Everyone's Favorite Half-Black, Jew-ish Tubby Lying Queen: Part 3 of the George Santos Thread

Continue discussing Santos's lies and grifts

by Anonymousreply 600January 26, 2023 4:11 PM

Now the Nassau County GOP is calling on him to resign

by Anonymousreply 1January 11, 2023 7:37 PM

McCarthy got what he wanted last weekend - his vote. What more does he need this POS for ? Time to get rid of him.

by Anonymousreply 2January 11, 2023 7:42 PM

Anthony D’Esposito must be thrilled (and I don’t mean this sarcastically) that all of the constituent inquiries and requests for both districts (outside of Queens) will be going to him.

by Anonymousreply 3January 11, 2023 7:45 PM

Georgie's toast. What new challenge will his spokestwink/handler move on to now?

by Anonymousreply 4January 11, 2023 7:57 PM

Deep, deep shame on NY’s 3rd District. They wanted a miserable prick and they got a miserable pathological liar criminal prick.

by Anonymousreply 5January 11, 2023 8:04 PM

I really appreciate and was impressed by how the top Nassau GOP head guy took responsibility and accountability for this Santos mess.

by Anonymousreply 7January 11, 2023 8:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 10January 11, 2023 11:16 PM

The GOP in that district is desperately trying to save face. That district was mostly always a blue one, and the fact that it went red this time was a gift that essentially just got taken away from the Repubs in that district by Santos. The GOP won't get a Repub elected in that district for quite a long time.

by Anonymousreply 11January 11, 2023 11:17 PM

[quote]The GOP in that district is desperately trying to save face.

Exactly. Santos (as one pundit stated) could cause the Republicans to lose this seat FOREVER!!!

After such a blistering from the Nassau GOP George Santos still said that he will not resign. Now, if Democrats can't work this then they are useless.

I am not by any means a conspiracy theorist, but the more I read of this situation the more I am wondering about something far deeper going on. What I mean by that is how could one man possibly make up so many different aspects of his life in such a short time? Now, throwing in all the aspects of financing his campaign now coming to light, and you have to wonder how this happened. Serial liars exist of course but in a space of two years, he fabricated, apparently, every waking moment of his life.

I don't think it's odd at all, R43. People are blinded by their own agendas and therefore "see what they want to see." Santos isn't the 1st to do this and get away with it. Think of Jeffrey Epstein and there are so many more. The GOP head admitted that they (he) did not properly vet Santos (nor planned to) because Santos was winning.

by Anonymousreply 45January 12, 2023 12:11 PM

R44 Interesting, and another confirmation that the mysterious money stuff holds the really embarrassing crime.

If and when enough people on both political sides realize how poisonous this guy is for them, it will be the financial stuff they’ll use to do him in and get rid of him. Not the lying about his past stuff.

by Anonymousreply 46January 12, 2023 12:19 PM

It seemed like the Nassau county GOP peeps were saying that they hadn’t vetted him because he had no chance of winning in 2020 and with the original map in 2022 and no one else wanted to run. Then mid-2022 campaign the map changed.

He is only motivated by getting what he feels like he is entitled to have and he doesn’t care how this affects others, in short he is the perfect example of a magat republican.

I also think he's a sociopath. He reminds me a bit of Tania Head, the 9/11 faker. He also reminds me of Sarah Delashmit, a woman who pretended to have cancer, muscular dystrophy, miscarriages, and other illnesses and preyed on the kindness of various people and non-profits that aid disabled people. I first found out about that case last spring when the podcast Sympathy Pains was released. It was really good podcast and listened to it over a couple of days. Elle also did a good article on her. Delashmit, Santos, and Head are all scumbags who took advantage of well meaning people. Delashmit ended up in prison for fraud. I hope Georgie boy is charged with something either here in the US or in Brazil.

