Those of us who grew up with LMP all know that she really did give off “bad vibes” (both of them actually) like she was always angry, plus she was never happy (except ironically, during her marriage to MJ!!), she picked unbelievably weird men, she was a massive druggie, and she was raised by servants. And yes, everything about her mother and father was also all of the above, just soooo weird and wrong that PP’s parents basically sold her to Elvis as a minor child. And the music industry tried to whitewash it and normalize Elvis. No, there is absolutely nothing normal about any of them. And we haven’t even scratched the surface on Xenu and the clam$.

Some people just have a dark cloud that follows them, that was LMP. She obviously suffered a great deal, never had proper parental role models, and she struggled in marriage, as a parent, an addict, and I am sure she was racked with guilt over her son’s suicide. I also think she had a personality disorder and mental illness that she struggled with, including dissociation. Her fourth divorce sounds like it was still ongoing and it was a doozie — she accused him of molesting the twins, he countered that she sexually abused them herself, he brought evidence of her prolific drug use and it was impressive.

I’m just hoping she didn’t go out in any pain, and that the people who are left behind can find meaning in her life. Hopefully there was still enough good there that they can focus on the positive times they shared. Whatever one thought of her, I did respect the fact that she didn’t run around begging people to like her. She was never thirsty — you either like her or you don’t. I respect that she never tried to make you like her, she was just herself.

I have been baffled by the overwhelming Lisa Marie Presley grief. She was a musician, but she had only one minor hit that only got to no. 16 on the Billboard charts.

My question is how they were able to so quickly determine her permanent vegetative state. To my knowledge, that is not something doctors can determine 15 minutes after a patient arrives at hospital. It's a much longer process, involving several tests and procedures, and backup opinions of other MDs. For a famous person like LMP - who was a relatively young woman with young children - they'd want to be extra-sure of her status.

And she was at West Hills, out on the edge of the Valley. To my knowledge, that's a local, community hospital, and not a Level One Trauma or research medical center. Why would the Presleys let a serious life-ending decision be made so quickly there? Note I'm not saying it's a bad hospital, I'm sure people get good care there. I know it was the closest to LMP so she that's where she ended up. Were doctors there familiar with her, and her issues, so the family felt comfortable making a quick DNR decision?

Lisa Marie's death affected me more than I think any other celebrity death. I had hoped she would come to terms with her sexuality and have a loving relationship with another woman since it appears denying who she was may have been part of her unhappiness. Lisa was attractive and I liked her fashion sense (somewhat conservative), but both Elvis and Priscilla had striking good looks. Priscilla looks somewhat OK now, but for a while she was heading into Cat Lady territory.

I've enjoyed going to Memphis for weekend trips since I was a child, raised by 2 generations of Elvis fans. Beale Street is a good time, there's so much history and atmosphere in that particular part of Memphis. Graceland is a must for a visit, but it has turned into an amusement park vibe. My fondest memories are pre-museum where it was just Graceland, a few of the cars across the street and a tour of the Lisa Marie. No frills.

I have family ties to Memphis r540, and have also been there several times over the past decades. My great grandmother was visiting Memphis, near Graceland, when the news hit in August 1977 that he had died; she was one of the hundreds of people milling around outside the gates that afternoon/evening.

The house and grounds have become very touristy, but I guess that would be inevitable. Memphis hugely benefits from the tourist money, the hotels and restaurants nearby employ hundreds and reap needed dollars. I would assume that should the family ever want to sell the property, the city would take it over, possibly designate it a National Historic or Cultural site (or whatever they call similar places).

I went to Memphis a couple of years ago. I must have gone at a bad time because I thought Beale Street was overrated. The new generation of Kennedys don't seem to have much political ambitions probably because of the cost and toll it took on their elders. Years of scandal, assassinations, paparazzi chases and living under a glaring spotlight did not make the senior Kennedys happy or healthy. Why bother with all that, when you can do public service work in the private sector? As many of the younger Kennedys do.

Most of the younger Kennedys are very highly educated, from what I can tell. They aren't sitting around in Dubai or Ibiza partying and pretending to be DJs. Most of them have held positions or had good jobs.

Am I right in thinking that the expectation for a young Kennedy type is that they have to get an education. education and having a prestigious job or some sort is a requirement and the parents put pressure on them to achieve this.

The Presleys (and other showbiz families) don't seem to put any focus on education or jobs. They send their kids to those crazy expensive private schools but then most of them filter into modelling, acting, starting a band. Parents buy them a 2-3 million house in LA or NY and many of them just knock about into their 40s with no success, a few rehab stints, an Instagram full of 'doing nothing in pretty places' and once in a blue moon they do an indie film or work with their parents or write a book about their parents. Do the parent's raise them with no understanding of the world and the career options that exist outside of the industry? I *almost* feel bad for them because surely the private schools keep them in a bubble too. It's like the opposite of being raised in public housing (my life) and having no idea that you can actually go and become a teacher or an accountant and get away from welfare and retail jobs.

It seems that for a certain segment of the wealthy elite, higher education credentials function as a value in and of itself, a status signifier.

For decades, the non-wealthy lower crust used higher education credentials as a tool of upward financial and social mobility.

That worked for those who could benefit from a family and racial support system where it was expected that a college degree was on the agenda, because, in fact, back then, advanced education credentials did result in increased salaries and upward social mobility.

Now, in this new world, I'm not sure how any of that works.

Elvis was born dirt-poor white. Priscilla must've had some exposure to knowing the value of higher education because her Dad was an Officer in the Air Force.

It's in total keeping with how the Presleys did things at Graceland r560. Remember, it's a world famous home (third most visited in the US) and basically a museum at this point. LMP is already privately buried, so this is just the public celebration. The family gravesite has always been open to the public, there will be many who'll want to see LM's resting spot.

I think one value of higher education is it can help give a feeling of accomplishment, which many children of famous parents could use.
