Has this been posted before? I'm not sure what audience it was intended for. The narrator tries to explain gay life like he's talking to a straight audience, but it features a bit of peen and arty eroticism. I laughed at the lesbian party with ominous music over their dancing. There's a second reel that you have to click on to watch. It features a Halloween drag show, the highlight is Charles Pierce as Yma Sumac worshipping at the altar of Bette Davis.
Documentary about gay San Francisco in the 60s

Fascinating footage OP and not quite as depressing and sinister as the other documentaries of that era - some of the guys in the bars etc are quite hawt.

I'm surprised by all the nudity. I wonder where this was shown.

(footage of naked gays frolicking at Lands End Beach) "if the wind is not too high, you can build a small fire for roasting weiners."

Interesting - blonde gays were considered more desirable - that sure has changed, if DL is anything to go by

"The drag queens are here at Turk & Taylor. So frequent were the fights between the screaming queens in the 2 to 3am period, police, even in permissive San Francisco, had had enough and asked an all-night cafeteria to close at midnight."
Translation: Wigs be gettin' snatched at the diner.

I wish it had credits to show who the hot guy in the pic above is.

Some of the artistic choices are odd. Near the end, they're having discussions with a gay couple and a lesbian couple. I wanted to hear more of their stories. But then the filmmaker cuts to shadowy figures having sex. So weird.

These shots of what the fellas call “baskets” show that the sun’s not the only thing they’re interested in.
Sounds like Richard Deacon (Fred Rutherford) narrating.

Good stuff. The film is copyrighted as 1970 at the end, and the description says it was shot between 1965-1970. I also wish they had spent more time interviewing the people featured about their lives.. The soft core arty scenes and the drag show scenes went on way too long.
That little gay dance party in the apartment looked fun….rocking to ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’. At the lesbian party with the ominous music overlay, they kept focusing on the scary woman with the cat juxtaposed to the topless girl dancing. Honestly, I’m surprised all these people allowed themselves to be filmed like this given the era. Even in permissive SF, you could still lose your job.
I wonder if any of these people featured are still with us today.
