Judy Garland's love interest in Meet me in St. Louis was gay

Tom Drake was a deeply closeted gay guy and he was easily given to despair. He was never known to have had a serious romance, although he bedded both Rock Hudson and James Dean. As an adult he lived with a profound drinking problem and he lived a life of fear with having his gayness found out. John Carlyle worked regularly on television, on stage in and around Los Angeles, and toured in summer stock. In one production, he appeared with Tom Drake. He and Drake would have a one-night-stand. Drake also had an affair with Merv Griffin. Both Carlyle and Griffin had a relationship with Judy Garland, with whom Drake worked in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944).

Mama schure loved her gaysch!

by Anonymousreply 1December 30, 2022 4:52 PM

Are you implying he was a friend of Esther?

by Anonymousreply 2December 30, 2022 5:02 PM

R1- You’re funny 😆

by Anonymousreply 3December 30, 2022 5:02 PM

And Vincente Minnelli was kind to give him a decent role two decades later in The Sandpiper.

by Anonymousreply 4December 30, 2022 5:13 PM

Isn’t it a bit odd for three generations of women (Judy’s mother, Judy, Liza) to all marry gay men?

by Anonymousreply 5December 30, 2022 5:15 PM

R5 no odder than Mama and daughters all had substance abuse issue These patterns repeat in families

by Anonymousreply 6December 30, 2022 5:23 PM

Tom Drake was hot when he was young.

He also slept with Van Johnson, too (allegedly)

by Anonymousreply 7December 30, 2022 5:29 PM

Merv Griffin??? Ewww.

by Anonymousreply 8December 30, 2022 5:33 PM

All the boys fucked Van. He had the loosest hole in Hollywood, after Crawford.

by Anonymousreply 10December 30, 2022 5:43 PM

Broderick Crawford was a greasy holed sling slut?

by Anonymousreply 11December 30, 2022 6:01 PM

Broderick was a doll, baby. I paid his bail for a few of his DUIs. You know what Crawford I'm talking about.

by Anonymousreply 12December 30, 2022 6:05 PM

That's rich coming from a broad with blown out, well worn cavern like yourself.

Must be like the consistency of Jack Link's these days.

by Anonymousreply 13December 30, 2022 6:18 PM

No worn out cavern on me, baby. I do my exercises. Keeps things nice and tight down there.

by Anonymousreply 14December 30, 2022 6:24 PM

R4, I wondered if Minnelli tapped that

Or George Cukor

by Anonymousreply 15December 30, 2022 6:34 PM

More like pickled and preserved by all the hooch!

by Anonymousreply 16December 30, 2022 6:45 PM

Yes, OP, we know.

Thank you for rushing to start this badly written thread to tell us something we ALL know and which we have discussed here many, many, many, many, many, MANY times.

by Anonymousreply 17December 30, 2022 6:58 PM

R17 has stated your boundaries.

by Anonymousreply 18December 30, 2022 6:59 PM

You know he must have been gay because Judy slept with him.

by Anonymousreply 19December 30, 2022 7:01 PM

Sometimes I think to myself how wonderful it will be to one day open Datalounge and read, "R17 is Dead to Me! (Stick Up His Ass Finished Him Off)"

by Anonymousreply 20December 30, 2022 7:04 PM

The guy who played her brother was way cuter.

by Anonymousreply 21December 30, 2022 7:07 PM

They were both hot

by Anonymousreply 22December 30, 2022 7:36 PM

But the really cute guy was the boyfriend of Judy’s sister, the one who called from Yale or Princeton or whatever. You just know that dick sucking had something to do with his casting.

by Anonymousreply 23December 30, 2022 8:33 PM

"Mama schure loved her gaysch!

—Lizascha!"

You had a certain knack for picking out just the right queens to marry, Missy.

by Anonymousreply 24December 30, 2022 9:19 PM

R20 ah, it must be relaxing to be such a basic bitch.

by Anonymousreply 25December 30, 2022 9:30 PM

Aw, how cute. R25 is trying to be witty.

by Anonymousreply 26December 30, 2022 9:59 PM

I can't think of a more depressing end than living in Torrance.

by Anonymousreply 27December 30, 2022 10:15 PM

Try living in Darfur.

by Anonymousreply 28December 30, 2022 10:40 PM

Isn't he the guy who was Elizabeth Taylor's groom in Father of the Bride?

by Anonymousreply 29December 30, 2022 11:05 PM

I've always crushed on Tom Drake in "MMISL" with Judy, especially the scene when he finally catches up to and joins her and their other friends on the trolley car. (I know, this is my "MARY!" moment.) Such beautiful eyes, face and voice.

by Anonymousreply 30December 30, 2022 11:35 PM

R30, time, tide and trolley wait for no man.

OP, Judy Garland met and fell in love with and married the Gay man who directed this movie..... and thus...Liza with a "Z"

by Anonymousreply 32December 30, 2022 11:50 PM

He died broke

by Anonymousreply 33December 31, 2022 12:39 AM

R33 yes, as OP's article told us.

[quote] He was taken by pneumonia, alone & mostly forgotten in a tiny apartment in Torrence, California in 1982.

On John Carlyle -

Darkly handsome actor who was once represented by the notorious Henry Willson, the manager/agent who changed the name of Roy Fitzgerald to Rock Hudson and made the actor a huge star. Tried to promote Carlyle as the "next Montgomery Clift" but the promo fell short. A homosexual, Carlyle authored "Under the Rainbow: An Intimate Memoir of Judy Garland, Rock Hudson and My Life in Old Hollywood" [ISBN-13: 978-0786718535] that was published shortly after his death. He dishes sympathetic dirt on Garland, peccadilloes with the likes of Tom Drake and his own personal and professional shortcomings in an era of homophobia.

by Anonymousreply 35December 31, 2022 3:14 AM

The good doctor.

See, now Drake was a pretty decent actor and could have had a decent career, but IMO homophobia destroyed his opportunities.

by Anonymousreply 37December 31, 2022 3:50 AM

[quote]But the really cute guy was the boyfriend of Judy’s sister, the one who called from Yale or Princeton or whatever.

Warren Sheffield!

by Anonymousreply 38December 31, 2022 4:25 AM

I always loved his speaking voice

by Anonymousreply 39December 31, 2022 3:59 PM

He did not age well. He look like an alcoholic in THE SINGING NUN Puffy

by Anonymousreply 40December 31, 2022 8:50 PM

Tom attended a taping of "The Judy Garland Show", and Judy introduced him in the audience and said sweet things about him to the viewers.

by Anonymousreply 41December 31, 2022 8:53 PM

Per the Clarke bio, Judy was very chilly to Drake after he couldn't get it up for her.