This OT, most of the people listed as upcoming guest hosts will probably stink to high heaven. Franken and Hasan Minhaj will probably be the only decent guest hosts. Leslie Jones is a whiny cry baby bitch and I can't stand how the media puts up with her antics with her bitching about various companies and making fun of a food service worker's accent. She will probably give crappy takes on politics. During the pandemic, any time a politician gained popularity or media attention for either standing up to Trump. Jones would kiss up to them on twitter even though she probably never knew who the fuck they were before the media gave them attention. Comedy Central will probably regret involving her as a guest host. I do wonder if Al could end up with a TV show and make some kind of comeback.

by Anonymousreply 144January 15, 2023 1:15 AM

R143, it’s his congressional pin. Every congressperson has them to identify them for access purposes.

Didn’t you notice them on every single congressperson?

by Anonymousreply 145January 15, 2023 1:24 AM

Thanks R145. I'm not an American but I will notice the pins now after that explanation. Is that batshit crazy whore Marge wearing hers on a chain?

Looks like it, yes.

Most of them wear them on their lapels for easier viewing, but of course when you’re dealing with a fucking moron like MTG….

by Anonymousreply 147January 15, 2023 1:45 AM

In fact, r146, on 1/6 the congresspeople were told for safety to remove their pins.

by Anonymousreply 148January 15, 2023 1:46 AM

Some congresswomen have been wearing the pins as necklaces for several years now. It's not only MTG.

by Anonymousreply 156January 15, 2023 4:08 AM

There's really only one way to be forced out: a two-thirds vote of the House to expel him. That probably won't happen.

But in the meantime, it is a hell of a lot of fodder to constantly mention Santos/Devalder and all his bullshit and nonsense for the next two years. Honestly, I don't think we really want him out.

I must admit that I am curious to see what will be next. Let's assume he resigns or is expelled from Congress. Then what? I believe that he would try for a book deal, but no publisher will touch him. There will be talks about a movie but that will go nowhere. So, what would a still relatively young man do? How will he support himself?

by Anonymousreply 159January 15, 2023 10:44 AM

[quote]Let's assume he resigns or is expelled from Congress.

Neither thing will happen R159. 2/3 of Congress have to vote together to have him expelled and the GOP don't care as long as they have a Republican number for voting. And even believing he would resign? What's wrong with you? A person like that hangs in to the bitter, bitter end. We've got him for the next 2 years. Assuming he isn't re-elected (never say never!) he won't be able to work in any reputable professional capacity again. My prediction is that he will become a real estate agent or a corporate recruiter. He is perfect for those professions. Ticks all the boxes. He's far too fat for OF. There will be no book deal or movie. At the moment he is the gift that keeps giving us mirth - but soon he will become persona non grata. As soon as his term is over the GOP will stare straight through him.

[quote] What does he mean by HHS? That he got Medicaid to pay for two knee replacements—after wrecking his knees playing college volleyball? Does he think we're idiots?

He probably heard stories of former athletes getting knee or other joint replacements and figured that could make the volleyball story seem more dramatic. The knee replacement story would have likely been seen as bullshit if he had spouted that in front of people who work in orthopedic health care.

by Anonymousreply 175January 15, 2023 7:03 PM

Why are all of you being so hard on George? He is who he is. What is being glossed over (IMHO) is that there were more than a few Republicans that knew about Santos but kept quiet. Shouldn't they be the ones raked over the coals?

by Anonymousreply 176January 15, 2023 7:53 PM

They should all be raked over the coals. Why is he not responsible? He also should be held accountable for his fraud and con-artistry.

by Anonymousreply 177January 15, 2023 7:54 PM

[quote]Why is he not responsible?

No one said that he shouldn't be responsible. But as R178 posted, Santos is a thief and a con artist. We knew that by the 30th posting on this thread. Therefore, why continually rehash that? Let the law do its job. But shouldn't the Republicans not be responsible and hold accountability too? No matter how good he may think that he is George Santos could not have done this all by himself.

by Anonymousreply 180January 15, 2023 8:15 PM

I suspect the NY AG, homeland security or the Brazilian government could settle this matter with little fuss.

