Why does eggnog disappear right from grocery stores right after New Years? Is there some reason we can’t drink this delicious beverage year round?
Eggnog

The corporate overlords require you to destroy all stock, effective 12/31 at 11:59PM. Failure to do so will subject the retailer to large fines!

A small local milk company in my area actually makes a custard milk after the holidays; they don't make a lot of it, so I assume there isn't much demand, but that is the other non-holiday option for eggnog
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 3, 2023 3:18 PM |
What is custard milk? Never heard of it.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 3, 2023 3:22 PM |
I notice this year and last year (ever since the pandemic) there has been somewhat of an eggnog shortage at grocery stores. You could still find it around Christmas, but there was very few bottles and not many choices.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 3, 2023 3:23 PM |
Does anyone know how to make homemade eggnog?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 3, 2023 3:23 PM |
Think how much fatter you would be.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 3, 2023 3:26 PM |
I make this eggnog, r5, without the alcohol (we put it in later) and I don't use the egg whites. It's pretty easy.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 3, 2023 3:29 PM |
I’ve made both recipes in the last 45 seconds. Mine is better.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 3, 2023 3:30 PM |
You made two different eggnogs in 45 seconds?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 3, 2023 3:40 PM |
They're both the same recipe, basically. The Simply Recipes one was posted 15 years ago so I suspect a lot of online recipe sites have just copied it.

This year there were a lot of "alternative" eggnogs--with almond, soy, or oat taking the place of dairy. I tried an almond version -- it was awful. (And I use almond milk regularly.) Way too thin and bland.
I would never make or drink homemade eggnog. Too much risk from raw eggs.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 3, 2023 3:49 PM |
The recipes linked are cooked, not raw. I think if you add the egg whites, those are raw, but I never do that. Basically, those recipes make a thin custard.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 3, 2023 3:54 PM |
I like brandy in my egg nog. 😋
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 3, 2023 5:03 PM |
Haven't tried this recipe but it's just dumping things in a high-speed blender so I can get behind it. Lazy whores rejoice.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 3, 2023 5:16 PM |
Here in FL, they sell both eggnog and custard drink in December.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 3, 2023 5:23 PM |
There is apparently a nationwide shortage of eggs right now, because of an avian flu epidemic or something, which is why eggs in general are more expensive at the moment and eggnog was harder to find this season (and also much more expensive).
I was having trouble finding it even before Christmas, except the ridiculous stuff made with alternative milks that no one wanted.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 3, 2023 5:47 PM |
"Pennsylvania Dutch" brand eggnog (15% alcohol) is available at liquor stores.
Equally frustrating this year is the scarcity of eggnog ice cream. What happened, Edy's?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 3, 2023 6:13 PM |
idk. whip meringues, vanilla ice cream, and liquor. one of my sisters can do it.
nutmeg.

[quote] Equally frustrating this year is the scarcity of eggnog ice cream.
Same for peppermint.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 3, 2023 6:32 PM |
I am grateful. I love it, and if it was available year-round, I would be an even fatter whore than I already am.

Friendlys used to have the best peppermint ice cream. When you can even find it, peppermint ice cream is shit these days.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 3, 2023 7:21 PM |
Eggnog is good on cereal. Sprinkle the cereal with nutmeg first.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 3, 2023 8:36 PM |
R22 - there's a fancy company whose expensive peppermint stick pints are for sale at my local upscale supermarket. You've convinced me to buy one the next time I'm there
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 3, 2023 11:29 PM |
Thank Lordy we still can get the rum.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 3, 2023 11:56 PM |
I don’t get why anyone would buy the premixed eggnog at the liquor store when you could just buy the booze of your choice and spike the fresh stuff. For those who’ve just got to fave a nog in the middle of July Borden makes a canned version.

This year my brother and I tried to gross out my niece by making a weird eggnogg concoction (a family tradition, our Dad used to do it all the time, like mustard and sugar on white bread), so we invented Egg Beer:
1 part eggnogg 2 parts Root Beer (Don’t pour them at the same time unless you want big mess!)
It didn’t work though, because it ended up being delicious. The grossest thing about the drink is the name, because it ended up tasting like a root beer float, which are awesome.

