White supremacy and a subsection of it that is fine with violence and supports its own fake news has been part of the problem. Is China becoming more authoritarian? Yes, and so is everywhere else - studies have shown that extreme wealth disparities tend to historically lead to more totalitarian governments. That’s across the board of political issues- environmentalists in China say China was more open to reform before 2008. Also, they used to have an exception to the one child policy to allow Uighurs to have more children due to cultural differences, and that too has only changed in a relatively short time.
You could argue that Reaganomics and its long term impact on holding down the minimum wage is what led to the savings and loan collapse of 2008 - because housing is a basic need that persists regardless of people’s actual inability to afford it, naturally leading to loans that can’t be repaid, the lower wages are relative to the cost of living.
I’ve seen Republican fake news which takes the medical essays in the public domain from a handful of fringe Chinese military doctors in the SARS era, who wrote that they thought SARS was man made as a weapon, to argue that China as an adversary was trying to make bio weapons. Ignoring the fact that the first SARS had health and economic impacts that were limited to China itself.
They will ignore anything and everything they want; the fact that other countries follow amoral policies too just gives fuel to their fire.
And they don’t support policies that would help a lot of people live normal life spans - like access to food and basic health care. Instead they want to study how to change the nature of the human body itself to hold off the aging process. They want to do this despite being aware of overpopulation issues. The U.S. and Europe were the first to publish gain of function research studies. They also created a database of furin cleavage sites, essentially a kind of big nuclear button that is relatively easy to push if someone wanted to. And they are well aware that China has a comparatively poor health system. They wouldn’t have to do anything directly, just wait for China to react paranoidly out of fear of a second SARS and inadvertently create one. And they probably are aware that the more vitriolic and oppositional their speech toward China is, the more they push them in that direction. Destabilizing China equals more power for the West, the riches of colonialism. They could have pushed things in a more democratic way simply by not allowing the very wealthy to become wealthier and the poor to get poorer.
It’s the poorest areas on earth, where people live close together and can’t afford to take time off work, that are hit hard by COVID.
“The FBI warned of “white supremacist infiltration of law enforcement” by organized groups and individuals in a 2006 intelligence assessment. Its 2015 policy statement on counterterrorism pointed out that domestic terrorism investigations of white supremacists “often have identified active links to law enforcement officers,” according to a 2020 report by the Brennan Center for Justice.
Notably, Metropolitan Police Department officers in Washington, D.C., have also been documented using apparent gang signs and symbols that associate their units with violence and white supremacist groups, the Washington Post reported in August 2017.“