(campaign finance violations, green card fraud and the Brazilian criminal charges respectively)

by Anonymousreply 181January 15, 2023 8:17 PM

He did lie. And continues to scam by propping up the lies. He's in congress and he should be working on something at least part of the time. But what could he work on? He doesn't have a finance background, so any finance opinion he might have is lacking and unqualified. He never went to college, he worked briefly at a call center, and for a pyramid scheme, and that's really it besides conning people. Anytime he responds to anything, he needs to be remined of his extremely limited knowledge on anything except duping people andstealing from them.

by Anonymousreply 182January 15, 2023 8:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 201January 16, 2023 12:35 AM

Me too, r199, since that chairman doesn’t have the power nor authority to expel him. Either way you slice it, we’ll need 2/3 vote to expel him.

But here’s the thing, there’s only 76 R reps we need with our 212. Already 6 on Long Island have demanded he resign. So 70 of 220+ repigs shouldn’t be THAT difficult.

It’ll be hard, but it shouldn’t be that hard. And even if the resolution doesn’t pass, the vote may be close enough to get him out. Don’t forget, Nixon didn’t resign until all the votes he counted meant he would’ve been impeached.

by Anonymousreply 202January 16, 2023 12:58 AM

I'm amazed you think that isn't too difficult. Republicans band together and unless McCarthy whips them to, I doubt you can get close to that. And with such a small majority, McCarthy is not going to want to lose a loyal voter.

by Anonymousreply 204January 16, 2023 2:39 AM

McCarthy isn’t the powerhouse Pelosi was. He’s got rogues and people that are not behind him, but not necessarily against him either.

The asswipe who’s the subject of this thread will not have that support. As has been said, 6 New York republicans (his home damn state) have called for his ouster. I can’t imagine it would be that difficult to get 70 more of the 200 or so.

by Anonymousreply 228January 16, 2023 8:38 PM

Some media outlet is probably trying to track down Santo's former "wife" and possible law enforcement is on the trail too.

I also wonder like R224 if it was some kind of green card marriage and the woman in turn was giving him some kind of financial support. Another possibility is a beard marriage with some lesbian who had to appear straight for family or professional reasons and she had deal with Georgie.

I hope some kind of legislation gets passed that would require people wanting to run for political office to be thoroughly vetted with requirements that give documentation of undergrad or grad degrees and reference letters from at least two people from each past employer.

by Anonymousreply 229January 16, 2023 8:39 PM

He may think he's not going anywhere, R228, but the those running the federal and state investigations into all kinds of financial fraud and campaign violations might have other plans for him. Oh, and add Brazil requesting his extradition.

by Anonymousreply 230January 16, 2023 8:43 PM

Don't we know that the former wife lives in New Jersey? She was photographed with a 2-year-old daughter at the Macy's parade in 2020—the photo was widely reproduced in British Isles papers in articles on the US covid Thanksgiving and was the first thing that popped up when I googled her name when the news broke. Uadla Santos—now, of course, it's probably farther down on the list of google results.

by Anonymousreply 231January 16, 2023 8:43 PM

And in a beautiful dig, it’s called the SANTOS Act:

This guy who is a Newsweek editor said he asked Santos about the daughter that Uadla gave birth to in 2018 and that he hasn't responded. This Newsweek editor said that Uadla's citizenship status is unknown and also it's unknown if Santos was sponsering her for a green card or citizenship.

by Anonymousreply 242January 16, 2023 10:40 PM

[quote] [R234], glad someone is looking into this. He didn't even live with his wife, I doubt that kid is his.

I also doubt he's the father. I wonder where Ualda gave birth. In some US states if a married woman has baby her husband is presumed to be the father. Depending on state laws, if a married woman has a baby fathered by someone other than her husband, she and/or the bio father would have to file paperwork or do other legal action to get the bio father acknowledged on the birth certificate and other records.

In this case, who the fuck knows if Ualda was even in the US when she had the kid? I do think more shit will come out on the wife especially if this turns out to be green card fraud as many people are suspecting.

