“A Year In The Life” (1987-1988)- anyone else remember this short-lived masterpiece?
I was too young to watch it when it was originally on but my aunt had all the episodes and the original TV movie recorded on VHS, and after I discovered it because of SJP being in it, she let me have them and watch. This was the mid 90s, after Hocus Pocus but before SATC. I liked her a lot back then (I still do to an extent).
I remember loving this show and feeling it was a show that ended far too soon.
Do you remember it? Did you like it?

The original trailer for the 1986 mini-series, before it was made a regular series the following year. Low quality, of course.

I liked it. I remember the SJP character had a poster of Bono on her bedroom wall.

I loved the mini-series. I still watch it every couple of years. This is back when there was still good TV, lo these many years ago.
Here's Part 1.
You're welcome.

Of course we didn't like it. Do you think we're complete idiots with no taste at all?

R5 yes. The mini-series was great and a success, which is why the following year it was made into a regular series.
It didn’t do as well though and was canceled.

LOVED IT. David Oliver and Morgan Stevens are both dead, such beautiful guys. Richard Kiley slammed its cancellation after he won an Emmy for it. Wendy Phillips was so good, too. She finally got a good series with Homefront. I'd loved her as far back as her stint on Executive Suite. I wish they hadn't killed off Eva Marie Saint in the miniseries.

Richard Kiley winning the GG.
He also won the Emmy for it, despite it being rare for a canceled series of 1 season to win Emmy’s.

R8 no acknowledge of Amanda Peterson? She’s dead too. As is Richard Kiley, but he was old.

Jennifer Cooke was also in the mini-series, as David Oliver’s fiancé. He ends up breaking up with her after he meets and falls for SJP’s character.

I first saw Jayne Atkinson in House of Cards. I thought her career began with this role!

Has SJP ever spoken about this series? This series has a handful of dead actors now. I would love to hear what it was like working on this show with them and what they were like. Amanda Peterson died of an OD in 2015, David Oliver died from AIDS in 1992, Morgan Stevens died in January 2022 of died of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Richard Kiley died of an unspecified bone marrow disease in 1999.
A lot of tragic and sad deaths.
Would love for her to acknowledge them.

R12 I went to college with Jayne Atkinson—she was already on her way to being a great actress—I still remember Phaedra in a production of Hippolytus—combing even at 21. Saw her decades as a replacement for Mary-Louise Parker in the original off-Broadway production of How I Learned to Drive—wonderful performance.

Wasn’t David on Another World or something?

They should add this to a streamer.

There is a 2013 thread about David started by his partner but the thread is now expired. The NYT obit said his companion was Terry Houlihan. IMDb says Terry died last October.

"A year in the life" is still my absolutely favorite TV show (great actors, great stories,,,). It took me years to get it in good quality. Unfortunately i am still looking for Episode 6 "EM7, Raiders Minus 3 and a Half for a Nickel", because I only have 25 min of it instead of 45.
