When Vampira sued Elvira, did she have a point?

Maila Nurmi once sued Cassandra Peterson, claiming that her "Elvira" persona was modeled after what she created as Vampira.

"[on Cassandra Peterson, aka "Elvira"] Boy, has the Devil got that bitch - it's the Devil in her blood. Initially, they wanted me. I wouldn't do it [the 1981 revival of her "Vampira" character] because I didn't want Vampira to be anything but perfect. I certainly didn't want her to be portrayed as a slut."

The history--

$10 Million Suit Claims Horror Mistress Elvira a Vampira Rip-Off September 12, 1988

Horror movie hostess Elvira, queen of the macabre on late night TV, is accused in a $10 million lawsuit of pirating her campy pin-up character from another sultry horror mistress.

″The character was ripped off,″ attorney Jan Goodman said Monday.

Ms. Goodman filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court last week on behalf of Maila ″Vampira″ Nurmi, who contends actress Cassandra ″Elvira″ Peterson infringed upon her trademark, public reputation and ability to market her lucrative character.

″Hopefully, my client will be fairly compensated and Cassandra Peterson will continue with her character and share the proceeds with my client,″ Ms. Goodman said.

Miss Nurmi created the Vampira character in the 1950s, combining sex appeal, humor and death as TV fright movie hostess, the lawsuit said. In 1981, executives at KHJ-TV asked her to revive ″The Vampira Show.″

Instead, the lawsuit contends, Miss Nurmi was eased out after turning over details pertaining to the image and persona of her character, and Miss Peterson was installed as host of the syndicated ″The Elvira Show.″

″There is no Elvira. There’s only a pirated Vampira,″ said Miss Nurmi, 65. ″Cassandra Peterson slavishly copied my product and made a fortune. America has been duped.″

I'm not sure. Cassandra has made a lot of money selling the E character/image to video games, etc. Vampira seems like the first model, but then Vampira was really modeled after Morticia Adams?

Maila should have sued Annie Lennox as well...

She didn’t have a point. She ripped off Charles Addams. Cassandra’s shtick was different from Vampira’s.

Nurmi sent nude photos of Cassandra to all of her sponsors. Many dropped Cassandra. Nurmi had a screw loose and died penniless and alone.

Nurmi wanted to create a new Vampira with a black woman no one heard of.

Nurmi lied about her entire life even claiming not to have been born in America. She thought it made her sound exotic.

And BTW, the network that Cassandra was working for paid her peanuts at the height of her fame. They were indicted funneling money to the Nixon campaign. Cassandra asked for the rights to do stuff like creating a fan club, rights to make merchandise, etc, every time her contract was up. By the end she owned all the rights to the character and the network freaked. She and her husband were very shrewd.

I understand why Maila was upset. Her show was groundbreaking but very controversial and it didn't last very long and ended up mostly forgetten except for it's cult following. Maila was influenced by Morticia Addams from the New Yorker cartoons but added her own personality to it. Since Morticia in the cartoons was mostly silent with a deadpan face.

While Cassandra took heavy influence from both Vampira and Morticia (Carolyn Jones) and added a more bubbly 80s California girl personality. I think Cassandra made Elvira into a distinctive character and gave her unique makeup and hairstyle and personality. I don't think Maila had much of a case because while derivative, it wasn't a carbon copy.

I understand why Maila was mad because she didn't get enough credit and she suffered a lot of backlash from conservatives and misogynists for portraying a strong, independent and intelligent woman who embraced darkness and sexually. Tim Burton's Ed Wood brought her more attention and James Dean as she part of his posse (and blamed by some at the time for his death) and did an interview talking about him. Cassandra was able to profit off of Elvira in ways that Maila wasn't able to or really could have with Vampira in the 1950s

If you read Cassandra’s book or look at her coffin table book, Elvira wasn’t originally designed to look like a Morticia or Vampira. The network demanded it.

Elvira's best friend was John Paragon (Jambi the genie) and she credits him for the idea of the updated Ronettes-style hairdo.

You can’t copyright a pair of implants in a push-up bra.

by Anonymousreply 10January 14, 2023 1:40 AM

Cassandra doesn’t have implants.

I always assumed that Elvira modeled her look as if a drag queen were doing it, rather than a serious vampire queen look.

by Anonymousreply 13January 14, 2023 3:05 AM

Vampira was a rip-off of Morticia. Maila Nurmi was pitching a tv version of The Addams Family. They didn’t want that, just her, so she kept the look and her husband gave her the name Vampira.

Maila sent all the businesses Cassandra was involved with nude photos of her to get them to drop her. Cassandra still pays respect to her even thought Maila worked overtime to destroy her.