What this whole Trump period, MAGA, or whatever you want to call it, has made me realize is how much our country (USA) is so heavily dependent upon people simply doing the right thing. Subpoenas are issued but if one simply ignores them... oh, well. Jail sentences are issued but the person gets out in a few days (Steve Bannon). I'm not a history buff but I can't recall ever a time in USA history where if you don't want to honor our institutions then so be it. You're good. Yes, there have been (and are) many, many, horrible/horrific incidents in this country but to this level? I mean... yep, there was William Leidesdorff (Black Mexican American) who basically owned all of Sacramento (or was most of California? Anyway...) and that land was literally stolen from his family, and they had no recourse. That was because California passed a law that no negro or asian person could testify against a white person. Even Duncan Hunter who was charged with campaign finance violations, and only finally pleaded guilty, remained in Congress and continued to collect a salary for more than a month before resigning. He was warned not to cast any votes but never expelled.

The likelihood of Santos being charged, convicted through the trial process, and then sentenced within the span of his 2-year term is sort of slim.

One happy note, he'd need to serve for 5 years before being eligible for any retirement benefits.

by Anonymousreply 269January 17, 2023 11:34 PM

Think of it this way: for the entirety he serves, he will be a National focal point, a living billboard for the standards of the Republican Party. Lies, fraud, grossly unqualified, morally bankrupt.

And don’t think even a lot of Republican voters believe he’s an anomaly.

So they may pay a big price for that one seat.

Lord knows I don't want to be fair with this psychotic bitch, but to be fair, Brazilian names are complicated. More often than not you wind up with at least 4 names at birth, which many people use in different combinations.

Then of course there's using your multiple surnames to create aliases to defraud people.

by Anonymousreply 297January 18, 2023 2:59 AM

United States House Committee on Small Business

The United States House Committee on Small Business is a standing committee of the United States House of Representatives. It was established in 1941 as the House Select Committee on Small Business.

History

On December 4, 1941, the U. S. House of Representatives created the first House Select Committee on Small Business in response to a growing number of small business activists and organizations advocating for more protections and better government policies for America's small businesses. While it had no legislative authority, the select committee became popular with House members and was reauthorized every following Congress until January 5, 1975, when it was made a permanent standing committee. House members then granted the new standing committee with certain areas of legislative jurisdiction and oversight functions, increasing its scope and influence.

Specifically, the House Small Business Committee is charged with assessing and investigating the problems of small businesses and examining the impact of general business practices and trends on small businesses. The committee has oversight and legislative authority over the Small Business Administration (SBA) and its programs, as well as provides assistance to and protection of small businesses, including financial aid and the participation of small business enterprises in federal procurement and government contracts.

Jurisdiction

The Small Business Committee has oversight and legislative jurisdiction over the Small Business Administration and its programs, as well as provides assistance to and protection of small business, including financial aid and the participation of small business enterprises in federal procurement and government contracts. The committee also oversees matters related to the Regulatory Flexibility Act and the Paperwork Reduction Act. The jurisdiction extends to other programs and initiatives addressing small business outside of the confines of these two specific acts.

FYI

United States House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology

The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology is a committee of the United States House of Representatives. It has jurisdiction over non-defense federal scientific research and development. More specifically, the committee has complete jurisdiction over the following federal agencies: NASA, NSF, NIST, and the OSTP. The committee also has authority over R&D activities at the Department of Energy, the EPA, FAA, NOAA, the DOT, the NWS, the DHS and the U.S. Fire Administration.

History In the wake of the Soviet Sputnik program in the late 1950s, Congress created the Select Committee on Astronautics and Space Exploration in 1958, chaired by majority leader John William McCormack. This select committee drafted the National Aeronautics and Space Act that created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A staff report of the committee, the Space Handbook: Astronautics and its Applications, provided non-technical information about spaceflight to U.S. policy makers.[2]

The committee also chartered the permanent House Committee on Science and Astronautics, which officially began on January 3, 1959, and was the first new standing committee established in the House since 1946. The name was changed in 1974 to the House Committee on Science and Technology. The name was changed again in 1987 to the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. After the Republican Party gained a majority in Congress in 1994, the name of the committee was changed to the House Committee on Science. With the return of control to the Democrats in 2007, the committee's name was changed back to the House Committee on Science and Technology.