Eggnog ice-cream is a delicious treat
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 4, 2023 12:18 AM |
I have wondered about this all my life!
R26 - I do remember that canned nog, but I haven’t seen it in decades.
When I was a gayling there were crystals called, I think, PDQ that flavored milk. There was an egg nog variety that loved.
I think Carnation had envelopes of egg nog too. In fact, they may have even had egg nog flavored breakfast bars too.

I learned from a trivia quiz that eggnog used to be called "milk punch."
by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 4, 2023 12:29 AM |
I prefer cum.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 4, 2023 12:38 AM |
R31 Have you tried sprinkling nutmeg on it?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 4, 2023 12:43 AM |
Yes. I prefer Pumpkin Spice mix though. Like a PSL but way better. Makes me giddy just thinkin’ about it. ☺️
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 4, 2023 12:56 AM |
Eggnog is wretched. Like drinking Benjamin Moore paint straight from the can.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 4, 2023 1:48 AM |
If you're worried about raw eggs in eggnog you might consider the following:
- Make vanilla pastry cream(cut vanilla flavoring by one-half to three-quarters, you can adjust later) Chill.
- Dilute with milk and half & half(or light cream) to desired consistency.
- Add booze of choice.
- Nutmeg ad lib.
BITD eggnog was an Easter thing, at least in this area(Philly) I'm thinking it was because the chickens began laying eggs with a vengeance after their Winter slowdown, and the prices were cheaper. Abbott's Dairies even put out their own recipe for eggnog, which included raw eggs(who knew?) I wonder if cows also slack off on milk production during the Winter months?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 4, 2023 2:16 AM |
^^^^ Forgot to include:
- Use whole eggs in the pastry cream, if desired.
- If you didn't use the whites in the pastry cream, use them to make a cooked meringue, either Swiss or Italian, and add a dollop to each serving of eggnog before you nutmeg it. 🥚🥛

The eggnog from my Cantonese market is still available, but it has unhatched baby chicks in it, all skin and beak and big eyes.
I just use a blender and double the rum.
You need address, pok gai?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 4, 2023 2:42 AM |
There was a nog shortage this year. The lady nogs refused to mate with the male nogs.

[quote]I don’t get why anyone would buy the premixed eggnog at the liquor store when you could just buy the booze of your choice and spike the fresh stuff.
Dear short-bus passenger R26: this thread discusses the disappearance of eggnog from stores immediately following Christmas. You can't spike the fresh stuff if you can't find the fresh stuff, and that canned crap is anything but the fresh stuff.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste; do try using yours.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 4, 2023 3:51 AM |
Dial it back, asshole r40. Nothing he said was off topic, and "fresh stuff" can also mean homemade.
Being a fucking asshole for no reason is not wit. It sucks that people like you don't know that.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 4, 2023 3:56 AM |
Well, OK r40. Some of you can’t help from being complete cunts in a friendly little thread about fucking eggnog.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 4, 2023 3:57 AM |
R41 / R42 - adult former crack babies with laptops. Poor ignored creature(s).
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 4, 2023 4:14 AM |
OP, I lay in a year's worth supply for the freezer every December so I can enjoy it year round with breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 4, 2023 4:34 AM |
[quote]Borden makes a canned version.
I don't think they've made this stuff since about 1975.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 4, 2023 5:49 AM |
Amazon used to have Borden eggnog in those little square containers, but it's out of stock.
There's a powdered mix called "Gnome Nog" you can get, not sure if it's made from real gnomes or not.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 4, 2023 5:54 AM |
[quote]Make some coquito it’s much tastier.
Not sure if I just haven't had a good one, but coquitos are ridiculously sweet. Good eggnog, while also sweet, has a light cream texture from the custard.
DL favorite America's Test Kitchen has what appears to be a good eggnog recipe, but there's no way to make a small quantity.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 4, 2023 9:46 AM |
I usually dilute eggnog with milk since i love the taste but it is so fattening.

Only dogs suck down eggs ....yuck eggnog
