I really never even knew the symptoms of depression, so I didn't know I was suffering from it. I thought my sobriety would cure my depression. It changed things up for a year or so, but even sober from all drugs and alcohol for years, I still have bouts of depression. It is frustrating, but remaining vigilant is key.

Willie Ames is still hottie. Wasn't he the first choice to star in 'Blue Lagoon' with Brooke Shileds in 1980 ? I had heard that - he couldn't get away from filming EIE so they went with someone who looked similar to him - Chris Atkins. I'd rather have seen Ames and his dick in the role.

I’m a year younger than him, and in my school, at lunch, in the late ‘70s, kids would “play” TV shows. The mean girls in my class always bullied me into playing Nicholas (I mean, I had the haircut). I adored him at the time!

I feel bad for these kids who were once child stars, mostly bankrolling the whole family, only to be cast aside as adults. That's nice that Dick Van Patten helped him out, though it's particularly sad when adults like Christina Applegate talk about how their adult co-stars were more like their parents than the actual parents.
Though when I saw this thread, I knew that America's Sweetheart Susan would find a away to make this be all about her!
by Anonymous | reply 114 | January 9, 2023 1:46 PM |
It’s amazing that kid stars like Mackenzie Phillips were able to pull through. In her case her drug addiction. Mac has said Bonnie Franklin was never a parental figure and and really just a co star. I think part of the reason it took Mackenzie so long to overcome her addiction was she had absolutely no one close to her. Dick Van Patten helped Adam out and I believe posted his bail when Adam was going through his drug phase. Nice that their relationship transcended the show.
by Anonymous | reply 115 | January 9, 2023 1:58 PM |
I didn't care for this show. I'm afraid it was not my favorite.

by Anonymous | reply 118 | January 9, 2023 3:06 PM |
R118- I agree. If datalounge had a bet who was going to kick the bucket next Susan Richardson would have been at the top of the list.
I think Mary Bradford/Lani O'Grady had some of the same issues as Adam Richman- sad for both. Lani was very likeable on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | January 9, 2023 3:09 PM |
Lani probably committed suicide too, so if turns out Adam did the same thing how absolutely tragic and awful this would be.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | January 9, 2023 3:18 PM |
That was nice that the father from EIE Dick Van Patten bailed out his tv son years ago. He was a nice person in real life. I remember something he said years ago-
You are only as successful as the show you're on
You can be on a hit show for years , lots of adulation from fans etc and then the show goes off the air because the writers feel they've done as much as they can for the characters. The actors fall into obscurity for the rest of their lives which is what happened to almost all of the actors . Betty Buckley is very talented and of course has a had a successful career in the theatre and a couple of movies. Willie Aames went on to appear in that CRAPPY show with the two bit actor Scott Baio ( Who would you rather do ca. 1982 Willie or Scott?- for me I would prefer Scott Baio.) Ralph Macchio appeared in the last season of the show and he went on to some success too with his Karate Kid movies but the rest of them just faded. Oh well.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 9, 2023 3:22 PM |

Joan Prather (who played David Bradford’s wife, and incidentally lured John Travolta into $cientilogy) should have had a bigger career. She’s so good in SMILE.
She may even be worthy of a “Why Did Joan Prathers’ Career Go Straight Down the Shitter?” thread - tho perhaps this one will suffice.

Willie Aames did have a decent run as an actor after the show. He was a regular on Charles in Charge ran for 5 seasons. He was also the lead in the films Paradise and Zapped which were studio films. They were panned by critics, however, and didn’t do great at the box office.

[quote]"Eight Is Enough" Star Busted in "Drag" Race
[quote] Joan Prather -- Janet McArthur Bradford on "Eight Is Enough" -- was arrested on felony hit-and-run charges over the weekend, after she allegedly dragged an L.A. County Sheriff's deputy down PCH with her car.
[quote] The deputy attempted to stop Joan after she drove past barricades and road cones during the Malibu Triathlon.
[quote] According to the Malibu Surfside News, when Raines extended his arm -- motioning for Joan to stop -- his watch became entangled in her car. She didn't stop and Michael had to run alongside the car for 20 feet until other deputies intervened.
[quote] The cop was treated at a local hospital for a sprained arm. Joan was booked on a felony hit-and-run and released on $50,000 bail.

Dick Van Patten seemed like the nicest guy. I wasn’t surprised to read he bailed out Adam. It seemed like something he’d do.

Van Patten himself was a child actor, on Broadway as "Dickie" Van Patten from age 7, so he may have well understood and empathized with Adam Rich and the stresses of starting young in a show biz career.

I just saw Susan Richardson on an old episode of "Password Plus" from the late 1970s on Buzzr. She wasn't as terrible at the game as I thought she might be, but she seemed a little unfocused. Her partner had to keep poking Susan to turn around and look at her when she was trying to give her a clue.

His autopsy results are in.
Adam Rich, who starred in the hit series, "Eight Is Enough" died from an overdose that's become far too common in America -- the culprit was fentanyl.
The L.A. County Medical Examiner's autopsy report, obtained by TMZ, says Adam's died in an accidental overdose of the powerful opioid. He also had non-toxic levels of alcohol and lorazepam... the generic for Ativan.
TMZ broke the story ... the former child TV star was found dead back in January inside his L.A. area home. At the time, foul play was not suspected. The M.E.'s report says his body was in a "state of mild decomposition."
Law enforcement later told us, his death was likely the result of an overdose ... adding the manager at Adam's apartment building found his lifeless body inside the bathroom and there was also a white powder substance, believed to be drugs.
Rich, who was 54, struggled with drugs for years and was once arrested for allegedly trying to steal pills from a pharmacy ... leading investigators to initially believe he overdosed.
Now, we have a clear understanding of what exactly led to his death.
Adam will be best remembered for his role as Nicholas Bradford, the youngest son on "Eight Is Enough." He stayed on the series for its entire duration from 1977-1981.
Throughout his career, he racked up other credits such as "Code Red" in '81 and "Dungeons & Dragons" in '83. He even made VH1's list of the greatest 100 kid stars, locking in the #73 slot.

The country went to war over 2,996 deaths on 9/11. The Sinaloa and Jalisco Cartels—the two drug cartels based in Mexico that are responsible for the vast majority of the fentanyl and methamphetamine are killing that many in weeks and we open the borders for their couriers.

[quote] Somebody who is sober doesn't overdose on Fentanyl
This is actually pretty common. When someone has been sober a long time and they go back to using, they'll use the same dosage or amount they used the last time they did drugs, at the height of their addiction. But if they've been clean months or years, that's going to be way too much since their body no longer has the tolerance they built up as addicts. Many former addicts overdose immediately upon relapsing.