In the 112th Congress, Committee Chairman Ralph Hall added "Space" back into the committee's name: "The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology" – a nod to the committee's history, broad jurisdiction, and the importance of space exploration in maintaining American innovation and competitiveness.

R360, the texts are quoted in all the news stories about the veteran's dog and George's fraud.

by Anonymousreply 362January 19, 2023 4:06 PM

Something annoying I noticed on MSNBC's José Díaz-Balart, which was on in my living room with the volume muted: a lede or banner at the bottom of the screen said 'Santos refutes claims of stealing money from ailing dog.' I took issue with this.

While George Santos may have 𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑖𝑒𝑑 or 𝑔𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑑 the claims, he has never 𝑟𝑒𝑓𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑑 anything. 𝑅𝑒𝑓𝑢𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 involves more than simple denial. It would require evidence.

The bar for whoever is allowed to set copy on ledes must be pretty low.

R370 Does the fat cunt not know that CAMERAS exist?

This is firm proof that the asshole is not just a pathological liar, but a narcissist as well. To someone like this, "reality" is whatever he says it is in the moment. Sky looks purple today? Then the sky IS purple, not blue! He says he was a college grad who never swindled anyone or did drag? Then that's what actually happened, no question!

Donald Trump is wired the same way. It's a deeply poisonous way to live.

Does that matter? Trump still says that the election was stolen even given the overwhelming amount of evidence that it wasn't. But nearly half the voting electorate believes him and continues to donate to him. So, does it matter if there were cameras showing George Santos in drag? He said it was false.

by Anonymousreply 374January 19, 2023 8:33 PM

This happened in 2008. There must be video and cell phone pix of his signature turns and bobs. His constituents demand to see why he didn't win!

listen to the first minutes of this report. This is why the Republican "outrage" is nothing but shit. Santos was "spotted" at a Temple this past weekend. So, who's the Jew? Who is the guy working in Santo's Long Island office? Who initiated and authorized that constituent calls be forwarded to another Congress person?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 382January 19, 2023 10:57 PM

My understanding is that the Nassau County GOP and Anthony D’Esposito (my rep fwiw.) decided together that the NY-03 (North Shore) constituent calls should go to D’Esposito (South Shore.) I have an acquaintance who is involved in the protests and is a NY-03 resident and she has a pre-existing relationship with D’Esposito due to historic preservation initiatives they worked on together after Sandy and she spoke to him the day before the press conference.

by Anonymousreply 383January 19, 2023 11:06 PM

Can you just do that r383? I mean, it sounds like a good idea overall, but can you just hijack all the calls like that?

by Anonymousreply 384January 19, 2023 11:10 PM

I don’t believe that residents of NY-03 are complaining. I think the Long Island GOP understands just how angry the Constituents are and also know that Santos wouldn’t actually do anything for anyone.

Fat girl is Naysa Woomer

The new communications director for George Santos previously worked for Charlie Baker’s administration

Naysa Woomer previously worked for the Massachusetts Dept. of Revenue and the Massachusetts Republican Party.

By Susannah Sudborough

January 10, 2023 Facebook Twitter Email Email 7 New York Congressional Rep. George Santos, who infamously lied about major parts of his background and committed alleged campaign finance law violations, has a new communications director with ties to former Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker and his administration.

According to Legistorm, a nonpartisan research firm, Naysa Woomer began as Santos’s communications director this month. Before that, she worked as a communications specialist for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue for nearly four years.

Prior to working for the state, Woomer was the communications director for the Massachusetts Republican Party for almost a year, from April 2018 to Feb. 2019.

Notably, she left about a month after the current chair of the party, Jim Lyons, who is known for chastising former Gov. Charlie Baker for not supporting former President Donald Trump, became chair.

Woomer hails from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and earned a B.A. in political science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, according to Legistorm. She participated in many Republican extracurricular activities during her time there, and even interned for former Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum in 2006.

