18January 18, 2023 3:09 AM

[quote]But you wouldn't give a big outdoor BBQ in winter.

Tell me you're not from Texas without telling me you're not from Texas.

by Anonymousreply 19January 18, 2023 3:10 AM

I loved the theme song.

I remember when I was in 5th grade band we were learning to play it.

We ran out of time at the end of the year to learn it all. I was bummed.

by Anonymousreply 20January 18, 2023 3:13 AM

Someone once said Miss Ellie always looked like she was struggling to hold in an explosive fart.

by Anonymousreply 21January 18, 2023 3:17 AM

R21 There was no struggle.

by Anonymousreply 22January 18, 2023 3:33 AM

I never watched Dallas as regularly as I did Dynasty and Knot’s Landing, but I did go through spells where I watched ..,but obviously not much toward the end, because I have NO idea who Kimberly Foster and Sheree Wilson are supposed to be.

I forgot that they brought Charlene Tilton back for a couple of seasons. I don’t remember what her story was. Also shocked that Donna was there that long. And WOW was Priscilla beautiful.

For some reason, I thought Linda Gray was there the whole time, but obviously not. Everyone can agree that Sue Ellen was the best character, right?

by Anonymousreply 23January 18, 2023 3:56 AM

WHET Cathy Podewell??

by Anonymousreply 24January 18, 2023 3:57 AM

[quote] WHET Cathy Podewell??

She went to Camp Podwall, and was never offered another role again.

by Anonymousreply 25January 18, 2023 3:58 AM

[quote] No opinion on the music, but Jim Davis was a big sexy beast. Neither of his sons had an ounce of his testosterone-fueled quiet swagger.

Jock had four sons: J. R., Bobby, and Gary with Miss Ellie, and Ray Krebbs with another woman.

by Anonymousreply 26January 18, 2023 4:11 AM

r23 Sue Ellen left Summer of 1989.The show ended two years later. I think that was a huge loss of the back of losing both Pam and Donna two years earlier.I always felt it a mistake they didnt axed Donna played by Susan Howard the same season Pam left.I think losing both was too much and Donna was rich with potential.

by Anonymousreply 27January 18, 2023 4:23 AM

Why didn’t they ever have Lucy on Knot’s Landing? I think I remember her showing up once the first season, but I barely remember them even mentioning her after that.

by Anonymousreply 28January 18, 2023 4:51 AM

That Falcon Crest theme is awful... I never watched that one. Dynasty was my jam... Hello Steven Carrington!

by Anonymousreply 29January 18, 2023 4:53 AM

Steven Carrington, of Studio 54. Great hair and what a face! That fascinating pout!

by Anonymousreply 30January 18, 2023 5:10 AM

r27 Should say a shame they DID ask Donna rather than didn't!!

by Anonymousreply 31January 18, 2023 5:16 AM

I never understood why Susan HOWARD was in the main credit sequence while other characters with far more screen time were relegated to the Southfork overlay at the end of the episode. Susan HOWARD was a complete nonentity on this show.

by Anonymousreply 32January 18, 2023 5:52 AM

r32 It took her a good few seasons before she was put into the main credits.Sometimes Miss Ellie only made a handful of appearances per episode but was still included in main credits ditto Sherre J Wilson in the final season when her character April Stevens died about 4 episodes in.

by Anonymousreply 33January 18, 2023 6:08 AM

[quote]Someone once said Miss Ellie always looked like she was struggling to hold in an explosive fart.

Lol, R21! And they were right.

Others with that selfsame look: Ned Beatty and Mare Winningham.

by Anonymousreply 34January 18, 2023 3:51 PM

Oh, you're right, R26! I'd forgotten about Gary. Let me revise my @R21: THREE of his four sons hadn't an ounce of Jock's easy sexual magnetism.

Ray Krebs, OTOH? Oh, yeah, he got ALL of what was clearly meant to be spread evenly among four.

by Anonymousreply 35January 18, 2023 3:57 PM

I wanted Ray inside me quite deeply.

by Anonymousreply 36January 18, 2023 4:02 PM

In retrospect, Steve Kanaly was a handsome man. Ray was a bit of a bowl of oatmeal though, sort of the Valene of Dallas when Valene was away... always sufferin'. Throw in a dash of Charlie Brown too, always on the short end of the stick.

The reason is money and contracts. Technically, the actors posted after the main title sequence were not relegated. They were rather not yet promoted. I think on average it took an actor two seasons to get added to the main credits. Either that or you were discarded altogether. The typical way to move up was starting as a guest star. They see potential, so next season you get an "Also Starring". After two more seasons, you are added to main title or out.

Some exceptions apply. I think at the end of Dallas' run, they added everybody and their brother to the main title sequence in lieu of money. Hey, we cannot pay you shit anymore, but at least you look important as an actor who carries the show."

by Anonymousreply 39January 18, 2023 4:36 PM

JR was like Victor Newman on Young & Restless. The only alpha personality amongst a bunch of good-looking men. Both JR and Victor don't even really have sex appeal.

I'm watching this from season one. In the past watched on and off. Sue Ellen really does stand out from the beginning. The scene where attempted rapists invade Southfork and make her dress up in her Ms. Texas bathing suit and sing people who need people is great acting but also hilarious. The show also has much more of a neo western feel than I remember.

by Anonymousreply 47September 20, 2023 5:51 AM

[quote] Surprised by all the Jock Ewing love.

It's nostalgia. Masculinity has disappeared from modern television.

by Anonymousreply 48September 20, 2023 6:53 AM

Back to the theme song:

"He's mean, he's rich, his wife is a bitch / He drives a big yellow car / He lives in a palace in the middle of Dallas / And we all know his name's JR."

by Anonymousreply 49September 20, 2023 8:35 AM

The theme from Dallas (and in the show in general) made Dallas seem so glamorous. When I actually went there as a kid, I was shocked to learn what a flat, brown, sprawling, congested shitpile of a city it actually was

by Anonymousreply 50September 20, 2023 10:08 AM

That Jock Ewing CoffeeMate commercial was linked to a website, bionicdisco.com - and that site is an Eldergays' dream! Nothing but the 1970s... in TV commercials and more. oh my.

by Anonymousreply 51September 20, 2023 10:57 AM

R35, I never watched Dallas save for the opening credits, and that was to catch a glimpse of Steve Kanaly in his cowboy hat.

Quarts of adolescent jizz shot over this silver fox.

Ditto for Gregory Harrison stepping out of the shower in Trapper John MD.

I think he was also meant to be the anti-JR; decent guy, salt of the earth, all that. But boring - everyone thought he was dull, while JR is mean, but also an absolute hoot.

I forgot how super-disco-flavored it was at first.

It's funny to hear the prominent cymbals disappear from the mix as the '80s get underway.

by Anonymousreply 57September 20, 2023 3:59 PM

Nobody cared about the Donna character, R27.

That woman did not even deserve an opening sequence credit. She should have been credited after the show with Morgan Brittany and all the rest.

by Anonymousreply 58September 20, 2023 4:54 PM

R15 No. I'm not fat. Because I am more of a country person and Dallas is too much of a city even though the show makes it out to be like some kind of cowboy ranch plantation or something, it's really not. R50 got it right.

I could see myself moseying along with my buds, clouds floating by and it's peaceful and quiet.

by Anonymousreply 59September 20, 2023 5:11 PM

God love you R56!

by Anonymousreply 60September 20, 2023 5:32 PM

r58 Awe I think she was more popular and interesting than you say! I especially liked her interactions with Miss Ellie.