After graduating college in 2008, Woomer seemingly took a break from politics for a few years, before beginning work for several different republican congressional representatives over the next few years in 2014.

Woomer was not immediately available for comment on this article.

by Anonymousreply 441January 20, 2023 11:28 PM

So where is the love child?

by Anonymousreply 442January 20, 2023 11:30 PM

The love child may or may not be his ex-wife's daughter Beatriz, who was born in 2018 while they were still legally married—which would make her a legitimate child, not a love child. Then again the jury is out on whether that marriage was a sham contracted for green card purposes.

Well, who among us can say we don’t?

by Anonymousreply 447January 21, 2023 1:28 AM

I struggle to get the psychology of someone like this. How did he imagine this was going to play out? He told so many lies he can't keep the details straight. He lied about things easy to disprove. Worst of all, he lied himself into a place where the levels of scrutiny on him intensify massively and media organisations have major resources. Surely he must have known he was going to be caught? Did he really think he could make it all the way through his term?

Reminds me a little of Anna Sorokin, who pretended to be a German heiress and conned wealthy New York society out of millions. But at least she had an amazing time living in fancy hotels as a fashionable socialite on the party circuit before it all came crashing down. Did Santos actually enjoy or get anything out of his lies except a few days as a junior congressman before becoming a national joke? Is this a case of 'any attention is good'?

by Anonymousreply 448January 21, 2023 1:46 AM

If you look at his campaign expenses he was living it high for a while - expensive dinners, hotel rooms and so on. Plus he gets to have a $174,000 p/a job for a couple of years. I think these people are thinking short-term in general.

by Anonymousreply 449January 21, 2023 1:50 AM

R449 I doubt he will though, eventually the House will vote to expel him, it is beyond embarrassing already and they can't possibly want two full years of this. Whatever this is, it seems compulsive.

by Anonymousreply 452January 21, 2023 2:05 AM

R451 House Republicans won't censure the Freedom Caucus for their ongoing idiocies because they please a segment of the base as they own the libs. But what is coming out about Santos is not going to please the base - no-one likes a scam artist, so they won't get pushback for getting rid of him. Even though they surely lose the election to replace him, I suspect that they will shortly be making the calculation that it's better to hack off the diseased finger now.

by Anonymousreply 453January 21, 2023 2:12 AM

R453, what pleases the Republican base is "owning the libs," and as long as "the libs" are against Santos, Santos stays. At least until he becomes a liability for some other reason, e.g. fundraising.

[quote] no-one likes a scam artist

The Republican base is still supporting a flagrant scam artist for president. The psychology of the mark is certainly something to behold.

Santos’s citizenship is still up in the air. He’s claimed to have been born in Queens, but he’s also claimed that he was born in Brazil. I prefer to think that he’s Brazilian and that he therefore ripped off the woman with whom he entered into the green card marriage. That marriage he had to a woman is looking more fake by the day... Daily Beast:

"Two years into his mysterious marriage to a woman—and five years before they divorced—George Santos invited friends to celebrate his engagement to a man, The Daily Beast has learned.

“Good evening everyone! As you all may already know Pedro and I have decided to join our toothbrushes! Lol and a very few friends have been selected to share this special moment with us!” Santos wrote in a 2014 Facebook “engagement dinner” invitation.

The invitation was shared with The Daily Beast by Santos’ old roommate, Greg Morey-Parker, and the boyfriend, Pedro Vilarva, confirmed that the future congressman planned the celebration.

At the time, Santos—who ran for Congress in New York as an “openly gay” Republican—was already married to a Brazilian woman, according to public records. The New York City Marriage Index database shows the couple acquired a marriage license in December 2012, and as The Daily Beast reported last month, they divorced in 2019."

In the invitation, Santos asked guests to “join us on Sunday November 23 at 8:30 pm at La Bonne Soupe” in Manhattan. (Federal filings show that, seven years later, Santos’ campaign committee had spent a combined nearly $1,800 at the restaurant, a block away from Trump Tower.)

“I hope to see everyone [sic] of you there and be sharp and make it count 😉 I know there was no time for an written [sic] invitation but thanks to ‘Facebook’ everyone has a whole weeks [sic] notice! Lmao for all of you that know me I can suck on timing! Thanks for sharing this very important day in our lives! See you all there,” Santos wrote.

Vilarva, who has described his relationship with Santos in previous interviews, told The Daily Beast the engagement party “never happened” because he rejected Santos’ proposals.

“He asked me 3x but I didn’t accept it,” Vilarva wrote in a text. “There was never a party [or] anything in regards to it.”

R490 The Tub of Shit thinks he can be a cute little smartass to reporters, like Trump always was, and get away with it. He thinks the best defense is a good offense, because he's what my generation used to call "retarded."

But just like his greasy orange idol, he'll change his tune once he's under oath and staring down a federal indictment. No amount of wisecracks will deter the IRS, the FEC, the SEC, or the county/state prosecutors who are up his lumpy ass.

For those who don't know, as an example, in 2016 (someone less lazy can find more up to date figures) the average Members' Representational Allowance (MRA) was $1,268,520 and each Rep is allowed to use their MRA to employ up to 18 full-time, permanent employees. So that's quite a lot of money and employees to do a lot of the work for you.

The mystery of his campaign loans deepens

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 550January 25, 2023 3:30 PM

From that Times article:

"Brett G. Kappel, a leading elections lawyer who advises both Democrats and Republicans on campaign finance issues, said that it would be a 'very big deal' if Mr. Santos was admitting he did not personally finance the campaign loan.

“'If the candidate’s personal wealth wasn’t the source of the loan, then what was?' he asked. 'The only other permissible source would be a bank, and they would require collateral for a loan of this size. If a bank wasn’t the source of the funds, then the only alternatives are illegal sources'.”

WaPo details an alleged Ponzi scheme by Santos:

"As they dined on ravioli, shrimp and pasta, Santos told two potential investors he had experience working at Goldman Sachs, which the bank denies. Santos claimed to have a master’s degree and a license to sell securities, neither of which could be confirmed. (Santos has also said he attended Baruch College on a volleyball scholarship, though the college has disputed this, and after the 2022 election Santos acknowledged he did not graduate from any college.)

Santos outlined how the investments would pay out thousands of dollars per week, risk-free. “He was telling us the money would go toward this marketing campaign and he would use the money to flip it and return the money to you,” said Ruiz. “He said it would be a good way to save your money. Instead of spending it all you will get it in bits per week.”

Much more at the link, which is a free version of the WaPo article.

Serious question for those in the know:

I’ve heard of presidential appointees not being able to get certain levels of clearance needed for their positions (mostly in dumps era of giving his family jobs), but how does that work for congressmen? How could this guy possibly clear any hurdles needed for clearance with his background?

by Anonymousreply 564January 25, 2023 9:04 PM

I have to admit that Santos' ability to spin tale after tale with just enough details to make you think he's an insider is impressive

by Anonymousreply 565January 25, 2023 9:15 PM

I would agree with you in general conversation, but a quick phone call or two would reveal he’s a fraud, so I don’t give him as much credit as, say, Madoff, who pulled the wool over the SEC’s eyes as well.

by Anonymousreply 566January 25, 2023 9:21 PM

R564 Not all members of Congress need, or are given, a security clearance. Certain members (those on Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, Intelligence, and maybe Homeland Security or Financial Services) need a security clearance to have access to sensitive materials and briefings. If a person would not pass an FBI background check to receive such a clearance, then he or she simply wouldn't be allowed to serve on a committee where it might come up. Also, the congressional leadership (Speaker, House Minority Leader, and the two Senate party leaders) receive full security briefings on covert operations and military affairs, and often know as much about the CIA's black ops as the president does. Those positions also require security clearance, and again, if a person couldn't get them, then they wouldn't be allowed to assume that position or be anywhere near sensitive material.

by Anonymousreply 567January 25, 2023 9:27 PM

Thank you, r567. That makes a lot of sense and your knowledge is appreciated.
